Feathered Shag Haircuts Are Bringing Fresh Energy to Everyday Hair

The feathered shag offers people the chance to be more forgiving with their longer hairstyles. Most haircuts, however, will have awkward stages where hair begins falling into place, and caps become the go-to accessory. With feathered shags though, hair actually gets better with growth due to shifting and texturing with the correct foundation. This means that even if you’re overdue for a trim, your hair will still look intentional.

A few years ago, one of my clients was a retired teacher in her mid sixties. She came in after seeing an old photo of herself from the late seventies. She had a feathered shag and thought it would be interesting to see what that feel would be, without looking like she was in costume. I found it very interesting that she didn’t say she wanted to look younger, she said she wanted to feel like herself again. And that is really the center of why this cut keeps circling back, especially for women over 60. It moves, it softens without all of the work, and it has a way of looking like it belongs to you rather than being something that was placed there. The feathered texture reflects light in a way that adds warmth to the face, and the layers give finer and thinning hair the ideal amount of body that doesn’t require a lot of product to hold it up. Below are examples demonstrating the range of this style.

#1: Long Brunette Farrah Shag

This is perhaps the most classically beautiful rendition of the feathered shag in this entire collection. Everything from the side-swept bangs to the outward kicking face-framing layers at the cheekbones to the long feathered lengths that still have movement at the very bottom, this comes together in a way that feels more timeless than trendy. The dark brown with understated warm tones is one of those shades that looks great in any light and on any skin tone, which is partially why it keeps coming back.

#2: Burgundy Velvet Feathered Glam

This shade of deep burgundy closely resembles a shade of crushed velvet. The curled out ends of the feathered layers also add a touch of glamour to the hair style, without going overboard. The curtain bangs do an excellent job framing her face, as they blend so well into the face-framing layers that it’s hard to tell where the bangs and the layers are. Good curtain bangs should behave like this. For the first fortnight following a fresh color application, this particular shade of burgundy will look its brightest. After the initial period, the shade settles into a slightly more muted tone than it was when it was bright, but it still remains equally beautiful.

#3: Deep Crimson Choppy Shag

The information provided has a lot of good details. It describes a disconnection in the layers of a haircut and contrasts the red of the hair with green eyes and lighter skin. It adds to the description of the cut with the red hair and how good of a tone the red hair is. It highlights the haircut and gives a good description of the crown layers. It states that there is some form of kick and supports the description of the cut by using the word frame which gives a good image of the hair and how it sits. There is a good use of image to describe the hair and give a feel of the hair and how good the combination is.

#4: Golden Honey Retro Feathered Bob

This haircut looks like it could’ve arrived straight from 1977 and somehow slipped right back into today’s world. The layered ends of the bangs feather back from the front and the crown has what looks like some blow-dry volume. The honey-blonde shade is naturally varied rather than uniform, which is a welcome change. The bangs are feathered and cut in an arc across the forehead and it all smoothly tapers at the nape. You could wear this with a vintage band T-shirt, or a smart top, and that is probably the reason why it has never quite disappeared.

#5: Copper Penny Feathered Shag with Full Bangs

The color copper really stands out here. The light reflects differently at each layer, creating an almost 3D effect with the feathering. The full bangs have a lot of volume without being too heavy, and they blend really well into the face-framing layers. This shade of copper is super flattering against her light skin and blue eyes. However, copper is known to fade pretty quickly, so you will want to invest in a color-safe shampoo for red shades.

#6: Cool Brunette Sculpted Shag

Seen from the side, the architecture of this well-cut shag can be appreciated. The crown has been cut super short to form that rounded shape up top, while the layers descend in graduated clean, feathered sections down through the nape. It looks sculpted, and the cool brunette color really clean lines of the cut and adds no distraction. This will grow out gracefully, which is something to consider before committing to a shape this defined.

#7: Dusty Rose Feathered Crop

The look of the dusty rose and brunette root combination on the shag is definitely my favorite pair. It is reminiscent of a sunset and the personality of the shag is really shown through the feathered layers and how they flip in different directions. I also love that with cuts like this, they really become unique to the person wearing it.

#8: Soft Ash Pixie Shag with Curled Nape

These small curls that flip at the nape are amazing. The cut is short and neat at the top and has bangs that are feathery and sweep across the forehead. The hair that is left longer at the bottom has just enough length to create a curl, which gives a really sweet vintage look. This type of shag especially creates the most hair illusion on fine hair, which is neat when the layering is correctly done.

#9: Icy Blonde Textured Lob Shag

The shag cut goes stunningly with the combination of platinum blonde hair and dark roots. The difference in light and dark hair color highlights each layer of the cut. The bangs are wispy and unstyled and the waves look a little bit frizzy which honestly adds to the overall look. Not every hairstyle has to look perfect to be good.

#10: Ash Brown Choppy Feathered Bob

I admire the precision of this cut! You can see from the side how each layer was sculpted to flip out and create that signature feathered silhouette that gives the bob shape and movement without losing its form. The ashy brown shade has a cool undertone so it doesn’t read too warm, and the bangs are the perfect density, thick enough to frame the forehead but thin enough to see through. This is a committed short cut that rewards someone who is ready for it!

#11: Sandy Blonde Undone Waves

I love the way the color transition looks so effortless! The dark roots fade into a sandy/ashy blonde which gives the feathered layers way more dimension than a single processed blonde would. The wispy bangs just barely touch the eyebrows and the whole vibe is that relaxed Californian hair that women say looks like they don’t try too hard. For anyone going this route, a purple shampoo will keep the blonde tones from getting too warm.

