Soft layers will show that age doesn’t limit movement, and they will add volume. Our collection of medium layers for women over 70 will compliment any face. Revamp your hair and your self esteem all in one. Medium layered hair is the way to go for women over 70. Think wispy bangs, along with soft, shiny waves that enhance that silver. This is a high confidence style and very little upkeep.
One of the best examples that expanded my understanding of what medium layers could do was my client Diane. At 72 she had not had a real haircut in over a year because her last stylist retired. She wanted to “look like herself again.” This is what stuck with me because it wasn’t a big change like David Beckham style. This was something that had to come back into focus. I set her hair into a style that had some movement at the crown. When she looked in the mirror her hair said “There I am.” Medium layers are not about the style change. This is all about what was perfect that was covered.
What actually works has been cut a long time ago. These styles help make the silver shine.
Some like using warmer tones for brightening in a way that looks naturally elegant instead of harsh. I will continue saying that the best medium layered haircuts for women over the age of 70 do not rely on a specific guideline or pattern.
The target for this collection is to create haircuts that not only enhance and express style choices but also show an appreciation for the uniqueness of the hair. The collection has twenty-five functional haircuts and with each haircut, there is an explanation for the effectiveness of the haircut and the potential problems associated with it.

#1: A Rounded Silver Lob That Knows Exactly What It’s Doing
Some haircuts give you that feeling that everything is going to work out perfectly, and this one is no exception. This style is a mid-length bob with soft, face framing layers, and some internal layers at the crown that give it that ‘I’ve just woken up with the best hair look’ look. On fine to medium silver hair with medium density, it looks clean and polished without being too much. The shape does most of the work for you, but if you want to get it real ‘done’ at the ends you’ll need a big round or hot brush. To keep that stunning silver looking clean and fresh a glossing service will be worth it every few weeks. This is the type of haircut that looks like you put tons of work into it, but in reality you don’t.

#2 That Easy, Lived-In Shoulder Length with a Root Smudge
A soft forehead-skimming fringe and that shoulder-grazing length is the sweet spot for me. I find it super flattering for mature faces that are oval or have a gentle angular shape. The colour is beautifully blended, and the subtle root smudge adds depth without having to process it a lot. The point cutting at the ends coupled with long internal layers keeps it all very soft and flowing. A round brush gives it the polished look and isn’t high maintenance at all, but will definitely look best with a bit of heat on those ends to keep them sleek and looking beautiful.

#3 Feathered Mid-Length with an Airy Fringe That Floats
This cut is designed for hair that is more than fine. It will suit medium and coarse textures and all density levels. Long graduated layers with internal texture at the crown create volume and movement without excessive thinning. An airy fringe offers a soft touch around the eyes. Dimensional warm lowlights with a gloss to disguise regrowth is a lovely, pragmatic touch. The trade off is, it does take some styling and a round-brush blowout will do the trick, or even just a quick pass with a hot tool. The fringe will also need to be trimmed regularly to avoid it creeping into the eyes.

#4 Wispy Micro-Bangs on a Feathered Shoulder Cut
I really like the micro bangs! They’re a great choice for people who do not want to commit to a full fringe and they are great for changing up the proportions of your face especially for oval to heart shapes. The rest of the cut is also great and solid with the length being shoulder grazing and the long soft feathered layers and some interior notching with a nape stack that gives some volume for fine to medium hair. The babylights also brighten the hair up nicely. The bangs will need to be trimmed regularly and if the length gets too long overall fine hair tends to go flat, so it’s worth keeping the shape maintained.

#5 Warm Ginger Copper That Actually Flatters Mature Skin
Some people struggle pulling off this copper color, but this model most definitely does not. The model’s hair color which is closer to orange, actually suits her and does not wash her out. The hair cut is shoulder length and has some internal short layers which create some lift along with some razored edges which create some movement. The warm micro low lights at the ends create more dimension and depth than any regular highlight which would only add a dimension. Coppers can loose their brightness quickly and for this reason people need to refresh with a demi-gloss. Also if someone has fine hair, heavy layering can create an overly wispy and lacy look. However, it is very fine if that is very true.

#6 A Textured Shag That Practically Styles Itself
This is the cut I would point to for something easily manageable but not boring. The shag cut brushes the shoulders and features wispy bangs, chin-skimming layers, and adds texture and movement without needing a huge commitment. It looks like you spent no time on it and it falls beautifully on fine to medium hair densities and oval to heart shaped faces. The warm chestnut is baby lighted and root shadowed for a soft, natural dimension. If your bangs can be tricky or you have a cowlick, you may want to spend a little more time on that. Also, if you have really thick and coarse hair, you may want to leave more weight on the ends. Overall, for the right person this cut is quite low effort.

#7 A Blonde Lob with That Tucked, Put-Together Feel
I believe this cut is ideal for tucking. You know how switching the hair to one side changes the whole vibe? This lob is made for that. The longer, face-framing, radial layers with bevelled ends soften an oval shape, and the low-contrast babylights combined with a soft face-brightening halo make it bright without looking highlighted. It really does need some round brush blow drying and/or a heat tool for that little inward flip; it’s not a wash-and-go cut. Occasional glossing keeps it clear as well. It’s not a cut for very tight curls, but for straight to slightly wavy, fine to medium hair it’s really lovely.

