Watching people with ear-length hair cuts walk around is one of my many joys in life. Most people touch their neck or jaw for the first time when they get a new haircut. One of my previous clients, for example, had been growing her hair for more than a decade. When I asked her about her new cut, I had to explain to her that having long hair no longer meant having short hair. She looked so tall when I was still cutting her hair. I feel like I’ve been doing a job for a long time. I love the fact that ear-length hair cuts can be so versatile. You can achieve different looks such as sleek or edgy cuts, as well as soft flowing hair. It’s almost a miracle that you can have so many different hairstyles at the same length of hair. Styles such as the ones previously mentioned can be easy to achieve by simply having the right layers with appropriate texturing. Most of these hairstyles do not require a lot of maintenance. The haircut does most of the work, and I tell that to my clients that are over 40 years old.

#1: Soft Rounded Bob with That Just-Right Fullness
I keep going back to this style because it gives great results for faces without too much work. The rounded layers give a soft fullness that gives a healthy, natural volume that isn’t too over done. The rich warm brown color makes it look even better. This cut will make your hair feel fuller if it is finer. You will have to keep up with conservative trims every five or six weeks because once the shape starts growing out, it looses that clean rounded line that gives it the most character.

#2 Tousled Textured Bob That Looks Like You Didn’t Try
This type has a look I am forever trying to achieve; clients who want to look refined but not too polished, you know? The soft wave pattern adds personality and cuts down on styling time in the mornings. Under layering is my favorite part. It’s so subtle you wouldn’t really see it in a picture, but it adds some movement and stops the ends from being too blunt and thick. You are just about there if there is any natural texture to your hair. A little bit of sea salt spray scrunched into your damp hair and you are set.

#3 Textured Pixie with Highlights That Actually Look Natural
The highlights really stand out because of how they capture light at different levels of the hair. Instead of just looking like a color job, they make the whole cut look really alive. This is one of those styles where the cut and color are really working in unison rather than just coexisting. The style sits beautifully around your ears and I think it really opens up your cheekbones in a way that photographs better than it looks in the mirror, which is saying a lot. If you are thinking about going shorter than a bob for the first time, I think this is a really brave place to land.

#4 Cropped Waves with Easy, Undone Texture
I can see why you think it looks so natural! The waves are great, and a bit imperfect which is how you avoid that blowout effect. The hair is going to have more body the more layered and wavy it is. The length is practical too. It is short enough to feel fresh and free, but long enough to tuck it behind your ear when you’re working. If you want to take it further, a few highlights in the mid-lengths and ends would add more dimension.

#5 Warm Copper Lob with Feathered Ends
With warmer skin tones, that beautiful copper color will definitely enhance your natural glow. The ends give a layered, feathery style that prevents the hair from feeling heavy, and there’s so many styling options at this length! You could tuck it behind the ears, wear it all out, or do a half-up style. The only downside to copper is that it fades so quickly but you can extend the waiting time until your next color appointment by using a color-safe shampoo that deposits some tone with every wash. The fresh color is gorgeous!

#6 Short Textured Cut with a Weightless Feel
This haircut is really nice. The hair is layered close together, allowing for structure without the hair being stiff. The way this cut falls around the face looks effortless and not styled. The highlights look good as well. The highlights are blended to not look artificially created, and keeps the base color from looking flat. This is a good option for people with longer hair looking to go shorter without the commitment of a pixie cut. Even though people can’t pinpoint why, this haircut will earn compliments saying you look refreshed.

#7 Ash Blonde Crop with Lived-In Layers
It could be difficult to wear ash tones. If the undertone is unmatched with your skin tone, it might look muddy. However, ash done right is more cool and not too icy. The layers have softness and keep the shape relaxed instead of too structural. This is going to be in the ‘wash and let it do its thing’ category, which I love. Most hair types will fall right into this, and it won’t have to be styled. If you want a bit of root volume, a light, volumizing mousse will do the job. The cut is doing most of the work, so you won’t need it.

#8 Feathered Bangs on a Short Textured Cut
Bangs at this length really change the vibe of a short cut – they really do bring attention to the eyes and frame the face a lot softer. These are feathered as opposed to blunt, so they really do blend into the rest of the cut, and won’t create that hard line across the forehead that a lot of people worry about. The texture throughout the sides and back has a lovely lightness to it. I find that bangs are the most committal part of any haircut, they grow so quickly and before you know it, they’ll start to poke you in the eyes, so be prepared to book bang trims in between your regular appointments.

