After doing hair for a long enough time, I didn’t want to keep giving myself “pat on the back” accolades for giving age-appropriate haircuts. The truth is, my clients over 60 looked the best, and I told the most unapologetic truth. Contrary to popular belief, I don’t think people should play it safe and try to have boring hairstyles just because they happen to be older. To me, some of the most exciting haircuts have been for women in their sixties. When I would ask what she wanted, she would say, “I want something different,” and she would actually mean it.
Women go through this more than men, and what I’ve seen is once a woman gets the right haircut, she starts to embrace looking her age without any of the stress. Haircuts transform her from simply being “the same woman” to having her life together. Maybe she even has an impressive wine collection. I am showing hairstyles that include some strong opinions of mine. Most of them are pixie cuts and other styles that have that important-business-meeting kind of energy. I think you will agree with my opinions without me having to spell it out.

#1: That Warm Chestnut Bob That Practically Styles Itself
If my favorite aunt were to sit in my chair tomorrow, this would be the cut I would give her. The warm chestnut color does a lot of the heavy lifting here. It captures a lot of light which makes it look really expensive, even without trying. The layers are just enough to give you that “I woke up like this” movement, without the thirty-minute blowout drama. If you have fine/medium hair, and you’re sick of it just hanging there, this is your answer. A little styling mousse scrunched in while it’s damp, and you’re done, go live your life!

#2 Silver Pixie That Doesn’t Mess Around
I won’t apologize for being biased toward a good silver pixie, and this one calls for an unapologetic bias. It has the layered TEXTURE that gives fine hair something to do, it plays fine hair instead of looking like a “I just gave up” situation. The silver here is bright and committed; none of that yukky in-between yellowy shade people get when they’re only halfway embracing their natural color. If you’re going silver, go silver like this! The cut sits close enough to the head that your bone structure becomes the star of the show, which is exactly the point.

#3 Textured Bob with Those Perfect Soft Bangs
What caught my attention about this particular style was the bangs. They have the soft effortless look that most people try to achieve. I have noticed that many women over the age of 50 tend to steer clear of bangs. It is a shame because when done well, these bangs can really change up the way the face is framed. The shoulder length is still very on trend and the texture at the ends is just enough to keep it interesting. You can expect to come in for trims every 6 weeks because a long bob with bangs no longer has the same vibe.

#4 Shoulder-Length Layers with That Effortless Bounce
This style gives the impression that the person has gorgeous hair naturally. It involves the creation of layers arranged in the middle to offer volume without making the hair appear “thinned out”, a common problem that is done way too often. I see this on oval and heart shaped faces the most, but there is certainly a lot more magic in how the layers move. If you want to achieve hair with character, a round brush and 7 minutes of your morning will do the trick.

#5 Soft Layered Cut That Moves When You Do
I love the shoulder-length hairstyle and silver tones. Not enough people appreciate how stylish and intentional a lighter hue looks against the backdrop of your hair’s natural progression. Many people fear the look may become washed out, but that is unlikely. In this case, the layering is soft which means movement is less chaotic and more fluid. It’s the difference between looking polished and looking like you just stuck your head out of a moving car. With this look you do have to spend a little time in the morning with a round brush to create a soft bend at the ends, but overall it is really low maintenance.

#6 Shoulder-Length Waves That Know What They’re Doing
When clients show me pictures of haircuts and ask me, “But can my hair actually do that?”, I can almost always answer with a confident “yes”. If people’s hair isn’t doing what they want, they may be guilty of not asking it to do enough. Soft layers help achieve movement in even the straightest hair, while gentle waves that run throughout the hair midsection give it life without being overdone. If your hair isn’t too thick, this is one of the most dependable styles I can suggest because the results are consistently great right from the start. Even when people don’t wash their hair every day, it still manages to look good by day three. Using a little serum makes the hair look nice and keeps it shiny.

#7 Softly Curled Shoulder-Length Situation
The volume created by the curls is incredible. I should point out that the curls are not natural, and are a stylistic choice which means you have to use a curling iron or hot rollers. I’m telling you so you can make a fully educated decision on whether to purchase this or not. That being said, this will look amazing on you if you enjoy the process of doing your hair in the mornings. The most outstanding detail are the face framing pieces that soften everything and draw the focus exactly where you want it.

