One of my clients pulled out a Pinterest board of emo hairstyles, which was not shocking considering all of the emo trends I have seen revival this year. What surprised me was how many of the styles looked like they were made for 2026 and not the original years they were made for. I think this is because we have so many more advanced styling techniques now that can help achieve the look. Back in 2005 we had cheap box dye that would wash out to a muddy brown color and hair was straightened using an iron. Now we have color products that don’t wash out, and advanced cutting techniques to achieve the look people want.
On top of this, I think it’s great that emo hair is coming back. So many styles leave either the color or cut looking unfinished, but these looks provide an overall balanced emphasis. People want drama, attitude, and architectural structure, and the return of emo hairstyles are giving them what they want. I’ve enjoyed it so much in the salon, so I’m going to explain some of my favorite styles that are more achievable than they look.

#1: Deep Purple Streaks Through Choppy Layers
I am really excited to talk about this look! I love how the purple streaks are placed here. These streaks are not random, but instead woven throughout the design. There are choppy layers that give some fantastic depth to the design. The layers that were cut appear rather uneven. This unevenness compliments the dark base very nicely. The dark base also gives the bangs an asymmetrical look which works great at framing the face. This is a bold choice for a layer color especially when paired with the dark base, and it is one of the more high maintenance colors. With a bob like this, root touch ups will be needed every 2-2 ½ weeks to keep it bright. If you want to keep a bright purple, expect numerous touch-ups. This will create a double-take effect on your hair especially if you have an oval or heart-shaped face! The bangs help to give a smaller and tighter face shape which is very nice.

#2: Hot Pink Choppy Bob
I love this bob! I think the layers really help avoid that ‘helmet’ look that some shorter bobs can have. I think it’s great for medium to thick hair because the layers will look so full and not thin, straggly and sad. As for the color, I’d say that’s the main event here and you’ll need to get on a first-name basis with your stylist. Vivid colors like this one wash out super fast, especially if you take hot showers. With haircuts that have a lot of personality, I think it’s hard to beat this one.

#3: Pastel Pink Waves at Mid-Length
I’ve been recommending pastel pink for clients who feel like they want something really bold, but feel hesitant about a full neon. Pastel pink has a warmth and approachability that is perfect for those types of clients. With these waves, (especially good for fine hair) you’ve added a lot of body and movement with very little product. The mid-length layered cut and subtle layers really gives it that effortless and not overdone look. Pink pastels are also my favorites because of how this color fades. Unlike other colors that fade in an undesirable way, pastel pink softens into blush and peach tones that still feel intentional. This is a rarity with vivid colors. The transition is something you will appreciate between appointments.

#4: Black and Crimson Pixie
The deep black and bright red are classy colors that work well together. With a pixie cut, I find it more structured and less chaotic than other styles. When your hair lies flat, the short layered base is good because it will add some volume. While pixies are typically low maintenance, the base cut does give you added styling options, but the color will need maintenance since crimson can fade to an ugly muddy brown if it’s not refreshed often. It’s a nice asymmetrical cut that focuses the eyes which is the goal with a cut this short.

#5: Chestnut Shag with Long Wispy Bangs
I love shags, and this one hits the right notes! The chestnut color is deep and beautiful, plus the layers are rich and textured, and it just screams “cool”. That’s how emo hair should be, without all the neons. The bangs are long enough to be versatile; you could clip them to the side or let them come down. However, I will warn you that bangs at this length WILL go down to your eyebrows, so keep trims around every three weeks or you’re going to be super annoyed. This style looks great with medium to high density hair. The shag layers add movement without losing fullness, and it can look very polished or very messy depending on how you style it.

#6: Long Jet-Black Layers with Soft Natural Waves
This cut may look easy, but it has its details. The layers have good graduation and with the natural waves of the hair, no artificial heat styling is needed. You can appreciate the natural texture that comes from less heat. To be honest, though, it’s a huge commitment maintaining that length and health. You have to be consistent with deep conditioning and stay on top of trims. If let go too long, the ends can look rough really quickly. The good news is that long hair with movement like this is a classic look for almost all face shapes. It will suit an oval face nicely as the length will provide a nice extension down the face.

#7 Tousled Burgundy Asymmetrical Bob
Her color looks amazing and so does the asymmetrical bob! This cut’s loose texture is spot-on since asymmetrical bobs can appear too clean and editorial. The blend of burgundy with dark undercolors has such wonderful warmth and dimension. I like the shorter side that’s cut at the cheekbone. However, burgundies tend to be high maintenance since the color fades to a dull, muddy appearance after just a few weeks. The cut will probably be fairly low maintenance, especially for people with medium density hair or higher since the hair will hold its shape really well.

#8 Burgundy Bob with Feathered Layers
Here is another burgundy bob, although it is different enough from the others to take about it separately. The effect of the feathered layers is completely different. The last one was edgy and tousled, but this one is polished and softer. The feathered layers create a softness and frame around your face, and highlight your features, without going overboard. It is the type of cut that looks stunning when you just rolled out of bed, and it looks good if you spend ten minutes with a round brush. That is honestly the sweet spot for a lot of my clients. The versatility is legit. It can be day time to evening in a matter of minutes. This style is best for fine to medium-dense hair because it gives the most out of the style. The layers will add volume without adding any weight. It is an amazing color, but it does need some maintenance like most burgundy shades.

