25 Trendiest Feathered Haircuts for Women Over 70 with Fuller Faces

I had a wonderful consultation with a woman in her seventies who showed me a photo of herself from ten years ago and said, “I want to look like HER again.” I told her, “There is no reason why you can’t look like her.” I saw a difference in styling. Her previous stylist had given her some feathered layers that worked WITH her face. Over the years her style changed into a cut that was way too blunt and thick for her face. The minute I put some feathering back in, she started crying in my chair.

I think that when it comes to feathered haircuts, especially for women over 70 with rounder faces, there is a lot of untapped potential that I don’t think people are seeing. I have an idea that I think feathered hair cuts for older women are honestly the unsung heroes of achieving face symmetry without makeup. I also think there is a lot of wonder in the layered movement that happens when the hair is styled, it makes it look like the face is longer. It also draws attention to the eyes and cheekbones. They seem to get a lot of attention, and that’s why I love feathered looks. I’ve created a collection of 25 looks I love that feature feathers, and I have something to say about each and every one.

Elegant Feathered Layers with Soft Movement

#1: Those Shoulder-Skimming Feathered Layers That Just FLOAT

Okay, so HERE is just one of them hairstyles where you look in the mirror after you just got out of the salon and feel like you just transformed into someone completely different. The layers are cut right above the shoulders which means you can have optimum use of a ponytail without your hair dragging you down. The way the feathering brightens up the hair around the face is so soft and gorgeous. If your hair is finer and wavy then this is going to be YOUR hairstyle! The feathering gives the loose wave look that will give you the volume that you’ve always wanted. It might take a little bit longer to blow dry those layers with a round brush so that they flip the right way, but really, in the grand scheme of things, it really isn’t that big of a deal.

Textured Feathered Crop with Soft Volume

#2 That Chin-Length Feathered Crop That Looks Effortless

I feel the need to mention that not all chin length feathered crops are ideal for fuller faces. This one gives me ALL the feels! It’s so soft how the longer layers melt into the jawline. And she looks so effortless like she just rolled out of bed and that’s not true. Photos like this are sent to my clients who are looking for something low maintenance but want to look put together. With fine hair here, you get that lightness without having to thin anything out. And some dimension face framing highlights? Please do!

#3 Medium-Length Feathered Layers With That Effortless Wave

Magic is in the technique when it comes to this haircut, and this case, feathering is the most important. Do you notice how the different layers blend together, instead of looking choppy and stacked? That is what gives the illusion of thickness to the hair, without it being heavy. The subtle wave is just icing on the cake to create effortless movement. If you want your hair to look like this every day, be prepared to spend a few minutes with volumizing mousse and your diffuser. It is worth the time!

Chic Feathered Bob with Soft Layers

#4 The Feathered Bob That Frames Everything Perfectly

I’m a huge fan of the feathered bob! When the ends are cut to the jaw level like this, it really brings focus to the jaw which is exactly what I think the goal is. The highlights placed throughout the cut create wonderful dimension and almost make the hair look like it is glowing. This cut is ideal for fine hair as the feathering will stay nice and light and bouncy. The only thing I will say is that bobs around this length can start to look slightly shapeless. If you keep up with your trims, you should be fine!

Chic Soft Feathered Cut with Gentle Texture

#5 Playful Feathered Texture That Softens Everything

What I keep noticing is how much FUN this hair style is. It really has a life that many “age appropriate” styles don’t have which is something that I appreciate. The face framing wisps have that gentle, soft look that doesn’t require much and is effortless. It is fun and youthful and says “I have better things to do than spend 45 minutes on my hair.” Honestly same. For added texture and dimension, warm tones in the layers will really bring out those wisp pieces. Despite that, this cut looks great the way it is.

#6 Mid-Length Feathered Layers That Basically Style Themselves

My favorite type of hair cut is what I like to call a set it and forget it haircut. The hair cuts I consider to be set it and forget it as a compliment. The layers will be mid-length, which means it will be short enough to not wrestle with it every morning but long enough so you can feel feminine. If you have natural texture, this cut will LOVE you back. The feathering as the ends will work perfectly with whatever your hair wants to do. I have done this hair cut on so many of my clients who walk in wanting a low maintenance but polished cut and they all walk out smiling. As the ends of the hair cut begin to look purposefully messy, it will be necessary to do some cleaning, or in other words, trimming of the ends every six to eight weeks.

Soft Feathered Layers with Gentle Volume

#7 Feathered Layers With That Beautiful Lift at the Crown

The first thing I notice about this cut is the LIFT. The crown section is stunning, with loads of height and some face softening layering. The layering does a nice job for the fuller face because it helps with elongation. The mid-length is spot on because it adds movement without losing the volume you created on top. The body does take a tiny bit of styling effort, possibly a root lift spray and some dryer flipping the roots up. Once you get the hang of it, you can knock it out in minutes.

