As I was looking at one of my client’s Pinterest boards, I noticed a ton of different cut examples saved — long layers, pixies, shags, etc. And I asked her what her plan was. She said, “I just want my hair to look like it’s… there.” I thought that was a really honest statement to make in the chair. I know what you mean. When your hair is extremely thin, you want to avoid the trendy cuts. Instead, you want to find something that works WITH what you actually have.
I have enough experience to know what kind of difference the right cut will make. It’s the difference between sad looking thin hair and thin hair that looks intentional. It’s not about the product, or the blowout, it’s about the cut. A good haircut on fine hair does 80% of the work, and the other 20% is just not adding anything that weighs the hair down. I love to talk about a lot of these and some I can only talk about a little bit, but you’ll see which ones I mean.
#1: Long Layers That Actually Work on Fine Hair
I know this style looks simple, but there’s actually a lot of work going into this. The length sits just above the shoulders which is great for fine hair because you get movement and the weight of the hair isn’t dragging everything down. There’s some layering, but it is pretty subtle. With fine hair, if you over-layer it, it can really start looking stringy, and that’s the opposite effect we are going for. You could slide a flat iron through this for a really sleek look, but letting it air-dry will keep that nice shape. I also recommend just light product use as a lightweight volumizing spray will do.
#2: Soft Beachy Layers That Give Fine Hair Some Life
I appreciate their work considering the waves are doing the right thing for fine hair by making it look more voluminous. With the layers that start around the shoulders, they are softer and not too harsh so you keep that end density that is always my concern when layering fine hair too much. I love the whole look’s effortless airy quality. Naturally those waves aren’t going to create themselves, so most people will need a curling wand and some texturizing spray to achieve diversion, but once you figure it out, it’s not a huge production.
#3: A Short Layered Bob with Bangs That Have Some Attitude
I find this very interesting as the bangs do a lot of work here. They draw attention to the face and away from any thinness in the hair. The layers give that impression of volume and depth. If you’re oval or heart-shaped, this will be super flattering. The humidity will ruin the cut and its shape, so a light-hold styling cream will be a good idea to keep in your bag. Even though it is very high maintenance, it still looks polished without looking like too much effort.
#4: Platinum Tousle with a Sneaky Little Undercut
This hairstyle is so exciting! It is really breaking new ground when it comes to working with fine hair. The tousled top will help create nice volume and the platinum color reflects light to help thicken the hair, creating the illusion of thicker hair. And, the subtle nape undercut is such a smart idea (most people won’t even see it!) It will let the top sit higher, creating so e shape, and remove bulk from underneath so the hair on top is able to sit higher, creating more shape! Intelligent! Fine hair for platinum does come with a few downsides. It is a commitment. Expect root touch ups regularly, and of course, touched up roots will be a part of life with this shade. You’ll need purple shampoo to combat any brassiness, but this is stunning!
#5: A Jet-Black Bob with Curled Ends
I mean classic in the good sense! This style of hair has been in fashion for years, throughout the years for good reason. The shoulder length bob and ends curled under makes it ideal to fine hair. They rarely have volume but this style gives them that extra volume. The rich black color of the hair offers incredible density just by being darker. The reason this is true is because darker colors have less light passing through them. This means the hair photographs and appears thicker compared to lighter shades. This style offers a contrast to lighter skin tones as well. The style will require a low-maintenance round brush blow dry. The color does require maintenance as grown-out roots are visible. The cut will need maintenance to keep the lines defined. The hair is very versatile and can be worn to brunch, the office, and dinner.
#6: Copper Bob with Feathered Edges
