On my very first appointment, a lady in her sixties walks into my salon and sits in my chair. She confidently starts describing her hair color choice. While she was describing it, I could see the excitement in her face as it looked like she was ready to express herself. I could see that she was ready to unveil the vibrant, bold, and colorful self that she had been holding in. I could see that she did not want to look younger, nor was she trying to prove something. I could see that she was simply trying to express her true self.
How expressive a person can be using color is often misjudged when a person is over sixty. When I discuss and prepare my clients to select colors that I think are going to be most suitable to complement their skin and eye tones, I often see a shift in their energy, and seem to come to life, and everything just seems to fall into place.
In my experience, the most daring and most bold color choices come from women over sixty who have typically chosen to play it safe all their lives. After years of avoidance, it is very clear that a lot of their instincts are spot on. They just seem to see the gaps left by their contemporaries and to understand the nuances of their choices at a level that is very different.
I have selected five of my best looks (which feature bold color choices, as well as softer, and more muted options to ensure there is something that appeals to everyone), for you to use as inspiration to make the leap, should you choose to do so. I want to help you to feel and look great about yourself.

#1: Peachy Pixie with Soft Texture Through the Crown
Short, light layers like this, with some nice warmth, are great with skin tones, as they aren’t too sweet. The way the layers are styled also gives a nice lift to the crown, so it doesn’t just fall flat. A cut like this does a lot for fine hair, so you aren’t fighting with length and weight. Although the peach will for sure need some touching up every few weeks to keep that clean look, the cut is so low maintenance that it feels like a fair trade.

#2 Copper Pixie with a Natural Wave Running Through It
This hairstyle is all about the texture. The stylist highlighted the natural waves of the hair rather than working against them. The light reflection on the copper creates dimension with no effort. The cut is warm and the style gives off the impression that you just woke up and the hair fell perfectly into place. The copper shifts over time so beautifully and the fade on a good copper is almost as pretty as the fresh application.

#3 Golden Blonde Lob with a Soft Fringe That Frames Everything
The fringe is what makes everything come together. It is light and not too harsh, and helps to soften the forehead and gives the face something to peek out from under. Golden blonde is a color that suits a lot of skin tones, especially with buttery depth as opposed to too platinum. The depth of buttery color looks multidimensional, and layers through the length keep it from looking flat, and that is very important if your hair has lost some of its natural body over the years. With this one, you will be in the salon a lot as it requires color maintenance and keeping that fringe under control, but it is truly the type of style that pays off.

#4 Pastel Lavender on a Wavy Bob
Lavender is one of those colors that can work or not work at all, but here, it works. The bob looks soft while avoiding a costume look. The waves give enough body so that the bob looks polished rather than flat. This is a shade that is particularly pretty on people whose natural hair is mostly silver since the light base does a lot of the work for you. The waves add fullness right where it is needed: the face and mid-lengths. The overall effect is really pretty.

#5 Rose Gold Waves with Bits of Natural Gray Showing Through
What’s especially nice about this design is the collaboration of rose gold with natural gray. The way the color is finished with some translucency to show the silver underneath, rather than coating it all the way, is really nice. That blend is what keeps the look modern and not dated. The waves do keep everything relaxed and have that soft, unfinished quality. For fine thinning hair, the tapered shape is very good because it creates volume in the right places. If being in the salon every four weeks isn’t really your thing, then this cut will give you a longer runway in between appointments because the grow out works with the design.

#6 Silver Ash with Layers and a Soft Fringe
This look is intentional and the silver ash color is the most sophisticated and natural take on gray. The layers and fringe are cut to create movement without looking overdone, and the seamless fringe means no round brush battle is required every day. Plus, the mid-length layers prevent that awful limp look. If your hair is naturally thick, this chop will reward you for it, as the layered weights will hold their shape.

#7 Rich Chestnut in Long, Cascading Layers
I believe this color will age nicely over the six-week cycle because the chestnut will have enough red in it to stay warm as it fades, and gives thick hair a lot to show off. The long graduated layers will keep all of that satisfying weight and create movement. The volume in the front is flattering and gives a nice look, without looking styled to within an inch of its life. I appreciate this being longer than the typical look women over sixty are encouraged to get. Length only becomes a problem when the hair itself is too weak to support it and this hair clearly can.

