I had a client in her forties with long hair who had been advised to grow out her hair as it would help ‘balance’ her round face. Right or wrong, it’s a common belief. When I brought her to a bob with some texture that barely touched her jaw, she looked in the mirror and said, ‘I look like me again.’ It made me think how a shorter style on a round face does not contradict or fight the shape, but rather, works with it, in a way that longer styles can’t.
Over the years, what I seem to have picked up is that there is no one magic answer, and that the end result is about achieving a look that has movement, with a cut that falls in the right place to complement and draw attention to the features. Many will feel as if they are perfect for you, while some may just make for a good chat with the stylist. I have put together twenty five styles that I believe will be worthwhile to present, and I will tell you what I see in each.

#1: A Clean Bob That Knows When to Quit
This cut is chin length, and I think the restraint is part of what makes this style so great. The ends are soft enough to create movement, but it does not aim to be overly styled. For those of you who have finer hair, you may find that you appreciate the volume coming from the cut itself rather than a ton of product. The subtle framing around the face draws attention to the center without being too distracting. This bob will require maintenance, as it is the type of cut that looks put together when styled and a bit messy when not.

#2 A Cropped Pixie with Just Enough Warmth
The one thing that stands out to me the most is color. That warm light brown with some gold running through it looks so beautiful against the skin. Almost as if it’s glowing. The cut looks good longer on top with soft waves that give it some life without looking like you tried too hard. For fine hair, this type of texture looks so full which is a nice trick. You will have to come in to keep the shape from getting muddy, but day to day this look is as easy as it gets.

#3 Curly Lob with Bangs That Actually Cooperate
I love it when a person looks at their natural curl pattern and chooses to embrace it instead of trying to fight with their hair, and this cut is a nice reward for that. The bangs aren’t heavy enough to create a hard line across the forehead, which is what you want with gentler rounder features. The shoulder length gives you room to play, and the layers through the mid-section keep everything from collapsing into one heavy mass. If your curls tend to get flat by the afternoon, you’re going to want a good curl cream and maybe a diffuser to get that kind of definition consistently. Otherwise, the shape itself is really well thought out.

#4 Layered Bob with Highlights That Do the Work for You
The highlights make the hair look as if it’s moving, especially framing the face. Thick hair can also benefit from layering as it gets rid of some bulk without sacrificing the shape. While this may sound easy, it really does take a good pair of hands. If you’re in your 40’s, this is a great cut as it gives you a modern look without being too trendy.

#5 Copper Bob with Bangs That Frame Everything Right
What I noticed first was that stunning copper color. This type of color can be very shifty in different lighting. Unlike cooler shades, this copper color will warm up your skin. The cut rests just above the shoulders with just enough added texture at the ends to keep it a little more interesting The bangs will require the most upkeep as they can go from fresh to grown out in a flash. Once it’s all done, it really comes together creating a polished and playful look.

#6 Curly Bob with Highlights That Add Depth
If you possess voluminous naturally curly hair, this is the type of haircut that will allow you to step out of the way and let the haircut do the talking. As for the highlights, they will become buried within the curls and create a sense of depth that you can’t achieve with just one process color. My biggest concern would be moisture. Given the tight nature of your curls, keeping them hydrated is a must. So, a deep conditioner that you use on a weekly basis will be a great ally here.

#7 Short Textured Cut with Bangs That Soften Everything
This sits right on the jawline, which is a length I go back to a lot for round faces because it offers a visual endpoint which gives the face some structure. The bangs are more wispy than blunt, and that distinction matters more than most people realize. The natural wave in the hair is doing a lot of the lifting in terms of movement and body. There are subtle highlights woven through that give it texture you can almost see by looking at it. Low fuss overall just keep up with your trims.

#8 Burgundy Angled Bob with Some Real Attitude
Angled bobs are a favorite of mine, and the burgundy here elevates it. It has a depth that is classy rather than costumy which is a fine line to walk when it comes to reds. The back to front (top to bottom) angles offer a natural elongation through the jaw, and soft layers give the look a little bit of geometry which is great. Be warned however, this rich hue is likely to fade quicker than you’d like so you’ll want to keep that in mind when budgeting for color refreshes.

