Numerous clients who arrive at my salon requesting a messy pixie cut have contemplated this decision for many years. Almost all of them comment, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?” A messy pixie suggests that it is chaotic and out of place, and ironically, it is one of the few styles that fully embraces a bit of mess. I recall a few years ago a lawyer walked into my salon very businesslike and put together, stating that she wanted a very “clean” pixie. I made the style a bit messy. A week later, she texted me saying that many people she didn’t know complimented her on her new style. Some people think that a messy pixie will make them look unpolished and unprofessional, but the opposite is true. A messy pixie cut gives the impression that the person has a lot of confidence, and many people are surprised by how well it looks on them.

This can be anything from barely there layers, to tiny pixie cuts, to messy, chaotic curls that create what seems like an endless amount of volume. The result you will achieve is totally based on your hair type and density and t for the realists out there, a little bit of styling in the mornings. I will be totally honest about what looks like a wash and go, and what looks like it will need a little more styling to get to that look.
#1: Short Textured Pixie with a Kiss of Highlight
This “simple” cut requires someone who knows how to use their scissors carefully. This cut uses soft, deliberately relaxed layering that builds just the right volume along the crown without it getting puffy, and the highlights are placed perfectly to catch the light instead of call attention to it. The cut is high quality enough that it allows your features to stand out. This cut will sit beautifully on someone with an oval or heart-shaped face and it works on just about everyone because the proportions are so well balanced. The good news about this cut is the amount of styling required is essentially nothing. The not-so-good news is that to maintain the shape of this cut, you will have to return for trims every four to five weeks.
#2: Jet-Black Choppy Pixie with Wispy Bangs
These choppy layers give movement and create the appearance of more hair for fine to medium hair types. The soft bangs suit the look and help soften it, plus they direct attention to the cheekbones. The shade of jet black is beautiful! Just keep in mind, if your natural hair is a lot lighter, you will have to do frequent root touch ups since this will grow out a lot and look unintentional. The dark color really emphasizes your layers!
#3: Coffee-Toned Asymmetrical Pixie, Clean and Sharp
This cut is precise. The front is side swept and elongates in a way that is super flattering, and the back is dense enough to avoid that thin look while the sides taper down. It strikes a balance between edginess and professionalism, which is a tricky look to pull off with a pixie. You’ll have to visit the salon a bit for this as the asymmetry does tend to fall apart in terms of structure as it grows out. I love how fun this cut is, especially the waves, because straight pixies can be a bit boring. The deep espresso color adds extra dimension to the waves so that they are layered rather than messy. It also so softly frames the face that the grow out phase will look more graceful than awkward. That said, if your hair doesn’t already wave, you might be surprised by how much more you’ll have to style this. If you have medium to thick hair with some natural wave, this is one of those styles that will be very low maintenance after you wash it.
#7: Curly Pixie with a Gentle Graduation
If you’re a little nervous about going short with natural curls this would be the style I recommend. The soft graduation around the ears and nape will work with the curls and adds a lovely feminine shape with out awkwardness. For this to work medium to thick hair is needed since we are depending on enough curl to hold the shape. I’ll be honest with you about upkeep. Curly pixies will always need shaping more frequently than straight ones because of the way curls shrink and how much they move. What can appear intentional in the first three weeks can look completely messy by five.
#8: Punk-Inspired Multi-Colored Asymmetrical Pixie
All the clients I’ve had wouldn’t suit this style, but if you want to take the plunge, go for it. A cut like this shows confidence, and the combo of dark brown, lime green, and purple is no exception. Backing up these statements will take commitment and a strong personality. If you work in a conservative office, don’t get this cut, as it will prompt a ton of questions in any social setting. This style is only for those willing to take a lot of risk, and confidently going to a place where this is is optional. If you like to play around with your hair then this cut is perfect for you. You need to have the hair density to pull it off, but if you do, the colors and asymmetry will be a work of art.nn
#9: Crimson-Streaked Curly Pixie
I have done crimson streaks on curly pixies a few times, and the contrast is amazing with all other color techniques for short curly hair. Crimson streaks hold short hair well and the color frames the face, so it draws attention to all the right places. Thick curly hair is the obvious match here, and the cut is actually pretty low maintenance shape-wise. It’s the color that you’ll be spending time and money on because red fades almost faster than anything else. If you’re not ready for touch-ups, the color will disappear quickly and for some people, it is worth it, for others, not so much.
#10: Silver Layered Pixie for Mature Hair
I’ve noticed this style is particularly well-suited for clients with silver hair because rather than fighting against the new color, it incorporates it. The layers make fine hair look fuller, and the texture is more intentional. The short layers provide lift at the crown, and all you need is a lightweight styling paste to help shape it in the morning. Very few haircuts actually get better with time, but this one does. So, you can go longer than you’d expect between salon visits.
#11: Coffee-Brown Wavy Pixie, Easy and Flattering