#8 Vibrant Copper on a Layered Bob
The copper tone is incredibly skin flattering because it brightens the skin tone without making someone look washed out. The specific copper that is being described here is a very particular mix of red and gold. Depending on the person, a tone in that range could easily knock up to a decade off their apparent age. A bob that touches the shoulder is super versatile, as it allows for styles where the hair is pinned up, pulled back, or otherwise, and the available layering brings all the fine hair fullness that you could want. There’s no way to sugar coat it: this shade does require some commitment. Copper is a fast fading color family, but it is stunning when fresh.

#9 Silver Layered Bob with Face-Framing Pieces
The back graduation is short and the front is long and that is super well done. It really does elongate the neck and frame the jaw line nicely and without being too harsh. Balancing cuts like this is something a lot of shorter styles miss. The silver is polished and looks good and the layering is just enough to add some modernity to stop it looking like a basic bob. This one will need regular trims to keep the shape cosmetically tight but the daily styling is actually pretty low.

#10 Chestnut Layered Bob with an Easy, Natural Fall
Thank you for showing some restraint here. The chestnut color is warm without being too overpowering. The cut allows the hair to do what it wants rather than being forced into an unnatural shape. The layers mean you don’t have to use a volumizing product every morning to build volume. That said, if your hair is fine, a little lift at the roots can help prevent it from going flat by mid-day. There’s some subtle asymmetry in the cut, which I think is the best detail because it draws the eye upwards, giving the whole look more character without too much work.

#11 Tousled Jaw-Length Bob with Sun-Kissed Highlights
The highlights are designed to stay away from a stripey/overdone appearance by creating concentration where the light would naturally hit. The jaw-length cut complements the face well by drawing focus upwards toward the eyes. The tousled look adds texture to fine hair creating the appearance of more volume which is always a plus. This shape is quite versatile and works with many different face shapes because the softness around the edges helps to blur hard lines instead of emphasizing them. The hairstyle will need upkeep to maintain its shape with regular trims, but it’s more than worth it because styling takes only five minutes.

#12 Ice-White Pixie with Volumizing Layers
This certain white shade is extremely brightening to the point where it can capture photographs. It is clear and cooling. It makes the eyes the immediate focal point, which is just what you’d want a bob to do. The layers are adding volume in the right areas for fine hair, and the entire thing has a crispness to it that I really like. Ice white is definitely a commitment because you have to make sure it doesn’t turn yellow, so a good purple shampoo becomes part of your routine, but the cut itself is about as low effort as it gets.

#13 Light Blonde Layered Bob with Bangs That Soften Everything
Bangs really are a game changer. Take them away, and what you have is an average bob haircut. But with the bangs, you have an design that is far more flattering and intentional, and works well to frame the face. This shade of blonde is light, but it isn’t so pale that it becomes washed out. The colour and layering of the hair adds to the illusion of thickness and health. This is an excellent haircut that looks great in photos and equally good ‘lives well’ as well. It stays looking salon fresh, and just as good on a Tuesday afternoon as it does right after an appointment.

#14 Silver Shag with Feathered Movement
Shags are officially trending and they deserve to be. When the right person walks around with the right hair, a shag looks the most effortless compared to other cuts. This silver version has feathered layers which give fine hair a more volumized look. The movement from the face-framing pieces keeps the look relaxed. A light mousse or texture spray will get the most out of the style. It will be tedious to style, but the right kind of tedious.

#15 Copper Layers with Soft Bangs for a Refined Finish
The copper hue is warm enough to brighten the face without being too vivid or overwhelming. Soft side-swept bangs look more natural which is nice. The mid-length layers add volume to the thinning areas and looks good. This style is great because it looks like it took more effort than it really did. The hair color will need maintenance but the cut is forgiving enough to get you through the in between cuts so you won’t have to stress.

#16 Silver Bob with Soft, Intentional Waves
The calmness of this look really works for me. I mean the silver coloring is pretty and matches well with the gray. The chin-length cut that waves looks nice, but also adds enough personality to the style that it doesn’t look too sleek. Cuts like this look best on hair with natural cooperation, so if your hair is straight or slightly wavy, this is an ideal cut. If you have very curly hair, it would add a lot of effort to the cut, because you would need to be smoothing it constantly to keep the style looking nice.

