While cleaning my paintbrushes, I happened to stop on a French film from the sixties. One of the actresses had amazing hair. It looked short, soft, a little messy, but like it was put together on purpose. People often misunderstand the French bob. It looks like little to no effort was put into it, but actually, it takes a lot of time, effort, skill and a lot of thought from the hairdresser who did it. Each angle and layer is done for a specific reason.
Some even think it looks better on older women. This is true to an extent. Older hair is softer and is often the right structure to pull it off. Most of the time, older people have the right bone structure to pull off a French bob, especially if they have nice hair. One of my clients was about 73, and she had hair that was long, unstyled, and pulled back for about 15 years. I was able to convince her to get a French bob, and when I turned her around it was literally a shocking transformation. I really enjoy doing French bobs. I have done about 27 of them, and each one has its own unique quality.

An angled bob is always a cut that looks good in real life and in pictures, and this is a perfect example. The layers are so subtle that it may look like there are hardly any layers, but once the hair starts to move around, you can see how much the layers are doing. For me, what I admire the most about this cut is that she looks like her hair and that is the aim. It sure does take more maintenance between cuts for the curly hair, but for the texture it is worth it every single time.

The textured bob, silver in color, has a fresh feel that could easily be mistaken for a 2024 haircut, rather than a style from ten years ago. The variation in the layers provides enough dimension, while the above shoulder length is in that universally flattering zone that just works. Silver and gray hair looks its best when the cut is textured, which helps to eliminate the flat look that could happen with lighter colors. The round brush blowout is likely what is seen here, with ends flipped under a bit. That takes no more than 15 minutes, and you wouldn’t guess it’s that quick, because it looks like you spent a lot longer.

I would have to say that this is my favourite bob in the collection. I love the personality it has! The ends are nice and wisipy, and the volume at the tope creates a good contrast, and the flattering jawline length on rounder face shapes is something that longer bobs don’t achieve. Fine hair is ideal here because it creates that airy, lived-in look that thick hair just isn’t able to achieve. If you have fine hair and have been told you can’t go short, you need to show these people this picture!

This cut definitely has a uniqueness that I don’t think I will forget; it’s like how the waves shape the face and how the layers create a movement that feels almost like a dance. I believe that a chin length cut is a great styling choice because it allows the waves to really show off and not get weighted down by too much length. The gray shade is also multi tonal which gives more dimension that being a single toned gray lacks, and the average density captures the right amount of hair to work with without being too heavy which is ideal for waves. If you want to create waves at home like this, it will take you most of the way there to use a cream that enhances curls on damp hair, and just scrunch it and let it air dry.
