A client showed me a photo from 1996, when she had a chin length bob right before the birth of her first daughter. She asked me if she could pull it off again. Obviously yes. She was a but surprised by how different it felt to her though. We agreed that her face had not changed that much. We also had different approaches to chin length bobs these days. We had better texturing, smarter colour placements and much less focus on sleek bobs.
I believe women over 50 can carry off chin length bobs. The cut falls right at the junction of the jaw and neck which is very flattering. It may look sharp or soft on someone depending on the layers, control of movement and how the cut is styled. It’s a more versatile and complex cut than is often assumed, and that is what I love. I’ve done chin length bobs that look completely different on 10 different women and that’s exactly the point. The cut’s details like graduation and weight distribution, working with the natural texture or changing it and so on is what differentiate each of these cuts.
#1: Rich Auburn at Chin Length with a Little Natural Body
This color has a lot of depth to it, and it works all the way down. The value of the color is deep enough to read as natural, yet light enough to be warm and radiant against the skin. The warmth against the skin with my clients over 50 is an instant boost transitioning from tired to alive. The wave in this cut isn’t styled in, it’s just the natural texture of the hair doing its own thing, and it provides that effortless relaxed look that’s so difficult to achieve with a curling iron. There’s just enough layering in the interior to keep it from sitting flat, without the ends feeling too thin. If your hair is fine, this much volume at the crown is possible but you will really need to keep up with the length of the cut as once it grows out the shape will become muddy. And, of course, auburn color does fade, so plan on seeing your colorist frequently if you want to keep it rich.
#2 A Quiet Silver Bob That Doesn’t Try Too Hard
I always love suggesting this haircut because it looks fantastic, and it doesn’t take a lot of work to style it. There are layers, but they are not enough to make the ends look blunt or heavy. For fine straight hair like this, the subtleness of the layers works really well. If the layers were any more cut up, you would lose the density you are trying to keep. The gray looks amazing and it makes me happy when clients love their natural color rather than trying to cover it. Just keep in mind, gray hair often picks up yellow and brassy tones because of hard water, the sun, and heat tools, so you may need a good purple shampoo. This cut is also the kind where it will look intentional even if you don’t use a blow dryer and just let it air dry, which is not really common.
#3 Warm Chestnut with Face-Contouring Softness
I like how this haircut accentuates the cheekbones without explicitly doing so. The ends that curve inward are an interesting detail that most people probably don’t notice but I think lots of people enjoy that little architectural detail when they look in the mirror. The chestnut color will suit women who prefer a shade that has some color but doesn’t look overly “done.” I also like the use of asymmetry, but in this case, I think it will be more interesting than just safe. For finer hair I think the structure has been done well here, as the one length at the bottom holds its weight, and the softer layering is illusionary of greater volume. As for color, it will require maintenance as in regard to upkeep, chestnut will get warm quickly and look quite dull if left a long time between appointments.

The cut isn’t just pretty because of the shadow root. The intentional depth of the shadow root means you won’t be on a six-week color treadmill, which for such a light blonde is a huge life-saver. The mid-lengths texture gives a piece-y and undone look, even though someone really thought about the layering. This cut is simple, and on fine hair, this style gives you more to work with. A bit of texturizing spray, scrunched into damp hair, and you’re ready. I will say that going this blonde means you will have to commit to upkeep though shadow root will buy you some time, the ends will get brassy without the right products.
#5 Feathered Espresso with Sun-Kissed Dimension
Feathered layers have gotten a bad rap because of the 80s and the unfortunate associations people have made with that decade. However, when done with restraint, feathered layers, are one of the best techniques for chin-length cuts for more mature hair. Ending a cut with some lightness creates lift in the overall shape. Lighter woven pieces aren’t traditional highlights but mimic that lived-in worn look, especially with thinner hair. This technique creates volume and the illusion of movement without adding weight to the cut. To achieve this look you’ll want to be mindful that feathered ends do tend to look more scraggly than blunt ends which require more maintenance. You’ll need to book yourself more frequent trims than you might typically expect with a style of this nature on your hair.
#6 Brunette Waves Going Silver on Their Own Terms
Thanks for the haircut! The color is what draws me here the most. Gray hair is starting to come in. It feels most authentic rather than covering or correcting to conceal it, letting the gray coexist with the brunette. The gray creates an impact an all-over color simply cannot compete with. You let the process happen naturally with so much depth and dimension in the color. The loose waves look like she just slept in a braid rather than sitting in a chair with a curling iron run through. That wave energy is the whole look. This is an excellent example of what you could achieve if you have medium density hair and have been growing your color out. Just a heads-up, the waves won’t do it themselves. Expect to use a light sea salt spray or mousse if you want to achieve the look.

