Caramel balayage has quickly gained traction among people, and I, for one, love this trend! For years, I have had people walk through my doors and say, “I want something warm but not too crazy,” and for the past 8 years, 10 out of 10 people leave with a caramel balayage and not only do they get the warm look that they asked for, but they also look expensive. Most people think of caramel balayage as one look, but in reality, it is 50 different looks and what really sets one apart from the others is the colorist’s ability to pinpoint exactly where in your brown needs to be warmer. I had a client last fall who I will always remember because she was box-dyeing her hair the same ugly brown for 10 years and she was terrified of lightener so when we did a very conservative caramel balayage she was surprisingly shocked. She ended up crying in the chair, but not because she thought it was too much, but because it so good and transformed her hair.
This technique requires looking at the situation from a different perspective. To not just add a few highlights to someone’s brown hair and expect it to look good. It takes an understanding of the individual base, where the natural light hits, and how to paint to create the illusion. Some can be very bold, others a very light touch, and the best ones create the look of just having returned from a tropical vacation rather than sitting in a salon chair for 3 hours. I will take you through a few of my personal favorites.
#1: Long Wavy Caramel Balayage That Just Flows
Balayage is meant to look like this. The roots are darker but transition seamlessly to gorgeous golden caramel highlights that look great with movement. The haircut is a huge part of this look, and I’m pretty sure it won’t look the same with blunt cut ends, so if you’re thinking about it, definitely talk to your stylist about some face framing layers to really pull it together. The waves are soft and open like the look from a curling iron where not all the hair is curled and it’s not too fussy with the sections. If you have an appointment for highlights coming up and need some shine in between, a good serum and shine product is a must.
#2 Textured Waves with That Perfect Warm Caramel
I always find it admirable when people who have a bit of a natural wave in their hair because it shows more natural texture and makes the balayage look a lot less done than it does on people who have pin-straight hair, which has to take a lot more work. The warmth in this color pull is really good, it’s not going too orange and not too ashy because it’s in the sweet spot of warm. Honestly, if your hair has any type of wave or bend, this means your styling time is pretty close to zero, which is ultimately the whole idea.
#3: Sun-Drenched Caramel on Long Beachy Waves
From this image, she appears to reside somewhere along the coast and just happens to have hair perfection. That’s a huge compliment for a balayage, meaning the colorist killed it. With this density, it works for her, and thicker hair will hold these kinds of waves with more body. The caramel pieces have room to breathe and show up individually instead of all blending into one block of color. If you want this vibe but your hair is on the finer side, don’t panic, but just know that your stylist will have to concentrate the lighter pieces differently to achieve a similar effect. Fair warning though, that beachy texture needs a sea salt spray or it’s just not going to happen.
#4: Full-Bodied Caramel Waves with Serious Dimension
The amount of hair here is borderline ridiculous (in the best way possible). That kind of thick, full hair is the dream of every colorist, because you can go to town on dimensional placement and know it’s going to show up beautifully. What I enjoy about this balayage is the way the dark root stretches well beyond the caramel, which creates the depth to keep the whole look from going washed out. This isn’t an all-over highlights situation; it’s very deliberate, and looks expensive because of it. If you have this kind of density, consider yourself lucky, but do not skip on your deep conditioner because thick, processed hair gets thirsty fast.
#5: Shoulder-Length Caramel Balayage That Keeps It Easy
I get that growing your hair long can be a pain, plus this amount of hair is much easier to manage, and the balayage is really nice! The waves look soft and effortless like she just scrunched it a bit after diffusing and just left it, and that’s the kind of vibe energy I want all of my clients to have. The caramel tone is reading more honey than golden, which is perfect if you have a warm skin tone. This is the look I recommend for anyone who tells me they have exactly twelve minutes to do their hair in the morning and not a second more.
#6: Layered Caramel Balayage with That Warm Glow
The cut helps the caramel color shine because the caramel has different tones. Each layer catches the light in a different way, creating a warm, multi-dimensional appearance. It gives an illusion of a more complicated look, which is my favorite type of hair magic. If you have medium to thick hair and want to go warmer, screenshot this and you can bring it in. I recommend having a sulfate free, color safe shampoo to keep the tones from becoming brassy. This can make you invest less in your appointments.
#7: Dark-to-Light Caramel Balayage on Long Waves
I can tell you have a good colorist, and your hair looks amazing. The root color is so rich, and the transition into the caramel color is so subtle. The waves are also so nice and add a lot to the look. If you have a straight hair, there would not be as much of the movement and reflectance as there is with this hair. This looks really good if you have a heart shaped face because the waves open right around the jawline. I don’t often say this, but I think this style suits almost everyone.
