Here’s a little known fact about graduated bobs. They are the absolute best haircut for women over sixty. I mean that in the best way possible. I’ve had people sit in my chair and say they \” HAVE \” to grow out their hair to look younger. I say, \” Uh-uh, just watch.\” Because a graduated bob is one of the very few haircuts that create volume at the back of the head and crown, which is exactly where a lot of volume is needed. It also allows you to keep the hair around your face a little more soft, relaxed and modern.
Last year I had the sweetest client. She had been rocking the same long layers as far back as 2005. She was SO nervous about going shorter. We did a graduated bob and I’m not exaggerating, she cried. She cried because she was so happy about the haircut and said, \” Where has THIS haircut been.\” That is a huge reason why I love this job so much. The graduated bob truly changes your hair, your face and your whole mindset. I want to show you all the different ways you can do them. I’ve put together 30 of my absolute favorite styles for women over 60 and honestly, I can’t pick a favorite.

#1: That Perfect Silvery Bob That Makes You Look Like You Summer in the South of France
Let’s appreciate how BEAUTIFUL this is. These layers are so soft and sit on the face in a lifting and brightening way. The hair sweeps to the shoulders and gives you the option to tuck it behind the ears and just let it swing and do its own thing. That is the beauty of the moving layers. If your hair is fine, it will help give the shape a fluffy, soft, and tender look without falling flat. You will have to come and see me to keep the trims regular to keep the magic going, but it’s worth it.

#2 The “I Woke Up Like This” Silver Bob That Actually Requires Very Little Effort
I want to point at your hair and say huge look at this! Huge! It has great texture, and the layers may seem slight but from my experience they do wonders to bring body and movement to finer hair. The ends look just wispy enough! I hate bobs that look like helmets and I think that is the worst thing you can do, so I really appreciate how light the ends of this bob are. The color is that lovely natural silver that women seem to think they have to fight. A style this chic and easy to manage looks best with a bit of simple consistency, and I’d recommend purple shampoo to keep the tones bright rather than yellow!

#3 When Your Silver Bob Has That Little Bit of Collarbone Action Going On
While her main job is cutting hair, she also designs and creates. This bob is longer, but at length hitting just at the collarbone, it gives such an elegant vibe (without the long hair assumption). The added face-framing layers are doing such amazing work. They are really drawing attention to the cheekbones, which is exactly what we want. If your hair is fine to medium, this length can sometimes be tricky because it can go limp on you, so I’d suggest keeping a good volumizing mousse in your rotation. And when this is styled, wow? This cut is the type of cut that will have people asking ‘who does your hair?’.

#4 The Silver Bob with Highlights That Make Your Face Light Up
I really love the face framing highlights. They really do brighten up the area around the eyes and cheekbones and give a more subtle effect. It’s not a full highlight, but is more strategically placed. The collarbone length with those soft layers gives you movement without going too short too fast if that’s what you’re nervous about. The layering here is also really smart because it gives you volume throughout the mid-lengths where women over 60 tend to lose it first. This is one of those cuts I’d recommend to literally anyone who walked into my salon wanting a change.

#5 The Layered Silver Bob That Looks Expensive Without Trying
Some haircuts have an unparalleled elegance that makes them look expensive; you can picture the kind of person who would wear a bob hairstyle; they probably own a fancy car and have strong opinions on olive oil. This hairstyle has layers. This is the type of style that brings a certain type of hair to about twice the volume, and creates that indescribable texture and movement. The length of the hair is above the shoulders, and this perfect length of “not too long and not too short” is stunning. I also love the soft and sophisticated gray tones. It will be important to keep your layers looking fresh, so come in for a trim every six weeks. When those layers grow out too much, the hair will start to look more casual than expensive.

#6 A Blunt Bob That Actually Has Some Personality
I’m going to be completely honest, blunt bobs can be super boring, and I often find myself getting tired of them. But with this one, there are subtle layers that break up that chunky block look. These chin length layers are really flattering to the face and the soft blonde highlights add a ton of dimension and shine to her hair. If you have naturally straight hair, this look will be easy to maintain because your hair will do the styling for you. You’ll need to come in to get the blunt edges done if you want to keep it clean. The blunt cut does tie everything together, so don’t skip your trim!