This bob hairstyle is what I show for clients wanting to look polished yet effortless straight from the salon. The chocolate brown color is flattering on all skin tones. The waves sit at the sweet spot between polished and airy. The layers here do enough to create volume so the hair won’t cling to the head which is often the battle when the hair is fine to medium density at this length. The layers here frame the jaw without drawing emphasis to it. Truly, this is a well done version of a classic cut. You’ll need an average barrel size curling iron or Velcro rollers if you want to keep the waves, but other than that, it’s really easy.

It’s hard to not be pleased with the recent rise in popularity of copper. Ideal with the right skin tone, it gives that inner glow effect rather than outer. I also really appreciate that soft touch of asymmetry. Most of my clients, I think, are right to steer clear of anything too avant-garde. One side is deliberately, if not too obviously, constructed to be longer, creating an angular face line that attracts attention. Layered waves do wonders for fine hair in boosting volume where it’s needed. I suspect this color will require the most upkeep; it’s very fast fading compared to the rest and will turn orange if not maintained extremely regularly, which I think is going to be a problem. All in all, I think this will be a wash-and-wear cut, as it will likely require less styling than it appears.

The dark brunette color makes the waves look richer and more defined. This can be helpful tip when managing medium to fine hair. The irregular wave pattern is the whole appeal, it’s the opposite of a polished blowout and that’s intentional. You will want a curl enhancing cream or a light mousse to keep the definition without crunch, but beyond that, this is genuinely close to a wash-and-go situation, which is rare at this length.

I’ll be honest, if you like being able to change your look up a lot this length probably isn’t going to do that as there won’t be any. No ponytails, no updos, no half up ones either. You’ll be wearing it down and that’s pretty much it. Simplicity is the appeal for a lot of women, but others find it quite restricting. It’s really important to know which side you fall on to avoid regretting your hairstyle choice.

It’s the sort of style that I think a lot about as it grows out, especially knowing how well it can work. Not every style can do that, but this one will transition really nicely into a longer bob without hitting any awkward stages.

I am picky with chin length hairstyles and bangs but here the proportions seem spot on. Wispy uneven bangs blend into the sides and are long enough to be worn forward as bangs. They versatile and that makes it so much easier. The feathery layers give a modern touch through the length, and it’s just messy enough to be perfect for finer to medium hair textures. Bangs make hair appear fuller, and layered sides create that same illusion. The reality of it is bangs will have to be cut every three weeks. If that is less than ideal for you, either skip the bangs and get the bob.

I would like to specify that this style is for thick hair only. On thin hair, this would be a totally different cut. The density in this cut is what makes the tousled layers and side-swept movement. When thick hair is one length to the chin, it can look quite helmet-y. The way these layers are cut does a great job of breaking that up. The chestnut wash is nice and rich without being too dark. As gray hair starts coming in, some warm highlights woven throughout would keep this looking intentional and alive. If your hair is finer and you want this look, we’d need to discuss some adjustments because doing this exactly would leave you looking sparse instead of full.

There’s some clever work going on the beveled ends, and it’s worth picking apart. The hair doesn’t just hang down or hug under uniformly, the ends are cut at an angle. That makes the ends flip out a little and that little detail adds a ton of movement and worsens the amount of volume a blunt cut at that length would give. When every little bit of fullness matters, especially on thinner, aging hair, that detail stands out while the woven pieces in auburn give the hair dimension and depth, and avoids the obvious highlight look. The sweep across the forehead is nice too. It’s a grown-out bang thing that works because it’s been shaped like that on purpose instead of just leaving it. This is a style that needs frequent maintenance to keep its shape like every five to six weeks because once the beveled ends grow out, you’re left without the volume that makes it special.

