Around my fifth year behind the chair, I recall a customer coming in with a picture of a Korean celebrity. The picture showed stunning face-framing layers and my client mentioned something I’ll never forget. She said another stylist told her layers “wouldn’t work” with her hair texture because it was too straight and too dense. I remember thinking how wrong that was because that is the sort of hair that comes alive with good layering. The weight falls differently, the movement comes alive in unexpected places and when you frame the face, rather than chop, the whole shape of the style starts to work with the bone structure instead of just sitting there.
The finish I see with face framing layers on Asian hair never gets old, and that’s because the end result is always unique to the individual. The difference could be due to their hair density, how their hair falls naturally, if they air dry their hair or blow dry it and the list goes on. In this collection there are some cuts that I really love because they feel a bit more unpredictable, and a few of them did something that I absolutely didn’t expect until I looked close enough. So let’s get into it.

#1: A Clean Lob That Knows When to Stop
It feels great seeing a lob that ends right at the shoulders or just a bit longer. This particular lob features an effortless movement, added layers, and most importantly, the freedom to not worry about styling or air drying to change your hair drastically. If your hair is medium or fine textured, this length is going to be low maintenance and high manageable. Just some smoothing serum is all you need to pull it together!

#2 Long and Polished with Color That Pulls You In
Before discussing the layers, I want to mention the highlights. They sit at the perfect position to frame the face, and catch the light wonderfully. As for the layers, they are adding shape to keep the length from feeling heavy or flat, so they are doing their job. On thick, straight hair like this, subtle layers work a treat. The variation in tones of the colors adds an elevate touch to the look and makes it seem pricy, while the upkeep is easy. It will look awesome with regular trims for the ends, as it will help to keep that dry, papery look at bay. But in any case, this hair cut is very low maintenance.

#3 A Textured Lob That Breathes
This is one of those haircuts that will earn you a lot of compliments. The questions you may have could be reasonable, considering a haircut can look better than others for no apparent reason. This is a great example of effortless layer blending. Natural layers create the illusion of amazing hair. The face framing pieces are also soft and move nicely with head turns. The length of the cut is also nice enough to be low maintenance. This design is such that medium density and finer hair will really like it. The lightness that coarse hair has cannot be replicated and that is what makes this cut work. With this cut, the best hair type is the one that embodies that effortless look and for a lot of hair types, that look is not attainable.

#4 A Bob That Doesn’t Try Too Hard
I prefer bob styles that look effortless. I like the relaxed look of the texture, and the highlights are perfect because they keep the style from being too busy while still keeping the shape of the cut. It’s not often that you find a bob that keeps its shape through the day as well as this length of bob does. When bobs get a little messy and lived in, the texture and spray help to keep the look. This one maintains its shape really well, even without the products in it.

#5 Tousled Waves That Actually Look Good on Day Two
Wavy bobs can look effortlessly good instead of being considered “sloppy.” This really depends on the angle of the cut layers and the placement of the ends. This cut does it well, the waves frame the face nicely and it doesn’t look too crowded. The mid lengths also have some nice texture which will add volume. If you are the type to not restyle your hair every day, don’t worry, cuts like this will look better as it becomes more lived in. To add some more dimension, a soft balayage underneath would be nice.

#6 Curled Layers with Tendrils That Do the Work
The tiny bits around the face contribute significantly to the overall appearance, and I say this in the most flattering manner to whoever cut them. They hit right on the cheekbones, creating a nice framing effect, and that’s the type of thing you usually have to work on to achieve, but here it just happens because the lengths are perfect. With fine to medium hair, the curls create a sense of fullness and make everything feel more alive. If you have thicker hair, though, you might want to leave those face-framing pieces a bit longer to avoid them puffing out where you don’t want the extra volume.

#7 Cascading Layers with Bangs That Stay Out of Your Way
I like how soft these bangs are. They do not dominate the look. They maintain the visual length of the face by keeping it shorter. The layers pick up from there and move everything further down. This sort of layering creates volume in fine to medium hair where it is needed. It does not shorten the overall length, which is what is usually the concern when someone with longer hair is hesitant about layers. The whole look reads youthful without trying to, and that is the best version of it.

