29 Envy-Inducing New Hair Color Trends Women Over 50 Are Pulling Off

I love when clients sit in my chair and ask for ‘just a touch of color.’ It give me hope for a fun and engaging appointment. These types of clients seem to be more common for me in my over 50 category clientele. And honestly? These are my favorite appointments. People seem to learn a deeper understanding within themselves the longer they’ve been on this earth. With a bit of wisdom and experience, these clients seem to grasp the idea that hair color is more than just ‘sitting’ on your hair. It really alters your entire being.

I still remember one client I had years ago. She had a dark brown color that she thought was her natural hue, and had lived with it for a long time. But once she went for some color with me and i warmed it up and added some dimension, she looked in the mirror and said, ‘now this is what I thought my hair should look like all along.’ Moments like that are what I call great hair color. It captures the essence of the client and doesn’t cling to out-dated versions of them or hair models from two decades ago. These 29 looks do exactly that and I was pleasantly surprised with some of the details that I discovered.

Warm Auburn Stacked Bob with Subtle Layers

#1: Warm Auburn Stacked Bob with Subtle Layers

Let’s be real, the stacking in the back is what makes this one really work. It gives you that natural lift at the crown without the need for any teasing or product build-up and the facelighting will soften the edges without any fuss. The auburn is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here because it warms up without going orange, which is trickier than people think. If your hair is on the straighter side, this is one of those cuts where the colour and the shape really do the work for you so you aren’t having to do a ton of styling to make it look interesting. You’ll be seeing your colourist a lot with this one but the cut is pretty forgiving between appointments.

Chic Layered Bob with Soft Bangs

#2 Chic Layered Bob with Soft Bangs

The bangs are great. They open up focus to the rest of the style without all the weight. The highlights being soft and understated makes the hair look a lot more dimensional. With hair this fine, that depth is really important to ensure the style doesn’t look flat by the end of the day. The ends have great movement and bounce, which says they were layered with some thought instead of just being stacked to give a nice shape. This is the type of bob you can leave to air dry and feel nice and put together.

Textured Ash Blonde Shag with Soft Layers

#3 Textured Ash Blonde Shag with Soft Layers

Shags are becoming more and more in style. Take this for example. The layered look gives the illusion of more hair, and is therefore good for those with finer hair. Plus, a fresh cool blonde shag means dated hair is not a problem. The length is just above the shoulders, giving enough room to pull it up if need be. However it is short enough for that undone look. You also won’t have to do much in the morning to achieve it. A light mousse through damp hair is all you need. You will have to keep up with regular trims since the shape of the layered look will be lost as the hair grows out.

Soft Curly Bob with Defined Layers

#4 Soft Curly Bob with Defined Layers

You can see how comfortable this person is with their hair, just by looking at this haircut. The layers are cut to allow the hair to spring, bounce and curl. This level of fullness can be difficult to achieve with curly hair, but the right layers make it look effortless. If you have got to the point where you are done with straightening your hair after battling with the curls, then this is a great style to have. You would need to use a curl defining product to keep the definition nice and clean, but besides that, the overall look will be pretty chill.

Modern Chestnut Lob with Face-Framing Layers

#5 Modern Chestnut Lob with Face-Framing Layers

The way the face-framing pieces draw attention to the cheekbones and soften everything around the jaw is great! The delicate highlights with a chestnut base are warm and flattering to the skin rather than washing it out. I appreciate this lob because it doesn’t rely on one kind of styling to look good. You could blow it out, or even let it air dry, and you could throw it in a low bun, and it would look great in all three. To hold onto that richness in the color, you’ll definitely need to use color-safe shampoo, but the payoff is real in how it catches the light.

Softly Textured Mid-Length Cut with Subtle Layers

#6 Softly Textured Mid-Length Cut with Subtle Layers

Most people would think a silent haircut is bad. In this case, that is definitely not true, and I mean that as a compliment. There is not a lot of self-confidence in this haircut, and the layers are just enough to keep them from falling too flat. The soft color of the hair is natural and complements the lightness of the cut. Worn with fine to medium hair, this cut still breathes. A little spray on the ends and you’d be out the door.

