If you want your hair to look voluminous, shaped, and beautiful, then you may want to consider a flipped haircut. Flipped haircuts not only change your appearance, but they also look very chic with stylish designs and flipped ends. Don’t worry about your hair length either! Flipped haircuts are versatile and look great on short, medium, and long hair. There is a flipped haircut for every individual personality which is why this article will showcase flipped haircuts in order to help you find the most flattering option.
Hair flips as a hairstyle may seem out of date, but they can make people look extremely good. One of my clients years ago came in with an unclear description stating that she wanted something with movement, but she wanted to avoid anything that looked like beachy waves. I decided to do a layered look with delicate ends flip, and I finished it off with a rounded blow dry. When she turned to look at the mirror, she gasped and exclaimed, “Oh, that’s what I’ve been trying to describe for 3 years! ” This is an example of the magic of hair flips and how people are unable to put that style into words when asking for a haircut. Hair flips not only add instant volume to the ends of your hair, but that hair also look thicker and it gives a beautiful defined shape.
What I really like about flipped cuts is how versatile they are. You can wear the same basic cut one way for a polished and put together look and then flip it a different way for an more fun and edgy look using a round brush. They work for so many different lengths and hair types, and are super easy to maintain because they’re not based on passing trends, they are rooted in structure. I keep recommending cuts like this for my clients because I think they look really nice as they age and they tend to want to look like they’ve put in a lot of effort, without all the effort, which, let’s be honest, is most of us.

#1: Warm Beige Sculpted Volume Flip
Some of your best cuts, They look even better in real life. The style is made with volume, and so you won’t have to spend every morning battling to get your hair to work with you. That warm beige tone is luxurious, like your hair chose to be that color. All you need is a round brush, a little bit of patience, and a blowout. This cut will be particularly nice to finer hair.

#2: Classic Chestnut Flip-Under Bob
I always enjoy a clean flip-under bob. It’s success over the years is very justified. It’s simple, flattering, and it’s hard to go wrong with it. The depth chestnut color in the hair keeps it from looking too prim and the chestnut hue creates a beautiful contrast with the skin and frames the jaw wonderfully. I understand that many people find the idea of going shorter very concerning, and with that in mind, I would place you in this style first.

#3 Layered Cut with Soft Pieces Around the Face
This style has many layers. The layers aren’t meant to sit stiffly, but to move with you. That’s what sets good layering apart from bad layering; it isn’t just some random chop with a razor. The warm brunette tones add visual weight even though the cut is light and airy. If you have fine hair and have been burned by layers before, this is the one that actually works because the face framing is deliberate and not random.

#4 Textured Lob with a Bit of Wave
If my clients want something more contemporary but aren’t quite ready for a full bob, I typically suggest this length. This particular style grazes the shoulders, allowing for a pulled back option while also looking nice straight down. Your hair has any natural movement at all, you’re already halfway there. Your hair has any natural movement at all, you’re already halfway there. All you’ll need is a little bit of texturizing spray on damp hair, scrunch it a bit and you’re ready!

#5 Long Layers with Easy, Natural Movement
If you’re saying “I don’t want to lose any length” this is the cut for you. The internal layers are long so nothing looks chopped or stepped, just beautiful gradual movement that starts around the collarbone and builds from there. It’s one of those cuts that looks like you didn’t do anything, and that is the point. If your hair is really thick, you may require some periodic weight removal so it doesn’t feel heavy, but on medium density hair this will pretty much style itself.

#6 Soft Brunette Layers with Gentle Movement
The layers are subtle enough that you might not see them until the hair moves, which is a sign of a good cut. The length is mid-length, which is universally workable. It sits on the face in a relaxed way, without looking like an accident. If your hair has any natural waves, those layers will pick it up and run with it. If not, it will be just like a large barrel curling iron for about five minutes.

#7 Clean Bob with Soft Framing Layers
I appreciate a blunt bob that’s not completely blunt, and this is exactly that. The line is clean and definitive, but the slight face-framing pieces soften it just enough that it doesn’t look too harsh. This shape, especially on fine hair, give you dimension without everything looking flat and one-dimensional. It might be a bit more maintenance, but it’s a small price to pay for a look that’s really put together with low effort. You’ll need honest trims every six weeks to keep that line.