#9 Soft Curly Lob with Layers That Fall Where They Should
The person who created this clearly has some experience as they understand how the various layers catch the light. The face frame pieces are also spot on as they help soften the overall look and draw focus to the center. If your hair is fine and straight, then you will need to curl it in order to create the effect this look provides. This look is also great for medium to thick hair that is wavy or curly.

#10 Short Curly Cut That Knows Exactly What It’s Doing
The soft curls are gently cut to just sit above the jawline, and somehow they just fall around the cheekbones. This is a big enough move to be short, but not so short that it loses the texture. The most important thing about the face framing curls is that they highlight the cheekbones without being too obvious about it. This style does take a bit of upkeep to maintain the definition in the curls and the overall shape. But if you enjoy the styling, then this is a wonderful haircut to have.

#11 Voluminous Curly Bob with Color That Moves
The influence of this multi-dimensional color is striking! Every single curl is going to reflect the light in a unique way, and hair will have so much movement, even when it’s completely still. The balancing layering is aimed at removing bulk in the areas where it tends to build up (like at the nape and around the ears) while still managing to retain an overall rounded, full, and complete shape. Especially for medium to thick curly hair, this kind of layering is important as it creates the distinction between curls that are intentional versus curls that simply appear to be a lot of hair.

#12 Asymmetrical Bob with Highlights That Know Their Place
The asymmetry is slight. This scenario is not one of the more dramatic angle cases. think of more of a gentle push suggesting that everything doesn’t have to be perfectly even to look complete. The highlights are nice and well distributed which brightens everything up in a more natural, non stripy way. The way it looks to me, I’d say this would suit someone with fine to medium hair best and someone looking for the sort of look that seems like it would have taken more effort than it actually did. Chin length is very forgiving and very easy to grow out so it can be done gracefully if you ever want to change direction.

#13 Short Crop with Texture That Creates Fullness
Here is an smart cut for fine hair. The cut and layers look like there is are more volume than there actually is. The hues there appear to be more depth. Phrased closely, but is not done harshly, and offers enough space on top for styling options. This is one of those cuts that looks effortless, but requires good texturising spray for pieces, and more finger styling, less, it tends to look a little flat by midday.

#14 Copper Curly Bob That Brings Its Own Light
The copper hues in curly hair give the illusion of multi-dimensional spirals that seem to glow as though light is hitting them from multiple angles. The layered cut is good too, allowing the curls to spring up without getting tangles. For naturally curly medium to thick hair, this is one of those hairstyles where the cut does the talking while you do the talking with the right products. A lightweight anti-frizz serum will work wonders here.

#15 A-Line Bob with Ombre That Stays Quiet
I appreciate the restraint shown in this ombre. It is not a dramatic looking ombre, but it still brings some brightness to the ends, which lifts the overall cut. The A-line shape that skims the jaw is universally flattering, and the soft bangs keep it feeling approachable. This is the sort of cut I would recommend to someone wanting a change, but who doesn’t want a drastic shift in their look. The ombre will grow out well, and that is a practical consideration that often gets overlooked when people choose a color technique.

#16 Blunt Bob with Bangs That Earn Their Keep
I love a clean blunt bob. The bangs add a nice touch since the rest of the cut is so structured. The nice thing about this cut is that it suits both straight and slightly wavy hair. I also recommend this cut to those with medium density hair. Because of the weight of the hair, the cut will hold the shape for a while before your next appointment. If you like this style, you won’t have to put in a lot of effort to maintain it. If you want a change, a mid-length balayage will give you some nice dimension.

#17 Wavy Textured Bob with Highlights That Blend Naturally
The face-framing layers were executed really well; they move with you and sit really nicely when you are still, which is harder to achieve than one would think. The highlights blend with the waves just like sun and that’s the aim of the game with this type of color work. For medium to thick hair, this length bob is one of those versatile cuts that will carry you through the seasons. It looks equally as good air-dried with some sea salt spray as it does blown out smooth.

