While I was reorganizing my station, I came across an old picture from about 2013, I think. In the photo, a client has a precise, very intentional layered cut that we all thought was ‘edgy’ at the time. It’s almost funny looking back. What we thought was ‘choppy’ was actually a very meticulous and even cut. The real artistry is giving a layered cut the appearance of not being done. You can’t just take a blunt tool and start chopping. That approach has ruined many a cut, and I have been the one redoing those cuts.
The greatest thing about the choppy haircuts of today is that they have become much more individual. Each person has their own unique hairstyle, and these cuts are more tailored to that. Some will be more relaxed while others will have an aggressive attitude and some serious edge. I’ve gathered 25 distinct cuts that I feel demonstrate this the best, and I’m honestly thrilled about this collection, which is not something I often say about a bunch of haircuts.

#1: A Chin-Length Bob That Earns Its Texture
When bobs have a little movement, it always excites me, and this one does just that. There are enough variations in lengths that you get genuine texture without it crossing the line into messy, which is a much finer line than you would think. The decision to cut it at the chin was a good choice because it pulls everything up and makes her whole face look a lot more sculpted than it actually is. The highlights are just the right amount to keep the layers from looking flat. I also think this cut is perfect to give the illusion of having double the amount of hair and all you need is a good texturizing spray to give you that look.

#2: Soft Layers with a Balayage That Knows When to Stop
Your patience during the appointment was definitely rewarded! It is very hard to find someone who can exhibit that level of control during such a hands-on process like a balayage! The color adds the necessary fullness without saying a word to the extent that the movement will do the better of the talking here! The precise break of the heaviness ensures this will be extremely versatile, not to mention that it sits comfortably at mid-length so it frames the face nicely on the squares and ovals! I do believe some leave-in, and dirty hair is required to essentially let it do its thing to keep the shape and the effortless look, but the styling will be a bit more if you want to maintain it!

#3: A Dark Layered Bob with Bangs That Actually Behave
Side-swept bangs can go wrong in many ways, but these hit the mark. They are soft enough to blend into the layers without creating that awkward shelf that happens when bangs and layers don’t communicate. The deep black hue here is bold and striking. It allows the wave pattern to pop in a way a lighter color wouldn’t. Most of the time, this is a great wash-and-go. The downside is that you will probably need to re-scrunch the waves to help them come alive a few days. If you have been contemplating going darker, this is a strong case to do so.

#4: Sun-Kissed Choppy Layers That Look Like a Vacation
I keep coming back to this one because the highlights are doing exactly what highlights are supposed to do and so often fail to achieve. Highlights are making the choppy ends look intentional and almost luminous, like her hair just naturally grows with perfect dimension. These layers are textured enough to give movement, but not so aggressively that you lose the overall shape, which matters more than people realize on medium-length cuts. If you’ve got fine hair and feel like it just sits there, this is the kind of layering that gives it some movement. Just know those choppy ends will need a trim every six to eight weeks or they start to look wispy in a way nobody wants.

#5: Long Layers with Face-Framing Color That Actually Frames
I love how the highlights on the front of the face of this style fade into the rest of the hair. It creates a beautiful depth as the front pieces catch the light and the back holds all of that rich dimension. If you have medium or thick hair, these long layers will give you movement without sacrificing the fullness that you love. The texture of the hair is so natural, not like its been over-styled. Longer layers do require some maintenance, as the health of the ends make this style work, so don’t skip the trims thinking no one will notice.

#6: A Lob with Wispy Bangs and Just Enough Attitude
The choppy lob with wispy bangs is a style that can go either way, settling on “awesome” or for the complete opposite and make it seem like two different cuts were performed on the model. Although, in this example, it seems to work. The wispy bangs do not overwhelm the cut and the choppy layers feel consistent. The layers in the lob are casual enough to feel uneffected, but not enough to feel like it’s a messy style. The balayage adds nice warmth to the contrast around the layers, which is also done well. The bangs do have a more “flat ironed” look. That style will require a little prep each day to keep it looking nice.

#7: A Pixie That Makes You Wonder Why You Waited
When I do a first pixie cut, I always notice that when I turn them to the mirror, they smile or go quiet in shock. Either way, they always respond with the same look. This one has that energy. The soft bangs are not too harsh, the texture through the top gives it a little personality, and layering in the back gives it dimension instead of being too rounded throughout the cut. This is a nice fine haircut because it provides volume that would typically be added through a blowout and style. I am going to be honest, short hair takes a lot of upkeep and it will cost your stylist to get ready faster than your friends.

#8: Wavy Choppy Layers with Bangs That Frame Everything Right
The wave pattern is the biggest contributor while the choppy layers provide movement to the cut. Bangs are wispy with a slight part to keep them from feeling too dense or too commited. I love that she has wispy bangs. Highlights are scattered throughout that provide subtle gradation which elevates the complexity of the texture. This is also a good one for someone who already has a bit of wave and wants a cut that works with it instead of against it. Regular trims keep layers from blending too much because that’s when this type of cut really starts to lose its personality.

