Chin-length hair cuts are often overlooked, especially by women over 70. They’ve received the wrong kind of stigma. While many women prefer to shy away from this hair length, many do not realize it is one of the most versatile. Many of my clients have said “I have to go short don’t I?” expecting to go for a chin-up cut because of some kind of imaginary age-related rule. Chin length is one of the only hair lengths where you can achieve softness, structure and movement. Not to mention, it is one of the only lengths out there that won’t stagnate and turn into a helmet. For example, I had a client last year whom I grew out a pixie. I had never seen this client cry before (and I have seen many clients cry) but the lack of wildness or drama in the cut had a single tear roll down her cheek as she gazed into her reflection. The cut was simple and understated and she looked like herself again’.
This length is great because of how versatile it is. It can be styled into bangs, curls, waves, or even layered. It also works with all hair textures. The length is also great because you won’t spend all morning blow drying your hair, but you also won’t have to keep it in a bun all day. There are many options when it comes to chin length hair, so let me show you how stunning I think some of these looks are, especially for women over 70.

#1: Soft Curly Bob That Gives You All the Volume
This particular hairstyle makes me happy because it makes my clients feel good about themselves. Making soft curls creates volume in the right places, and the chin length layers are very flattering. For those with thinner hair, looser curls and these types of layers are great because they really transform your hair to look so full and alive. A curl cream will need to be worked into your damp hair and then you need to scrunch it and diffuse it. Because that is all you need to do, and that is why I love this style so much.

#2 Bouncy Layered Curls at Chin-Length
We need to take a second to recognize how light and airy this looks! At this length, hair with layers won’t weigh you down or make your face look blocky. They seem to just kind of float there, which makes it look totally effortless. If you possess any natural wave whatsoever, you’re already very close to achieving this style! I wager this is one of those haircuts that really benefits from a soft balayage. Just a bit of soft dimension throughout the hair would be ideal so that the curls can reflect the light in a little different way. We are very much not talking about chunky highlights from 2003, just something blended and subtle. Sure, you’ll need to re-do some of your curls, but it’ll definitely be worth it!

#3 Gray Chin-Length Bob with Just the Right Amount of Layers
I’ll take a beautiful gray bob like this any day. The layers in this cut are very subtle but that’s the point. It helps with nice movement without looking too choppy or overdone. That light gray is beautiful. I really wish more of my clients would stop fighting this. For a silver or gray hair, a light gloss treatment will make the hair look less dull and more shiny. The subtle face frame in the front is everything, it just completes the look so nicely.

#4 Textured Layers That Frame Everything Perfectly
I’m impressed with everything going on in this style! Notice how the layers frame her face and really draw attention to her eyes. That’s a stylist who really understands layering! A style like this might look effortless, but it takes a lot of skill to pull off. The layers, combined with different lengths of hair create a really natural look and will be super easy to put a little product in and style. If your hair tends to get flat by the end of the day, make sure to pack a volumizing dry shampoo. Hair this length can require a little extra help.

#5 Gentle Waves with a Chin-Length Cut
I love sharing this with clients. Look at how the waves reflect light! That is what gives this style its glow. This is one of those subtle details that usually goes overlooked. The waves add just the right amount of volume without going full curly, great if you want something soft and feminine but not too ‘done’. The layers underneath are what keep it from looking too boxy or heavy at the bottom. If you have naturally straight hair and want this look, you can do it in about ten minutes using a 1.25 inch curling iron and a loose wrap.

#6 Sleek Auburn Bob with Subtle Layers
I tell my clients how chin-length bobs can look polished and not plain. The rich and warm auburn color compliments her skin tone beautifully. The layers are just enough to add life to the ends while still keeping it sleek. For the wash-and-go type, this bob is one of the easiest styles to maintain, provided you keep up with your trims. The magic starts to fade once the ends get scraggly.

#7 Ashy Toned Bob with Flattering Volume
I enjoy the ash colour! It gives a more contemporary look to your style. And crown volume? That is from the layers, not teasing or products, so that volume will actually last you throughout the day! If your hair is on the finer side, this is a fantastic demonstration of how the correct haircut can create the illusion of more hair. It’s not a marketing trick, it’s just good haircutting! A volumizing mousse at the roots will create a great foundation to build on!

