Jaw-length curls are probably one of the more underrated styles. I get it, different styles take different levels of thought. I appreciate the concern. I feel the wrong type of curls could look off. Heavy curls can form a “helmet” look, and too many layers can end up looking like a poodle cut, (definitely wouldn’t recommend). Trust me, I’ve been there. I did what was a good look for a poodle cut, at 2am, and the grow-out was a journey. When the length is spot on, this is one of my favorite things to do in the chair. When curls stop at or just below the jaw, they provide a unique type of movement and volume that long curls weigh down and short curls just don’t have.
Most people think jaw-length curls is an easy haircut to do. The truth is, it’s one of the most technically difficult cuts to do. Because of the fact that you have to account for shrinkage. Curls shrink a ton and it differs person to person. Not only that, you have to think about where to put the weight so that the curls fall the way you want them. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve had people get this haircut and horrified watch me cut it what looks like two inches longer, only to have it spring up to where we discussed and stare at me like I did some kind of magic trick. I know it looks like magic, but it’s just paying attention.
#1: Soft Layers That Let the Curl Do Its Thing
I love how the layers look here. Every curl has the ability to bounce independently, allowing for a fluffier look that doesn’t create the big-hair effect. My favorite layers are the ones that fall around the cheekbones. This style is perfect for the wash-and-go type. A little deep conditioner scrunched in will give you that model-off-duty look that seems like you put in a ton of effort.

I have to admit that I am intrigued by that color. The subtle plum undertones are easy to miss, but they are providing a lot of dimension to the look. The bouncy curls are nicely defined and sit right at the jaw which gives your entire face a nice uplifting effect. If your hair naturally has that curl pattern, I would say you are already halfway there! Just make sure to stick to your moisture routine because dry hair and defined curls do not mix.

It feels perfect. From here, the definition of the curls looks smooth and not crunchy. I remember all the bad gel experiences we had in the 2000s walking the lines. The texture looks healthy and super vibrant. That is always the goal along with looking styled. If you want to look interesting but put together, this is the cut for you. Just keep your curls moisturized and they’ll style themselves!

This cut has lots of layers, and giving you that dimension is the most important thing about this cut. The curls are also not uniform, with some tighter than others. This gives it more of a natural look rather than an artificial or set look. Something I would mention is that curly hair always looks shorter than you expect once it dries. So if you are aiming for this length, make sure to tell your stylist to cut it a little longer when the hair is wet.

This haircut has an inviting softness. It’s the type of cut that gives you great hair and a perfect day kind of vibe. The curls are fantastic. Particularly, they offer a little looseness. The curls remain defined, and they won’t look overdone like you just stepped out of a salon. If you live in a humid area, you may want to consider a holding curl enhancer, but other than that, you shouldn’t need to do much withthis look.

I have learned the hard way more than once, and I would much rather err on the side of too subtle than too obvious with layers on curly hair because you can always take more but you can’t put it back.

With the medium density, you get a lot of volume without the struggle, and the curl definition looks naturally done instead of a product heavy look. This is the kind of cut where people want to change things but are nervous about going too short. It still feels long and there is a lot to work with!
#13 Polished Bounce That Doesn’t Try Too Hard
The layers on this style are good and shaped well so the curls can expand outward and have that bouncy look to them. Instead of falling flat or looking triangular, which is the eternal enemy of curly bobs. It is polished enough for anything and casual enough that it doesn’t feel stiff. If you’re in a humid climate, maybe keep an anti-frizz spray in your bag, but honestly, I feel like the cut is doing most of the work here.

With good curl cream, the look should stay and not drag down the curls which is a common concern for those with fine hair.

It is true that maintaining a color this nice does require a certain level of commitment, so it may be a good idea to invest in color-safe shampoo, and you might end up needing to do touch-ups every five to eight weeks. But for a color this fabulous, I think it is worth the commitment!

I find it amusing how customers bring me photos of haircuts saying they want to style it so it looks effortless. In fact, most of the work comes from the haircut. The whole trick is secret is that a good haircut makes it even easier to style. Seriously, you just need a dab of styling cream to damp hair and you’re ready to rock!

That’s good self-care in an excuse!

The cut looks great with the back layers added some lightness, and the copper tones shine well. The shaggy appearance adds to the softness of this cut so that it doesn’t feel too polished. The definition of the curls is phenomenal on what looks like thin to medium hair, and overall the shape of the cut is flattering and not basic. The bright copper color will need maintenance to prevent it from fading into a brassy color, but when it is freshly done there is nothing like it.
#23 Soft, Sophisticated, and Easy to Love
This is a style that I see and think, yes, that is perfect. The soft layers frame the face and keep the focus from the rich color, which also enhances but doesn’t compete. The look is sophisticated but not too stuffy, and whether you are dressing it up or running errands it feels just the right amount intentional. For fine hair, this is a particularly good option as the curl pattern, combined with the layers, creates a natural fullness. Overall, really lovely.