Recently, I’ve been suggesting copper tones more often, and I love to recommend this shade because it provides warmth and dimension to fine hair (which is exactly what you need!). Here, the feathered edges soften everything and add a playful element that keeps it from being too severe. This color is also surprisingly low maintenance! You won’t be in the salon as often as you would with a blonde shade, but you will want to use a color-safe shampoo for copper tones since the vibrancy will fade. The cut is very forgiving, it will grow out nicely and won’t need to be constantly reshaped.
#7: Wavy Bob with Wispy Bangs
These lovely layers and soft waves are doing exactly what they need to do for fine hair: creating an illusion of volume to the hair. The chin length choice is smart because it isn’t long enough to feel like you have hair but short enough that gravity isn’t pulling everything down. Those feathered bangs are very clever they draw the focus exactly to the eyes and bridge of the nose and in a really flattering way. I will be honest though, those waves are not fully wash and go. A bit of time will be needed with a curling iron or even a diffuser to get it bouncy and textured and the rest will need to be refreshed. Not high maintenance but you were right, not low maintenance either.
#8: A Disconnected Pixie for When You Want Something Bold
This haircut is amazing! It takes a special kind of person to be able to pull this off! The bangs with the different layers take incredible artistry! It really gives fine hair looks like it has volume! Also, it is important to keep repeating how much work is put into these angles! It is super intentional, with all the length and the light! Especially the unevenness! For people who do not want to spend 20 minutes staring into the mirror every morning, this style is a huge win! Once you go pixie, you’re going to need to keep trimming it because the style is going to go away once the hair starts to grow. Most definitely if you like to stand out this is a great choice!
#9: Pink Ombre with a Hidden Undercut
I find this option enjoyable and think it works better than most for fine hair. The undercut adds weight underneath so the top layers can go up higher, which creates more volume. The pink ombre on top makes the whole thing feel more youthful and a bit more unexpected. The shift from the dark roots to the bright pink is super pretty and can suit lighter skin tones. The reality is, pink hair fades quickly. Really quickly. So you will be touching it up often, and you will be watching it go from baby pink to a washed-out salmon which may bother you. With the short length, it won’t be a huge deal if you decide you want to grow it out again.
#10: Pastel Pink Bob with a Clean Fringe
I like the styling, with the straight fringe, and the precise jawline cuts – it all looks more polished than costumey. The pastel pink is a brilliant color choice – on fine hair, lighter shades reflect light and create an illusion of more hair. The fringe really frames the face well – and if you have an elongated face, you’ll want to break up the vertical. This is the type of hair that says you go to the salon a lot. Just keep in mind that the color will fade, and the fringe will grow into your eyes pretty quickly. However, if you appreciate that relationship with your salon, then the look works.
#11: Bouncy Caramel Bob with Soft Bangs
If you have fine hair a bob with wispy bangs is a good hairstyle option, and this is a great example of why. It gives a rounded appearance, and short layered cuts have more movement. It won’t just sit there and look boring. The wispy bangs make the hairstyle look approachable. The caramel color is a great option because it will help disguise the thinness of the hair. Lighter colors will help create the illusion of depth. If you have fine hair you may notice the volume drops throughout the day. A volumizing powder will help with that.
#12: Caramel Bob with Feathered Waves
The waves and layers make this style soft, and the technique used creates good thickness. The caramel highlights make the fine hair look thicker. I also think the length is good; it’s short enough to be manageable, but long enough to still be versatile. You can tuck it behind your ears, pull the front back, and a few other styles. The side swept bangs are good if you have a wider forehead. The only thing I would say is that shorter styles like this require more maintenance than longer styles. The grow out can look shapeless after six weeks or so, so just something to keep in mind.