#8 Curly Chin-Length Cut with Gorgeous Texture
Curls and waves are beautiful so don’t fight them! The way the layers fall is stunning, and avoids that triangle shape look I hear curly hair clients complain about the most. These types of cuts take a stylist who understands how curls are going to dry. There are totally different results when cutting curly hair wet vs dry. I could go on about this for ages, but for now, just know I love this look!

#9 Silver Bob That’s Clean and Effortless
An easy to pull off look, the added layers in this sleek silver bob entice me enough to give a slow clap. The soft volume and the framing of the face is very flattering and does not require overstyling. I applaud you for leaning into your natural silver hair, that beautiful shade deserves to be seen. Just a reminder, this look depends on clean lines so be sure to come in for trims every six weeks or so.

#10 Softly Curled Bob with Warmth and Movement
I always say that chin length soft curls are an instant “I look amazing and I barely tried” type of style, and this cut is no different. The curls elicit that fuller, denser look to fine hair, which provides the illusion we desire as our hair matures with age. Some warm, subtle highlights woven through would be so dimensional to this look. Nothing over the top, just enough for the curls to pop with different tones. Pretty to downright GORGEOUS.

#11 Silver Textured Bob with Soft Layered Edges
The layered texture is nice. They added softness and movement to the style without making it look messy. I love that it is chin length because it helps to draw attention to the face and won’t compete with the features. This is one of those haircuts that is a your hair but better. It enhances everything else going on. The silver color paired with the soft layers is a great combination. It gives the style a modern editorial look and honestly, it would look great on just about anyone.

#12 Wavy Chin-Length Layers with Easy Movement
I would consider this mostly a “set it and forget it” style. The soft waves give some detail to the cut, and the layers add volume to areas where fine hair tends to fall flat. What I appreciate with this style is that you don’t need 17 different products at a YouTube tutorial to recreate the look. With some quick scrunching and a bit of texturising spray you’re all set. I can see this for someone who wants to look put together but doesn’t want their hair to be an entire production every morning, you know what I mean?

#13 Bouncy Curly Bob with Natural Fullness
The bounce on this one is awesome! The curls look super natural, and her hair looks so full! This is the type of haircut that gets people asking, “What did you do to your hair?” and in this case, that’s a good thing. The chin length will keep things super manageable so there won’t be hours of detangling and styling, but the curls are long enough to really go for it. If you are going to have curls like these, then you NEED to get a good curl-defining cream because trust me, it will make all the difference between bouncy and frizzy curls.

#14 Wispy Bangs with a Soft Layered Chin-Length Cut
Regarding the wispy bangs, they are done impeccably. They are not blunt or heavy, rather soft and piece-y. They blend in flawlessly with the face-framing layers around her face, adding to the cohesion and intention of the whole cut. Unlike thick bang fringes, wispy bangs are way more forgiving because when they grow out a little, in between trims, they still look good as they become face-framing pieces. And the layered crown volume? Chef’s kiss. This whole look is elegant and youthful.

#15 Blunt Bob with Soft Bangs
I love clean blunt bobs, and this one’s beautifully executed. The soft bangs are a nice touch to help it from looking too severe. A blunt cut, no softening details, and you can look really harsh especially at the jawline. The sleek finish is stunning & super simple to achieve with a paddle brush and blow dryer. Just remember that blunt bangs will show all the damage at the ends and regular trims are NON-NEGOTIABLE. With this style you will want to be getting it done every 5-6 weeks. Do not let it go longer than that!

#16 Textured Waves with Chin-Length Softness
I like the way the waves are a little uneven as they break. It gives the cut a unique look rather than the basic mom cut from ‘94. The unevenness adds a lot of volume and dimension to this style. The texture from the cut looks great on naturally fine to medium hair. It looks great on naturally fine to medium hair and the soft layers relieve some weight. This style can be air dried and still look great. It would also look good with some rounded brush styling. There are tons of options with this haircut.