Soft Blunt Bob with Subtle Highlights

#7 Soft Blunt Bob with Subtle Highlights

Blunt bobs can be a hit or a miss. This one hits right at my jaw which is nice because it moves with me as I turn my head. The highlights help finer hair feel more substantial, so I like that they give just enough visual weight. It’s a simple cut that does not take much effort to style. You will need to keep it looking fresh with trims every six weeks, but outside of that, it is an easy cut to maintain. I like how simple and straightforward it is.

Playful Pastel Pixie with Textured Layers

#8 Playful Pastel Pixie with Textured Layers

The soft pink may not appeal to all individuals over the age of fifty, and that’s fine. But such confidence is rare, and a soft landing really does hit different. The texture that breaks up the layers keeps it from being too precious or appearing like a costume. The cut is practical; it is short and easy to manage. The color is really the outfit’s main personality. If it is calling to you, keep in mind pastels fade quickly and lighter colors need more upkeep, so that kind of schedule is going to have to be a comfort before diving in.

Textured Silver Blonde Shag with Feathered Layers

#9 Textured Silver Blonde Shag with Feathered Layers

The feathering around the face on this one is really nice. It adds softness to the cut and makes it a little less harsh. The silver-blonde color is very bright and flattering, and it catches the light really nicely. For fine hair, this kind of layered feathering is one of the best ways to add volume that lasts throughout the day. The front longer pieces give a more modern shape and give avoid the standard layered cut look. If you want to achieve a similar look, it’s really easy. All you have to do is use some mousse and scrunch your hair while it’s damp.

Elegant Soft Blonde Lob with Subtle Waves

#10 Elegant Soft Blonde Lob with Subtle Waves

The overall tenderness in this style is not just an occurrence. It looks like each element was chosen very specifically. The waves look free flowing and they do help the hair seem more voluminous and give it some texture so it does not look one dimensional. The length of the hair falls in the universally flattering zone at the shoulders which suits almost all face shapes. With hair that is fine, it is easier to make it look styled and fuller than it really is which is an awesome little trick. Compared with darker hair, this blonde colour will need maintenance more often to keep it from looking brassy. Overall, the cut and maintenance is in perfect balance.

Textured Chocolate Curls with Soft Layers

#11 Textured Chocolate Curls with Soft Layers

The movement in this one is nice! The chocolate colour has enough depth for the curls to show their dimension and the layering is well placed so nothing looks heavy or clumped. Some curls like this have balayage which would really open things up and give the whole style more life. If this is the kind of natural texture you are working with, its something to consider. Curly hair does require more moisture and definition. However, there is an ease to this particular cut which makes it seem worth the effort.

Sleek Silver Blunt Bob with Soft Textured Ends

#12 Sleek Silver Blunt Bob with Soft Textured Ends

I noticed the contrast between the clean line and the softer textured ends, creating some nice tension in the haircut. The gorgeous silver color definitely is a commitment – not only to the maintenance required to keep your hair healthy enough to hold that level of brightness, but also to keeping the right tone. The length being just above the shoulders is relatively manageable, and I think the subtle change in color towards the face adds a freshness that keeps the entire look from being too harsh. This is one of those haircuts that really shows off the synergy in a color and cut.

Stylish Textured Lob with Face-Framing Layers

#13 Stylish Textured Lob with Face-Framing Layers

These layers are doing amazing things! They give some structure around the cheekbones and don’t weigh the whole cut down or feel too done. The light mid-length highlights are so subtle but give the hair a sense of movement, even pre-styling. This is sure to suit medium density hair as you achieve fullness without the bulk. And I will say this, the tousled finish is truly easy to achieve at home, which isn’t something I can say about every textured lob I see. You’re almost there with a quick scrunch.