Toffee tone refers to the warm hue between blonde and brunette that offers warmth without committing to either side. On more mature skin, it has a softening effect that cooler shades don’t. The wave can be created using a large-barrel iron and about ten minutes, or honestly, by braiding your hair when it’s damp the night before and sleeping on it. I’m really looking forward to this haircut, as it solves a few problems that are unique to chin length hair. With chin length fine hair, it can feel a bit lifeless and flat. With the use of internal layering, we can achieve some movement without overbalancing the ends. The chestnut base color and lighter pieces on top provide a more textured look to the hair, making it appear thicker than it actually is. Maintenance is required to keep the color this dimensional, but the haircut is low maintenance; it’s just a quick blow dry and go. For most women, that’s a good trade off. This cut will frame your features beautifully if you have a heart shaped face. If your face is rounder, I would suggest repositioning the volume, as it can create widening at the cheeks.

I’m not sure how many people will appreciate the back undercut detail, but it does help the overall clean look of the style and it helps remove some of the bulk at the nape. Because of that, it is one of my favorite techniques to use for finer hair. Less bulk in that area allows the outer layers to sit in their intended position rather than poofing out. It’s a more polished look. The entire haircut feels more airy and lighter, which is a texture that you can’t get with scissors. The silver is a beautiful color and the waves add a lovely texture and will help keep it from looking flat or matronly. This is such an adaptable cut, and I’d honestly say it suits almost every face shape. The layers can be styled to compliment what you have going on. Just keep in mind that if you plan to style those waves with heat instruments often, you’ll need to be more careful than you would usually be about using heat protection. This is because silver hair shows damage more readily than other colors.

The color tawny is a warm golden brown and will complement warm and medium skin tones beautifully. The tawny color is also more interesting than a simple brunette since is has more dimension to it that causes it to reflect light differently. The cut is a simple bob that is chin-length with a tiny bit of layering involved – however, once coloring is done with it, it does elevate the cut a lot. For this look, some styling will be necessary, especially if you don’t have natural waves. When making asymmetrical cuts, the angles have to be precise because, here, everything is done proportionally. The difference from back to front is noticeable yet still mild which allows for a more contemporary appearance and avoids making this a statement cut every day. The dark black color here is a bold and unorthodox choice for women over fifty and will not suit everyone. For those with a pale complexion, it can be extremely harsh, and for those with gray hairs, it will become very apparent how the color you chose to dye your hair contrasts with the color of your hair as it grows out. However, as we see here, it is very difficult to achieve this strong contrast with lighter shades and, when done correctly, it is even more difficult with hair that is naturally smooth and straight which is ideal for an asymmetrical cut. This is because if the hair has any waves or frizz, there will be constant battle with the hair and it could be better to have a different hairstyle.
#26 A Textured Bob with Quiet Confidence
One of the most superb compliments a chop can receive is just getting out of the way and this cut does that flawlessly. The waves are nicely spread out, the length is done well and the overall vibe is someone with great hair that is not seeking attention. This haircut will suit fine to medium hair texture. It will hold a nice shape because there is enough internal texture to keep it from looking flat, but not so many layers that the ends look thin. Should you want to do a soft balayage, it will be a natural companion to this cut and will bring a bit more dimension to it. A few lighter pieces through the front will capture the light, and create more visual interest. The haircut will look nice even with a solid color, it doesn’t always need to be multitonal.

For heart shaped faces, the volume is at the right point, so it balances and compliments the wider forehead without competing.

A chin-length bob paired with chin-length bangs will compress features, making people feel as though they look shorter than their actual height, or short in stature. These bangs are long enough to avoid that effect, they rest just above the eyebrows, and blend with the layers around the temples to merge everything together rather than having distinct, separated sections. The rest of the internal texture looks great and creates an effortless lived-in appearance that works when styled or just left to dry naturally. The color looks beautiful providing warm depth and good visual weight especially on finer hair. I have to say though, with bangs this short, you’ll need to keep up with frequent trims. If you don’t want your bangs in your eyes, three-week maintenance sessions are a must and you’ll need to do that for the rest of your hair if you don’t want these bangs sitting on your lashes.

Starting with the chin-level bob, it is reliable and sturdy, and I mean that in the best way possible. The warm brown color is easy to pull off and the waves soften the color a bit. The cut also has the layers to keep the ends from being too heavy and dense. It isn’t overly complicated or exciting, but it gives you a polished look on a day when you don’t feel like really doing your hair. If your hair is fine or medium, a mousse would be a good idea to keep your waves from falling by the end of the day, but everything else about the look is low effort and high reward.

