25 Stunning Highlights to Cover Gray Hair on Brunettes Beautifully

My client had been coloring her hair solid for 15 years before the appointment. She was dying to not have another grow-out cycle and deal with the obvious color line every three weeks. We developed new techniques for placement and put in some highlights. When she saw the result, she literally lost her voice and said “That’s what I actually look like, just better.” That was a huge shift in her relationship with color and the grow out, because it was not about color and covering. It was about the freedom to leave the grey and let her highlights make the grey contextualized in a way that worked.

With highlights, brunette hair can provide a structure for the grey. It is battling the natural silver threads in the hair to not create a tonal layer that feels like a flat surface. I selected 25 examples that I believe show the most of what can be done to create that uplifting sense of space in the hair. Some of the styles are warm and some are cool; some are barely-there and some are much more obvious, but the best styles have one thing in common: the hair looks good on the person. All of them also provide great inspiration for someone contemplating their first highlight, or for those with a certain technique in mind who are looking for a new approach.

Layered Brunette Transformation with Soft Highlights

#1: Layered Brunette with Highlights That Actually Move

This haircut has nice highlights but she doesn’t need them because the layers are doing most of the work. The length is in the sweet spot where you have enough for body and swing but not so long that the weight pulls everything down flat. The best part about this haircut is the way the highlights frame her face. They look so naturally. If you have thin hair, this type of layering will create so much more volume compared to blunt cut and the colour is an option that adds dimension with out the commitment of a full service.

Chic Layered Bob with Subtle Highlights

#2 A Bob That Feels Light Without Losing Substance

A layered bob can look really bad if it isn’t cut with the right amount of precision, but this example has been done well. The highlights give just the right amount of warmth so the gray blends in with the brown instead of standing out. This look is effortless and achieving it is harder than it seems. This would really suit someone with a finer texture as it would give the appearance of more life in the hair without having to use volumizing mouse every day.

Softly Layered Chestnut Hair with Subtle Highlights

#3 Chestnut Layers That Keep Things Soft

When it comes to brunette shades, I always thought that chestnut is one of the easier shades to highlight because it has built in warmth which makes the dimension look more natural to begin with. This cut ends just below the shoulders and the layers aren’t overdone. They’re just enough to keep the ends from looking too heavy. The highlights around the face soften the look without being too obvious and it’s a nice dependable look. It’s nothing flashy but it’s the type of hair that always looks polished.

Choppy Pixie Cut with Soft Silver Highlights

#4 Choppy Pixie with Silver Woven Through

I’ve never seen this look made so much sense for the gray question. Instead of camouflaging or covering over, the silver highlights lean into what is already there, and the choppy texture gives it some intention. For some people a pixie cut is a gamble, but when it’s a hit, there’s really no competition. The texture here does the heavy lifting, giving fine hair some much needed lift and movement, and making the whole thing feel so alive. You won’t have to do much styling, but to maintain that shape, you’ll be coming in for trims every four to five weeks.

Modern Textured Bob with Soft Gray Highlights

#5 Textured Bob with Gray Highlights That Read as Modern

The cut falls right on the jawline, an area I recommend more and more because it works on so many people. The gray highlights are placed to add depth to the brunette base, not to contrast, and that distinction matters. This cut will give the illusion of density on finer hair that you don’t have to style in every day. It’s the kind of bob that you can wash, add a little texturizing cream to the ends and walk out the door looking intentional.

Textured Bob with Warm Balayage Highlights

#6 Warm Balayage on a Textured Bob

With balayage being popular for a while now, it’s easy to spot the bad versions of it. Because of this, the good versions are even more noticeable. This particular one is good because the warmth is concentrated towards the ends and the face, giving the look a natural gradient that works with the greys instead of against them. The length above the shoulders gives it some bounce, and the soft wave prevents it from looking too structured. I appreciate that it is low fuss after leaving the salon.

Textured Brunette Bob with Warm Highlights

#7 Warm-Toned Bob with Texture That Does the Talking

These cut layers are framed without closing off a line, which is a delicate balance. The warm highlights are blended in so they create an impression of rich, healthy color and are subtle enough to not draw focus to the highlights. I would direct someone here if they want to manage their gray but are not ready for super drastic changes. It’s a soft option. The texture adds character and the color adds warmth, which together tackle the gray without being the center of attention.