Glossy bobs have a classy look to them, and the straight fine hairs appear denser without weight to pull the hair down. A cut that sits right at shoulder length is perfect for this. Delicate bangs are ideal, as thick bangs on fine hair would look sad and see-through. Most face shapes suit this hairstyle. Bangs can be made shorter and a little texture can be added to suit the style more. The sharp edges and polished look come from the regular maintenance needed with dark hair, due to the roots growing in.

I keep coming back to this one for how sweet it is. The wispy texture for fine hair is awesome because it helps keep things light and airy instead of forcing thickness that isn’t there. The chin-length cut is really nice because it helps to frame the face and create a youthful lift. The feathered bangs may look good, but they grow out quickly, so you’ll have to learn to trim them yourself or do that in between appointments. I love that with this style, daily maintenance is kept to a minimum – you can towel dry it, run your fingers through it and you’ll look put together!

If you want a hairstyle that requires the least amount of daily fuss and adds more body to your fine, straight hair, a long bob could work for you. This look does require some face framing layers which will help soften your overall look and Also help to bring out any natural waves in your hair. If you happen to have hair that is straight and lacks any natural wave, try applying a little mousse to your damp hair and scrunching it up to create some waves. Be forewarned about face framing layers falling in front of your face. This is easily fixed by tucking the layer behind your ear. If you want to add a little more drama, a subtle balayage will really stand out. The combined look of long bob + balayage will give your hair some dimensionality and more depth. This hairstyle is definitely not limited to casual settings and can look great for work as well, since it is low maintenance and adaptable.
#16: A Clean Mid-Length Cut with Soft Layers
There’s a finer textural cut, and you might like it quieter this way. The understated layering is just enough to shift some pieces while maintaining a simple finish, and the dark shade contributes some depth that thickens the appearance of the hair. Most people won’t be able to pinpoint what’s changed about your hair, but it certainly looks great, and that could be the biggest compliment of all. This length and shape is particularly nice for a face that’s oval or heart shaped. The one thing I would say is that fine hair is prone to sitting a little bit flat with a cut like this, so a bit of root lifting spray and a quick blowdry goes a long way!

It’s great how well the color and the cut go together! The lighter blonde color and slightly darker roots create a beautiful natural dimension and give the fine hair a super voluminous look. Side-swept bangs are very eye-catching, especially for those with oval or longer face shapes. This is because it provides a nice diagonal sweep across the face. Though the layers will require a round brush to get them to fall into place, it will become routine once you learn the blow-dry technique. Asymmetrical cuts are my favorite type of haircut. The different lengths draw your attention away from the thinness of the hair. The shorter side will add so much more interest than a straight bob. Plus, the deep jet black color is a great way to add depth to the whole style. With the longer side you have so much versatility whether you want to sweep it across your forehead or tuck it back. Having definied, intentional lines on the cut is aesthetically pleasing, meaning that side will be needing some regular trips to the salon. That also goes for the color as well. This haircut is great for the workplace and it is perfect for people who want to look put together without taking too long on their hair.
#21: A Simple Mid-Length Straight Cut
For fine hair, a mid length blunt cut is often a great option becuase it requires minimal styling to look good. The blunt cut has no layers which means density is maintained at the bottom ends of the hair. This gives the blunt tip an overall thicker, richer, and straighter look. Overall, the straight finish with the darker shade is a flush, rich color. It is an ultra low maintenance style as it very likely will require just a wash and maybe a blow dry. However, if you like hair that is moving and has a lot of volume, then a blunt cut might not be the best for you because it can be a little too flat. For people with fine hair, just a wash and simple blowdry is easily thrown together with the right haircut.
#22: Rich Auburn Feathered Layers
The feathered layers give the fine hair more movement and the warmer auburn color flatters a lot of different skin tones. This a versatile mid-length style that can easily be transitioned from the office to dinner. While I think this is a solid choice, I do think that it is rather boring. It is okay that it is dependable, but it would be nice for it to be more exciting. For the color to stay vibrant, some maintenance will be required. Without the proper products, auburn can fade to a murky tone so be sure to speak to your stylist about a color protecting conditioner.
#23: Chestnut Waves with Face-Framing Pieces
Soft waves paired with face framing layers create lots of movement and layers add volume to the fine hair without sacrificing fullness. The warm tones in the chestnut color create a nice depth. For me, this style is ideal for oval and round face shapes where a soft effect around the jawline is desired. This is an easy style that won’t fall apart the moment you step outside and get caught in a slight breeze. The fine hair helps to keep the style from being weighed down during the day and it looks good. Light hair creates better movement throughout the day which is what my fine haired clients always tell me.
#24: Pastel Balayage on a Wispy Little Bob
This hairstyle may take some time, but in my opinion, best style most worth the time and commitment. It gives the hair a wispy, soft look with a subtle lavender/pink tone pastel effect. This gives more dimension to fine hair and creates a more interesting visual. It can also give the illusion of length. Since the ends of the hair are cut to collarbone length, the hair appears to be shorter. You will be keeping all of your density concentrated rather than distributed thin over a longer length. This gives the appearance of shorter hair, giving some subtle texture . Pastel colors tend to fade quickly, meaning more maintenance and color refreshing. Be honest with yourself about how much time you’re willing to put into this hairstyle before committing. It is a great style, however if you think the maintenance will be too much of a commitment, consider something lower maintenance.