#8 Silver Layers with a White Streak That Earns Its Place
I mean this as a compliment; the bright white streak at the part is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. She’s got a natural money piece that guides light around her face and, while it may be intentional, it’s probably just a result of her graying hair. The rest of the cut is a shouldergrazing layered lob with long internal layers, pointcut texturing, and soft crown graduation. On fine to medium hair, it’s a lovely shape. Just be advised that the high contrast white at the part is going to highlight any remaining dye lines, so if you’re transitioning from color, that area needs to be cleaned up. A lightweight root volumiser will do the trick to keep fine hair from going flat in the section just above the ears and below the crown.

#9 Auburn with a Brow-Grazing Fringe That Opens Up the Eyes
The fringe is the best part. With the soft feathering that hits the brow, it gives a good lift to the eye area, which is a thoughtful touch to a more mature face. The shoulder length auburn base is stunningly done with face-framing layers, vertical-slice texturizing, and a lovely subtle shadow root. The temple tuck also nicely softens the jaw. It’s a beautiful cut, however, the copper hues require regular glossing to remain correct, and the fringe needs to sit right. It may only take a couple of minutes each morning, but for those who are committed to it, the burn is worth it.

#10 Copper Tones with Rounded Volume and a Nape Stack
This haircut looks great from the side! Rounded volume is created from an inner stacked grad at the nape. With longer layers framing the face along with feathery curtain bangs, you get a nice shape and it’s not too much. The hint of babylights adds brightness around the face which is a nice touch. This cut is the most ideal for oval face shapes with fine to medium hair, a little wave is best. A light blow-dry might be needed to shape the hair and a gloss will be needed to keep the warm tones from looking brassy, but otherwise it’s super low maintenance!

#11 Silver Shoulder-Length with an Inward Flip That Catches Light
When silver hair has a slight inward flip, it is stunning. This haircut uses graduation at the crown and longer pieces around the face to create a certain silhouette. It gives height and a soft framing of the jawline to gently soften the look, and it’s amazing for an oval face. The silver halo that spans from crown to temple is breathtaking and better than any highlight. To keep the flip, you’ll need to round brush blow dry, so if you air dry, this is probably not the haircut for you. Likewise, hairstyles that are very coarse or tightly curled won’t work well with this haircut.

#12 A Salt-and-Pepper Blunt Lob with a Fringe That Barely Whispers
I like the subtlety in this cut. The blunt ends create the illusion of more hair, and the micro-fringe is quite literally invisible, so it doesn’t steal the spotlight and softens the brow area gorgeously. The contrast of shadow at the roots and the pearly highlights is lovely with the natural salt and pepper regrowth. The only difficulties with medium-fine straight hair are keeping the fringe polished and the crown from falling flat. With a bit of stealth internal layering or some root lift product, this is a piece of cake.

#13 Golden S-Waves with a Silver Temple Crescent
The silver crescent accent at the temple is one of those details that can’t be bought anywhere, and adds a depth and character to the whole look that is completely unique. The collarbone length cut with long face framing layers and large S-waves is ideal for an oval face and fine to medium wavy hair. There is also a sliding cut on the internal layers and a root soft balayage which helps give some added dimension. When styled with hot rollers, or a 1.5” barrel, the hair has a nice flowing, soft movement which is really lovely. It may take a while to style, and you may need to do some toning to maintain the warm tones in the blonde, but the result is a cut with a lot of character.

#14 A Chestnut Shag with a Curtain Sweep
I mean this in the best way possible. This style is super cute. I really love the endearing chestnut shag with long diagonal framing layers and soft curtain bangs. Chestnut shag with soft bangs looks best when the hair is wavy/curly. The subtle bevel at the ends of the hair provides a nice flipping effect that creates movement at the crown. The single process with a low root shadow and a clear glaze provide for the ever so slightly visible curtain bangs. This style looks best when the hair is of coarse texture. To maintain the frame of the bangs, some daily styling will be needed, particularly for coarse hair.

#15 Light Brown Layers with Curtain Bangs and a Natural Crown Cowlick
How great is it when a natural cowlick works in your favor?! This cut uses one at the crown to create some lift that you’d need product for. The shoulder-shimming layered shape with soft feathered curtain bangs is also super flattering on fine to medium straight hair. So is interior point cutting where light razor texturizing has been done to remove bulk while keeping the shape. It also blends greys beautifully. The daily maintenance commitment is a blow shape to keep the inward roll and the bangs can thin at the temples over time so just a heads up on that!

#16 Chestnut Layers with Babylights That Brighten the Eye Area
I enjoy the babylights around the face. They brighten the eyes. Face-framing highlights feel more intentional compared to a highlight all over. Your shoulder length chestnut brown hair with long front layers looks great with the natural wave. It gives it great movement. I like the root smudge blend, and it provides good length until your next appointment. Babylights need to be refreshed after some time but if you want to see that natural wave you will need some heat styling or a good diffuser.