#8 Soft Waves That Settle Right Where They Should
What I found most remarkable was how face-framing shorter layers add warmth without any color work doing the heavy lifting. It’s all in the cut. This cut is relaxed enough to feel natural, and it’s medium length which means you’ve got loads of options to wear it down, half up, or tuck it behind your ears and the face-framing pieces still do their thing. This looks best with Asian hair textures ‘cue cause the natural weight of the hair softens the waves, so instead of springing up too tight. A wider barrel curling iron will get you this in about ten minutes.

#9 Curled Layers with Bangs That Add Something Unexpected
It seems the style of this cut, with the combination of bangs and curls, adds a sweetness to the look. It adds warmth and softness to the face. Curls will hold better to medium to thick hair, and that is a big part of why this looks so good here. This hair has real curl bounce, unlike a blowout that will fall by lunchtime. Honestly, the tradeoff is that keeping the curls looking fresh is going to mean a commitment in product. If you live somewhere humid, an anti-frizz cream is essential.

#10 Long Layers in a Chestnut That Feels Like Fall
Certain colors harmonize better alongside some more than others. Rich chestnut hair colors with this skin tone is case and point. The layers are flowing and add a nice movement to straight hair without altering the overall silhoue, which may appear easy, but is deceptively difficult to accomplish. With medium-density hair like this , the face-framing pieces blend into the rest of the cut instead of sitting apart which provides a more cohesive finish. Once you have the shape dialed in, this style is pretty straightforward to maintain.

#11 Auburn Layers That Change in Different Light
This is a color I continue to gravitate towards. Auburn can be a little tricky on Asian hair as there needs to be enough warmth to make it look intentional but not so much so that it looks too unnatural. This hits that balance. The layers are designed to create movement through the mid lengths and ends so the colour moves, shifts, and reflects light. With thicker hair, this kind of layering helps to manage the weight and prevent the hair from all falling into one heavy curtain. I think it’s the sort of look that has a new photo every time and that’s part of the appeal.

#12 Wispy Bangs with Layered Ends That Move
I really like the wispy bangs here! They are light enough to see the forehead through them and keep the whole look more open and airy instead of heavy. The subtle texture at the ends makes me think they were point-cut or razored. This type of cut will transition really well through the seasons, and will not require too much commitment. Although the bangs will need to be trimmed often, it’s such a small price to pay for the change they’ll create in the overall look.

#13 Layered Waves with Bangs That Feel Effortless
The bangs are soft and natural looking. The layered cut is just right so the natural wave isn’t restricted and can rise, move and sway freely. With thick hair, this creates tons of volume and movement without looking heavy or bulky. I’d say the only major consideration is to have a good wave enhancing product on hand, for the days when the texture needs a little extra help.

#14 A Lob with Waves That Feel Grown-Up
This lob hits all the marks, with an air of sophistication without being too serious. The soft waves are intentional and framing. As for coarse and medium textures, the layers bring an internal movement so it looks styled, even when it’s not freshly done. The highlights woven throughout the hair add dimension, and makes the hair less flat in certain lighting. Great detail, if you are someone who pays attention to the little things.

#15 Long Layers with Highlights That Know Their Place
This highlighting really works because it adds brightness exactly where the face-framing layers are so the color and cut work together instead of independently. On thick, healthy hair with a natural wave like this, the layers will form a cascading effect which will make it seem like there is more volume and movement than there really is. It is a good combination for longer face shapes because it focuses on creating horizontal impact across the cheekbones instead of vertical. This is one of those styles that really gets better with time as the layers grow in a bit and soften.

#16 A Layered Cut with Bangs That Feel Like They’ve Always Been There
I love how settled this style is, almost like she has been wearing this for a while and it belongs to her now. The bangs frame her face perfectly, and the chestnut hair has a lot of dimension to keep it interesting. With this cut, the waves will have something to work with the layers and the chestnut color. It adds to the hair thickness without removing too much bulk and balances out the hair when the hair doesn’t have a lot of density to spare. It is the type of cut where you leave the salon and by the next morning it looks like yours.