#17 Blush-Pastel Tousled Bob with Volume Through the Layers
I find this blush tone softer than most pastel pinks, which is why I think it is more subtle and easier to wear. I think the color looks more like a glow rather than a color which I think is more flattering to mature skin than brighter pinks. The layers on the sides create plenty of lift and fullness, and the tousled finish stops it from looking overly sweet. This shade fades, and it fades quite noticeably, so if you want to maintain the color looking fresh a regular appointment is a must. That said, I find the color’s warmth really beautiful.

#18 Golden Wheat Blonde on a Layered Bob
If Platinum or Ash is too far of a jump, this is a smart option because it is much lighter than what you have. Golden wheat has a dimensional richness which keeps some depth visually, so it isn’t flat or one dimensional as very light blonde can look. The layers add volume at the roots and taper through the ends, which is very good for fine hair that needs some body on top. A toner will be required every few weeks to keep the color from going brassy. This will look very natural on straight to wavy hair.

#19 Rich Chestnut Waves at Medium Length
I believe the warmth of chestnut works particularly well with changes to the skin tone as one ages. It’s rich without being dark so it adds color to the face without draining it. The medium length is a sweet spot for most women, long enough to feel as if you have something to work with, but short enough that it doesn’t drag everything down. The waves enhance the natural texture and create movement that makes medium density hair look really full and voluminous. A simple but really great option.

#20 Copper Curls with Body and Life
This look accentuates the beauty of curls. The soft copper color gives a nice frame to the face. The volume the curls provide allow them to achieve a look that straight hair would have to work extra to create. All types and ages of curls need moisture to look their best so keeping a good deep conditioning mask on rotation is a must to maintain definition and control frizz. The beauty of this look is that it requires virtually no daily styling because the curls will do the work.

#21 Warm Auburn Tousled Bob
The auburn tone on this style appeals to me. For women over sixty, the auburn shade is often deemed too youthful, and so it is underutilized. Here, it looks warm, natural on the skin tone, and is not out of place. The bob looks nice because it looks a little messy and not super polished which is nice. In my opinion, this length looks manageable above the shoulders while still permitting a change in style. If your hair is thinner the layers should give you more volume. The fresh color looks great, however, maintenance will be required to stop it from becoming muddy to get the best of this beautiful color

#22 Strawberry Blonde Textured Bob
Strawberry blonde can be a pretty risky color, it’s easy to tip to one side or the other too much towards the pink or gold. However, this one does a great job. It brings enough warmth to the complexion to look good, but avoids looking too artificial. The fine hair creates more of an illusion of density due to the textured layers. The hair length is also practical; it is short enough to be easy to manage, but long enough to be playful. The overall effect is youthful without trying too hard. The won’t be a great look for you unless you are willing to go to the salon a lot to keep the tone soft and shape looking fresh.

#23 Chestnut Waves Brushing the Shoulders
For someone who wants to look polished with minimal effort when it comes to daily styling, this is the cut I would recommend. The layers fall into soft waves that become easier to master the more you get to know your hair. Most of the styling can be achieved with your fingers after a quick spritz of volumizing spray. The color chestnut offers a lovely warmth that is best paired with cooler skin tones. The shoulder length cut is flexible with one thing to keep in mind: the ends. Older hair requires consistent trims to maintain a healthy appearance. This style tends to accentuate more neglected ends than a style that has been cut blunt.

#24 Flowing Silver Layers with a Gentle Wave
Creating movement with layers without losing the overall shape of the cut is an especially challenging feat with thinner hair. In this case, the silver hue is, in fact, working with the natural gray. It’s a disarming and very clever effect. The chin-grazing length is a great compromise as it gives you length to play with without adding excessive weight. The waves will mean you have enough of a focal point to get away with very little maintenance and still look great, which I imagine is what the majority of people want from their hair.

#25 Caramel Waves with a Lived-In Root
The foundation of this look is the roots. The way the darker natural root color merges with the caramel tips is intentional and understated which means you can go longer between appointments and still look clean. The face framing caramel highlights are also clever as the lighter pieces are placed perfectly to reflect light and draw attention right where you want. The waves at the mid-length also help to create a polished look without looking over done. For finer hair this look is super impactful as the volume and movement does a lot.

