It is said that one of the greatest changes someone can do to boost their self confidence is to cut their hair, and I agree. I always notice the nerves of my clients as they sit in my chair and wait for their first bob cut, but I know that they are really excited for the big change. A chin length bob is a small change that makes you feel like you are a brand new person. You will want to look at yourself in the mirror over and over.
One of my clients held onto her long hair for 20 years for the strangest reason. She explained that her mom used to say that she had a ‘long-hair face’ and that she would look out of place with short hair. She was finally ready to make a change when she walked into my salon. We took her hair all the way up to her chin. After the cut, she sat in silence in the stylist chair for 5 minutes.
A good bob cut can be loved by all. No such thing as a “good bob cut” exists due to people’s chances or their Instagram posts. A good bob cut is due to the individual’s unique proportions. A chin-length bob is so versatile. It can look effortless and casual, but opposite if you want it to. I think you all should check out my 25 bobs. These critiques are for you. I hope you appreciate my honesty, and hope you see the bobs for what they are, good or bad.

#1: Warm Copper Transformation with a Clean, Rounded Shape
It’s a big change to go from a natural brunette to a copper color, but such a big change is often quite nice! It warms up the whole look, and the change will definitely get people looking. The cut of a bob is nice and has a good roundness to it, nice and neat, but not too stiff looking. If you have longer layers and you’re ready for something that seems a little more intentional, this kind of shape can be really refreshing. It will be important to stay on top of touch ups to keep the copper looking fresh, but it is lucky that the cut will grow out nicely!

#2: Soft Chocolate Bob with a Bit of Lived-In Texture
I recommend this haircut for people who don’t want to put in time or effort to style their hair every morning. The cut appears to have some natural texture to it so it does not need a lot of work. What I enjoy the most about this haircut is the fact that it looks so effortless. A lot of people assume that achieving this look is easy, but in fact it takes a lot of skill to get this look just right. Hair with this sort of haircut can just be washed and dried and nothing more would need to be done, but if you have thin hair a thickening spray would achieve a similar effect.

#3: Cinnamon Copper with Piecey, Textured Ends
I love the colour, in particular, the cinnamon copper which changes with the light. It is warm without being red, and rich without being too heavy. The textured tips add some character and stops it from being too blunt or too precious. The longer pieces at the front also make it work because it draws the eye in and is very flattering to the cheekbones. Just so you know, this kind of copper will fade so you’ll need to talk to your colourist about a reasonable maintenance plan.

#4: Light Blonde with Soft, Tapered Ends
Pale blonde bobs have a certain calming quality, and this one is no exception. This style features a soft graduation, a bit shorter toward the back, and easing forward. The tapered ends help to avoid that helmet look that is always a concern with bobs this blunt. This would work especially well on fine hair since the weightless, airy nature of the cut works to your advantage. Honestly, mornings would be super simple with this style. Just a round brush while you dry, and you’re all set!

#5: Honey-Toned Layers with a Neat Nape
I love the nape of the bob. The subtle undercut helps create a close and tidy finish. I wish more clients asked about this cut because it truly makes a difference in how the bob moves. The honey tone color and slightly deeper root color adds dimension to the hair without looking highlighted. It’s the type of bob that looks effortless, but the layering is actually quite intentional.

#6: Deep Brunette Micro Bob with Feathered Detail
A length that rests around the chin area does definitely offer a different vibe than an average standard bob. The color is also a standout choice unlike the typical bright shades. Deep brunette tones give a thicker appearance to the hair which is a great stealthy trick! The layering is more subtle and feathered rather than stacked. There’s a whisper of asymmetry that’s almost imperceptible, but it helps keep the overall shape interesting. This is a look I would suggest to someone wanting a change without having to explain it to many people!

#7: Burgundy Waves with a Swept Fringe
The deep burgundy color is stunning! In certain lights, it makes the hair almost look liquid. The waves and the side-swept fringe feel soft, and helps to balance the boldness of this color. There’s no lie, it takes commitment to maintain such color and pattern of waves. On the days when you want to have those intentional waves, you’re going to have to dedicate a few minutes to your curling iron. Plus, you’re going to need a really good color-depositing shampoo to keep the color. The end result is worth it, though.

