If you’re looking for a trendy new hairstyle, you might want to consider getting a choppy haircut. This style will give you a very modern and chic look. A choppy haircut is also very versatile and can be achieved on bob, long, and even short pixie hairstyles. Below we have put together 15 different hairstyles to get you inspired for your choppy haircut.
Despite having an unkempt appearance, choppy hairstyles take a considerable amount of skill to get right.
I remember one of my clients who had straight hair that reached her collar bone, and she said she thought her hair was boring. But after chopping her hair into a choppy bob, she looked absolutely astonishing and an incredible amount of personality came shining through.
I have 15 different styles of choppy hairstyles like pixie styles, lob styles, and warm copper and cool silver. Each of these styles utilizes texture differently, and I will be totally honest about which ones are wash and go styles and which ones are more maintenance. Choppy hairstyles work with your existing hair, and you will find one that is perfectly suited for you.

#1: A Copper Bob That Earns Its Volume Honestly
The layering here is really great. It is not just movement layers. It is built to lift the hair away from the head at the point of fall, typical to medium density hair like this. This makes all the difference in the world between a bob that just sits and one that actually has some presence. I appreciate that the copper tone is muted enough that it registers as warmth rather than a statement. It catches light, without overshadowing the cut itself. If your hair tends to just hang and do nothing, this is the type of structure that gives you shape, without having to blow-dry your hair to a fuller style every single morning. You will need to get your color touched up every 5-6 weeks if you want it to stay this saturated. For less maintenance, ask your colorist about a demi-permanent option.

#2 That Tousled Brunette Bob You Can Actually Sleep On
I appreciate styles that look like they were done in a hurry. It looks like the layers were cut right, and this style has that. The overall cut doesn’t look overdone, and the bangs are soft enough that they don’t need round-brush treatment every day. This cut works best on medium thickness hair that is textured and wants a polished look without the effort every morning. One thing to mention is it will look unwashed after a few days. You will need a texturing spray for the pieces so they don’t clump together. The contrast in the layers is what makes this cut really stand out.

#3 Chin-Length Copper with Bangs That Actually Behave
This haircut on fine and straight hair allows the texture to do its own thing, as opposed to trying to force some volume that simply isn’t there. It shows how fine the ends are. The wispy bangs help bring everything together. They are so light and free that they move with her, rather than sitting like a curtain. The rustic copper is a nice choice to go with her oval face and helps with the easy, lived-in look. It looks good as it grows out. You could air dry it and it would still look good, which for fine hair is the greatest praise I could give a bob.

#4 Caramel Waves That Grow Out Gracefully
This style’s balayage placement is really interesting. The transition from deep brunette at the roots to caramel pieces throughout the mid-lengths is so well done that in 6-8 weeks it won’t look neglected. It will look like your hair, and that is hard to pull off. It shows a colorist that thinks ahead. The wispy fringe and layers feel full and light, and just enough movement to draw attention to the eyes and the face. I would lean toward something with less volume on the sides for a very petite frame or narrow face, but for most people this is really well balanced. It is a cut that almost styles itself with just a bit of curl cream scrunched through damp hair.

#5 A Chestnut Bob with Quiet Confidence
This particular chestnut shade is warm enough to do some magical (in a good way) *thing** for your skin, fair to medium, it’s going to give a lovely glow to your complexion. The choppy layers are just enough to create a good illusions on thickness for fine hair, *and* they add some nice texture to the hair. A soft wave helps give the cut a looser feel without being too polished. If any humidity is a concern, just know you can throw a little anti-humidity spray at it. The shape of the style will relax a bit, truly it has a character of its own and can withstand a more relaxed look.

#6 The Kind of Cut That Looks Better on Day Three
I always look forward to doing this haircut because it is great for the client who wants to do as little as possible. The ends are softly layered so there is just enough movement to look styled, even when it isn’t. For fine to medium hair, only a little effort is needed to get it to fall just right. I have done this haircut on clients who say they own a hairbrush and a hairtie, and they always come back thrilled. If your hair is coarser or thicker, you might need to apply some texturizing paste to keep the layers in place, but for most hair types, this is about as close to wash-and-go as you can get with a layered cut.

#7 Ash-Brown Waves with Real Depth to Them
The color work done here is ash-brown and deserves appreciation as it is quite extraordinary. While the color shift displays some creativity, it is actually the cut that complements this effect. Each layer is cut in a way that lets the light reflect differently at each length, as the top layers are cut shorter than the bottom layers. This creates the illusion of depth that can only be achieved with multiple process colors, which is likely why the artist left the top layers darker than the bottom layers. Waves in the hair create body without bulk and the contouring around the face is soft, which is complimenting to more angular face shapes. To get this look you will need to style your hair with a wide barrel curling iron to get the same wave pattern as shown. This style is not super easy as it does require a decent amount of effort, but the end result could be said to be worth the effort.