#26 Lavender Pixie on Silvering Hair
I love the color lavender! The silver is working with, not against, it. If your hair is mostly gray or white, you can get this sort of pastel color with much less effort than would be required for darker hair, which means less damage, and that’s a good thing. The layered and textured pixie cut gives it volume and interest. The color adds a playful touch, but in a more sophisticated and less whimsical way. Of course, since the color will fade, this is not ideal if you like to visit the salon once a year. You’ll definitely need to keep up with this look.

#27 Textured Pixie in a Warm Natural Tone
Sometimes staying simple is the best approach, especially when what matter most here is the cut, and the warm natural color isn’t competing with anything. It’s just enhancing everything, and the real star here are the textured layers that give this pixie cut shape and movement. For fine hair, this type of layering creates a lot of fullness, and with the short length, your morning routine will only take a few seconds instead of minutes. You’ll need to get trims to maintain the structure of the cut, but that is a small price to pay for a style that looks this effortlessly chic.

#28 Soft Curly Lob with Auburn Warmth
I love the new auburn highlights! They’re applied in a way that they’ll capture and reflect the most light which will give the biggest impact. The natural, loose curl pattern, as well as the layering which enhances it rather than disrupts it, tells me this was cut by somebody who really understands curly hair. The lob length, which is just below the chin, gives the curls room to bounce without getting heavy and the entire look gives a beautiful, light and airy appearance. You may want to use a light curl cream to keep the curls defined, although it really isn’t a high-maintenance situation in any way.

#29 Soft Lavender Textured Pixie
This lavender shade is a terrific option to begin with for those looking to experiment with colors. While the lavender shade may be a touch more muted than other options, a cut above the ears provides a polished look to the jawline. The soft layers avoid the look of just flat hair, especially if the hair is fine. Although lavender is a nice choice, keep in mind that cooler tones tend to wash out more quickly than warmer colors. Be sure to talk to your colorist about how often you would like to come in for maintenance. While the color is new, it is a lovely look.

#30 Warm Chocolate Waves Framed by Soft Bangs
I really like the bangs. They help shape the overall proportion of the face. They soften everything but keep everything visible. The warm chocolate color adds softness while the richness of the color isn’t harsh. The gentle waves that look natural are also really nice. With fine to medium hair, I think the look can be achieved with a large barrel curling iron and about 10 mins. I really appreciate a haircut that has versatility and this is a look that can be styled casually or more dressed up.

#31 Short Textured Cut in Rich Auburn
Auburn is an excellent color choice for this style as it is confident rather than being an over-the-top kind of color. With this short style, rich colors get to do all the talking. When there is not enough hair to create a visual interest, the color becomes the focal point. The texture helps to draw a bit of attention and the short hair means styling can be as easy as you want it to be. If you have thick hair, you will probably need to have your stylist thin it out so the texture can be seen. For fine and medium hair, this should cut works beautifully.

#32 Blush Bob with Soft Bangs
I never stop recommending this color because Blush blends pink with soft neutrals making it super flattering for older skin without being too obvious. The bangs frame the face and soften the forehead so nicely, and the just above shoulder length makes it easy to manage while providing enough hair for styling options. Blush also does something really interesting with fine lines and almost diffuses them, which is a nice little bonus, although not the main intention. Being a lighter shade regular maintenance is part of the deal.

#33 Classic Textured Bob with Highlights That Know Their Place
I like the highlighting as they have shown some restraint, instead of a dramatic effect, they are providing some dimension and light to a textured bob that has good bones. The chin-length cut is universally flattering and the light layering creates movement without sacrificing structure, which is a combination that straight, medium density hair especially benefits from. This is a low-key style that looks good with very little intervention, and it gets better as it grows in because the soft shape evolves naturally instead of falling apart.

#34 Ash Blonde Lob with Gentle Waves
I love the ash tone; it’s a perfect combination of warm and cool. I think it’s super important to find the right shade of ash blonde because the wrong shade could easily wash you out. This one has the right dimension to ensure that doesn’t happen and the soft waves are what keeps the lob from being too sleek and sharp. This is a mid-length style that sits just above the shoulders so you can pull it back or wear it down and with fine low-density hair, the layered cut gives just the right amount of volume without looking over-layered which can create too many wispy bits. If you go this route, a brass-neutralizing toner at the salon will be key.