#7 This Caramel Bob That Gives Me All the Warm Fuzzy Feelings
This color is truly amazing. The warm caramel is perfect with the skin tone and softens the entire look. The soft gentle waves are very patio brunch vibes which is energy we should all be living. The waves are very gentle and soft. A big barrel curling iron and 2 minutes are all you need to do this. The length is very nice and will suit you perfectly especially if you have an oval or heart shaped face. This length is ideal for highlighting your cheekbones.

#8 The Classic Silver Bob That Just Never Misses
I would classify this as a “workhorse” hairstyle and that is a good thing. It is classic and clean, and goes with almost anything. The subtle framing layers keep it soft, and eliminate a boring haircut. The polished look is due to the length being at the chin, and the ends being lighter makes it move more. I have done numerous bobs with this style and it is a style that does not disappoint. This style suits fine to medium hair, as it is not too much, and will not weigh it down. Regular trims will be required as split ends will make the shape fall apart.

#9 The Silver Bob That Moves Like It Has Somewhere to Be
I love haircuts done naturally like this one, you can just tell how awesome it will look when the wind blows. The texture in the hair is awesome because it’s adding dimension without being overboard, which is a fine line to walk. This can frame your face nicely if you have an oval or heart shaped face. Let’s be real, to get this look you will probably need a decent texturising spray because that look is going to need some support from fine hair to hold it. Once you set your routine, this will be a cut and run in 10 minutes.

#10 The Jawline Bob with Layers That Actually DO Something
Have you had a bob and noticed some layers were not visible? In this case, there is no reason to worry. The layers are doing their job in creating volume, depth, and texture definition that looks great. The bob length hits at the jaw and is my favorite length as it draws the eye upwards. There is a hidden balayage that minimizes upkeep and maximizes depth which is the winning combo. The waves, if present and natural to your hair, are going to look great as this style will accentuate the shape.

#11 That Chin-Length Caramel Bob That’s Secretly Elegant
This cut looks super clean and well done. I can totally picture a woman with a very organized spice rack wearing this style. It’s chin length and I really like the contrast of the clean cut ends with the softer highlights. If you have wavy/slightly curly hair, this will be a great length because it looks soft without you having to do any extra work. The caramel highlights really suit your skin tone and are a nice touch. If your hair is on the finer side, I’m going to give you a little bit of a warning – you will need to keep up with your trims because once you start getting split ends, it will really take away from the overall look of the cut.

#12 A Rich Brown Bob That’s Giving Quiet Confidence
I love this one because it gets the balance right for a great haircut, not trying too hard, but also not being plain. The bob is just below the jaw and has soft layers to add movement and keep the look from being blocky. The rich brown with soft highlights is excellent for the complexion and brightens things up without being too much. This will be gorgeous on heart-shaped faces. The upkeep for this style is also really easy; as long as you get regular trims to hold the shape, you will be good to go.

#13 The Side-Swept Blunt Bob That Looks More Expensive Than It Is
This is one of those cuts that lets the simplicity shine, and I am SO HERE for it. The blunt ends give it a clean and modern look and the soft layers around the front add the right kind of movement so it won’t look rigid or boxy. Bob cuts like this are chin length and are super flattering as they help to showcase the neck and jawline. I particularly love this cut for hair that is straight to slightly wavy as it looks the most clean when the hair is working with gravity. The most important thing is to keep those edges sharp! If you want this cut, get ready to book those stylist appointments.

#14 A Dark Chocolate Bob with the Most Gorgeous Texture
Let’s take the time to appreciate this color, the rich dark chocolate is doing beautiful things for the skin tone. The jawline length is clean and structured but those subtle layers stop it from feeling too heavy or boxy, which is always the risk with shorter cuts in darker colors. For hair that is fine to medium this will give you a lovely sense of volume throughout the layers especially if you blow dry it with a round brush. What I love the most about this is how modern but not overly trendy it is. In two years it will still look good, but it will never look dated.

#15 The Brown Bob with Highlights That Know Exactly What They’re Doing
Each highlight is well thought out and deserves an applaud. They are put in to create depth and dimension where the layers are so it forms a cohesive look Instead of two different things going on in one head. The jawline length is super flattering, especially for oval faces. The cut gives the illusion of volume which is the holy grail to those with fine hair. The lived in texture is lovely. It’s so much better than an overdone blowout. It’s very modern and fresh. Just stay on top of the trims and it will look great.