#8 Long Layers with Flipped Ends and Body
The ends of the flap are doing something good here. They added enough lift at the bottom so the entire cut looks alive rather than just hanging. This is the sort of shape you get when the layers are cut with intention as opposed to being done randomly. For straight hair and medium density, this is pretty much a wash-and-go with a light blowout. The face framing is soft and doesn’t overwhelm, which is just the right amount of restraint this cut needs.

#9 Voluminous Layered Cut with Face-Framing Softness
I really like the confidence that this cut has. The layers are balanced just right, there is enough movement to keep things interesting, but not so much that it tips the scales too far. This works well with naturally voluminous hair because the layers enhance the body that is there instead of trying to create something out of nothing. A good volumizing blowout and you’re set.

#10 Curly Bob with Soft Layers
While having curly hair and a bob can lead to some unfortunate hairdos, this is not one of them! The layers are designed to complement the curl pattern to ensure that the volume builds in the right places. If you’ve been straightening your hair all the time, curly bobs are something to avoid. Straightened hair lacks the depth that naturally curly hair has, so if you’ve been straightening your hair, you should definitely think twice about that. A good curl cream and a diffuser will boost your curls and trust us, it will be worth the cost.

#11 Long Sleek Layers with Soft Flipped Ends
This style is very polished and finished very cleanly. It looks effortless (though I know look like this takes intention). The ends have some nice flipping that helps avoid a flat look. Also, the shoulder length gives you extra to play around with. The shine boost will be your best friend with straight, mid density hair like this. Finish it off with a light shine serum on the ends, and you’re good to go.

#12 Medium Length Flip with Gentle Layers
This style works really well with finer hair because the layers add fullness to the hair but not with out making the hair too thin. Once the cut is done the ends should naturally flip, which is the goal. The warm tone on this one is doing a lot visually, adding richness making the hair look thicker than what it is. To keep the hair lifted all day, use a volumizing mousse at the roots before blowdrying.

#13 Mid-Length Layers with Light Flipped Ends
This cut has been enhanced through texturing, and while there may seem like there is a lot of layering, this is just a tactical removal of weight in specific places to prevent the whole cut from being dragged down. The ends of this cut will be really easy to flip, and the style will be able to move without being stiff which will help the style be held out. This is the style that I would recommend to someone who wants to look like they put in a lot of effort but actually only wants to spend ten minutes on their hair because the cut does all the work for you.

#14 Copper Blunt Cut with Textured Ends
The color is my first priority as I know my clients will appreciate it. I hope you like getting your hair done because you are inevitably going to have to come back every four to five weeks to avoid a brassy or muddy look. That’s the commitment we’re talking about! The peace of mind to sit in my chair is all yours, and I’m sure the satisfaction will be worth it! The haircut will be simple; a blunt solid line with a textured finish, so it won’t look like a helmet. It will look so much fuller with the added color, especially with thin hair; this will be a pleasant bonus!

#15 Textured Bob with Flipped Layer Detail
This is a good length where you still obviously have a bob but you have enough to tuck behind your ears or pin half up if you want to. The flipped layers give nice personality to the style without looking like you are trying too hard and the subtle highlights are just in the right places to catch the light. This cut works particularly well with fine hair as the shape gives structure that finer textures sometimes struggle to create on their own.

#16 Mid-Length Flipped Layers in Rich Chocolate
The chocolate tone of the hair adds a warm and inviting depth to the cut in a way a neutral brown wouldn’t accomplish the same. The flipped layers provide just the right amount of motion to frame the face beautifully and the shape will look great even on day-two hair. I actually prefer how the hair looks not right after leaving the salon. I want all my clients to have a cut that ages well and this is one of those cuts.

#17 Softly Flipped Mid-Length with Understated Layers
This is one of those classic haircuts that feels so timeless, you might overlook just how ageless it is.
Most people don’t see how great a haircut is until they try to get the same cut, and ultimately fail, at a different salon. The layering is super minimal and intentional, and aims to foster that natural outward flip without the bulk, or disconnection. If you want to add some visual interest a soft balayage would work, aka without disrupting the clean shape, but honestly, the single tone is doing just fine on its own.