Bangs soften a face, and offer a line that is changeable, so the client can easily adjust their appearance without committing to a full change. The way bangs soften a look gives it a more laid-back vibe. This is also aided by the natural texture of the hair, which causes waves. Very few hair products are necessary as the hair is cut into short layers, allowing the density to be increased. This ultimately means the hair will appear more voluminous, especially if the hair is medium density. This is one of the more versatile pixie haircuts. It can be worn more laid-back, or more pulled together with some added styling to the bangs. This look also grows out nicely, which isn’t the case for many pixies, and it especially suits oval and heart-shaped faces. Regular shape ups are best every four weeks to prevent the layers from collapsing into each other.
#12: Silver Pixie with Delicate Layering
If your hair is fine or thin, silver hair can be workable without showing off the lack of density. The crown layering adds movement, and the shorter back layers keep the look tidy. From a maintenance perspective, the shape looks fine five to six weeks post-trim. However, keeping consistent with a good silver will be a challenge. Regular touch ups are a must, let it go and expect it to get brassy. Starting with a darker color base will add to the maintenance level. Budget for color upkeep because, overall, it’s a great cut.
#13: Vanilla Blonde Pixie with Textured Layers
Those darker roots blending with the vanilla blonde actually help you out a little as they add some depth without you having to do anything, and they make the grow out much more forgiving than an all platinum would. The textured layers move nicely and give medium to fine hair some visual weight. Depending on whether you want to fight it and tussle it, or smooth it down with some slicking serum, it’s a style that works dressed up or down. The layers could use a little more work to look their best, and it’s minutes, not a project.
#14: Golden Layered Crop with Soft Waves
This is a style that uses fine hair to its advantage, rather than trying to fight it. Gold highlights soften a lighter complexion and the layers provide a softer fullness around the crown which creates the illusion of fuller hair. The waves look effortless, but you will definitely need a small barrel curling iron and some scrunching product to maintain them. If you aren’t keen on going to the salon a lot, this cut will likely test your patience as the color and wave pattern will need consistent maintenance to stay fresh.
#15: Tousled Pixie with Natural Wave Texture
This haircut is meant to compliment your hair’s natural texture, instead of putting a shape to it. For softer, finer, and slightly wavier hair, this is a super easy and high return style. The volume created on top also balances out more round face shapes, and the whole look feels light and airy. A small amount of texture powder and a light product on top of your hair will do the trick to prevent the definition from falling flat by the afternoon, and that’s really all the effort you have to put in.
#16: Contrast Pixie with Bold Yellow Highlights
It looks like you are trying to give feedback on this hair ad, and I’m here for it! I do also want to state, however, that this ad is a little statement. The contrasting colors of black and yellow could be seen as bold, pr potent and inviting, however, it’s also quite possible that these colors could be off-putting, and people could quite easily scroll past the ad without stopping to see the hair. Layered hair will look good on thin hair, and that color job is no easy feat. The colorist did a good job of combining the black and yellow without it looking super random. There’s going to be a lot of upkeep with the layers and the color. If this is calling to you, just know what you are getting yourself into.
#17: Bleached Messy Pixie with Disheveled Texture
Haircuts that are messy and layered can work, but our hair bleached can be unhealthy and damaged. Some layers in your haircut can give it some texture and volume, and can be great for framing your face, but the stress that putting bleach on your hair will hurt it a lot. You will for sure need to do deep conditioning treatments every single week. When hair is healthy, conditioning is done regularly, and the color is kept bright, it is a really good haircut that does not require much styling. It is very dry and very damaged hair can look burnt and it is frustrating to say the least. Keeping this haircut is a lot of work, and conditioning is a huge part of it to make the haircut tolerable and to keep it a great option.
#18: Chocolate Curly Pixie with Built-In Volume
This is the cut I most recommend to clients with curly hair looking to retain their texture. It allows denser top curls to remain controlled instead of the entire shape ballooning out. A little mousse scrunched through the hair is all that’s really needed to style this. One downside to curly pixie cuts is that they tend to grow out faster visually. Curls also change shape as they gain length, so to maintain the shape, the style will need to be cut every 4 weeks.
#19: Espresso Tousled Pixie, Effortless Edge
I enjoy the way deep espresso colors work with fair skin when it comes to short hair. It creates a nice contrast without having to do color technique or highlights. A solid single process will do the trick. For layers, they don’t look limp and create just the right amount of texture. The finish is great, not too polished and not too messy, just right. All in all, this hairstyle is very adaptable for all ages, work, going out, etc. The style won’t even need any small changes. You can achieve this look in the morning in just a minute or two with some light product to keep that tousled look.
#20: Sun-Kissed Copper Pixie with Choppy Texture
The cut is extremely close, and that warm copper color is going to grab and warm up the most important part. With the sides made tight, those lumpy longer bits left at the top will allow you some control over the styling. The cut works nicely for finer hair as the texture will give the illusion of more hair. Round faces also benefit from that upward lift. The color will be what takes your time and money, though, because copper shifts and fades more quickly than most colors. The sun-kissed warmth won’t be around for long, so expect regular maintenance to keep it from going muddy.