#16 Silver Waves That Make Me Want to Throw Away My Flat Iron
I love this so much! The soft waves and silver color are perfect. The face framing is also very nice. The waves add a beautiful softness to the look and make it warm and approachable. This style would be so good for you if you have a round face because the waves will elongate your face. For my naturally wavy girls, this will be super easy for you. Just wash your hair, add some styling cream, and scrunch. For my straight haired girls; this will still be achievable, it just means you’ll need to spend a little time curling your hair to get the waves.

#17 An Ash Brown Bob That’s Giving Effortless Cool Girl
Ash brown shades are sleek, modern, and nice. It all comes together nicely with this cut. The cut is above the shoulder and soft layers provide a quality of airiness especially with finer hair. When your hair is this length it can seem overdone, but here it looks great. The texture in this hair is what separates a great bob from a good bob. If you have a round or oval face, this will beautifully trim the face. With layered cuts it usually looks like effort was put in, but with trims that’s not the case.

#18 A Chin-Length Silver Bob with Layers That Know Their Assignment
The best layers are the ones that are undetectable, yet they enhance the hair in some way that is hard to describe. That’s what’s going on here. The chin-length (cut) is fantastic, and the face-framing layers are really softening and quite complimentary. This is a great choice if you want something shorter but are not quite ready for a full-on pixie, because it still feels like you have some length to work with. This haircut is best suited for fine to medium hair as it does not require a lot of product to give the body that many other haircuts need. On days when your hair is looking a little lifeless, defining cream can be a great option, but on most days you probably won’t need it.

#19 An Elegant Gray Bob That Feels Like a Breath of Fresh Air
There are many things I love with this style including the nice jawline it comes to, the nice layers, the grey color of the cut, and how it all comes together without being too stuffy. This style looks best with straight hair, but don’t be afraid to change it up on the weekends. I think this would suit a heart shaped face as the length and layers are concentrated to make a nice frame around the chin. The cut is quite low maintenance, which is a good thing.

#20 The Blunt Bob with Face-Framing Layers That Softens EVERYTHING
One of my favorite hairstyles is a blunt bob. The clean bottom line is very modern and chic. The face-framing soft layers also soften the whole look and create the best of both worlds. Another great thing about this shoulder-length cut is how versatile it is, and it is incredibly flattering on just about any face shape. The blunt cut is also great for finer hair because it really helps to create the illusion of thickness due to the density from layers not being lost. I like how soft and natural the texture looks and would not want it overdone. I would recommend a good volumizing spray for those days when fine hair wants to go flat, but this cut does a lot of the work for you.

#21 Oh My GOD This Copper Bob Is Everything
I really like the copper color on this! It is so pretty! And paired with the stacked back that adds volume? Ugh, SO good! The rounded shape is so flattering, it adds fullness right where it is needed, at the crown and sides which helps to lift your whole face. The color adds so much warmth that with the length being medium and practical, it is going to look phenomenal on a range of skin tones. The stacked back is going to blow your mind because it adds volume and is perfect for fine hair. The look you will achieve with the stacked back is going to be great and instead of having to blow dry it to achieve the same look, you’ll save yourself the time! This look is SO worth the maintenance that regular trims will require!

#22 A Textured Gray Bob with Waves That Look Like They Happened by Accident (But Didn’t)
People want hair that embodies the *’Did she or didn’t she style it?’* vibe. Such a look is easy, youthful, and relaxed. Gray hair is particularly pretty and should never be covered. Soft waves work best with fine and medium hair. We are getting real here — if your hair is naturally straight, achieving this will take some effort. You might need to use a curling iron or do some overnight braids. If you have natural texture, this will be a snap.

#23 Warm Auburn Layers That Are Making Me Want to Change MY Hair Color
What colors make you feel really warm? Auburn is one of them, and it is so multi-dimensional! It is elevating this layered bob to the next level. The soft, framing, and stunning layers are also giving the style more movement, especially with the color. My ideal length for bobs is just above the shoulders. It gives the benefit of a short style with enough length to pull the hair up, creating more looks. This style will especially flatter those with round or oval shapes since the cheek area will be nicely framed with the layers. This color will not stay vibrant for a long time, so more frequent touch-up appointments will be needed. In between appointments, it will be lovely auburn as this color fades nicely.