#8 Copper Bob That’s Making a Statement
This is also one of my favorite color choices! Warm copper on a textured bob is one of those combos that shouldn’t work as well as it does, but you see it and you’re like, oh, ok, I get it now. The color warms up the complexion in a way that cooler tones just cannot compete with, and the subtle layering gives the cut enough texture to prevent it from reading as a helmet. I’ll be straight with you, copper is a color commitment and very high maintenance. You’re looking at touchups every four to six weeks and then you’ll want a color-depositing shampoo to keep it vibrant in between. If you’re willing to put in the work, it is worth it.

#9 Layered Shoulder-Length with Gentle Waves
I think i get the type of style you would want to keep it casual and simple, but not boring. I like how this style can be flattering for many different hair types. I like how this style works especially well if you have fine hair because the layering can be more strategic than dense. The cut is the type of style that looks like no effort was put into the hair, but actually quite a lot of skill is required to pull it off.

#10 Rounded Bob with Highlights That Actually Make Sense
I don’t know how many terrible highlight jobs I’ve repaired, so when I see highlights done well on a bob I have to say something. These are done to create dimension and brighten the face without looking streaky and obvious. The rounded shape of this bob is timeless for good reason, it really does suit just about everyone and it has a way of softening more angular features while still looking intentionally structured. Chin length is the sweet spot here, long enough to feel like you have hair, short enough that you’re not dealing with it all the time.

#11 Textured Bob with Volume That Shows Up
I think of styles like this when someone with fine hair says they feel like they can’t get a bob. This cut is great with this texture, and the layers give the illusion of more hair. The length adds even more movement and fullness, so it will never look flat or limp. The most important thing in making this work at home is actually how you dry your hair. You want to focus on blowing up the roots to give it volume, and then let the layers do the work at the ends. It’s really simple when you have a good relationship with your blow dryer, and it’s really not complicated at all!

#12 Short Textured Cut with Wispy Bangs That Actually Work
The wispy bangs are great! I understand the term “wispy bangs” may sound intimidating for fine hair, but I swear they’re super flattering! The top section and side sections are cut to create the right amount texture so that the hair looks fuller and so that the hair feels light and fresh without feeling too chunky. This is a great option if you are thinking about a shorter haircut!

#13 Classic Silver Pixie That Earns Its Name
I consider this cut a “classic” as it exemplifies a style that not only looks great on women, but will look great on all women for years to come. It is also great to be able to choose a style that has that sort of timelessness. The layers are soft and give movement and overall make the haircut look less stiff. The natural silver looks bright and healthy, which tells me someone is using a good purple shampoo to keep any brassiness at bay. If you’ve already accepted your natural silver and are looking for a cut that honors it rather than fights it, this is the one.

#14 Curly Shoulder-Length Cut with Real Body
I feel happy when a customer has natural curls or waves and wants to work with their hair instead of straightening it. Those types of clients are my favorite! This cut works with her style because it lets her hair curl naturally without the layers forming a triangle, which is the number one fear of every curly-haired woman I have met. That fear about curls getting big is understandable. The face-framing layers are hidden in this style because they soften the area around her features and allow the rest of the curls to create the volume. Grab a curl cream and a diffuser and just leave it!

#15 Short Textured Cut with a Quiet Confidence
People might not scream and shout about this particular hair cut but it will definitely get the attention of a few. The way it has been cut means that it will sit just right. The colour has lifted to such a nice tone to ensure that the look stays soft and not harsh. The cut will suit people who spend about 4 minutes on their hair every morning. The colour will need maintenance at the salon to ensure it does not go brassy but as for the cut it is as low maintenance as it gets.

#16 Curly Bob with Character
I enjoy working with the natural gray and curls combination since it has a cool, effortless appearance. The various colors and textures unify the look. This bob length is ideal for curly hair and allows the curls to really spring and come to life. Most of the time, you don’t know how the curls will bounce and come alive, and this is how most of the curls have sprung in my career. The soft layers enable the shape to remain controlled, and the volume to be balanced, all around. The end result is simple and chic, which is what straight hair bobs strive for and is so much easier to have.

#17 Edgy Pixie with Volume on Top
This hairstyle is the absolute cutest style ever! A fresh haircut can make you feel like a whole new person! The style with the cropped sides and longer textured top creates height and visual interest around your face, changing the proportions in the best way. This style has so much personality, and you can make a difference at home with your hair by doing this too! Get a texturizing paste to achieve that lifted and piecey look for the hair to come alive! This is a wild style but if you love it, you will!