#17 A Classic Mid-Length Chestnut with Quiet Crown Lift
This is a mid-length hairstyle that features long layers framing the face. The color is a warm chestnut and has a subtle layer of graduation at the chin. It has a soft feathered edge that creates movement and lift around the face, and blended grey regrowth will look amazing with this cut. This style requires little maintenance which is a plus! This works great with medium density straight or slightly wavy hair and gives great definition with little effort. A round brush blow out or smoothing iron create a nice polished flip, but may require some texturizing if the hair is very coarse or curly. Overall, this hairstyle is a great option for a lot of people!

#18 Chocolate Balayage Layers with Warmth That Melts
We love this cut and color! The root shadow melted and combined with slight babylights is stunning! A difficult look to achieve is the sun-kissed effect. Collar bone length layered lob with internal crown graduation is most appropriate for oval to heart shaped fine to medium, wavy, and naturally textured hair. Diagonal point cutting adds an airy feeling to the ends. Some heat styling will be needed to bring out the waves. To keep the warm balayage from looking muddy, glossing will be needed. The low contrast to the root regrowth will be a practical benefit.

#19 Feathered Layers with a Side-Swept Fringe That Feels Soft
I really like this one, although it is hard to say why. The soft, feathered finish with bangs at the shoulders has a rounded crown with internal beveling to lift without too much texturing. Long layered face framing cuts and soft subtle babylights add structure. Movement at the temples beautifully softens the look on the oval face with fine to medium wavy hair. For this, some root lifting and some lightening refresh is needed but that is not a big deal.

#20 Silver Mid-Length Layers with a Clean Rounded Perimeter
I appreciate the simplicity of the silver cut. It has a collar bone length internal graduation at the crown with long rounded perimeter layers. It really has a way of softening your features and elevating the silver without any color work which let’s be honest, that’s exactly what you want. It’s clean and flattering on medium dense slightly wavy to straight hair. The honest downside is layering reduces blunt weight so if you have very fine or low density hair the ends may look thinner and the root pattern at the crown becomes more obvious so that’s just something to keep in mind before committing.

#21 A Bronde Shag That Hides Silver Gracefully
This haircut addresses one of my clients’ biggest concerns; how to integrate new silver without having to commit to heavy color works. The subtle root smudge at the part hides the growing grey hairs. The shoulder grazing waves provide more shape and texture. The height comes from the short crown layers. The ends are razor cut. The wispy fringe especially on softer rounder faces breaks the forehead line. It’s an air dry cut, which I always like! The fringe will need some styling every now and then, and if the ends are not touched up the textured ends can look a bit shaggy. The overall look is relaxed and undone, which I love.

#22 Warm Chestnut Layers with Wispy Micro-Bangs and a Natural Cowlick
Another cowlick is actually working with her, really her natural growth pattern at the crown gives this cut lift that stays put no product. The mid-length chestnut layer with soft interior graduation and wispy micro-bangs ovals face on fine-to-medium, slightly wavy hair. A gloss glaze warms the tone in a way that looks healthy rather than colored. The round-brush shaping is gentle and quick. Bangs are in need of regular trims and if your hair is very fine, a light root-lift spray is advisable to keep everything from going flat between washes.

#23 Silver Layers with Flipped Ends That Don’t Try Too Hard
I like the silver cut. I think it looks nice even when it isn’t styled perfectly and I feel like that is super important. She used mid-length layers along with some interior graduation and point texturizing to create some root lift and soft flipped ends. It is also super pretty and easy on fine to medium straight hair and an oval face shape. It does air dry nicely and you can blow dry it with a round brush if you want a more polished look. I have a cowlick at my crown and a little product keeps it at bay, which is nice.

#24 Soft Feathered Layers Shaped Around Glasses
I can tell where layers fall in relation to the frame of the glasses because that intersection can be the deciding factor of a good or bad cut. This one does it well. The temple-tuck layers are crafted to sit above the arms of glasses, which is the type of consideration that genuinely benefits someone in their day-to-day life. The mid-length, fine to medium, medium density hair has a layered cut with the crown being short graduated layers and internal point cutting for a lift effect. It also blends gray hair beautifully, and it is also round brush able. Very thick hair may bulking, so it’s really for finer textures. It will truly shine on the finer side of things.

#25 A Sunlit Blonde Shag with Root-Smudge That Hides Regrowth
Just as clever as the cut is the color strategy. A root smudge combined with low-contrast babylights means that there is extended wear time between appointments without that obvious grow-out line (and for a client in her 70s, that kind of practical thinking goes a long way). The shoulder length shag with long curtain layers and razor texturing at the ends gives an airy crown lift and soft framing on fine to medium wavy hair of medium density. It does require a warm blow-dry or soft iron shaping to look its best, and an occasional toner prevents the blonde from getting too brassy. But considering how good it looks, the overall maintenance balance is reasonable.