#21: Short Stacked Bob with Playful Bangs
If you’re not ready for a full chop, a bob and pixie hybrid might be perfect for you! The shorter layers in the back give you nice volume without the bulk, and the short bangs are super flattering on everyone as long as they sit above the eyebrows. This style holds the best with medium to thick hair as there is better support to maintain the shape and hold the stacked layers into place (without them collapsing!). Something to mention is that bangs this short are a *huge* commitment since the grow out is super awkward really quickly. Be prepared to book trims every 3 to 4 weeks!
#22: Tapered Brown Pixie with Subtle Layers
I admire this for the understated elegance it has. The gentle taper elongates the face softly, especially flattering on round face shapes. The subtle layering adds movement without the excess. The ideal hair type for this is medium to fine hair as this cut does not need a lot of density to hold its shape. This hairstyle has a broad range of appropriateness, from twenty to sixty, and will not look dull over time. The cut has low maintenance, but will require regular trims every four to five weeks to keep a clean look as the taper will lose its elegance and looks uneven.
#23: Chestnut Windswept Pixie with Hidden Undercut
An interesting feature is the undercut at the nape. From the front view, it looks like a typical layered pixie cut, but the undercut removes bulk where it’s not needed, and visually provides more thickness where it’s needed. I do that a lot with fine and thinning hair, and it is very effective. The color my client chose is a rich chestnut, which is perfect because it is not high maintenance. The highlights woven through the layers add a unique quality to the cut and make it look more expensive. The cut looks good but does require more maintenance. The undercut will look messy as it grows out, but the top layers are very forgiving.
#24: Platinum Blonde Choppy Pixie
I understand that Platinum is a little controversial, so I won’t pretend that everybody will like it. In a bright, modern way Platinum looks gorgeous especially on choppy pixie cuts. If you add choppy layers, that helps fine hair avoid the flat look. And it will take a serious commitment to keep it looking like a fresh platinum because upkeep means you’ll be visiting the salon every 4-6 weeks. If your hair is naturally dark, it will be even more damaging as lightening is a process. But if striking is the goal, then the cut and the platinum are the best way to go. If you are looking for something a little different and a touch more subtle, a warmer blonde would be a great choice.
#25: Brunette Waves in a Short Pixie
Softness is added to the cut with waves. This gentle touch is often lost with a pixie cut. The waves also help with texture. And are uncluttered by the shape. This is a close to wash and go style for your hair if you have medium to thick hair with a natural wave. A slight grade in the back of the cut maintains a clean neckline. It also gives the overall cut a very interesting shape. The brunette color will work as a good low maintenance option. This will be soothing to those who will need regular cuts to their hair. This shade is low maintenance and universally flattering. It is perfect for oval and heart shaped faces.
#26: Auburn Angled Pixie, Warm and Low-Key
Auburn hair is one of those colors that makes a person look warmer and more awake. People cant quite place why that is, but with a short haircut the effect is even more accentuated. It also means more skin is showing around the face to reflect that warmth. When the hair is cut shorter in the back at an angle to just above the crown, that gives a nice volume to the hair that is also easy to maintain. This is definitely the case with fine to medium density hair that lies fairly straight. If you have curly or very thick, this specific haircut may not be the most suitable. The clean angular lines do need a bit of cooperation from the hair, and very textured hair tends to misbehave. If your hair is straight or only very slightly wavy, this is definitely a low maintenance hairstyle.
#27 Curly Copper Pixie with Warm Dimension
Your defined curls are full of warmth and charm, and paired with your skin tone, the copper color will create warmth magnetism. Additionally, this color works particularly well with rounder face shapes as it captures the light and draws focus to the center of the face. You’ll gain texture and volume from the playful curls, but this style can be labor intensive. And yes, I know the truth hurts. Depending on how tight they were set, you will definitely spend some time on the curls at this length. Following a wash, you will need to apply a specialized curl cream to your damp hair, then use your fingers to scrunch the hair. Be sure not to dry your hair with a towel. This technique will create the intended spring in the curls so that they can be separated. If you do not do this, the curls will simply clump into a solid mass.
#28 Short Textured Pixie with Soft Framing Bangs
The bangs here look great. They soften the forehead and draw the eye to the face without being too heavy. The length above the ears is neat and the overall style is warm and youthful without being too fancy with the color. The warm brown is nice and doesn’t need fancy color. This is a good style that is easy to maintain for straight to wavy fine hair. When the hair is lying too flat, you may need a texturizing paste but this is really quite a low-maintenance style.
#29 Choppy Layered Pixie with Longer Textured Bangs
The short back and sides are low-maintenance and easy to wear and the longer bangs provide enough length to style some more. The layering through the top creates an intentional unstyled look that is particularly great for pixie cuts. The proportions work especially well on oval and heart shaped face; it won’t suit all hair densities and if the hair is very thick at the crown it can become bulky without appropriate thinning.