Soft Textured Mid-Length Cut with Subtle Waves

#14 Soft Textured Mid-Length Cut with Subtle Waves

The warm golden highlights are beautiful against the skin, and the glow adds to the overall healthy and lively look. This glow illustrates certainly one of the many positive effects color can have that is often overlooked. The waves are relaxed and organic, nothing too rigid, the layering gives them the space to shift without collapsing. For fine hair, achieving that kind of volume without a whole bunch of product is a win. You may want a sea salt spray to help with the wave formation, but aside from that, this is a pretty chill look to maintain.

Chic Textured Bob with Soft Fringes

#15 Chic Textured Bob with Soft Fringes

The bangs on this bob are perfectly styled with ideal thickness. The cut feels personal as it is not overwhelming with bangs. I assume the goal is to look as natural as possible and this warm brown shade is very flattering and natural looking. The length is a bit longer than the chin which provides more versatillity as a bob and slight layering through the sides keeps it from looking like an a-frame box. This haircut is really easy and effortless. You can wash and dry it, and it will just behave.

Softly Layered Warm Chestnut Cut with Gentle Waves

#16 Softly Layered Warm Chestnut Cut with Gentle Waves

The mid-length chestnut cut looks good with the warm tones. Although the waves are imprecise, they create the impression that the hair is doing its thing perfectly. These soft highlights reflect the light well. The hair’s natural density is great as it works with the cut to provide body without being thick or heavy. You should try curl cream if you like the waves, but you can leave it like this.

Chic Textured Lob with Soft Waves

#17 Chic Textured Lob with Soft Waves

This look is a chin-length soft wavy bob with light layers added for movement. This stylish bob length is versatile for all occasions and, on finer textured hair, this cut adds weight without being heavy, which is a nice balance. I would say this is more reliable than flashy and that is a true positive. For this style, I’m guessing that the waves will need to be ironed in for more definition, although a lot of the work is done because of the way the hair has been cut.

Choppy Silver Shag with Face-Framing Layers

#18 Choppy Silver Shag with Face-Framing Layers

The shape on this one is nice! The choppiness adds an energy to the silver cuts that is usually lacking, and the longer back layers create a silhouette that prevents it from looking like a plain short cut from the back. The front face framing layers soften it in a way that feels more natural than more constructed. If you’re allowing your natural silver to come through and want a cut that feels intentional about it, this is worth a chat. The choppy texture will and regular trims will maintain the look of done rather than grown out.

Charming Textured Mid-Length Cut with Soft Waves

#19 Charming Textured Mid-Length Cut with Soft Waves

I think this hairstyle will translate well in photos because of its messy and disheveled texture that gives an effortless, lived-in appearance. The layers of the cut provide volume as well as even redistribution and added movement to the hair. The waves create a nice soft, polished appearance. This is a versatile length, meaning you can style it in many different ways. However, if you prefer not to style it, it will look great as is. The cut will complement your hair’s natural waves nicely, even if your hair has a bit of a wave. In the long run, this is going to save you time and effort.

Modern Textured Bob with Soft Waves

#20 Modern Textured Bob with Soft Waves

I value Bob’s style. It is very relaxed, while the waves are effortless, the layers are spot on so that the hair doesn’t feel too flat. The length sitting just above the shoulders feels young but doesn’t feel like too much of a commitment. The texture is used here to create that appearance of more volume, which adds to the illusion. It’s a pretty low maintenance cut, but it will require regular trims so it doesn’t lose that intentional look.

Textured Copper Pixie with Soft Layers

#21 Textured Copper Pixie with Soft Layers

A copper color pixie cut is a style that (for better or worse) will draw a very specific kind of attention. However, when paired with warm tones of copper, the skin gives an instant glow to the person wearing it. Additionally, subtle layering provides the perfect amount of dimension to create a more textured feel to the haircut. There is minimal effort needed when it comes to the style of the cut itself. However, color upkeep will be necessary in order to maintain the brightness. Because of this, the warm copper color is much more approachable than the darker shades and therefore makes it a better fit on some people than others.

Sleek Chocolate Bob with Subtle Layers

#22 Sleek Chocolate Bob with Subtle Layers

The cut is really well done. The chocolate tone is a rich glossy and the texture with the shine is perfect. The layers are just enough to not make the cut look flat, and the length remaining just below the jawline pulls it all together. I actually find it pretty interesting that the dark color that encircles the face makes it look bright. And even though it’s a little counterintuitive, the contrast works here. It’s an elegant style that would take you from the office to after hours without any adjustments.