#8: Deep Chocolate Bob with Wispy, Lived-In Texture
There is a simple sophistication to this haircut. The warm brown color is nice and doesn’t need as much upkeep as a fashion color would, and the ends are super light and wispy which is great for thick and fine hair alike. It should get rid of some of the weight if you tend to have denser hair, which can totally change the feel of your whole head. This style is versatile; it looks great if you tuck it behind your ears, have it fall forward or even in a half up style. Not all bobs can be as adaptable as this one.

#9: Espresso Brown with Feathered Ends
Your attention to detail is appreciated. The clean bottom edge is nice, and I also like how the feathered edges keep it from looking too severe. Good middle ground, and the person who did the work here really gets it. The espresso brown is the perfect choice and doesn’t come with the upkeep of lighter shades. I would suggest this for clients who want their haircut to look sharp and intentional without a lot of styling in the morning. To maintain a clean bottom edge, regular trims will be necessary, every six weeks or so.

#10: Black-to-Platinum Ombre with Blunt Ends
I think this is something that you need to be ready for. There is an obvious contrast with the blunt cut and the roots being jet black and the ends being platinum. It works because the cut is simple. The color gets to do all the talking because the shape is fuss free. This will carry well if your hair is density medium to thick. The platinum ends will require consistent toning to keep this clean and the grow out will be visible, so you are signing up for a relationship with your colorist. If you love it, then it is worth it.

#11: Asymmetrical Bob with Quiet Highlights
The asymmetry in the cut is very subtle, and I think that is a good thing. The highlights are blended so well that they give softer contrasts and don’t create bold lines. The cut gives the impression that people will notice something is different about you, but they won’t be able to say what. The cut will pretty much style itself most days and is a gift for straight medium density hair.

#12: Tousled Platinum Waves
This platinum hair color is great for people with fair to medium skin tones. I like how it looks kind of cool. The sea salt undone hair texture is very fitting because it looks like you scrunched it and walked out the door. I like that it looks effortless. Because of how fine the hair is, the waves can create quite a bit of volume without having to tease or apply a lot of product. With platinum, the downside is always upkeep and you will need a purple shampoo to manage brassiness until your next appointment.

#13: Natural Curly Bob with Sun-Caught Highlights
Calling all curly haired friends! Here’s what a chin-length bob can do, curls have the space to bounce freely and the cut is designed to work with the curl pattern, showing off how the hair is cut to complement the curls instead of working against them. Those highlights give off nature’s best highlights from being outside vibes. What makes this one stand out is that it doesn’t attempt to tame the curls into something they’re not, and instead gives them a nice shape to live in. A curl cream scrunched in while your hair is still damp, and you’d be all set!

#14: Caramel Waves Growing Out of Darker Roots
The intended design of this root situation is actually insightful. It denotes that this cut will improve with time (as the roots darken the caramel will become more weighed and grounded). The waves also help to keep the look relaxed. I think this would be really great for someone wanting warmth in their colour but doesn’t want to go to the extreme of amping up the lightness all over. Naturally straight hair will indeed require some use of a curling iron to create these waves, but they don’t have to be perfect. A little inconsistency adds to the charm.

#15: Sunkissed Blonde with Graduated Layers
I love how warm the color is and how it appears to have aged naturally over time. On the back of the hair, it is just a touch shorter than the front pieces at the chin, so there is a nice subtle graduation there. In fine hair, the layers add movement and do not detract from the fullness you want to keep. The blonde is very pretty and low-maintenance; the brightness is worked for, but it does keep some work to be maintained.

#16: Golden Waves with a Side-Swept Fringe
Bangs are an essential part of this look. Without the bangs, it would just be another nice wavy bob. With them, though, it feels more personal. Swept bangs feel like part of the style, and do not feel like a decision separated from the rest of the look. The gold color is flattering, and because of the dark roots, you won’t have to hurry back to the salon when your regrowth starts showing. A medium-barrel iron and light texturizing spray would get you these waves.

#17: Sun-Kissed Blonde Layers with Windswept Movement
I appreciate the looseness of this look, and the fact that it appears as if she’s been out in the wind only makes it better. The layers create movement without looking overly layered, and everything flows instead of being caught in defined tiers. The color gradation is soft enough that when she does grow out her hair it won’t be too noticeable, which is something I think about when people opt for blonde. I would say if you’re using heat tools to get this kind of wave, a heat protectant is a non-negotiable. Your hair will thank you for it in the long run.