#9 Midnight Blue Waves with Teal at the Tips
This design has a truly stunning color combination. The deep base color of midnight blue adds depth while the lighter teals near the tips offer that brighter balance. This design is also a great representation of an evening ocean. It’s calming but also full of life. Natural hair that is thick and a darker color than the design is most ideal for this, since the thick hair will allow the waves to form and the colors will be much more vibrant and show more contrast than in lighter color hair. The straight across bangs are a nice classic emo touch, and suit oval and heart face shapes the best. Just a heads up though, two of the colors you have are considered fashion colors, which means touch up schedules and fade rates will differ with every color. For the colors on naturally dark hair, this peek-a-boo teal option will allow you to add even more color and creativity.

#10 Silver Pixie with Graduated Layers
There is a specific trend emerging in the world of pixie cuts and that is silver pixie cuts. For those not accustomed to silver colored hair, achieving this color is incredibly high maintenance. A drastic change such as a lightening step is often needed in order to achieve such a light color. This often leads to the hair appearing more brassy or more yellow. When this happens, a large amount of purple shampoo is typically used to create a more pleasing look. Pixie cuts also require trimming every 4-5 weeks in order to maintain the cut, which could mean a lot of time spent in the salon chair. With all that being said, if this does not scare you away from getting a silver pixie cut the look is definitely stunning. The shorter lengths of the pixie cut create a beautiful frame around the bone structure, and is especially stunning on those with oval or heart shaped faces. The blended graduated layers of the pixie cut create movement and structure and are very flattering for the wearers. The silver tone of the hair color captures an ethereal quality that is very pleasing in pictures.

#11 Black Bob with Crimson Dip-Dye Tips
This look gives a great introduction to playing with color and is the type of look I often recommend for clients wanting to experiment with color while still practicing professional restraint for their workplace. A black bob is simultaneously classic and professional, while those red tips offer just the right amount of flair to make it feel like you. If your hair is fine and straight like this, it makes the color look cleaner because there isn’t a curl pattern to break it up – you’ll have clear, crisp red lines instead of a blurred effect. Talking about color maintenance, it is lower than a lot of the styles we have discussed since there are just touches of color on the ends but because red fades and shifts, you will have to check in with your stylist more often than you would think.

#12 Midnight Blue Crop with Angular Fringe
Letting the fringe do the work is a pretty clever approach considering the angle, as it draws focus to the eyes and offers an editorial look to the entire cut. The rich and deep midnight blue color is wonderful on medium to thick hair which makes the varied layer lengths rich and thick, and gives a textured, dimensioned look that has lots of depth without being too fussy. I do want to be upfront that fringes like this are the most maintenance heavy components of a haircut as they grow out quickly and lose their precision, so you may be in for trims more frequently than you may have thought. Additionally, if you have a rounder face shape, this much angularity can work against you, so it is worth having that discussion with your stylist before you are set on it.

#13 Mauve Bob with a Soft Feathered Fringe
Seeing mauve used as a hair color would make me very happy because I love it. Mauve is a wonderful color, especially for someone with a cool undertone, because it is less obnoxious than other hair colors, but still stands out. I love this bob with the feathered fringe. The layers give so much volume to the ends, and the soft, delicate fringe shys away from the more whimsical looks. Such a cut is the perfect balance of being edgy and emo, but still tame enough to be appropriate for brunch with the family. These layers will give the most volume to hair that is fine to medium in density. Fashion colors always fade. Mauve will fade to a dusty rose, so it is extremely wearable. That gives you the ability to go longer between appointments and not have such a stark contrast when it fades compared to something like a hot pink or vivid purple.

#14 Teal-Tipped Pixie with Volume at the Crown
This pixie crown also adds height and gives it a youthful look. These teal highlights are the perfect pop of color that won’t overwhelm. These highlights are well placed for good contrast and balance for the cut. This style will suit fine to medium hair best. The volume of the crown with all the layers will help you achieve the look of more density than you actually have. Once you get used to it, styling will be easier than having longer hair. Just use some volumizing powder at the roots and style it however you like. The teal highlights will need regular touch ups, but since it isn’t a full teal, it shouldn’t be too bad.

#15 Jet-Black Bob with Lavender Tips
I like the dip-dye effect, and I think the black and lavender blend is one of the most standout color choices of the emo revival. The bob is cut sharply above the shoulders, with just the right amount of density to hold its shape. The lavender tips offset what would otherwise be a very structured cut. It’s a balance between polished and playful. For oval and heart-shaped faces, a jaw-length bob enhances the cheekbones, and the lavender hue softens the overall look while drawing the eyes downward. The maintenance level is slightly higher than usual because the lavender will need toning so it doesn’t look grey, and you’ll need to wash your hair less than normal to keep the black looking deep and rich to maintain contrast. I think the balance on this cut is great and I can definitely see it getting a lot of compliments and people asking where you got your hair done, which is such a nice compliment to receive!