Softly Layered Warm Chestnut Cut with Subtle Highlights

#23 Softly Layered Warm Chestnut Cut with Subtle Highlights

This one has some excellent placement of highlights. There are some more that are placed around the face and mid-lengths that catch the most light and give the cut an overall warmth that feels intentional but not overdone. The face framing layers are soft enough to move when you move and they pull the focus up to the eyes in a very flattering way. The mid-length works well here because it gives the layers room to do their thing. On fine to medium hair, this kind of highlighting can really change how full the hair looks without adding any actual weight.

Softly Textured Gray Bob with Fringed Bangs

#24 Softly Textured Gray Bob with Fringed Bangs

With a touch of personality, this gray bob is complimented by distinctive bangs that others of its kind do not have. Playfully contrasting the seriousness of gray, the bangs are light enough to not weigh down the forehead. The gloss in the hair suggests good condition, and healthy gray hair has a luminosity that is unique. The layers in the bob make movement possible. If you’re embracing your gray, a style like this one, full of texture and variation, makes the transition feel more like an upgrade rather than a compromise.

Textured Ash Gray Pixie with Soft Volume

#25 Textured Ash Gray Pixie with Soft Volume

What makes this pixie unique is the volume at the crown. It provides height and width that is flattering to most face shapes, and the ashy grey colour has a coolness that is very modern. The grey ashy colour is modern and the height and width created by the layering technique is movement that you don’t see often in pixie, which tend to sit flat or go overly spiky. This one threads the needle between the two really well. It’s a clean easy style day to day but those intention will lose their layers after about five or six weeks, so keep your trim schedule consistent.

Chic Soft Rose Gold Layered Bob

#26 Chic Soft Rose Gold Layered Bob

If you prefer a softer, more delicate approach to rosy hues, a pastel option like this is better than a more vivid fashion shade. With rosy toned hair dyes, the color will gradually change and shift throughout the months, so you’ll need to plan for more regular appointments. The scissors elevate this one and give it individuality, while the bangs frame the hair nicely without closing off the face. On medium-density hair, this length and shape feel balanced and manageable. In this style, the most important consideration is the rose gold and of course how it fades. If it fades too quickly to enjoy the color then that is something you’ll have to put up with between maintenance appointments.

Softly Layered Ash Blonde Cut with Face-Framing Highlights

#27 Softly Layered Ash Blonde Cut with Face-Framing Highlights

The face-framing highlights that catch the light around the eyes and cheekbones are absolutely on point. Also a good choice are the ash blonde highlights as they avoid looking overly warm/yellow and create a nice tonal balance. The layers blend nicely into the texture of the hair which helps create that effortless movement. That kind of seamless layering on fine to medium hair is a game changer. It’s a low maintenance polished cut. However, keeping an ash tone will require regular toning to keep any unwanted warmth at bay.

Textured Copper Pixie with Soft Volume

#28 Textured Copper Pixie with Soft Volume

This copper pixie expresses another approach to volume distribution. There is added height at the top which creates a unique overall proportion and the texture feels softer. It’s very face flattering and looks great with natural waves or curls. This added versatility is not something all pixies offer. The copper colour is warm and vibrant. If this kind of tone appeals to you, make sure to include touch-up appointments into your routine so you don’t get left with any fading. A couple more brighter pieces through the top would give even more dimension to this look.

Warm Chestnut Bob with Soft Textured Ends

#29 Warm Chestnut Bob with Soft Textured Ends

This bob is super easy to wear. The colour is a natural, warm, chestnut. The textured ends give just the right amount of personality to keep it out of the boring zone. Shoulder length is generous and beautifully frames softer features. In the fine to medium hair range, soft layers give the fullness illusion without the need for a lot of styling – a round brush and a blow dry is all it takes. It’s the sort of cut that every day quietly goes to work and sometimes that’s exactly what you want from your hair.