#35 Vibrant Copper Pixie with Textured Movement
This copper shade is definitely eye-catching, and on a pixie cut the boldness really shines because it has no room to be shy. The textured layers give fine hair an appearance of fullness, and, most importantly, that extra movement keep it looking fresh and alive. The face-framing effect is particularly flattering on oval and heart-shaped faces. The color does a lot of the heavy lifting here and with that bold color comes all the maintenance that this bright shade demands, such as frequent trips to the salon to keep the color from washing out and living in the muddy brown shade range. However, when the hair is freshly cut and the color is still vibrant, this is the kind of hairstyle that will turn heads for all the best reasons.

#36 Copper Curls with Layered Softness
I enjoy the mixture of copper and curls. With your hair in different curls, the way light reflects varying colors is something straight hair will never replicate. The color and curl together create depth and dimension, rather than just the color placement. The cut layers will provide a lot of bounce to the curls, giving an almost weightless feel. A cut above the shoulder will keep all of the curls in check. While the shape of the cut and coloring will need to be touched up every 6-8 weeks, the copper color will still be pretty and even a quick color fade will look good as it will change to a warm rosy tone.

#37 Soft Silver Bob with Layers That Create Movement
A well-cut silver bob has an understated and timeless elegance. The subtle layers here add just the right amount of movement to not look overly uniform. The chin-length cut is flattering on most face shapes as it offers a framing effect around the face without overwhelming the features. For fine to medium hair, you’ll get volume where needed and a streamlined look where you don’t. Silver can get brassy over time so a tonic will keep it looking fresh, however, the cut is low maintenance.

#38 Blue Bob with Soft Layered Texture
I think people with blue hair deserve some respect, as it is a color that requires an immense commitment. This particular shade of blue is a little darker than most, which suggests to me that it is purposeful and well thought out, rather than something that was done on a whim. A color like that is great with a jaw length bob as it is a statement without being too overpowering. The visual layers are great for finer hair as they create more movement and volume, and the cool tone is actually very complementary to a lot of skin tones. This color is going to require an immense amount of maintenance, so keep that in mind as you will need to visit the salon frequently and use color safe products. If you enjoy the maintenance, you will enjoy the color.

#39 Curly Silver Bob with Texture and Body
This length is perfect for showing off natural curls! The combination of curls and a silvery hue creates a stunning effect with minimal work. The layers give the curls a nice place to fall and add the fullness that makes fine to medium hair appear thick and healthy. The silver hue is modern and elegant. Unlike other colors, it works with your natural grey which is a plus. For the low maintenance, this look will offer a lot of impact. You will, however, need a good styling product to maintain the curl definition.

#40 Short Curly Cut with Highlights That Add Dimension
When a curly crop cut is enhanced with a few well-placed highlights, it is made to stand out, brightening it up and giving it depth, as opposed to looking uniform. Highlights break up a curly cut by adding contrast, with the highlights showing off the texture and the natural volume, and keeping the hair looking healthy and full without any styling. The look is fresh and flattering for rounded and oval face shapes, and the short hair is modern. Where curls need some definition, defining cream should do the trick, and overall the style is low-maintenance.

#41 Vibrant Burgundy Bob with Soft Bangs
Burgundy is an underappreciated color that more women should wear. It’s easier to keep clean compared to true red, and has nice warm tones due to being in the red color family. This shade of burgundy is deep enough to be sophisticated. The bangs are going to do what soft bangs do best, and that’s frame the face along with creating a flattering feminine focal point. The finishing with a slight layer adds body and movement to the bob, especially if your hair is on the thinner side. The color will require upkeep to look this good, but it is a nice change from the fashion shades since it tends to fade nicely.

#42 Soft Lilac Pixie with Tousled Texture
What sells it for me is that tousled finish. Otherwise, a lilac pixie could get a little too precious potentially, but the ease and textural chop balances it out and keeps it more down to earth and easier to wear. The layered cut gives the volume and movement that is great for finer to medium hair at this length, plus the lilac hue, at this softness, has a talent for brightening the complexion without overpowering it. Sure, bright pastels come with maintenance, so that is part of the conversation, but the cut and style is so easy. Styloing it is a breeze.