#17 Classic Silver Bob with a Timeless Feel
This photo shows a great example of a silver bob with soft, lady-like edges. This is clean and classic demonstrating a polished and put together look. It seems to me that chin length silver hair captures the most movement and looks intentional and sleek. Use a purple shampoo once a week to remove any unwanted yellow and brassy tones from your silver hair.

#18 Textured Chin-Length Layers with a Fresh Vibe
Don’t you think this haircut gives off the ultimate ‘I just came from the salon’ feeling, where you walk out and feel like a brand new person? The layers add so much dimension to the style, making it more versatile and interesting to look at from every angle. I love how layers around the cheekbone highlight that area and pull the gaze exactly where you want it. If your hair is medium density, this level of layering will flatter you so much because you will have plenty of hair to keep that layered look from being stringy.

#19 Charming Chin-Length Bob with Airy Layers
What an example of how beauty can be found in simplicity. The layers are airy, the texture is smooth, and the style is easy. I recommend doing a simple blow dry with some texturizing spray to complement the style. The best styles are the ones that are created without thinking too much! These layers soften the jawline, which is a small detail that makes a big difference. Most people wouldn’t be able to tell why the cut looks so good.

#20 Soft Chin-Length Bob with Gentle Volume
While there aren’t any distinct ‘layers’, the hair still has a lot of movement and looks a lot of looks full and healthy. The framing around the face is subtle but flattering, and it balances the look so that it doesn’t feel too heavy or bottom chunky. If your hair is a little finer and often falls flat, then a round brush blow dry at the roots will give the lift that this cut needs to really come alive.

#21 Elegant Silver Bob with Sleek Structure
I really like the accuracy of the haircut with the clean finishing lines. It really highlights all the structure and detail. The subtle layers give it enough movement without looking too stiff or too wig-like. The silver hair is so classy. This is another one of those styles that is super simple and just goes to show that less really is more. The cut does the talking so there’s no need to overload it with products or too much styling. All it needs is a smoothing serum on damp hair and a good blow-dry.

#22 Silver Curls at Chin-Length
THE SILVER HAIR WITH CURLS IS AMAZING!!! The curls give a very beautiful and youthful bounce that takes years off your overall look. The silver hair gives a level of sophistication that no other colors can give. The look is modern and fresh. One can tell she loves this style because it looks so good on her. For curls that are going to fall by the end of the day, use a light hold hairspray. A light mist spray to the finished hairstyle will hold everything in place without the crunchy and stiff feel.

#23 Modern Waves with a Chin-Length Shape
I find the waves to be quite impressive and purposeful. They could have gone crazy with styling the hair for the waves, but they refrained from going full out. Perhaps an analogy is to be construed here as if the hair is meant to symbolize being done and/or perhaps relaxed, and all the effort has gone elsewhere, (for these are obviously waves of purpose) but perhaps to keep the polished relaxed look means there was effort in that relaxed ‘do. It’s understandable many women crave that look, but face framing pieces create the texture of fullness in the hair, despite seeming straight and fine. Chin length hair is flattering to her structure so the added dimension to the waves (which are looking more defined) would be even more soft highlights.

#24 Chin-Length Layers with Wispy Bangs
BANGS! The soft and romantic style is great! I wish more women would try these wispy bangs! They’re so much less commitment than a full chunky bang. Plus, they grow out nicely and look good even a little unruly. With a chin length cut, they really help take it up a notch. Also, the light blonde and natural highlights help keep the hair fresh and bright! The texture looks like that effortless “I just woke up like this”. For that extra lift at the roots, a volumizing powder would be great.

#25 Polished Silver Bob with Beautiful Layering
I really love this silver bob! The layers are cut around the cheekbones, and cause the whole style to look really polished and give an approachable vibe. What I love most about this cut is that it was very clearly well planned, but it does not look overdone in any way. If you have little fly aways around your hairline, a touch of anti-frizz serum on the perimeter will help smooth those out and keep the look polished. Also, I really like styles that look good as they grow out! I hope this is one of those styles!