I probably wouldn’t style it too much, a light smoothing serum would probably be enough to keep that natural texture and not weigh it down. The more products you use the more you lose that effortless quality that makes this haircut work.

This style looks like it took hours to get ready for, when in reality, it is very simple to do! The back layers and crown layers create volume in flat areas that tend to fall with fine hair. The chocolate color is a great finishing touch to the richness and density of the style. This is also ideal if you have a rounder or squarer face since it helps to soften a jawline which is a lot more flattering. The layers will need to be reshaped every six to eight weeks because after that they lose the effect of being stacked and lose the clean, smooth look. This is actually a pretty manageable timeframe for the majority of people.

I appreciate your boldness in choosing an espresso-colored pixie cut, especially with fine hair! The espresso color is very warm and rich and truly gives a lovely frame to your face; the fringe also looks great. Short fine hair will definitely work in your favor because there will be a natural lift, and you won’t lose any volume. I really love the slight asymmetry in the bangs because it stops the look from being too uniform. Short hair does require regular maintenance. It’s about every four to five weeks to keep everything looking intentional and not scruffy, and after that it can look worse at the ends. When I talk to clients that have fine hair, I always bring up the undercut option. It creates so much more volume. With less product, the lifted top layers let hair higher and gives you the freedom to style your hair however you want. The bob is meant to be more edgy and will require maintenance to keep the undercut fresh, but the volume makes it worth it. Oval and heart shaped faces are best suited for this hairstyle.

I love this LOB! It’s versatile and works for just about everyone. With this length, you have the option to wear it up, curled, straight, etc. The ends are texturized to help fine hair move and give it that extra body. Chestnut brown is a low-maintenance color – no more worrying about roots! The layers in this cut help to create mid hair volume which is really nice and photographs well. This look will take some styling to create the bouncy look, but it’s not hard!

I keep coming back to the chin-length bob with feathery bangs for many reasons. It highlights my jaw, the layers give it more fullness, and the bangs change the weight of the style while still giving it a good face frame. Plus, the deep, rich color adds a lot of depth, and makes my hair look even more full. In general, this style is appropriate for polished, professional settings. To be honest, it isn’t a wash and go style because the bangs are cut and styled a certain way so there will be some tucking involved. The outline of the cut will need to be maintained as well. There will be some time needed in the morning for some brushing and blow drying so keep that in mind as it’s a lot of upkeep.

