I think we are going to have a very long first-time client conversation after I finish with the client that says they want highlights, but they want to keep their hair color and not look like a different person. People do not give enough credit to dark brown base hair for being dark and brown. Brown hair may look basic, but it really has a good response to light. Highlights may look like a subtle change in brown hair, but they may completely change the way hair looks when it is in a light and even the way that person looks when they are in a mirror. I used to see a client that used to box dye her hair a dark brown color because she thought hair highlights looked too done up, and she would also look too done up. Highlights that she had done were crying to her because they were done in a subtle way that no one can really tell, but they were so beautiful that they made her look so beautiful that she would really look and appreciate the small change. I love so many different colors and shades, but it really is the technique that matters which is what I want to go through different techniques for you all to show you the different shades.

The only thing I would point out is that dark bases with warm highlights will change and get lighter, so if you want to keep it the color, color safe shampoos will be necessary.

What a blowout! I could go on for ages about this one. The result makes you think the owner has perfect hair, but it’s all technique! The honey highlights are a perfect lift from brown. They reflect light without going too blonde. The highlight and blowout look so polished. I would say there is no other way to achieve this level of polish besides a round brush and blow dryer, and that is a necessity. The cut already shows that to achieve this look you will have to do some recreating, which is a good thing. You won’t be starting from scratch with the highlights because they photograph so well, and you won’t be starting from scratch with the highlights because they look even better in real life!
#11 Bouncy Layered Curls with Tonal Depth
It surely seems as though these curls are doing most of the talking here. I think these highlights create an almost three-dimensional effect to the hair when it is curled, as each ringlet seems to grab a somewhat different color depending on how it is light. The face framing layers have purpose to them, as they aren’t a few shorter pieces thrown in. They are meant to open up more around the cheekbone area. I would recommend a mousse to keep those curls light.

It’s the kind of cut that is wash and go once you figure out how your hair behaves, which I love.

I appreciate the sincerity in your look. Not every look has to be a statement. Every so often an outfit needs to be effortless, healthy and have movement in it. One of my favorite combinations is curly hair along with highlights as it is so easy to maintain. The coils of the hair reflect the light and show off all the different highlight colors. The dark brown highlights are placed closely to the base color and dark brown highlights to keep everything balanced and still add to the dimension. To maintain those curls bouncy and defined, I would recommend a curl defining cream. For straight hair as well this is a great product to make use of your texture instead of working against it.

This is an example of how beautiful warm highlights can look on wavy hair. Wavy hair has such movement that it really showcases different colors. The warmth is a nice touch and makes it more approachable. This style is also pretty low maintenance given that it’s medium in length.