#9 Tousled Shag That Moves When You Move
This shag haircut deserves its time to shine! It works beautifully at ear length with the shorter face-framing pieces. It looks like the haircut moves, and not just from the front which people usually look at. The movement is different because of the way the layers are cut which looks good, and not just to create volume, but movement. It feels a lot more alive when you turn your head and the ends fall differently. The highlights on the front pieces brighten up the face right where they should.

#10 Layered Bob with a Soft Side-Swept Fringe
I like what this side-swept fringe is doing. It is creating an angle across the forehead that is very flattering, especially since it draws attention to the cheekbones. The subtle layering is done well enough that she looks like one solid shape rather than a bunch of layers stacked on top of each other. I love how soft this is, and how easily it can go from something as simple as an office outfit to a dinner outfit. The only downside is those layers will need to be trimmed regularly so that the movement looks intentional instead of messy.

#11 Side-Swept Layers on a Sleek Bob
This is a simple and easy ear-length bob, and I think people will be interested for that reason. It’s not loud, but it looks nice. The side-swept asymmetry adds a little more interest without overdoing it. Those with fine hair will actually benefit as it will drape perfectly. The balayage is a little warm and added some dimension, but she blended it so well you could really miss it. I would recommend this for the minimal aesthetic.

#12 Warm Highlighted Bob at the Jawline
The jawline length is very nice and specific and the warm highlights are beautiful against that natural base. The texture here is nice and soft, and not crunchy or overly done. Just the right amount of softness that makes it feel super touchable. I really like how full it looks without being heavy, that’s all about the layering being perfectly calibrated to the density. This is one that I could see working on a lot of different people because all the elements are classic and well balanced. Nothing too trendy, or anything that will feel dated in six months. Sometimes that is exactly what you want.

#13 Fiery Copper Crop with Choppy Energy
This style definitely stands out. The chopped layers and bright copper work together to create a bold style that strikes a balance. It’s more of a daring choice that includes having some fun. The texture shown in the cut is intentional. These pieces are not random; each one is placed to create extra volume on top and some movement on the sides. On the other hand, the level of copper saturation does require some upkeep. This means that you will need to use a color depositing conditioner between appointments, and a refresh 4-5 weeks to keep it from getting brassy. But if you are ready to commit to the maintenance, then it is a look that has a big payoff.

#14 Beachy Waves with a Relaxed Attitude
I just got back from vacation, and my hairstyle has that I-just-got-back-from-vacation look. It has a scraggly, messy, and natural vibe, while also having a sun-kissed and relaxed flavor that’s perfect for summer. The waves in my hair look so nice, and they really look as good as they do because of my hair’s natural ability to do it on its own. Luckily, though, for those who require a little help, looking that good is only a ten minute job with a curling wand. With all that being said, I really appreciate how the sun-kissed waves hairstyle is a good mix of relaxed and refined. Most people just look like they are sleepy and tired all the time, but with the new layers and shapes around the face, cheekbones, and jaw that finish just above the ears will make them look more alive and active, which is pretty cool.

#15 Sleek Ear-Length Bob with Clean Lines
I enjoy how uncomplicated this style is. Having a haircut this neat, and hair this healthy, you truly don’t need more. There’s always a gamble with a straight, sleek bob, but with the addition of quiet layering, it will never read as a helmet haircut and it provides a touch of internal movement so it can still flow and shift if you move your head. That finish is so high gloss, and I hate to say it, but it probably is due to a quality shine serum and round brush blowout. It’s polished and classic, and one of those haircuts that just never goes out of style.

#16 Ear-Length Shag with Wispy Bangs and Rooted Color
The wispy bangs are amazing. Because they are light enough to see through, they feel less heavy on the face, and they’re more forgiving as they grow out. And the shaggy layers? Together, they create the cool vibe that is really hard to achieve with more structured cuts. The melt from darker roots to lighter ends looks great and you won’t be fighting regrowth every three weeks, let’s be real, that’s a consideration for a lot of us. To keep the bangs and ends looking as piece-y as they do here, just a little texturizing paste will do the trick.

#17 Blunt Bob with Statement Bangs
Thanks for your commitment, I love the bangs! Picture framing the face brings emphasis to the central features of the face. The bob is so precision I love it! It creates a beautiful visual with the contrast of the jaw structure. The depth and sophistication of the look is enhanced with the darker roots. I’ll be honest I know I’m in for a lot of work if you were in my chair haha. It is a high maintenance look, and I imagine you would need to do a lot of work to keep the bangs looking neat and trimmed regularly every 2-3. However, it is such a striking look.