#18 Cropped Texture with Layers That Open Up the Face
This is a good shortcut that does its job well. The face framing layers add some definition to it, while the tousled texture stops things from getting too serious. On fine to medium hair, this kind of layering creates an illusion of more hair than actually exists, which is a small but significant victory. Importantly, it makes a positive difference to how you see yourself. It is easy to style and also very forgiving if you decide to skip a day. I find this is more important to a lot of my clients than pretty much anything else.

#19 Blunt Bob with Rich Color and Soft Bangs
The color is something I’ve revisited several times. This deep and rich tone gives the whole cut some weight and purpose. The bangs are soft enough to avoid that heavy curtain look and the length sits right above the shoulders which hits that sweet spot where it’s long enough to pull back but short enough to feel like a real change. For medium to thick hair, this cut will give you a naturally full silhouette without the need to style it. The blunt line will stay crisp with regular trims and this is vital as once it starts to grow out unevenly, the whole cut will lose its polish.

#20. Pixie with Golden Highlights That Catch Right
IMG CLASS=”SIZE-FULL WP-IMAGE-98956″ SRC=”HTTPS://WWW.LATEST-HAIRSTYLES.COM/WP-CONTENT/UPLOADS/GALLERIES/09/16/CHIC-TEXTURED-PIXIE-CUT-WITH-GOLDEN-HIGHLIGHTS.JPG” ALT=”CHIC TEXTURED PIXIE CUT WITH GOLDEN HIGHLIGHTS” WIDTH=”1200′ HEIGHT =’1500’/ >
Golden highlights throughout this pixie cut add dimension to the full look without being too heavy. With the layers on top, it feels like the thick movement has been achieved, and the clean look on the sides and back is a plus. Pixie cuts are one of those things you either love or hate, and usually, no amount of convincing will sway you either way. But if you’ve been considering going shorter, this is a great reference. Fine to medium hair will give you a look very similar to this. The hair can be worn straight and smooth or you can achieve a tousled look by using your fingers.

#21 Textured Short Cut with Highlights That Add Quiet Dimension
This haircut has good structure and the right amount of texture to keep it looking intentional. The highlights give depth, and at this length, I think that’s more of a smart approach than contrast. Soft layers provide fine hair volume. If you have a lot going on, then this is the type of cut that is versatile enough to go from running errands to dinner, and doesn’t need to be restyled. Honestly, that is worth more than most style features.

#22 Deep Blunt Bob with Bangs That Mean Business
The color depth makes the haircut stand out. On the whole, warm, saturated colors make the cut appear deliberate and a bit dramatic. Because the bangs are soft, the overall look is less severe. The hair appears to have medium density which is ideal for this type of haircut, giving that full, solid look. When you go for a blunt bob, you have to keep the ends trimmed to maintain that precision.

#23 Textured Bob with Face-Framing Highlights That Feel Right
Face-framing highlights work to soften the overall look and draw attention to the face in a more subtle way. Layering your hair into softer waves will create some body and movement so the hair doesn’t just sit flat against your head. Speaking of body, this hair cut hits at the jawline which is one of the most universally flattering lengths. I rarely have to talk anyone out of that. A few face framing layers are always appreciated, especially if you have a more angular face. This honest haircut suits you really well.

#24 Curly Bob with Layers That Let Each Curl Breathe
The first thing that draws my attention is the effort that goes into adjusting each of the layers to the individual curl patterns. Each curl is well spaced out and has enough room to fully form, which is quite the accomplishment given the length. The cut is just below the jawline, and the shape is nice and full, but not too much. This is an ideal structure for thick to medium textured curly hair. You’ll want to invest in some curl defining products to get that intentional look. The bones of this cut are doing most of the work for you!

#25 Warm-Toned Textured Bob That Feels Like Coming Home
This combination of warm chocolate brown and soft woven highlights is reminiscent of those hair colors that get a lot of compliments that people can’t quite pinpoint the reason why. The layers give the hair movement and body without the clumped, wispy look that is common with overly layered hair. The mid-length is easy to manage while growing out, and that’s always something I consider when cutting because the best haircuts are the ones that look good months down the line. For those with thick hair, this exact color technique would look good, though you may require a few more layers to get that same light, airy feel.