It’s a common but hard stylist trick to do simple haircuts, but in these cases, it shows just how well it was done.

This style’s loose curls give lots of personality to this cut. If your hair happens to be like this naturally, you’ll be fortunate since it will need little to no styling. If your hair is fine, and usually lacks body, then the added curl will make this cut a particularly great choice where hair density is a concern. The light blonde will fade to yellow, so you’ll need to get your hair toned regularly to maintain that bright and light color. When it comes to this style, it really depends on the amount of natural texture you have. If you have it, go for it! On the other hand, if you don’t, this is probably not the style you want to attempt to push.

I love the flicked ends on this one, they really help the crown look lifted and more lively without going overboard on the whole cut. For the flicks to do what you want, it only takes a small amount of styling cream run through to the top sections, and the resulting look on fine to medium-density hair is one that appears to require a whole lot more effort. On oval and heart-shaped faces, the effect is especially strong because of how the layers open up around the jawline, and the slightly tousled finish keeps things less formal. Almost every pixie will require regular trims, and that’s true of all the ones that you are going to want to get.

With this hairstyle, you would need less maintenance than it appears and you would want a light product to hold the hair up.

An interesting quality remains to allow for a messy finish without having to disconnect layers. As it grows, that is more than I can say about a majority of variations of pixies, and it looks great even with the bare minimum of work with a ton of effort, and ages great.

The cut will flatter a lot of face shapes as the layers do the framing rather than the covering, and this cut gets better with time.

But if you want it to have a bit more volume, you can just do a quick root dry and that should do the trick.

The energetic shape of the cut is achieved by short bouncy curls, and that is exactly what one strives to gain by going short with curly hair. The delicate layering allows each curl to bounce freely without creating too much volume, and the overall shape is sleek enough to compliment almost all face shapes. This haircut is particularly suited for fine curly hair, because the curls give the hair the weight it needs to keep the shape. The only downside is humidity; on damp days the curls can get a bit puffy or frizzy, so an anti-frizz serum is a good thing to keep on hand. Otherwise, this haircut is basically low maintenance.

It’s meant to be low maintenance, although some people do feel that a quick re-style mid day is necessary to keep the volume elevated. It’s a small trade off for a cut that looks this amazing.
#42 Copper Pixie with Soft Layers and Warm Glow
I recommend the color copper because of the way its finish makes skin look more warm and healthy. Also, short hair reflects light in a way that creates an even cooler look. Short cuts around the face increase the impact of the warm tones. The soft layering creates a shape that gives reasonably fine hair more texture but without taking away from the overall shape of the hair. The hairstyle works best with oval and heart faces. Compared to warmer browns and neutral blondes, coppers do require more maintenance because the warmth fades quickly. But, if you like the color, the upkeep is easy.

The cut is designed to work with your curls rather than against them, so while some product will be needed to manage puffiness, the trade-off is that good hair days will come effortlessly.

You will need to keep up on regular trims because the layers grow into each other, and the texture disappears, and then you’re left with just a short haircut that lacks personality and that is boring.

Longer hairstyles and jawlines go well together. With longer hair the natural curls or waves come out more. Longer hair softens more angled features and enhances your cheekbones. Overall it will look youthful but not like you’re trying too hard and that’s what makes it so great. To keep the defined curls in throughout the days without a wash you’ll need to use a lot of product. This hairstyle requires minimal maintenance and will grow out well. You won’t have to worry about the styling and it looks good for a long time.

A little bit of asymmetry gives this particular cut a modern feel, taking it out of the realm of a simple layered pixie, while the distinct layers add just the right amount of movement for medium to fine hair. More dynamic hair appears to be even more lively. The length is short enough to go low-maintenance on styling, but with a polished touch. The texture is also quick to remix with just a bit of product and some finger action. With this cut, the little things are big, and the asymmetry is one of those things. It might not be the first thing people point out, but it absolutely makes the cut waaaay more interesting than any of its symmetrical versions.