#18 Curly Bob with Soft Fringe
I really enjoy curly bob hairstyles as they have so much character. The loose and open curls rather than tight ringlets give a more romantic feel to the entire style. The way the bangs soften and blend into the curl pattern rather than clash is what I love. That demonstrates how well the person who created this really understood curly hair and how it behaves, which isn’t a given. The great news is you probably won’t need a ton of product to achieve this look. For this style, just some decent curl cream will do and apply it to ankle length hair when it is still soaking wet, then let it air dry. Hair that is naturally curly or wavy is needed to achieve this look. If your trying to achieve this style with a curling iron, it would give you a completely different look, and not the right one, as it would be very rigid.

#19 Feathered Curls on an Ear-Length Bob
Compared to the last version, the curls are more structured thanks to some layered feathers that give each curl the freedom to spring. It bounces with youthful energy that is, in all honesty, both a part of the cut and because the styler absolutely knew how to work the hair. There is a full, well-distributed volume without the common mushroom shape, which is always the challenge with curls at this length. If you are dealing with a natural texture, embrace it and allow the cut to do its thing. If not, I would probably steer you toward one of the wavier options.

#20 Curly Bob with Face-Framing Bangs
Here’s another curly bob! This one feels more playful and a little more tousled, and I love it. I also love the shorter, rounder bangs, which give this look a cute vintage vibe. Too much curl length can be a bad thing, but stopping the curls at ear length helps to avoid that problem. Curls can look very different when wet than when dry, so if you’re considering this style make sure to tell your stylist cut it dry so that you can see the final shape. That way you won’t have to guess where the curls will spring up to.

#21 Textured Bob with an Undercut for Edge
Not a lot of people might notice your undercut, but you’ll feel it every time you touch your neck, for that reason alone it is satisfying. This undercut is subtle enough to remove some bulk and allow the top layers to fall with more movement and bounce. Because of the contrast created by that precision undercut, the top texture is loose, natural and free. If the hair around your neck gets thick and heavy, this style works especially well because you are removing hair that causes that problem. It is true the undercut will need buzzing every couple weeks to remain clean, but the rest of your hair will be very easy to maintain.

#22 Reddish-Brown Bob with Natural Wave
The reddish-brown color is beautiful in combination with the natural wave going through it. The natural wave will reflect light at different angles along the wave and showcase the color variation. With a blowout, you’re losing half of the beauty to this cut and color. I also, think that styling should be kept to a minimum to show off the texture of the hair. Hair that is air dried looks more beautiful, alive and super textured. If you don’t have wavy hair then this probably isn’t the style for you because of the unnatural look it will have.

#23 Playful Textured Bob with Easy Volume
The everyday bob is versatile, functional, and stylish, and I mean that from the heart. The way the layers create movement and add height, I really appreciate. The smooth shape and consistent profile, even as it grows out, is a great reflection of the quality of the cut. Not all cuts can claim to still look this good six weeks after. This cut will look great on the day of your appointment, and again six weeks after. All you need for your blow-dry is a little mousse at the roots, and you’ll have all the volume you desire. The cut is uncomplicated, but it’s dependable and flattering, which is all anyone can really ask for when it comes to their hair.

#24 Sleek Brunette Bob with Quiet Side Layers
The polish on this one is lovely. Everything is in its place, the blend of the layers is so good that it’s hard to tell where each layer ends and the overall shape presented is clean and cut and looks so effortless. This length and this level of sleekness creates such a rich, put-together vibe in this shade of brunette and makes it look like you didn’t spend an hour on your hair. This is one of those cuts where fine hair is actually an advantage, as it falls so nicely. Those with coarser or thicker hair can totally achieve this cut as well, but will likely need a smoothing serum and a good flat iron to get to that level of sleekness.

#25 Elegant Textured Cut with Soft, Dimensional Highlights
What an amazing way to finish! The highlights are stunning and woven through the different layers creating both depth and brightness. They catch the light at different angles and the texture from the chop will be so simple, elegant, and un-fussy. I think they will sit at the sweet spot for so many of the women I work with. The length here is straightforward, the styling is easy, and the look is so natural and effortless. For a first ear length cut, if you want something classy but not too severe, I’d honestly suggest starting here.
