I imagined that a bubble bob was a reference to an aunt’s hair style from 1987 with stiff shellacked layers. Thankfully, bubble bobs are much more interesting than that. What I love most about this haircut is that it works for women over 60 because it consists of an internal structure that builds volume from the inside of the hair. Hair with this type of structure will maintain its shape while not looking overdone. The rounded shape hugs the head and has a polished look while still providing a bounciness that may be lacking with finer or thinning hair.
A couple of years ago I had a client who had long layers since her forties. She came in wanting ‘something’ and that was all she said. We decided to go with a bubble bob and two days later she was calling me from a restaurant bathroom. Three women had stopped her to ask about her hair and she was so excited to tell me that. Although not every haircut creates that type of a response, people can sense when there is a positive change to someone’s look even if they cannot articulate what it is. The cut is so adaptable that I can use it on any hair type and face shape. Let’s go through some styles and find the one that attracts you the most!

#1: Rich Auburn with Soft Texture Through the Ends
The auburn is a great color when paired with her face as it provides warmth. It will also add some color to the skin of people who may not have as much of their natural glow, and want to have a more tanned look. The layers are just enough to create waves in the ends, which will create a lot of movement to the hair without her having to do anything. I think this style is most appropriate for finer hair because if you have been frustrated with cuts where the hair is just left to sit flat, this is a great example of the opposite. The cut will require a bit of work as it won’t just happen without the use of a round brush to style it.

#2 Clean Lines and a Gentle Inward Turn
An impeccably done blunt perimeter with gentle curves is so polished and sophisticated. Although it may appear easy, there is an incredible amount of detail, with the graduated layers at the crown doing a lot of the work. I especially love this on women with glasses, as the chin-length haircut offers amazing face framing without too much distraction. The root smudge is also super functional as it means you have a few weeks of grow out before your next color appointment. Just a heads up, though, if you want to maintain that inward curve, you’re going to need to put in some round brushing or flat ironing effort each morning, so if you prefer the towel-dry-and-go look, just keep that in mind!

#3 Copper with a Lifted Crown and Feathered Ends
The cowlick at the crown that makes this style interesting. Instead of fighting the hair’s natural texture and direction, embrace the lift at the crown and it will give the style more volume. The ends are feathered to reduce the weight and avoid the helmet look. The copper color is stunning. Instead of a cheap brassy orange, this is a natural warm copper. To finish, a cream styler is all that is needed. If you don’t want to emphasize the texture at the ends, be prepared for some rogue fly-aways.

#4 Silver-Lifted with a Soft Side Sweep
Every aspect of this nn The silver lift blends with the new natural growth, and the side sweep adds character without being too much. This look would suit someone with fine to medium hair wanting more volume without the hassle of blow-drying. The internal graduation at the crown balances the shape and creates a pocket of volume, so it’s great even on days when you wake up and it’s disheveled. Some light product to keep the movement will be ideal, and I’d steer clear of this shape if your hair is very coarse or tightly curled, it’s designed for hair that behaves.

#5 Jaw-Length with Root-Shadow Babylights
My personal favorite is the longer face-framing pieces. It may look small, but for people with hollowing temples it makes a big difference, especially since hollowing temples is pretty common but rarely talked about. The stacked back is what adds structure to this cut, and the point cut ends create that inward turn that finishes off the shape. The babylights and root shadow add just the right amount of depth and grey blending so it looks intentional. This is the type of cut that will definitely need product in it every day, so if that sounds like a bit too much to you, it’s probably not the right choice.

#6 Strawberry Blonde with Rounded Fullness
When a cut makes a face look softer I appreciate it, and this one does the trick. The micro layers around the face are so subtle, they’re nearly undetectable, but are effective for breaking up a solid line that could be heavy at the jaw. I find the strawberry blonde color very interesting and it sits right at the warm/cool middle which flatters a surprisingly large amount of skin tones. The bangs are a little longer on the left side which is a small detail I appreciate that elevates a good cut to a great one. Should you go this way, I would suggest a texturing paste to create that separated peicy look at the ends.

#7 Copper with a Micro-Fringe and Rounded Shape
The micro fringe will do something particularly precise, it will lift the brows and open the eyes in a way that not even longer bangs will do that. **Generally speaking, I’d say women tend to be a bit more apprehensive with going this short with a fringe, but when it works, it really works**. **The shape of the bob is good and the internal graduation will keep everything sitting nice without looking too overdone.** Just a note, the fine ends with this kind of blunt outer line means you’d need to stay on top of your trims, which is very true. The copper will look lovely, but does mean maintenance. A gloss every few weeks will mean it’s never muddy, which is a good thing, because it will need it.