#18 Soft Bob in Silver That Looks Expensive
Some bobs have a certain charm and this specifically applies to bobs like this one, which express the wearer’s persona as someone who has a lovely kitchen and enjoys reading books. The soft layering on the silhouette keeps a smoothness and avoids the extremes on either end of the severity spectrum. The lightness of the hair looks amazing and is most definitely a result of the mix of professional and at home care. The base is quite adaptable and can be modified with the addition of low lights to the base, but it is also good as is.

#19 Textured Lob with Movement and Life
This is one of the most versatile styles I believe, it does not get enough credit. I love to do lobs because lobs do not fall victim to the one length trap like so many other styles do. They have enough layering to maintain movement and avoid that flat look that makes lobs look outdated. Subtle highlights through the mid lengths give brightness without looking like you’re trying to be 25 again. Chin length placements are very forgiving on face shapes and give a range of styling options from air dried and casual, to blown out and polished. That is the versatility you want from a haircut!

#20 Medium Layered Cut That Doesn’t Need to Try Hard
The first thing that caught my eye was the natural shine. No amount of cutting or layering can make a hairstyle look good if the person’s hair is unhealthy, but this hair looks genuinely healthy. At any age, this is the most important thing to start with. Soft layers throughout create that casual, effortless volume. It looks good, but it doesn’t look done, and it’s great hair just doing great things. If you’re the type of person who wants to wash, maybe lightly dry, and head out the door without thinking about it more than that, then this cut will be your best friend. It’s simple, but in the best way.

#21 Silver Layered Bob with Waves That Have Somewhere to Be
The waves on this silver bob add just the right amount of personality without going overboard (which is a very easy line to cross). The layers are soft enough to allow movement and flow, but maintain the overall shape of the bob, and the silver shade is that gorgeous bright color you get from good maintenance between appointments. If you have a round face shape, the length and layering will work to create elongation and the waves will keep the eyes moving.

#22 Shoulder-Length Face-Framing Layers
Face-framing layers are usually loved but not often done well and deserve praise. When done right, the layers blend beautifully with the rest of the cut rather than appearing to be an obvious, separated pair of curtain bangs. This effect is super flattering, allowing the hair to draw attention to the face. The layers that sit at the shoulders help to create balance to the overall look of the hair, which feels thick where it should.

#23 Textured Bob That Knows Its Angles
What stands out most on this bob is the length grazes the jawline. I love this as where a bob ends in relation to the face changes everything about how it reads. This is cut to sit right at that sweet spot that accentuates the jaw without making it look too harsh. The soft layers through the lengths add enough movement that it feels more than a blunt chop. The wave at the ends is just the right touch to elevate this style from “just a bob” to “a bob with a plan.” A grown out look will not be achieved with trims every six weeks.

#24 Feathered Pixie That Gets Compliments
The satisfaction of getting to do this style of feathered pixie numerous times over the years never ceases to amaze me. When executed properly, it surpasses the transformative potential of most longer hairstyles. The modern touch is added with the overall shorter length, along with the layered softness that frames the face. For finer hair that could use a little more texture, a subtle highlight is added that creates dimension. Moreover, this haircut will have people telling you that you look different, even if they can’t quite place the reason. In my opinion, that is one of the biggest compliments a hairstyle could get.

#25 Soft Waves with Layers That Frame Beautifully
The volume at the roots is great because it can easily be over done. This amount of lift is more than enough to prevent the hair from looking plastered down which is a common issue with finer hair types and one that this cut fixes nicely with the layering placement. The shoulder length waves are very natural looking, as if this person has slept on a braid and woke up looking like this. Although we know that’s not the case. It’s a simple style that suits multiple face shapes, making it a great choice if you are unsure about what you want, but want to make sure it looks good!

#26 Short Textured Cut with a Shimmer
The haircut looks so nice especially with the light reflecting on it! From the shine, I can tell that the hair is healthy and taken care of which is the most important to me. It looks like the cut is clean and not overdone, and the length is perfect so it stays easy to manage. It has the effortless style where you don’t have to say much to show that you put thought into it. I think that’s the most stylish thing you can have!