#18 Medium Length Flipped Layers with High Shine
There are many hairstyles that can only be done on thick straight hair, and this style takes full advantage of those possibilities. The different layers will give your hair so much more movement and the ends will flip so it will never look like one big long thick curtain. That shine you are seeing in your hair is coming from healthy hair and healthy hair will always reflect light, this is not just from the product. If you have this kind of hair density, this style is going to look amazing without you needing to style it, Wednesday or Saturday.

#19 Textured Bob with a Clean Flip
The simplicity of this cut is what I like most. Besides being shoulder length, it just needs a soft flip, some light layers, and you’re good to go. It’s honest and refreshing. This will be one of the easiest cuts to maintain, provided your hair is straight to somewhat wavy. All it needs is a round brush blow dry to set the flip, and you’re good to go. The simplicity is the whole point.

#20 Warm Copper Mid-Length with Flipped Layers
What a great shade of copper! It is such a warm tone and one of the most flattering colors to put on hair. The flipped layers are soft enough to not fight for attention and the warmer tones pull your eye to the whole look. Instead of each element competing with each other, they harmonize. With this cut on fine to medium hair, you achieve the illusion of more volume than you actually have, which is a secret win. It makes me happy when a cut accomplishes that. The color will take some maintenance, but if you are going to put in the effort, this shade definitely pays off.

#21 Textured Mid-Length with Soft Face Framing
You get to keep a lot of style with this cut thanks to the natural wave. When a cut works with your texture you spend less time styling your hair and more time just enjoying it. The face framing layers aren’t super swoopy or dramatic or anything, but enough to draw focus toward the center of the face. You can tell this cut is the kind that looks like you just woke up like this (even if you didn’t).

#22 Mid-Length Flipped Cut with Gentle Volume
There is nothing jarring about this look – in fact, the serenity of this look is something I appreciate a lot. Everything is whispering for attention, the layers are soft, the flip is soft and the form is nice and easy. For fine to medium hair, I imagine it is very easy to achieve that desired volume without skid marking into the territory of overdone (which is fantastic to hear). The shine indicates a healthy head of hair, and the effort put into it will always outshine any stylistic choice.

#23 Wavy Bob with Bangs
These are perfect types of bangs to go with any new haircut! They are soft and slightly piece-y instead of thick and blunt so it helps keep the bangs from looking too structured. The wavy bob underneath has awesome texture that you can achieve with sea salt spray. Or perhaps with a wand? Either will do! To be honest, bangs are a lifestyle, you’re trimming them every three weeks or you’re pulling them back in anger, there’s no other option. But for those who actually do bother to get their bangs trimmed, this is a beautiful choice!

#24 Long Chocolate Layers with Soft Volume
I always recommend a rich chocolate color with face framing layers. It adds warmth to the complexion, and the layers give just the right amount of movement so the length doesn’t drag everything down. This shape is very forgiving and totally wearable on medium to thick hair. The upkeep for this look is reasonable too. You just need to get a trim every 8 weeks or so to keep the layers from growing out in a shapeless way, and then that is all!

#25 Soft Textured Lob with Gentle Waves
The softness of this lob is what I love the most. Nothing looks overly precise or perfect, and that’s what makes it great. The layers are cut to encourage a slight wave and some movement. Even on fine hair, this gives the illusion of more hair and it takes zero effort. It’s the kind of cut that looks fantastic just air dried, but it also looks even better with five minutes of blow drying, and that is right in the sweet spot.

#26 Long Layers with Subtle Face-Framing Movement
Depending on how thick the hair is, these types of long layers are about removing weight in a specific manner, allowing for free movement. The face-framing strands here are soft, just enough to soften it without giving that extremely specific “face frame” look that can age a haircut quickly. If your hair has a slight natural wave these layers are meant to evoke that in a really easy way. The hair looks gorgeous as a single process, though some subtle highlights would make it even more dimensional.

#27 Softly Flipped Mid-Length with Natural Volume
This is a great cut to finish with as it captures everything a flipped style should be, balanced, natural, and polished without being fussy. The mid density and healthy shine allow the cut to do the talking, and the soft flip at the ends brings some life and is low maintenance. If you want nice hair and little effort in the mornings, then this type of shape is what delivers.