#18: Chocolate Mocha with Gentle, Undone Waves
The rich chocolate mocha tone of this look cannot be captured in photos because it shifts hue in different lighting. This style’s waves appear effortless and natural. They give the impression of being created spontaneously and are highly unstructured. This bob is incredibly versatile and can simply be adjusted to go from the office on a Tuesday to dinner on a Saturday, which is quite amazing in the world of hairstyling. If your hair is naturally wavy, you likely won’t need to do much to maintain this cut.

#19: Tousled Chocolate Brown with Wispy Bangs
The bangs are what make this entire hairstyle youthful and a touch undone, which is a good thing. The bangs are light enough to not overwhelm the face, but rather add a softness across the forehead that makes a big proportional difference. The bob has lots of strong layered volume, and I can tell it’s been cut with a razor or point-cut to get that kind of texture at the ends. The color is natural and low-commitment, meaning your time and money will be spent on maintaining the shape rather than refreshing color. That is a great trade-off if you ask me.

#20: Vivid Purple Bob with Straight-Across Bangs
I understand that not everyone will appreciate this style, but this color has the potential to bring real joy to some. The bold purple color paired with straight-across bangs creates an image of self-assuredness that really embodies the confidence of this shade. The textured chin-length cut helps to mitigate any heaviness the style might otherwise convey, while also keeping the cut from looking too blunt. If you’re thinking about doing this, I think you should, just keep in mind this level of vibrancy will require some upkeep to maintain. A surprising number of people will probably notice the difference color safe shampoo and cool water rinses will make. You’ll love it and probably want a change. That’s the nature of the game with fashion shades.

#21: Rosewood Bob with a Very Clean Cut
I like the peace in this cut. There is structure in the design, but it does not come off as rigid. The rosewood tone is warm and soft; it is the type of color that could look like your natural color but better. The beauty of the cut lies in the rosewood tone. Every hair is in its ideal position. This shape is very flattering for finer hair as the clear line at the bottom creates the illusion of added volume. It is a soft kind of beauty.

#22: Jet-Black Angled Bob with High Shine
When it comes to this haircut, the first thing people will notice is the shine. Healthy hair with a smooth cuticle will catch the light and look amazing, especially with the deep, black color. The angled cut will help to bring attention to the jaw line and the shorter back will help ease the cut forward. This is a very sophisticated style and I mean that in the best way possible. This style is a perfect example of hair looking great because of a great hair cut. One of my concerns is that angled cuts tend to get a little crazy as the hair grows, resulting in a look that is very unintentional, so be prepared to come in for a trim every five to six weeks to keep it looking on purpose.

#23: Blonde Graduated Bob with Soft Dimension
The graduation at the back adds built-in volume to the hair which I like. There’s no need for production or any technique to achieve the look. It’s full on its own. I also really appreciate the highlights. They add movement without looking chunky so the hair reads as one solid color instead of multiple different colors. When it comes to this being an option for fine to medium hair, it’s particularly good as the layering adds volume precisely where it’s needed most.

#24: Silver Gradient with Structured Lines
There are a multitude of different mistakes that can be made regarding silver hair, but this example demonstrates how it can be done correctly. The gradient from darker roots to light silver prevents the look from washing anyone out. The cut is very well structured and gives the color something strong to sit against. It is modern while also avoiding being overly trendy, if that makes sense. The lines are very clean and the whole design is a lot smoother. Day to day this will be very simple to style. The silver will require upkeep to avoid becoming brassy again.

#25: Tousled Bob with a Choppy Fringe
I appreciate this style and can sense the fun character it reflects in the hair. The layers appear to be messy, but they build volume on their own and even the bangs are so uneven they give movement to the hair without moving. The darker roots that fade into the lighter ends look nice since it gives depth to your hair, plus, you won’t have to be committed to constant touch ups. Assuming your hair is straight, you’ll want to put in some product and give it a rough scrunch to achieve this kind of messy look, but it doesn’t have to be exact, a little imperfection is the entire point.
