While organizing my things the other day, I found a photo from about 2019 featuring one of my favourite clients. She had been bobbing her hair for years, and one day I managed to persuade her to get a choppy pixie cut. She could not stop smiling and ended up in what I consider a happy crying moment. She said it was the first time in a decade that she looked like herself again (not an exact quote). Moments like these are priceless, and are one of the reasons why people are so reluctant and/or resistant to getting a pixie style cut in their 50s and 60s. It’s not about trying to look younger, it’s about looking like the version of you then and not when you only stopped growing.
Movement is all your hair needs for you to not be spending 30 minutes trying to create some fake morning ‘do. When you have a good cut, like a good choppy pixie, clients have said they feel like they’re cheating when their styling routine goes from an hour to just five minutes. Let me tell you, their cut is nothing like cheating, it is just really amazing. I could talk about choppy pixies all day long, so here are 25 of my absolute favourites.

#1: That Soft Layered Blonde Pixie You Keep Seeing on Pinterest
For clients who want something a little shorter, but are still apprehensive about going TOO short, this is the pixie I show them. The delicate layered blending doesn’t say “I chopped my hair off!” It’s more like, you woke up looking effortlessly beautiful! And that light blonde is working a LOT. It’s reflecting light, giving the overall look a lot more fullness. If your hair is on the finer side, a little volumizing powder at the roots will help. Just tap it in at the crown, and you’ll be golden. Literally.

#2 Warm Brown Pixie with Those Perfect Piecey Layers
I can’t wait to work with your light brown hair and layers! Look at the highlights! That’s the right amount of color. Not one bit looks like you tried hard to get that color. The back is cut with a chill vibe. An edge wax is all you need for definition. It’s going to look so good you won’t mind the trims every 5 to 6 weeks.

#3 Bright Blonde Choppy Pixie That Just GOES
This is such a fun haircut! I love being able to spin the chair to see the mirror and us both go “YES!” The blonde highlights look amazing and how they add dimension to the haircut! The layers are really helping to achieve that cool lived in look. If you have fine hair, this type of layering is your new best friend! It creates the illusion of so much more hair with all that texture. I’m not joking. The only thing I’ll say is be sure to stick to your trim appointments because once those layers start growing out unevenly it loses that magic.

#4 Wavy Choppy Pixie with All That Natural Texture
The cut looks great with just a subtle wave, and this cut really shows off the texture! Length that sits just above the jawline is extremely flattering, and the crown layers give lift without looking extra, which we want! It is ideal to have that volume but not the poofy look. With a little bit of scrunching, the ideal texture look is just going to be so easy to attain. All you have to do is just scrunch and go!

#5 Light and Airy Layered Pixie for the Low Effort Girlies
I recommend this haircut for clients who look me dead in the eyes and say, “I will not spend more than five minutes on my hair.” These layers are soft enough to pretty much style themselves, and all it takes is a little finger action while drying! If you want to go a little crazy, some soft highlights would break up the solid color and add some dimension. It’s one of those haircuts that seems like a ton of work went into it, but actually, it took no work at all.

#6 Bouncy Choppy Pixie with That Fun Energy
For somebody who walks into a salon and says, “Make me look fun!” This is the perfect style! It’s fun! It makes you look fun! The choppy layers give an incredible amount of bounce and the soft waves throughout the top section look like you just ran your hands through it and walked out looking amazing. A few spritzes of texture spray and you’re good to go. I will say this cut does grow out kinda quick so be prepared for that, but while it is fresh? Unbeatable!

#7 Soft Choppy Pixie with Sneaky Volume at the Crown
I want you to notice with this cut where all the volume is going. It is going to the crown and that is where you want it because it gives you that lifted look, without any backcombing, teasing, or anything like that. The layers will create enough movement to create volume and all you will need to do is use a little mousse and scrunch it in while it’s damp. This is especially good for a rounder face shape because that height on top is super balancing.