The crown volume finishes this look, and with fine straight hair, that doesn’t just happen. There is likely some layering at the top for volume, or she’s doing some round-brush blow-drying at the roots, or probably both. That crown volume does for your hair what a little heel does for your posture – it lifts everything up and alters the proportions overall. The silver is cleans and well-maintained, with no yellow tones dragging it down, and the straight hair keeps the look more defined. This is a simple recommendation for oval and heart-shaped faces. With this style, you’ll need volumizing products at the roots to keep the lift between washes, especially if your hair is fine and tends to go flat by the end of the day.

Most people don’t appreciate the intention behind this slightly messy style. The layered framing is also very subtle and meant to show the structure without making it look like this style has added pieces. Both of those styles would be really great for this cut. This style may be a bit more challenging for people with really fine hair to hold that same fullness, so we would want to have a discussion about what adaptations would keep the spirit of this cut if that is your texture.

The bangs and ends of the hair appear soft and feathery. Instead of a blunt and straight cut line, an airiness is created to the haircut with lighter ends. The waves almost feel so soft and natural that it’s almost as if her hair does naturally dry like that, which might be the biggest compliment you can give someone with wavy hair. The chin-length hair sits just below the cheekbone, and the waves are gentle and cause an outward movement at the tips. This means that the style’s widest point is at the same place as the widest point of the face which is very flattering for oval or round face shapes. Fine hair has just the right amount of lightness here, as compared to hair that is more dense. Each wave needs some product to be molded, though, because if not, your hair will probably be a little wavier than is desired, but will look wavy. In this case, the effort is genuinely very minimal.

This cut’s definition is in its sleekness, and I always prefer seeing someone go for the smooth and polished look, as opposed to trying to add texture where it’s unnecessary. The bangs are soft and face framing, as opposed to being blunt and harsh, which makes it all the more approachable. Fuller hair like this makes it easy for the style to just hold itself. The density provides all the thickness that finer-haired clients strive to get, so if you have the density, you’ll be rewarded with this cut. The rich dark color is shiny and healthy, and it compliments a lot of different skin tones. To keep it this sleek does require some work, and part of your routine will be a smoothing serum, and good blow dry or flat iron.
#35 Blunt Bangs on a Clean Chin-Length Line
I value the people I talk off the ledge, and I appreciate that blunt bangs are a significant commitment. When the bangs do work, as is the case here, the result is polished, youthful and a touch bold. But the bangs really need to be trimmed regularly, and cut to suit your face in terms of length and density, and then there is the issue of constant trimming. The cut is combined with a sleek, structured bob that is minimally layered, so the two strong lines of the bangs and the chin-length perimeter create a quite strong graphical frame around the face. This works very well for oval and heart face shapes because it draws focus to the eyes and helps to balance all the proportions. However, a lot of horizontal line can work against you, particularly if your face is on the rounder or shorter side. In those situations, I would recommend a softer fringe or even a side-swept one instead.

The blending kn the layers is so good, you could almost miss it, but this is what brings the cut to life. For fine to medium hair, this type of layering is best because it creates movement from within while keeping the outside structure intact. This gives you volume that is natural looking rather than over the top. The warm color is best for mature skin because it has the look of a natural color that’s been taken care of really well, which is more flattering than a color that looks fake. This will round and oval faces. For very thick hair, this same cut will need some weight removed from the underneath to avoid it looking puffy instead of voluminous. Because of this, it is best for the lighter end of the density spectrum.

The level of bounciness you can achieve with a round brush and blow dryer is fine to medium hair is something that is one of those cuts that takes less time than you’d expect. The bounce in your hair relies on its level of texture as most hair doesn’t just maintain it, so achieving it takes a bit of work, but it will be worth it.

Get a load of this haircut! It’s really nice to see this haircut finding its place. A well cut bob with bangs, and good color is well, something to show off. Bangs should always be light and piece-y. Thick and blunt bangs are never desired. This is almost always correct for fine to medium hair. This is because heavy bangs on thin hair expose the gap between your goal and what your hair is capable of. Layers add shape and are visually interesting without a lot of maintenance. The overall shape is forgiving and will stay looking good even when a lot of time has passed since it was cut. Once again, the natural color of the hair keeps the focus on the style instead of competing with it. Oval and heart shaped are the desirable face shapes.

It won’t create an edge, which helps the bob look softer and more versatile around the neck and jaw. This bob is chin-length and is perfectly layered with a great technique that makes it look light and airy while also keeping its shape.
