I cut an Italian bob on a client for the first time last week. She got some sort of a Roman street style blog reference and some blurry post. But she wanted to feel good about herself and ‘cleaned up’. She had a sketchy confidence and wasn’t really leaving a lot of room for suggestions.nnThe Italian bob is more about an attitude than a style. It’s the most versatile bob that I can think of. It works on a lot of people, but in different ways. There are people with finer hair and sharper features where it works really sleek and snow white style. Then, there’s people with round faces and coarser hair where it can look a bit too casual, almost like a motorbike rider who has just jumped off in the middle of Milan. The best length is between chin and collarbone and that allows for the hair to actually move with a lot of flow, which has been a bit of a struggle for all my clients who have had too many boring styles that just sit on their shoulders.
It’s pretty interesting to assume cuts on people who are 20 years old or 60 years old. It really resonates with that other trait of simply making it look like they have a life with a fascinating schedule.

#1: Layered Bob with Natural Texture and Warm Auburn
This haircut makes fine hair look like it has some secrets! The layers are paying off and making the hair appear denser and showing natural texture. The auburn color adds warmth and makes the hair look rich instead of sparse. I wouldn’t over think styling this one! Just a texturizing spray and scrunched hair while it’s damp and you’re good to go.

#2 Copper Bob with Soft Movement
I love how the copper color is so stunning and how it catches the light in a way most brunette colors would envy. The layers are soft and movable which is great, because we don’t want the ends to get too thin. That’s a common issue with fine to medium hair. The subtle bangs are an amazing touch that brings everything together and is so current without screaming, ‘I JUST GOT BANGS’. I will say this cut lives and dies by how you dry it. Depending on your hair type, it can go flat if you air dry it. This look needs to have hair kept in place with a round brush and blow dryer to keep it dry.

#3 Clean Lob with Polished Edges
Sometimes the best thing to do is just let straight hair be straight hair, and this is the cut that gets it. The length is also smart, just above the shoulders, to keep it from dragging down or looking like it is just growing out from something. There’s a little bit of softness to the internal layering, and it adds depth without disturbing the surface, which is the little detail that marks a cut as good rather than forgettable. And, especially if your hair is naturally this slick, consider yourself lucky and leave it. Otherwise, a flat iron on low will give you the look without making it seem like you tried too hard.

#4 Tousled Bob with a Soft Fringe
I’d suggest this trim to someone who wants to look good without really trying, and I mean it. The bangs are casual enough that you can leave it a few weeks for a trim and it won’t look terrible, and the wavy texture looks good and provides volume, something finer hair usually struggles with. The upkeep isn’t too bad. Where it can lack is really fine, really straight hair that doesn’t have enough natural movement to sustain this form. If that’s you, you’d have to commit to a bit of sea salt spray and some scrunching, which honestly isn’t the worst.

#5 Chin-Length Italian Bob with Gentle Wave
This is for the Italians bob. The traditional bob style, chin length, with enough wave that it doesn’t look ridged. With fine hair as such, the cut feels weightless like it could float in the breeze. The layer is super subtle, and would be so easily missed, but it’s what’s giving the ends that soft, piecey quality as opposed to a blunt wall of hair. I love this length on people who have been hiding behind longer hair for ages and are finally ready to let their face do more of the talking. A trim every 6 weeks or so will keep this intentional and looking fresh and not grown out.

#6 Blunt Textured Bob with a Modern Fringe
I find it interesting how the blunt edge contrasts with the softening fringe. It’s the tension between the two that makes it interesting. On straight, medium-density hair, this cut almost styles itself. The rounded layering through the interior keeps it from going all helmet head, which is always the risk with a blunt bob on hair that behaves too well. I’d wear this exactly as shown and would not want to fiddle with it too much.

#7 Soft-Wave Bob That Flatters the Jawline
The length of the cut brings focus to the jaw and the neck area because longer cuts tend to obscure length in the bone structure. The waves look natural and that is always the goal. With medium to fine hair, this cut has enough texture so that it doesn’t go limp by the end of the work day. A little morning curl effort should do the trick, but I’d say even sleeping on it would still give you an acceptable look.