#9: Long and Soft with Bangs That Feel Effortless
Bangs with long hair always look beautiful. Here, the texture gives a more natural flow to the hair, rather than a more stiff look. The balayage is so soft that we might even compliment the colorist. For a fuller effect with a lower amount of product, hair that is fine to medium density is best suited to this hair color, length, and layering. Although as a fair warning, you will need to keep up with the bangs since bangs grow out quickly.

#10: Beachy Choppy Waves with a Balayage You’ll Get Compliments On
I think this is the most universally appealing haircut in the entire collection. The waves are relaxed perfectly, the choppy ends are modern, and the balayage placement is beautiful and highlights movement in the hair. It’s the type of hair that gets people asking, “Who does your hair?” which is the biggest compliment as a stylist. The haircut is especially good on fine to medium hair because the waves create “fullness” without the added bulk. You may want to keep sea salt spray on hand for second and third-day hair to revive the waves, but honestly, this cut is pretty relaxed even if you don’t do anything.

#11: Long Choppy Layers with Bangs That Look Like They Grew That Way
These bangs might make you want to get bangs too. I say this as a double-edged sword since getting bangs is a long-term commitment, but there is no doubt that these bangs are amazing. They are soft, they frame the face, and they go with the long choppy layers to give an effortless look that moves freely. The cut looks like she had a great hair day and just walked out the door. This cut with a wavy and medium dense texture is perfect for that effortless look. You’ll probably want to talk to your stylist about getting the right products to maintain that bedhead look and keep the layers defined without weighing them down.

#12: A Shag with Bangs That Mean Business
There are so many possibilities with shag haircuts, and they’re always fun for me to do. This shag is awesome. The bangs are a bold choice, the shag has nice texture, and the hair is perfectly messy in a rock and roll kind of way. Plus, you can really see the quality in this shag, and I love how it has so much personality. It works well for fine and medium hair since the shag gives good volume at the right spots. Shags can be low maintenance, but they require a bit of a commitment since shags need trims to stay shaggy. If you’re planning to grow out your hair, remember that the layers will lose shape, so the shag might start looking flat. You’ll need to budget for maintenance every 6 weeks or so.

#13: A Warm-Toned Bob with Real Edge
The use of warm tones and the layered cut create an inviting feeling, but still have an edgy quality to it. The chin length cut is flattering on almost everyone, while the tousled finish is the ideal casual ‘I woke up looking this good’ type of vibe. Given the choice, this is the bob style that I would suggest for anyone looking to change their appearance from long layers to something new after five years. This bob style is a great change without being overly drastic! You will need a light styling paste in order to achieve that casual tousled look, but the cut will do most of the work for you.

#14: Medium Choppy Layers with Bangs That Open Up Your Face
I love that it seems like the inspiration for the textured bangs and choppy layers was the same. There is nothing that feels cut and dried, or feels like an afterthought. The bangs draw the eye up towards her eyes, which is great, and the layers are so alive with the natural wave and some highlights. This style looks great on an oval face, but honestly the bounce and movement in the layers is forgiving enough for a lot of face shapes. The layers will need to be trimmed actually, to prevent them from looking flat, but that’s the case for anything worth having.

#15: Long Choppy Layers That Move Like They’re in a Commercial
The movement in this cut is amazing! The model’s hair is thick and straight, which can sometimes look heavy and one-dimensional with layers. However, the hair flows really well, and the layers don’t thin it out too much. This is the kind of cut that looks good in a ponytail, messy bun, or loose braid. that’s what most people want, even if they can’t put it into words. If you have thick hair and don’t want layers because of bad experiences, show this cut to your stylist. A little texturizing spray will help the ends of the hair look relaxed.

#16: An Icy Bob That Photographs Like a Dream
The first thing that caught my attention was the icy blue color. The ice blue color, as well as the warm color below it, grabs the attention and creates a nice contrast with an icy highlight and a warm color below. The choppy layers make this bob a great choice. Most clients looking for a bob with personality will find this to check all the boxes. This bob hits just above the shoulders and that length flatters almost every face shape so it’s rare that I have to talk someone out of this length. I think it’s reasonable to think that you won’t have to do a lot of styling. I’d say no more than five minutes to your morning routine.

#17: A Bold Fringe with Choppy Layers That Commit
Getting a new haircut is a big deal and your commitment shows, above all, in your bangs. The bangs are bold, but not too heavy, and they work well with the choppy layers (where most bangs and layers combos fall apart). The cut is warm and sophisticated, with a nice warm balayage that adds dimension but is not too overpowering (you’re just going for that chaos). If your face shape is rounder, this type of fringe will work in your favor, creating a vertical line to elongate both your face and your body. Bold bangs will need constant trimming every 3-4 weeks so make sure to keep that in mind!