Textured Pixie Cut with Subtle Copper Highlights

#8 Pixie with Copper That Warms Everything Up

The warm color of copper looks wonderful with the right placement, as exemplified here. The random scattering of highlights, darker base and, warm base all contrast and alter the energy of the cut. The short length draws focus to the face, which is a personal preference. For me, this is most flattering on those with dark hair and silver coming through, as the copper highlights create a nice bridging.

Textured Brunette Bob with Brightened Ends

#9: Tousled Brunette Bob with Brightness at the Ends

This style gives off an everyday summer vibe. It is shoulder length with enough texture so that it stays interesting and the lightened ends create a downward focus which is flattering on most. I like the movement of the ends. For finer to medium hair, the lightened ends create low contrast, which feels undone, and for a finish, I’d suggest a light styling cream scrunched through damp hair.

Softly Textured Brunette Lob with Face-Framing Layers

#10 Lob with Face-Framing Layers That Earn Their Keep

Let’s look at some ideal face framing layers! This hairstyle leaves length, but adds softness around the jaw and cheekbones. The highlights brighten the layers beautifully. The other pieces are kept simple which will help the front layers do their job easily. With minimal upkeep to the style, this is a great option for those wanting a sophisticated look.

Effortlessly Layered Brunette with Soft Subtle Highlights

#11 Layered Brunette with Highlights That Catch Light Naturally

This style features highlights that are more subtle, and instead of making you look like you’ve just come from the salon, they brighten your face and add some dimension and movement to your hair layers. The shoulder length gives it that youthful bounce without being too much to manage. If you go this route, invest in a good hydrating mask because even subtle lightening can shift the texture over time.

Textured Short Cut with Natural Volume

#12 Short Textured Cut with Its Own Built-In Volume

Some haircuts compliment how a person’s hair falls naturally, and this is one of those cuts. It works with the hair’s natural wave and the layers are designed to aid the waves instead of opposing them. The volume you see, and the volume you will see everyday, comes directly from the haircut itself as opposed to a product, meaning that the hair will naturally like this and will do little effort to show it. The shape and texture is what matters here. Not to say the color is bad, but I wouldn’t say the color is really doing anything dramatic.

Softly Curled Brunette Lob with Face-Framing Layers

#13 Curled Lob with Layers That Create Fullness

Softness to this lob is achieved thanks to some loose curls that harmonize with those face-framing layers. Highlights are subtle and blend with the grays so there isn’t a harsh contrast. For someone with medium to fine density, this style gives the illusion of more hair which is a great trick. Maintenance on curls can be a con, and if you’re a wash-and-go type of person, this isn’t a style for you. But if you put in the effort, this style will help you look more polished!

Elegant Long Layers with Subtle Gray Highlights

#14 Long Layers with Gray Highlights That Feel Deliberate

I appreciate long hair that shows off gray hair. The highlights are cool toned and subtle. The highlights are elegant and placed well throughout thick hair. It looks effortless and sophisticated. The hair has enough volume and movement so it doesn’t just hang there. I can appreciate that long layering takes commitment. You have to be willing to get regular trims and conditioning to keep the ends from looking thin and dried out. If you are willing to put in that work, the end result will be worth it.

Textured Brunette Lob with Warm Caramel Highlights

#15 Warm Caramel Lob with Easy Texture

Brunette hair with caramel highights is a timeless classic. The warmth of the highlights adds depth without lifting the color too far from the natural base. The shoulder length also allows for some cool movement during the day. Some color appointments make you feel like a completely different person, but this one has you feeling like a better version of yourself, which is what a lot of people want!

Elegant Layered Brunette with Subtle Copper Highlights

#16 Copper Highlights on a Layered Cut That Knows What It’s Doing

This copper color looks warmer than red. This also helps with the decision making for placement. The layers finish at the shoulders in a subtle wave just enough to generate some movement. The overall look is polished without being stiff. Keep in mind though, copper tones do fade faster than other highlighting colors, but while it is fresh, this combination is a great richness which is great.