#24 Ash Blonde Layers That Are Quietly Gorgeous
Haircuts don’t always need to be bold or loud. They can be more subtle, but still, look great. This haircut is a great example of that. The ashy blonde color is beautiful and classy. The layering is done well. The layering is great because it helps create softness and movement around the face without losing volume on top. For fine hair, this haircut is phenomenal. There are specific haircuts made for fine hair, and it’s nice to see this one in action. An ashy blonde color is going to require more maintenance than other colors. Ashy blonde colors can go warm and brassy easily, so it’s best to keep purple shampoo and a toner handy. With all that maintenance, this color is definitely worth it.

#25 Soft Waves and Chocolate Tones That Are Giving Me Life
Layered bobs look amazing on every single person – not just this creator! This hair cut is shoulder length, meaning that it is universally flattering. The layers are kept under control, and the rich chocolate undertones compliment the, I presume, the models skin. The modern waves are what make the haircut so current for 2024, as the waves look so natural and “not done”, which is the opposite of how styles looked back in the 80s and 90s. The haircut is also perfect for framing oval and heart-shaped faces, which is what makes this haircut so great for those face shapes. To get these waves without the fuss of an iron, just do one quick turn of the hair round the iron barrel and voila, it will look perfect!

#26 A Sleek Silver Bob That Means Business (the Fun Kind)
This looks so polished and I feel like the layers are perfect. They add just the right amount of softness so that it doesn’t get too ‘severe’ with the look. The length just below the chin is SO flattering for the jawline, and it pretty much elongates everything and gives a really clean silhouette that I absolutely LOVE on women over the age of 60. The layers give you that soft movement, so it is not just your hair sitting there, it is hair that is DOING something. This is really smart cut if your hair is fine to medium because it keeps enough weight at the bottom to look full while the layers on top create a bit of texture. All you need to finish this off beautifully is a little bit of styling cream worked through it with your fingers.

#27 Highlights That Actually Look Natural (and a Really Cute Bob)
Today we’re admiring the highlights, which the stylist deserves a raise for. Highlights are not easy to do. They are layered and dimensional, without looking stripey or chunky. The above the shoulder length gives off a youthful vibe. The texture is polished and messy in the right amounts. The face-framing layers are just right, and the effect is just good hair that looks like it grew like that. To keep the dimension in the highlights, some color touch ups are necessary, but the cut is low maintenance. Overall, the hair is fantastic

#28 A Brown Bob That Does a Lot with a Little
I love a good haircut and it feels nice to change it up! Not having to do a bunch of styling to make it look good is awesome. The chin-length cut with clean ears looks really nice with the layers giving some bounce and body to it. I just like it because it is trimmed nicely and not over styled. I think cuts like this look best on medium to fine hair because it gives more volume and shape compared to just using hair products. If that nice bouncy look is what you are going for, using a light scrunch of mouse on damp hair before blow drying is a good method for that. I think the natural brown color of the hair is good too. The cut, color, and maintenance looks like there was a good balance of effort put in to it.

#29 A Textured Bob with Layers That Play Well with Everything
The best thing I can say about this haircut is that this one has the most versatility, which is especially difficult to do with a haircut like this. The soft layers really frame the face beautifully, and the added subtle highlights do wonders for her texture and depth that a solid, flat, bob would be significantly less interesting. What I really love is how flexible this is. It can be adjusted for a very polished look by just styling it and making it sleek and straight. However, on the contrary, you can add some texture to it, and it would suit that laid back weekend look just as easily. This cut is going to look especially good on oval and heart shapes. Because the layers and shape are the key elements that make this haircut work, I strongly recommend you come back to the salon before it gets too long, because you will need to make some regular appointments for trims to keep everything in the right place.

#30 This Copper Stacked Bob Is Going to Make You Want to Be a Redhead
Copper tones and this stacked bob? Vibes are immaculate! The back stacking gives a wonderful volume that a typical bob does not have, and the copper tones with highlights makes the color even more rich. The length being just above the shoulder is perfect to show off the stacked layers while still leaving some length. It’s perfect for fine to medium hair since you’ll have plenty of volume without too much effort. Realistically, copper tones are not going to last, and you’ll notice fading a lot more compared to other tones. So you’ll definitely want a color-depositing conditioner to keep the color looking fresh! But let’s be honest, with a color this good, it’s definitely worth it!