#43 Silver Layered Bob with Waves and a Face-Framing Cut
This design has a nice sense of movement because of the different layers and soft waves create texture without being too busy. Silver hair at shoulder length is elegant and this style is designed to show that while being practical. The style works for fine hair as it gives a weightless feel to the waves that thicker hair would not have. The framing pieces do a good job of directing attention to the features and leaving them unobstructed. The cut has a reputation for earning its keep through light tones that require upkeep and practical adaptability.

#44 Textured Silver Pixie with Lift at the Crown
Advantage of this style is that it elevates the head’s crown region which gives fine hair the perception of fullness. It also creates a more uplifting effect to the face. I also find that keeping the length shorter helps maintain a more modern look. The silver color is nice as it offers purposeful brightness to the style. The subtle layers around the face do frame it without being too obvious about it. This is a sign of a good haircut. This style is ideal for someone who wants to look good without having to invest in a lot of time. It is polished and effortless. A simple run through with your fingers in the morning is all that is really required to maintain that polished look.

#45 Textured Bob with Caramel Highlights That Warm the Face
The purpose of these caramel highlights is to add warmth and depth to the look, especially by the face and the middle lengths. Shoulder-length bob styles like these keep hair looking dimensional without the constant upkeep that comes with a full balayage or full color. Textured cuts like this one also help with movement and nice flow with medium density. The good thing about this look is how versatile it is. It can be dressed up or dressed down for any occasion, and the color will fade nicely in between appointments. Depending on your goals, touch-ups can be necessary. Grow out can be a little tricky.

#46 Silver Bob Touched with Lavender
Lavender hair tends to be more whisper, than shout. For someone not quite ready to go all the way and commit to a fashion color, that’s just right. The way it sits on the silver base is an added touch that gives some dimension to your hair. You could go a little above the shoulder with this and the just-above-the-shoulder is a great length for versatility, and the soft layers add some movement to your hair while the color creates just the right amount of individuality. The faded lavender is going to be the first thing that you see, but the touch-ups will be needed for you to keep it on your hair. Even when the color washes out, the silver underneath is going to be lovely.

#47 Textured Silver Pixie with Natural Shine
The focus of this cut is its simplicity. With Short layers and a silver color this cut has just the right amount of texture to create interest and that’s all it needs. The shine of the hair shows its healthy condition and that’s especially important as we get older. Hair that is older can quickly become dull so it’s important that this is well conditioned. The layers add a nice amount of volume to fine hair and helps make the hair look fuller without over-styling. Combined with the round and oval face this cut is very complimentary. The only thing I’d recommend as a product is a light shine serum and even that’s optional.

#48 Soft Pink Pixie with Textured Dimension
For a pixie cut, choosing a pink color is a brave choice. Having said that, the soft nature of the color helps tone down the youthfulness that that could be associated with it. Additionally, the softness of the color will go well with more mature skin tones instead of clashing with them like many bolder colors tend to do. The layered texture adds more movement and interest to the cut compared to a basic uniform length cut. This style particularly suits round and heart-shaped faces. The height and texture created at the top have a lengthening effect. The color will require regular maintenance, but the cut is very low maintenance.

#49 Lilac Bob with Textured Ends
The ends of this cut are no doubt a standout detail. They will be able to maintain some texture in the bob and keep it from feeling too blunt or heavy, while also allowing the lilac color to catch the light. It’s also honestly the perfect length because with a shoulder length cut you can really feel the weight, but with this cut it’s not weighed down. The lilac is soft enough that it adds a bit of personality but it doesn’t wash out her features. It’s a color that works especially well on heart-shaped faces because the width of the bob balances the chin, which can be a bit narrower. It’s true that lighter colors require more upkeep but this is one of those shades where the sacrifice is certainly worth it.

#50 Lavender Bob with Soft Layers and Real Personality
I think this lavender shade looks great with naturally silver hair. It adds depth and some contrast to the hair, which would be otherwise flat and unvarying. The mid-length is nicely framing the face, and the soft layers also prevent the style from becoming too blunt, or too static. What I find most interesting about this look is how the color works with the person, rather than just sitting on top of them, which is often the case with fashion colors (good or bad). With fine hair, the layers do a good job at adding some volume and the lavender will fade, but it will also end up a gorgeous silver-mauve that honestly will look almost as good as the fresh lavender color. This is a great option for someone who wants to express something personal through their hair, but without making a huge statement.