Textured Short Cut with Soft Copper Highlights

#17 Short Textured Cut with Copper That Feels Effortless

I appreciate how this easy-going relaxed haircut kept all the elements together. I think the copper highlights are soft while still adding enough variety to the base so the brunette doesn’t read flat. The styling has some lift at the crown without looking like it took twenty minutes to get there, so that tells me the cut is doing most of the work at the crown. For fine hair this length and texture combination is one of the more flattering options, and I think that’s great.

Beautifully Layered Brunette with Soft Caramel Highlights

#18 Layered Brunette with Caramel That Catches the Light

This medium-length style has caramel highlights cut in that depending on the light, the highlights may appear brighter in the sun and more blended indoors. That shifting dimension is what makes a highlight job look natural instead of painted. The layers cut movement and the length just below the shoulders gives it a youthful look without much fuss. It’s a well executed version of something a lot of people ask for and there’s value in that.

Textured Shoulder-Length Brunette with Soft Highlights

#19 Shoulder-Length Waves with a Sun-Kissed Quality

The highlights show off that look that everyone wants to get when they come to my chair. This reference photo shows what you’re describing spot on. The waves also add some texture to keep it interesting but without going overboard. The color also gives a nice warmth to the face, in a seasonal and fresh way. It’s versatile and unapologetic and works just as well for running errands as it does for dinner.

Modern Textured Bob with Soft Golden Highlights

#20 Golden Highlighted Bob with Real Dimension

Distraction can happen when considering golden highlights if the chunks are too large or too consistent. With this case, however, the calculated placement of the highlights lends an organic touch. The highlights serve to provide the bob additional life and structure. The highlights combined with the structure of the bob provide a contemporary and effortless appearance. In the scenario of going gray and desiring a natural look, this coloring technique allows the transition phase to look fantastic.

Chic Textured Short Cut with Soft Highlights

#21 Textured Short Cut with Highlights That Know When to Stop

Thank you for showing me your highlights. I really like the control and placement you have. You have a good sense of balance to enhance the face without going overboard. The length of your hair rests just above the shoulders. It is textured enough to maintain a variety on a day to day basis. I like the playfulness in the layers. It prevents the cut from being too serious, which is ideal for the length and the style. The contrast in colour is soft enough for the grow-out to not be punishing.

Stylish Shoulder-Length Brunette with Soft Caramel Highlights

#22 Shoulder-Length Brunette with Caramel That Warms Without Overwhelming

I like the way the hair caramel adds warmth and dimension without overwhelming the brunette base. The hair style is do is pretty loose waves and the layers give the style more volume around the face, which is really the nice subtle unfussy compliment. This look is very everyday, the type where you feel like yourself just with good lighting. If you like the versatility of wearing the hair straight and then wavy, this cut does the job on both counts with no problem.

Chic Textured Short Cut with Soft Honeyed Highlights

#23 Honeyed Highlights on a Short Cut That Flatters

Honeyed tones may be one of those highlight options that suit a wider variety of skin tones than most people think, and (on this short cut) provide a warmth that keeps the overall appearance from feeling too cool/harsh. The volume at the crown is doing something nice here, giving lift where finer hair tends to fall, and the face framimg is subtle but effective. For someone who wants to let their gray blend in gradually without having to cover it at all, I think this is a smart choice, the honey provides enough softness that the silver just becomes part of the mix.

Textured Short Crop with Subtle Warm Highlights

#24 Short Crop with Warm Highlights That Feel Intentional

I am praising this cut for its simplicity. The warm highlights paired with the texture create a bit more of a personality. The shape of the haircut does most of the work, while the color just adds support. This is a great option for short hair lovers who keep it simple. At this length, you will need regular trims to maintain the shape of the cut, but you won’t need to spend much time styling the cut.

Textured Shoulder-Length Brunette with Soft Gray Highlights

#25 Shoulder-Length Brunette with Cool Gray Highlights

The warm brunette base color with cool grey highlight(s) looks great in this modern style. The wave pattern adds volume to the hair and the middle density helps support the length so the ends don’t look thin. I also appreciate this color technique because it does not hide the gray hair. Instead, it compliments the choice to have gray hair rather than trying to make it look like gray hair is just something that happened. The movement and softness from the layers create the impression that the person is confident in their appearance and that’s always a great look.