#8 Silver Pixie with Those Fluffy Cloud Layers
One of my favorite services to do are clients who have fluffy layered silver hair. The airy texture is so cloud like, I love it! The silver hair adds a subtle shine that brightens up the whole face! I have to get a bit technical but silver and white tones go dull or brassy quicker than you think. A good purple shampoo is a must. When it’s fresh and glowing like this? Stunning.

#9 Feathered Pixie That Feels Like a Little Hug for Your Face
I explain to my clients that feathered layers are a bit more ‘friendly’ than choppy layers. Both cuts create movement and texture, but feathered layers are softer and more subtle. This cut captures that perfectly. It frames everything really beautifully without any hard lines. If you have fine hair this cut is going to work really well because you don’t need a lot of density for feathered layers to look full. You’ll want to use a light piece-defining product but the cut will do most of the work for you.

#10 Crown-Lifted Pixie with a Playful Bounce
Do the layers include the crown area? It looks nice and it adds a great lift and bounce to the haircut without being too much, The crown layers break up the solid color and add dimension. The best thing about it is the styling is pretty much the easiest ever. You could literally finger comb it with a little bit of cream. It’s super low maintenance and only the top layers will need a trim every now and then to keep the bounce up. It should only be about 15 minutes every few weeks. Looks great on heart shaped faces. It softens everything in the best way.

#11 Tousled Pixie with That “I Just Look This Good” Energy
Have you seen people who seem to have just rolled out of bed yet look amazing? This is the hairstyle equivalent. Soft layers, light waves, and all texture done without the assistance of any hot tools. If you have fine hair that tends to fall flat, choppy layers give built-in volume, and this is going to be your new obsession. You just need some volumizing mousse and your fingers!

#12 Crown Volume Pixie That Just Looks Expensive
I love how clean this haircut is. The crown area with some volume and contrast with closely cropped sides looks super expensive and classy. This looks great because the cut works with and enhances the natural texture of the hair and not against it, which is exactly how it should be. The ideal haircut is one that compliments the natural hair and this is a great example. The cut is clean and modern, it definitely looks like you spent more time on it than you actually did.

#13 Jawline-Length Choppy Pixie with Pretty Bangs
I want to take a moment to appreciate the bangs. They are soft and layered to draw attention to the cheekbones, but not hide too much of the face. The jawline length is gorgeous, and if you’ve thought about a pixie balayage, then this cut justifies it because the color contrast choppy layers. Get ready to be on good terms with your stylist because bangs and layers are very maintenance heavy.

#14 Wavy Volume Pixie That Basically Styles Itself
Can we take a moment to appreciate how beautiful this wavy hairstyle is? It is making me a little jealous over here. The soft waves cascading around the face look stylish while the choppy layers add freshness. The movement to the hair also ensures that the hair never looks flat or stuck to your head. This is actually one of the most common concerns I hear from my clients who are in their fifties. The do say the last thing they want is flat hair, and with this hairstyle, it’s one of the best things about it you’ll never have flat hair. Yes, it may mean more visits to the salon, but it will do really be a quick appointment so it won’t feel like a burden.

#15 Subtle Layered Pixie with That Soft Crown Lift
I love how the layers are cut so they look polished but still give us the choppy texture we’re going for. Not every pixie needs to look super edgy, sometimes you want something that reads more ‘elegant but I still have fun’ and this is exactly that. The slight height at the crown is drawing the eye up which is really flattering, especially if you have a rounder face. A light texture paste worked through the top pieces is probably all you’ll need to finish this off.

#16 Tousled Jawline Pixie That Looks Good on Literally Everyone
I think this is one of those styles that works for every face shape. I don’t say that lightly. I hate to say “this look good on everyone,” because it usually doesn’t. But the way the layers tease around the jawline appears to bring out other people’s features. The hair looks soft and for that reason you may want to use sea salt spray to get that look. Just keep in mind that it can be a bit sticky, and you don’t want too much.