Soft Feathered Layers with Gentle Waves

#8 Cascading Feathered Waves That Frame Like a Dream

I really appreciate how the front diff sections cascade around the face. The front diff sections add a softness and romanticism to the look, while on fuller profiles the waves create beautifully sloping contours that slenderize the face. The model also has beautiful medium-length hair that has great texture, and honestly the feathering enhances and develops what is already there, which is always my preferred way of working. The crown layers provide some lift while the longer pieces around the face do the framing work. It looks really beautiful! I personally feel the waves may need some more definition, which could mean a quick pass of the curling iron on the front waves. Honestly, this is the kind of hairstyle that can look great on most days without having to be styled perfectly and can be a little messy.

Textured Feathered Layers with Soft Waves

#9 Medium-Length Textured Layers With Natural Movement

I think this haircut is special and valuable for fuller faces because the texture appears to break the face’s roundness without being too obvious. With medium length layers, hair is going to look wavy as if you ran your fingers through your hair and left, which is the goal we all know every stylist is after. Feathering gives some root lift which helps keep your hair from going flat. If you have fine hair, you will adore this look with a texturizing mousse scrunched in while your hair is damp.

Chic Layered Bob with Feathered Ends

#10 That Layered Bob With the Perfect Feathered Ends

I think it speaks volumes about a bob I can’t wait to recommend! The cut takes an ordinary bob to the next level with feathered ends. The movement of the feathered ends flip and soften the overall look which is great for rounder face shapes. The ends being feathered also make the cut feel lighter. If your hair is on the frizzier side, you’ll want to keep a smoothing serum handy for the ends, but other than that, it’s a low maintenance cut.

Textured Soft Waves with Feathered Layers

#11 Those Soft Feathered Waves That Hit Just Right

When looking at this hairstyle, the most important thing is the end of the layers. This is what makes it really good for fuller face shapes. These layers finish just above the shoulders, so they are moving and flipping right at the jawline which creates a lovely softening effect around the lower part of the face. A lot of work is done by the waves here, since the texture is just natural, and the layers give the waves space to fall. This is the type of haircut that requires a lot of maintenance because it will grow out and lose that wispy look quickly.

Chic Feathered Pixie with Subtle Texture

#12 A Feathered Pixie That Actually Has Some Attitude

Wondering if you should get a short haircut? Check out this feathered pixie! It shows how to do short hair when you have a fuller face without looking harsh or matronly. The feathering gives such nice texture and movement, and the warm brown color helps it feel soft and approachable, instead of too harsh. I love that the length is kept to about 2-4 inches because that’s long enough to have some play with it but short enough that your morning routine is basically “shake and go.” You’ll get the easiest daily styling of your life and honestly that trade off is a no brainer! You will need to see your stylist more often for shape up trims, probably every 4-5 weeks but in exchange you’re getting the easiest daily styling of your life and honestly that trade off is a no brainer.

Soft Feathered Lob with Gentle Layers

#13 A Feathered Lob That’s All About Subtle Softness

Lob hairstyles on fuller faces can either be very flattering or very unflattering; they can look boxy and sit on your shoulders like a box. The secret usually lies with the layering. The cut avoids that thanks to the gentle soft feathered layers that create movement and prevent the hair from looking like a straight curtain around the face. Interestingly, the low hair density works in your favour as it keeps the feathering looking light and airy, whereas with thicker hair, it usually works in the opposite direction. Overall, I would consider this a very reliable ‘everyday’ cut since it will look polished whether you blow dry it or whether you let it dry naturally.

Chic Feathered Curls with Soft Volume

#14 Feathered Curls in the Richest Red

I have to start with that COLOR, and the red on this jaw length cut is incredible! It is warm, and rich and enhances the dimensionality of the feathered layers. The cut is doing some great things as well. The bouncy curls offer volume to round out the face without closing it in. Her curls are cut so that they stack instead of poofing out at the sides, because that is a common concern when curly cuts are done on fuller faces. I recommend a light mousse to keep the definition and bounce in her curls between wash days.

Chic Feathered Lob with Soft Flare

#15 A Shoulder-Length Feathered Lob With Pretty Balayage

The balayage on this cut caught my eye first because it’s very subtle and natural, looking more like sun-kissed hair rather than highlights. And on a feathered cut? That’s exactly what you want because it draws attention to the movement created by the layers and helps amplify it. The shoulder length hits in a really flattering place and won’t drag down a fuller face. Also, the feathering throughout keeps everything modern and fresh and prevents it from feeling too heavy. I know my clients appreciate low maintenance cuts, and this style is super easy to air dry!

Textured Feathered Curls with Lively Volume

#16 Bouncy Feathered Curls With So Much Life

Feathered curls bring me absolute joy, and this style is the perfect demonstration of that! These curls have the youthful bounce and energy we love to see! Also, the feathered curls around the hair make soft and gentle pieces that frame the face beautifully! My favorite part about this cut is that the length is just above the shoulders, keeping the curls from getting too big and overwhelming for fuller face shapes. The layering is perfect. You get the volume right where you want it at the crown and through the mid lengths, but not too much at the sides! If your curls are prone to losing definition by day two, a curl refresher spray is going to become your new best friend!