#12: Warm Brunette Wavy Shag with Curtain Bangs

We love the effortless vibe of this hairstyle! It features a natural split for curtain bangs, carefree waves, and beautifully shaped, feathered layers that don’t feel too mushroom-y. It even looks good right after you wake up, or three hours into your day. The best thing about a style like this is that it totally gets out of your way while also keeping you looking polished!

#13: Caramel-Kissed Layered Curtain Shag

A great job has been done with the highlights and the placement of the caramel pieces through the layered feathers, creating a brilliant, light-catching effect on each piece. The rounded full bangs provide a touch of vintage Hollywood glam, and the blowout with the soft turns at the ends is elegant but not too rigid. This look requires advanced styling skills. The use of a large barrel curling iron, a round brush, and some finishing products that were clearly not overlooked all contribute to the effect.

#14: Champagne Waves with Soft Volume

This is the kind of haircut that looks like it was styled using fingers and air – and that’s probably the case! The feathered layers on the top have a nice natural lift, and the fading blonde to cooler platinum is a nice touch. With hair this short, the wave patter does most of the work while the cut just lets it happen. I would wash this, add some lightweight mousse and leave it.

#15: Long Black Curly Shag with Blunt Bangs

I’m drawn towards the contrast of the straight and thick bangs and the feathered curls. The bangs hold that top section down while the feathers allow movement in the curls. With this darker hair color, the feathered technique might not be obvious, but it shows feathering by feel instead of by sight, which is a sign of a true master. The cut is incredibly well done.

#16: Curly Brunette Bob Shag with Side Fringe

I love how neat everything the style is. Everything stays close to the head without looking tight of constricted. The curls create an effortless volume, almost camouflaging the feathered layers until you see how beautifully the shape sits. The side fringe sweeping across the forehead is doing nice things for the proportions of her face. This would work beautifully on someone with naturally wavy or curly hair who doesn’t want to fight their texture every morning.

#17: Dark Brunette Tousled Soft Shag

I appreciate this version of a feathered shag being quieter. Not every style needs to be loud to be good. The layers and feathering are there, but the way it’s all done so softly sits so that the overall impression is of someone with really nice slightly messy hair. The dark brunette color is without highlights, which actually allows the texture to tell the whole story.

#18: Jet Black Textured Rock-and-Roll Shag

Some shags are shiny and neat and some shags look like they belong on a tour bus. This is the latter, and I mean that in the best way possible. The jet black color really brings out the texture and makes the feathered layers look almost sculptural. The added fullness through the bangs and crown area gives it that Stevie Nicks quality. There is no doubt that the natural wave pattern is doing about 90% of the styling work and that’s exactly how this cut should live.

#19: Electric Fuchsia Feathered Bob

This color really stands out. That bright fuchsia with what looks like a previously lightened base is eye-catching. It makes you want to stop scrolling. The feathered layers help the bob shape the bluntness and the choppy bangs look like they’ve grown out a bit suggesting that this style has been doing great for a few weeks now. Bright and vivid colors like this can easily fade with hot water so it’s recommended to wash hair with lukewarm water.

#20: Curly Dark Chocolate Micro-Bang Shag

Naturally curly hair + feather shag? Genius. My personal fave. The layers in the curls create such a unique look for each one, and the micro bangs really soften things up. They sit right on the forehead and provide a nice contrast to the strong curl pattern underneath. You can tell whoever did this really understood the importance of dry cutting for curly hair. The layers really do sit perfectly.

#21: Deep Violet Feathered Curtain

The cut is only secondary to the color saturation. Just look at the structure underneath! Those layers are doing real work. They are creating that cascading wave pattern that keeps the thickness of the hair from becoming one heavy mass. The deep violet has enough dark base showing through, it feels moody and dimensional rather than flat. This is one of those colors that needs a good color-depositing conditioner to keep the vibrancy up between appointments.

#22: Golden Pixie Shag with Textured Micro Bangs

The side flipping feathered bangs give this look an elusive energy. It hits that sweet spot between vintage and punk. The brassy under tones of the golden blonde color adds visual texture to the actual texture of this sassy shag cut. Seeing this style in person would definitely make you want to have it cut. A little texturizing spray would work wonders on this look.

#23: Brunette Curtain Shag with Long Wispy Tail

Most engaging here are the proportions, with heavy feathery bangs nearly grazing the eyes, an extremely short crown, and the thin wispy ends that go past the shoulders. It’s also one of the more committed takes on a feather shag, really leaning into the loved and un-loved mullet territory. The brunette colour keeps it from being too out-there and anchors all that wildness into something rich and natural. This cut will take confidence to wear and even more to upkeep. Those short layers will need trimming every 5 weeks or so to maintain that distinct shape.

#24: Lived-In Honey Shag with Fringe

This shag is for those who want an adventurous look. The bangs hit the brows and have a feathery, parted look. Mid-length shag haircuts always have an intentional rumpled quality, and here it’s no different. The warm honey end color looks like summer, even in February. Shags like this always look better in day-two hair, and this cut is no exception.

#25: Warm Chestnut Blowout Layers

This style is stunning and will look amazing in photos from any angle. I especially love the chestnut colour, it has a beautiful warmth and under lighting the feathering picks up some lovely copper hues. You can tell this has been blown out with a round brush and the stylist really understood how to achieve that natural flip at the ends. The retro vibe is perfection!