#8 Highlighted Textured Bob with Easy Movement
I really like that the highlights are structural and not just decoration. They are placed to exaggerate the layers and help the movement show from across the room. On fine hair, that optical illusion is better than any volumizing product. The length is youthful without dipping into the trying too hard territory. The slight natural wave makes it look lived-in in a really nice way.

#9 Curly Bob with Wispy Bangs
Soft curls really do deserve a hairstyle that matches their beauty and this bob haircut is perfect for it. The bangs are the kind that look good all the time, which is rare to find with bangs. The curls give a nice volume on the fine hair and the length that is above the shoulders ensures it stays really bouncy which is great. Great curl defining cream will keep the curls in shape without making it crunchy, but this will be a wash-and-go situation for anyone who has naturally textured hair.

#10 Jaw-Length Brown Bob with Lived-In Bangs
I mean this as a compliment, but this style has its own unique character. It kind of looks like it’s being worn by someone cool. The waves look pretty informal and the bangs look the right amount grown out so they look better than freshly cut ones. Informal and jaw length, it’s actually framing the face in a flattering way without being too affectionate about it. If your hair has any natural wave at all, this look will reward you for leaving it alone.

#11 Volumized Bob with Crown Lift
The lift at the crown gives the illusion of fullness where fine hair tends to fall flat. This is a cut that captures well as the proportions are right, a touch more volume on top tapering into textured ends. The rich brown shade adds weight visually, which gives fine hair more substance. I’d suggest a root volumizing powder to keep that lift between washes because, unfortunately, gravity is a force to be reckoned with and your hair will remind you of that by day two.

#12 Asymmetrical Italian Bob with a Polished Finish
Noticing design asymmetry is usually intentional and here it definitely works. The extended front creates a more pronounced forward look and a possible optical illusion that elongates the face. The modern and clean appearance is enhanced by straight layers that avoid “curtains” while softening the look. It depicts a lot of precision and the upkeep has to be equivalent. If you tend to let your cuts go for months this is probably not the style for you.

#13 Chocolate Bob with Face-Framing Bangs
Your hair color is pretty and your bangs look nice. Bangs are super good and nice and add a lot of dimension to people’s faces. This style looks good on clean to medium-textured hair and gives the impression that the person is very put together, a lot of work doesn’t go into the hairstyle. Also, with this style, you won’t have to put in a ton of work to maintain the look. If you want your bangs to look the way they do now, they will have to be touched up in 3 to 4 weeks.

#14 Lifted Textured Bob with Casual Layers
This style will always look good. It takes a few minutes to do it, but it will look like you spent a lot of time on it. The layers give fine hair looks fuller and gives it more volume. Hair that is shoulder-length is good for square and oval faces. It doesn’t look corporate with a soft wave to it. For more movement, put some mousse in your hair and blow dry It will not feel crunchy.

#15 Tousled Bob with Airy Bangs
The bangs are going to look lighter and not weighed down, making them look even more fine. The messy hair trick is the fullness, which is the trick to medium fine density hair. The forgiving factor of looking good and a little grown out and a little messy is all of this, and this. You can go eight weeks with out an appointment and everything will be fine, let everything else breathe, just bangs will need it.

#16 Dimensional Bob with Soft Highlight Placement
The highlights look good because they were done with purpose instead of being thrown in randomly. The placement is pretty and is concentrated where the sun would naturally hit which adds real dimension instead of just painted dimension. The waves are loose and uncomplicated, the kind that come from twisting sections around a wand once and walking away. For finer hair, the light layering gives you volume without that thinned out look that over-layered cuts can create. If you want color that looks good and doesn’t require touch ups every 6 weeks to maintain, this is a great option.