#8 Brunette and Blonde Playing Nicely Together
The blonde accents are added in moderation around the face as well as the front pieces which helps in creating a light effect without going all the way into highlighting. That is trickier to achieve than it seems. The graduating layers make the bob feel airy and keeps it from looking like one heavy block of hair, and that’s especially nice on medium density hair that can get heavy with blunt cut. I want to be honest, maintaining the brightness of those blonde pieces without going brassy means using a purple shampoo and getting gloss treatments regularly. If that seems too hard, you could get a similar look with a highlight that has a bit more warmth in it as that is more forgiving in terms of fading.

#9 A Choppy Bob That Dries Faster Than You’d Expect
Choppy bobs dry very fast but no one ever talks about it. This one is going to make your mornings so much easier with all of its removed weight. nThe volume in your fine to medium hair is going to look incredible due to the cut not some product or heat styling. It appears that the layers were done with a razor or point cut. You can easily push soft bangs to the side and style them forward and they will not require as much maintenance as a heavy fringe. To maintain a fresh look, your stylist should be seen every 6 to 7 weeks. A choppy cut that has grown out too far just looks tired rather than intentional.

#10 A Brunette Bob That Knows Its Angles
What I notice the most about this cut is near the front. It is very soft, with only slight graduations to the shorter pieces at the cheekbone, but it does wonders for the face shape. Especially on rounder face shapes, this little bit of texture gives the illusion of length without having to grow the hair out. The natural brunette color keeps it all grounded and keeps the focus on the cut. The waves are soft enough to hold with little fuss, but you may want to add a little more product to them later in the day. This bob has that effortlessly chic look which is so hard to achieve.

#11 A Textured Lob for the Person Who Wants Fuller Hair Without Saying So
The choppy layers add a medium density illusion to the hair. The highlights give dimension to the hair as they texture so you won’t need to see your colorist for a touch-up every six weeks. This style will look fab in photos and on those awful Tuesday mornings when you’re late and just throw it up. A light styling product will keep the choppy layers defined. A sea salt spray or hair product will work, but maybe put it on before you leave your house. This style is low maintenance.

#12 Golden Brown Layers That Love Thick Hair
If your thick hair makes every bob you try look like a helmet, I recommend this one. Strategic layering removes extra weight from the sides and nape while still keeping volume at the crown and top. The golden brown highlights woven through the layers create the illusion of movement. This cut at jaw length beautifully frames an oval shape face. To be realistic, the richness of the color will require some upkeep, so plan for a gloss every 4 or 5 weeks to keep it from looking muddy. The good news, is the cut is low maintenance and grows out better than most bobs.

#13 Warm Auburn with a Fringe Worth Committing To
Bangs are the definition of perfectly imperfect. They draw attention to the face by sitting softly and not being too blunt or heavy. They take focus off the wider appearances on the sides of the heart shaped face, creating balance. The warm auburn is gorgeous and the face framing lighter pieces brighten the complexion so much. A small round brush will definitely be useful for the bangs, because with wavy hair it can go from cute to messy in like 5 seconds. The rest is also hair that looks like no effort was put in.

#14 A Silver Pixie for Someone Ready to Be Seen
This is a commitment cut – and I mean that in a good way. Going down this short and this silver, you can’t hide. All areas of your face and features become the center of attention, and this client has the great bone structure to pull that off. The waves provide volume where pixies can be flat, and that’s a gift if you have thin hair. People often assume silver hair is unflattering, but it is actually more universally flattering than people think, but it will take regular trips to the salon to avoid yellowing. Fortunately, this cut does come with perks – your styling time will drop significantly. A wax and a few finger swipes and you’re good to go. This hair length is definitely not low maintenance, and you will need regular trims every four weeks, but for the right person, this cut is completely worth it.

#15 A Medium-Length Chop That Flatters Without Trying
Of all the styles I could recommend, this one has become my personal favorite for clients. You don’t even need to be a morning hair person, as you can wear it straight out of bed, and look good. The cut creates an illusion of natural movement, and the little layers done under the crown create all the volume and lift from the root, and it’s all done with no teasing or backcombing. It looks great on round and oval faces, but a few tweaks from where the longest layers fall, I could make it work for everyone. The moderate length is more important in real life than any hairstyle guide will tell you. It means you can tie it up if you need to, and keeping the ends styled with some lightweight product will make sure it looks good. This cut is essentially effortless, and Styled.