#17 Curly Choppy Pixie That’s All Personality
If you have any natural waves or curls, screenshot this and show your stylist! The soft waves and choppy layers are so lively and give personality to the cut. You’ll have ear length hair so it will be easy to manage but it will be more of a ‘look.’ The layers are modern and fun, and with the curls doing their thing, the cut will be awesome! You will have to style the waves to keep them defined, but that’s the case with every curly cut. It’s not really a downside – it’s more a ‘part of the deal’ thing.

#18 Feathered Framing Pixie That Softens Everything
The layers are very nice and they frame the face well without looking helmet-y, which is a look I worry about when we go super short. For finer hair, the feathering helps adds the look of fullness and movement, which is great. I’ve done this cut a million times and it’s one of those that really makes people look rejuvenated, like they just got back from a really nice holiday. You know the vibe? That’s this haircut.

#19 Highlighted Choppy Pixie with Movement for Days
The blended highlights and short layered look are stunning. The color shifts and reflects light differently at each of the layers, so you can SEE every layer in the cut. The color and cut complement each other beautifully. The length above the ears keeps it easy to manage, and the soft waves provide the right amount of texture so it doesn’t look flat or dull. A few spritzes of texturizing spray and a quick scrunch is all you need. This also looks great in photos, so if your selfie game is important, take note!

#20 Tousled Short Pixie with Soft Natural Volume
I’d consider this a “your hair but better” style because it makes the most of what you already have without being too dramatic. The short layers create nice volume, and the tousled texture keeps it from looking too done. The best short haircuts, in my opinion, are the ones where people are unsure of what looks good about you, but know that something does. Just keep in mind that you will need to maintain your trims, because once this cut starts growing out, it quickly loses that effortless quality.

#21 Chocolate Pixie with All That Warmth and Dimension
The chocolate undertones in this color are so good! This color also makes your hair look so healthy and vibrant, and when you combine this with choppy, textured layers? Perfection! This is what I mean when I tell my brunette clients that the right warm tone can make your skin look incredible! The layers here create just the right amount of volume so that fine hair looks full and bouncy. To maintain this richness, you should use a color-depositing conditioner once a week.

#22 Classic Textured Pixie with Modern Movement
It’s timeless and will not lose its appeal as the seasons change. It just looks GOOD. Soft movement created by the layers and subtle waves is flattering, and the shorter length showcases your face. When the cut is that good, that’s the goal! I’ve been doing variations of this for years and it never goes out of style. That’s how you know it’s a good cut!

#23 Voluminous Choppy Pixie for Fine Hair Besties
All my clients with fine hair should see this to understand what an amazing haircut can do. Look at all the volume! The layers are doing their job. This look was created without extensions or gimmicks, just some really good smart layering to add fullness and life to fine hair. Put a bit of styling cream in while it’s damp and you’re going to get that perfect piece-y texture. I will absolutely stand by this as one of my best recommendations for fine hair.

#24 Silver-Highlighted Pixie with Playful Texture
These silver highlights are so soft and beautiful and really add nice dimension to this pixie cut! I love how the highlights are placed around the choppy layers. The color and cut are working together so well! The short length leaves an overall perky and lifted feeling and really gives this look a fun vibe, and I love it! To finish off this look, all you need is some texturizing spray and a little bit of scrunching that will really let the cut do the work. Just be sure to keep up to date with your toning appointments because as all silver highlights, these will need some love to stay bright and cool toned!

#25 Caramel-Kissed Choppy Pixie That Warms Up Everything
I love ending on their look because the caramel highlights are absolutely beautiful! They really brighten the face and create a soft filter effect. The choppy layers are nice, and create movement. The texture is really good from every angle. This is the type of cut that makes you look at your reflection in a store window and think “oh my god, I look great!” And I mean, that’s the point right? The layering technique is good here, and will make styling look effortless, just like you put in a lot of effort. Because you are choosing this, and writing this. I love that for you.