#17 Sharp Blunt Bob with Statement Bangs
This cut has quite a lot of attitude and will not apologize. The sharp, blunt lines that sit right at the jaw, and the full bangs don’t hedge. On fine to medium hair, the blunt ends create an illusion of thickness, which is one of the top secrets in cutting. This is a look that will leave the salon looking impeccable, but really will be about how much you want to keep it up in the end. Trims every five to six weeks, no question. If that sounds like a lot, then you might want to go softer, but if you’re game, this cut is absolutely beautiful.

#18 Ombre Bob with Textured Ends
The ombre transition looks really good here. The roots are dark enough to look natural, and the ends are light enough to add brightness without looking like a leftover from 2014. The waves help the color, allowing the light pieces to catch and reflect light from different angles. The medium length makes it all move really well, which is half the appeal. The color variation is beautifully showcased with medium density because it is just right to capture the texture without being too thick. The ombre may need purple shampoo if it starts pulling warm, but if it doesn’t, the grow-out on this is quite graceful.

#19 Clean Blunt Bob with Quiet Highlights
The blunt cut creates structure for the style, and the highlights add dimension, so the look doesn’t feel flat in photos or under the lights. On fine medium-density hair, this cut looks effortlessly chic. And that’s a statement I don’t make lightly. Most things that look effortless take a lot of effort. The ends make sure it doesn’t appear too severe, and add warmth that a perfectly straight, blunt bob doesn’t have. As long as the ends are kept trimmed, this cut will serve you well for a long time.

#20 Shoulder-Length Textured Bob with Natural Shine
The cut lets the shine of the hair story really shine through. The subtle layers break the smooth plane so hair can move. This looks healthy and purposeful with fine hair and that’s what most of my clients want even if they don’t say so. With coarser hair, more internal weight removal would be necessary to hold this shape. This is definitely a maintenance step to think about prior to going ahead with this.

#21 Chocolate Bob with Dimensional Highlights
I like the warm chocolatey color with the highlights. It looks very nice and the color looks very natural, making it look like your hair does some fun things in the light. Not to mention, it’s has a super easy style. This length of hair is also very flattering for oval and heart shaped faces. It just works. A few easy waves with a diffuser will do the trick, unless your hair is super straight and then you might have to bring a tool for this. It will still look super effortless and will not be overdone.

#22 Effortless Bob with Soft, Grown-In Bangs
The bangs look good right now because they’re at a good length to be swept off of the face, and short enough to frame the face. This is my favorite length for bangs. The soft layering gives a lightness to the haircut which is really nice for fine and medium hair. It’s a low maintenance style. With a round brush and dry shampoo on day two, you’re good to go. I really appreciate a haircut like this one because you can look good for school pick up without doing a lot of work. I know this is a lot of words for a compliment, but it’s the truth.

#23 Collarbone-Length Blunt Bob with Wispy Fringe
Here collarbone length means it’s lobs range which is versatile in terms of styling. You can wear it down, do half up styles, and tuck it behind your ears and it will work for all those situations. Wispy fringe takes away the edge and balances the blunt perimeter with some softness. Surprisingly blunt ends give the illusion of more density which is why fine hair works for this cut. Doing a gloss treatment will help the look a lot by adding shine and sealing the cuticle, but if you don’t want to put in the effort to maintain it, it’s fine to skip it.

#24 Curly Bob with Layers That Actually Work with Your Texture
People who cut curly hair in layers often do the layers on straight hair, and then seem confused when the curls spring up oddly. This one is obviously done with the curl pattern in mind because the face-framing layers sit where they should when the hair is where it naturally falls. The shoulder-length and above allows the curls to bounce without any weight pulling them down, and on finer hair, it looks light and full instead of heavy. If you’re thinking about some color, a balayage would work beautifully here because the curls would break up the color placement in a way that foils don’t.

#25 Wavy Bob with Full Bangs and Volume
The bangs and texture are talking and it’s a good thing. The soft waves give fine to medium hair a fullness it wouldn’t have if styled straight, and the bangs anchor the look with something intentional. With slightly thicker hair like the one shown, the cut maintains structure throughout the day, which not every bob can deliver. Between washes, expect to use a round brush or wand to maintain the waves, but the pay off is a style that looks intentional, yet not rigid.