Chic Feathered Textured Cut with Soft Volume

#17 Feathered Layers With Warmth and Movement

The special effect of the warm color of the cut makes the feathered layers glow. Almost as if each piece of the cut captures the light. This medium length style is ideal for fuller faces because it creates vertical lines which help to elongate the face. The layers help to reduce bulk around the cheeks. This style always wins the most compliments from my clients. With this style, people comment how great someone looks rather than mentioning someone just got a new haircut. This is a sign of a really good haircut – when it looks effortless, you don’t have to style it, and it stays looking good for days and days.

Chic Layered Feathered Cut with Soft Volume

#18 Classic Feathered Layers With a Fresh Feel

This feathered cut is a great example of a great cut that works for nearly all women who sit in my chair and say, “I want something different, but not TOO different.” I appreciate the compliment! The medium length and light feathering at the ends create the right amount of movement to keep things exciting. Most women want to focus around the cheekbone area and avoid the jawline for face framing, so the way this cut does that is very flattering for fuller faces. This style is versatile enough that you can wear it a ton of different ways depending on your mood, and on those lazy days you can literally just brush and go!

Chic Feathered Crop with Soft Volume

#19 A Feathered Crop With Volume That Won’t Quit

Feathered crops are really great styles that I love to show to my clients because short hair can really have some fun styles! I love the volume at the crown because it is really good with lifting the hair. The feathered ends at the sides help with the concern of having a boxy helmet look with shorter styles. If you want to go shorter, this is a great style to go with! It has a modern feel and isn’t pixie short. A warm balayage would be really pretty and would enhance the hair! Just some ideas for your next appointment!

Soft Feathered Layers with Gentle Movement

#20 Feathered Layers That Move Like They’re Dancing

Each part of this cut will be able to flip and sway in a different direction and with the angle of the feathery texture, it adds a really nice lightness around the face. The length of this cut is just below the shoulders. This cut works for almost everyone, but its particularly nice on fuller faces since it draws the eye down and gives an elongating effect. A good stylist will be able to make fine hair look fuller by placing the layers just right, and that’s what we have here. If you want to add a little dimension a subtle balayage would be nice here. Even in a solid color the cut will look good because there is a lot of action.

Chic Feathered Cut with Soft Volume

#21 A Fresh Feathered Cut With Effortless Movement

It looks nice and isn’t offensive or overdone in any way. It’s a nice cut that’s healthy and attractive, A shoulder cut with soft, gentle, feathered layers gives some movement and flow, but nothing too crazy especially with that natural texture. That lived-in look, in my opinion, is way better than a blowout. The face framing layers are important for fuller faces and create soft, sleek lines that slim and elongate. Plus, as long as you keep up with your trims, this cut will be low maintenance.

Chic Feathered Shag with Lively Volume

#22 A Feathered Shag That’s Giving Me LIFE

I think I might become obsessed with shag cuts. It’s wild how a shag can seem effortless and intentional at the same time. The layers, and fullness of the shag draw the eye upwards, which is excellent for fuller faces, because it adds volume around the face without pulling attention to the width. The layers also add movement to the hair, which is a large benefit in my eyes compared to standard layered cuts. A shoulder length shag is the perfect amount of hair to contain the volume around the crown and mid lengths and stop the hair from poofing at the sides. A shag can be high maintenance, and to achieve that effortless look it can take a little practice to create that look, but once you get the technique down, the shag will become very worth it.

Chic Feathered Crop with Volume and Texture

#23 A Short Feathered Crop With Crown Volume

If you have fine hair & struggle to get lift from longer styles, this cut is ideal for you! The short length ensures less weight is pulling the hair down and we have layered the crown to give you lasting lift that won’t deflate by lunchtime. If you have a fuller face, the side texture is important as it breaks up the shape & creates depth without adding too much width. This cut is so easy to style on a day to day basis. A little texturizing paste & your fingers is all you need!

Soft Feathered Cut with Gentle Body

#24 Soft Shoulder-Length Feathered Layers With Natural Body

Many haircuts look good, but this one stands out because of how natural it looks. The effortless feel of the shoulder length layers gives the haircut a more airy, less blunt look. Softness around the jaw and cheeks is flattering and in combination with fuller faces, this is a great look. This cut is a great choice for wavier and finer hair. This means more natural movement is being utilized than fierce movement is being fought against. The cut itself is already doing plenty, but some added color may brighten things up a bit.

Chic Feathered Layered Cut with Soft Movement

#25 Feathered Layers That Make Your Natural Waves Pop

I like the feathering on this cut and how it was designed to bring out the natural waves, rather than just trying to conceal the texture your hair has. It encourages the hair to do its own thing, and invites the natural movement instead of trying to suppress it. I also think the length is nice and the cut isn’t boring. The front layers sit nicely and also give the rounded face a little framing effect and slim and elongate the look. Fine hair really benefits from the layering because it opens up a lot of volume without removing the necessary weight. It is an easy to maintain style that you can just wash and go, which is why I think it’s such a great cut.