#18: Curtain Bangs on a Choppy Cut That Feels Easy and Cool
The curtain bangs I’ve offered my clients have received great praise about how amazing they look. Curtain bangs have more versatility than standard bangs, and therefore match more styles. You can easily tuck the bangs behind your ears and let them fall around your face. The great thing about curtain bangs is that they’re soft enough to be tucked behind the ear and structured enough to frame the face. The shoulder-length choppy layers that sit in soft waves effortlessly add volume to the hair. This style is a no-brainer for oval and heart-shaped faces.

#19: Feathery Layers That Feel Light as Air
Aesthetics aside, I can tell this cut has a decent amount of technical skill behind it. The layered bangs are wispy without being extreme, and the soft feathery layers won’t be too harsh or overwhelming. The length is ideal for a \”test drive\” bob as it’s just above the collarbone and elegant without being too formal. There will be enough layering to make the cut feathery and airy – perfect for fine and medium hair. The cut is low maintenance, although it will likely require a round brush to get the ends to flip out.

#20: A Choppy Lob with Face-Framing Bangs and Quiet Highlights
The way the highlights are placed is good enough to be classified as contouring, since they receive the right light, frame the face and even layer to give a sunkissed effect, but in a very subtle way. The choppy texture elaborates on the idea that the lob is not too done, and the face framing bangs add just enough softness to everything that it finishes the outfit. This length is versatile for a variety of face shapes, and for fine to medium density hair, this layering technique gives the hair that desired fullness, as the bangs will demand the most maintenance. A quick trim to keep their shape will be all that is needed to keep the bangs looking fresh.

#21: Tousled Choppy Layers with Highlights That Add Quiet Dimension
Taking this specific haircut as an example, the closest treatment of styling and cut creates an effect that makes it difficult to separate the two, which is the goal. The tousled layers do a great job of deframing the face, while the highlights offer the perfect amount of dimension to keep the texture interesting and tone down the “I just got my hair done” vibe. It’s medium length, and it’s versatile enough to suit most face shapes and ages. It’s great for the fine to medium hair that requires a polished, easy style, that doesn’t come anywhere near a 30-minute styling time. For sure something to take to your appointment.

#22: A Chocolate Lob with Bold Bangs and Beautiful Depth
I love this color! The base is a rich chocolate brown which is really warm and gives the color a nice depth. It makes the choppy layers look 3D. The bold bangs really match the color too, they ground the whole look and provide a lot of focus. The layers are mid length and flattering, and really move well. The vibe is cool without being too cold, if that makes sense. This suits oval faces the most, but I think most people can wear it with some minor adjustments. For maintaining that lived in texture between washes a light dry texture spray is really good.

#23: A Feathered Bob That Feels Modern and Light
The bob is very fashionable because of the feathered bangs that add a playful touch to the hairstyle without making it childish. The length that grazes the shoulder is great for neck elongation. The golden highlights make the hair glow and adds warmth to the overall style. This is one of the cuts that you can have even with lower density since the thinner hair works. In my opinion, this is the least amount of effort style for the most chic result, and that is the whole point of getting your hair done! This is also great for thicker hair. Just make sure to ask your stylist to do a little extra internal layering to avoid a poofy look.

#24: Choppy Layered Cut with Bold Bangs and Real Personality
I like the confidence this haircut has. The bold bangs and shoulder length layered chop make a modern shape. This haircut is one of the rare ones that looks good unstyled and good when you do style it. If you have a rounder face, you might want to ask your stylist to reduce the fullness on the sides. This shape will be flattering on most people. If you want to go a little further, a subtle balayage will really elevate the texture.

#25: A Soft Choppy Lob with Waves That Do the Work for You
This hairstyle is ideal if you want something that looks amazing but is easy to maintain. Thanks to the face-framing layers, the look will come together with the natural wave, and will look like you put in no effort at all. The choppy texture will ensure the style is interesting and not boring. The cut is versatile enough to suit medium-length hair of any texture or face shape. Those with fine hair will benefit from the layered look that adds fullness which is not achievable with the one-length style; and the reverse applies to thick hair. If that is your case, be sure to tell your stylist how many layers to add to avoid the switch from looking “effortlessly undone” to “overwhelmingly puffy”. If you like that idea, a subtle balayage will add more dimension and depth as well.

#26: Beachy Choppy Layers with Bangs That Complete the Look
This one is my favorite because I feel like it looks most complete for a choppy layered cut. I really like how everything comes together with the bangs, beachy waves, layers, and movement. I feel like the mid length is good because there is enough hair to play with, but still light enough to keep that chop feel. The bangs are soft which keeps the cut from feeling too heavy. For thicker hair, I feel like the layers need to be done a bit more so that the cut feels airy and not chunky. I love the fact that it can be so versatile, going from day to night with no changes at all. That may be the best thing to say about a haircut!