The way the color shifts is really nice. Deep blonde roots and light end create a multidimensional look that is really nice and easy to achieve. In the cut’s defense, it’s built for the client who says, “sure, I want to look good, but I don’t want to do anything.” With the cut, some subtle movement is created with the layers so that the hair isn’t totally flat to your head, and some light feathering around the face is soft and flattering and is generally not too obvious, but a street stop is likely not in the cards with this cut. However, a good length is achieved to be worn every day with little-to-no effort, so fine hair is good with this type of shaping, as you will be working with what you have, not what you don’t. For maintenance of the layers, all it takes is some regular trims. S simple as that.
#34: Wavy Asymmetrical Bob with Warm Tones
The waves also do volumizing work and create some asymmetrical interest with the ends, giving the illusion of thicker and more purposeful hair. The hair is cut so that it sits just above the shoulder which keeps hair from being weighed down. I think this works especially well for people with existing natural waves, as it will be a fight to style straight and fine hair into waves everyday. I like this look for someone looking to streamline their morning routine as short hair takes way less time to style and prep. The only drawback is there are limited styling options with a pixie cut, so you cannot get too creative with it. You will need to make appointments at the salon regularly to maintain your cut and touch up the color. This style is particularly flattering for oval and heart-shaped faces, and there is often a surprising youthful look that comes with it, especially when people go short for the first time.
#36: Two-Tone Bob with Precision Bangs
You may find that the very obvious contrast between the pale blonde and deep brunette is appealing or not so much, as there is not much of a middle ground here. If it is an appealing look to you, we suppose it is a good option for finer types of hair since the dark roots help create an illusion of more hair when the scalp is exposed, and the light ends also help keep it contemporary. Getting and maintaining the volume is totally a trade off, as fine hair tends to fall flat. A good volumizing dry shampoo will do the trick after the first day.

This pixie has a nice edginess and the burgundy accents add some interest without being costumey. The texture fine hair really helps create the illusion of more volume and movement. Probably good to add a little light mousse through the hair while it’s damp and you’re done for the day. The short length opens up everything, so it works across different face shapes. Very short cuts probably do need to be trimmed every four weeks to maintain their shape, but for a lot of people the trade off is worth it because styling takes next to no time.

I like the directness this style shows. The subtle layers soften and add movement without being overly complicated and with fine hair, that soft texture will help it appear more healthy and have more volume. It’s an adaptable shape that works for most face shapes and I think it looks especially good on women in their 40s and 50s because it gives an effortless confidence. Styling shouldn’t be too complicated, maybe a bit of texturizing spray so it’s light and fluffy, but otherwise there’s not too much maintenance which is what most people want with a style like this.
#41: Chin-Length Blunt Bob with Face-Framing Softness
I enjoy blunt bobs for fine hair because the blunt ends add thickness to the hair, avoiding that wispy look from thin ends. I also really like the face-framing pieces as they help keep the look soft and not too harsh. Chin length is really flattering. For rounder face shapes this look is even better as it helps elongate the features, which is a bonus! This cut really highlights the straight fine texture of the hair. For that sleek look, a quick blow dry with a flat brush is a must, otherwise the fine hair can tend to dry a bit limp. All together, this look really isn’t a whole lot of work for how polished it is.
#42: Textured Short Shag with Soft Waves
The shag cut is great for fine hair because it offers a smooth layered texture which gives more movement and volume without needing to use much product or time to style. Soft waves give it personality and a medium brown color adds warmth. It is ideal for oval or heart-shaped faces because the layers frame the face. One downside of a shag cut is that it does take some maintenance—you don’t want to go too long in between cuts, or the layers will be a melted mess and you’ll lose that look. It will lose definition too, so be sure to use a sea salt spray to define the waves when you’re not washing your hair.

If your hair is fine you will have to get it cut regularly because otherwise it will just look really old and worn. This will happen particularly if your ends split a lot.

I’m doing another shag and I’m not even sorry. This one is amazing. It has some nice wispy bangs that frame the face so well. The layering gives more movement to the hair that individual fine strands lack. The mid-length cut is the right call here; it’s long enough to be versatile, but short enough to keep the volume that comes naturally. A flexible hold spray will be your best friend to maintain the shape of the shag as it can lose its definition. The ideal look is light and breezy, and the best part is that it shouldn’t be too serious!