#8: Caramel Balayage Curls with a Little Something Extra
I love these curls! They look amazing! I really appreciate a nice caramel highlight, but it has to look balanced, and really weave through each curl for each dimension to really stand out. The accessory is a good call, I appreciate that she went for it, sometimes to sell the whole look you really just have to go for it. With big curls this big and color this bright, you are definitely going to want to do some upkeep because bright colors fade way quicker on curls, but it is for sure going to be worth it!
#9: Sleek Caramel Balayage on Smooth, Straight Layers
You don’t even need a single wave in your hair to see the results of a caramel balayage and these straight and smooth layers prove it. With the layers acting like a canvas, the caramel tones are applied in such a precise manner that it creates an airbrushed effect. For those of you with finer hair, this should be your reference photo because it shows what is possible when a colorist actually respects the texture of your hair and doesn’t try to force it into a different shape. A deep conditioning treatment will keep the layers looking smooth and reflective and that is really where the impact of the whole look comes from.
#10: Caramel Waves with Gorgeous End-Heavy Highlights
I love how the caramel color is mostly concentrated at the ends with only a few pieces pulled higher. It creates a nice graduated look that gives warmth without competing with her darker base. It’s that kind of balayage that looks super natural in a pony and just as gorgeous worn down, which is the dual-purpose dream. The waves are nice and loose and not too done. It all feels relaxed and intentional at the same time. With a good color-safe conditioner, looks like this mean you can stretch your appointments way longer than you think.
#11: Bouncy Caramel Balayage with a Soft Root Melt
I have to say this root melt is good! So good I zoomed in on it! I admit I’m a little nerdy about this stuff, but I also know that this transition area is where most balayage jobs succeed or fail, and this one absolutely succeeds. The waves have a beautiful bounce that really only comes from great hydration and sufficient density. It really warms up her complexion in a great way. When going this light on the ends, please please please listen. Those lighter pieces need some moisture. Seriously. Use a leave in, use an oil, use whatever you like! Just do something because dry caramel ends look like straw and nobody wants that.
#12: Shoulder-Length Caramel That Looks Like Actual Sunlight
I really like this simple design. The work looks like a sun and not a human with a brush and some lightener. I respect the understanding of placement. The color and texture work to give a quality that is not achievable with foils. This is free hand painting at its finest. For those with finer hair who need a little more, this mid-length concentration of caramel pieces visually enhances the thickness so much that you won’t need any volumizing products. The colour does the work.
#13: Medium Waves with a Fresh Caramel Glow
The color gradation from a dark brown root to a nice warm caramel is brightening without being overwhelming- which is something a lot of balayages fail to achieve. The practical medium length is nice and combined with the waves this is the sort of style that looks good at all times, whether freshly blow dried or 4 days dry shamp. For thinner hair this would not be ideal since the balayage does not have enough substance to really showcase the tonal variations, but if you have medium to thick hair go crazy!
#14: Warm Caramel Balayage with Easy, Undone Texture

The picture looks nice and I imagine the hairstyle is also nice even when you are standing in line at the grocery store. The colors in the hair are nice. The hair can look cool or warm with the caramel colour and it is nice. If you want to spend money on a colour, but don’t want people to think you have this is the look.
#15: Long Layered Caramel Balayage with Defined Movement
This look is proof that layers and balayage look great together. Each layer in this style picks up a different shade of caramel, creating a waterfall effect that I’m obsessed with. The curls are a little more defined to show off the color placement, but they’re not so tight that they look too formal, which keeps it current and comfortable. If you have long thick hair and you’re worried about it looking heavy or one-dimensional, THIS is the answer. The layers take care of the weight and the balayage provides the dimension, giving your hair a whole new personality.
#16: Soft Curled Caramel Balayage at the Perfect Length
I get asked to do this look with mid-length soft curled layered hair all the time, and I get super excited every time because this look is so versatile and so easy to achieve on every hair type. And I think it’s important to note that with layered hair, this style almost always looks good, especially compared to my clients who bring in photos of the latest hairstyles. When styling this look I’ve placed the balayage highlights with the curl pattern. This allows pieces that are curled to catch and release light, giving a natural glow to the hair as it moves. The warmth of the highlights is well balanced in a polished way that isn’t overly complicated. This way it looks like it took less than an hour, which, in my opinion, is the whole reason to go to a great stylist.