#8 Plush Auburn with a Soft Parted Fringe
The touchable and purposefully finishing and curved elastic gradation give the design fullness and a luxurious look, just as the name suggests. While the cowlick’s natural appearance is often used poorly by stylists to create volume at the crown, here, it is used to create an effect that should be achieved by a good stylist, but sadly is often not. I recommend it for anyone wanting to have a lot of hair, but do keep in mind that round brush blow drying will be necessary to maintain the curve, and the use of any styling cream will cause it to lose the shape.

#9 Rounded Dome Shape with a Face-Framing Sweep
I think the reason this look works is because it is clean and polished without being too much. The shape of the dome is very pretty, and the face framing sweep softens the look just enough so it isn’t harsh. The front cowlick is giving a bit more lift, and depending on how you cut the perimeter it can be a blessing or a curse so keep that in mind when getting it done. For flyaways, a smoothing glaze would be nice and the slide cut thinning has to be accurate because otherwise you will lose the shape completely.

#10 Curly Red with Defined Ringlets and Crown Lift
I appreciate the variety in the style you presented. I especially like how unique it is. The internal stacking is just adding organization and lift to the crown, while the curl pattern is doing most of the work. The ringlets are amazing, and the face framing pieces soften everything without losing the energy of the curls. Most importantly, you need to find someone who does precise dry cutting, because cutting curly hair this short when it’s wet is a huge risk. A diffuser is going to be your best friend here, and try not to pull or brush the curls out because that is when the frizz will take over.

#11 Chestnut with a Brow-Skimming Feathered Fringe
The feathery fringe looks beautiful; she bangs sit above the brows, and do not sit heavy on the forehead. Combined with a rounded shape and internal graduation, she bangs provide flattering fullness. The modern fullness is not so trendy that it will date quickly. The temple babylights are a lovely detail as they open the eyes. This is what I think about when placing color on anyone over 50. The cut is best on straight to slightly wavy hair. It will require daily root lift effort, so I would recommend investing in a root lift spray.

#12 Polished Rounded Bob with Root Dimension
A cut doesn’t have to be super technical to be good and this is a great example. The cut’s inner gradation gives lift where it’s needed, the blunt perimeter keeps it tidy, and the root shadow gives depth without the maintenance needed to upkeep the depth. It’s the kind of haircut that’s gives the ‘ I woke up like this’ vibe. You’ll just need a quick blow dry to get this look, not an ordeal that takes 20 minutes. If your hair is really thick, or super tightly curled, this may not be the shape you want it to be.

#13 Chestnut with a Wispy Fringe and Stacked Crown
The crown whorl gives you natural volume instead of having to create that with product. I prefer a cut that works with your hair instead of against it. The soft micro-fringe wisps the forehead (and doesn’t cover it completely) and the internal graduation keeps it full and rounded (without becoming bulky). The babylights focusing on depth instead of brightness is the right call for this color. You might need some daily root-lift styling but this will be easy to maintain overall.

#14 Chocolate Brown with Face-Framing Babylights
The deep side part adds a touch of drama with the face framing babylights brightening it up where it flatters the most. There is a subtle hollow under the crown from the interior graduation that helps the top sit fuller when blow dried. This is one of those details that yields a significant difference in the finished shape versus what you would expect from the cut alone. The inward turn at the ends is classic bubble bob and reads very polished. I’d say this one asks a bit more of you in terms of daily shaping, so it suits someone who doesn’t mind spending a few minutes with their round brush each morning.

#15 Short Ear-Length with a Stacked Crown
Losing that much hair takes a lot of guts, but when it’s done right, it feels great. The stacked crown gives your hair the height it needs, while the point-cut ends keep the shape more airy than blocky. I think side-swept bangs are a nice touch. Graduated stacking is essential here because, without it, this length can look really flat on fine hair. If your grey is coming in at the temples, some lowlights would blend it while still letting some grey show. To keep it looking intentional, you’ll need to do a root lift every day and use some light styling products.

#16 Ash-Blonde with a Curtain Fringe
Curtain fringes are really trending at the moment, but I think that this is one of the best examples I’ve seen on a bubble bob. The way it ‘separates’ and ‘falls’ off to either side of the face creates that framing effect which really softens the look, and keeps it from feeling too fussy. Ash-blonde and pearl-grey are such a great colour choice for blending to grey as it makes regrowth look intentional when transitioning to grey. I always find it great to use a crown cowlick for that natural volume. Keeping the ash tones cool will mean toner maintenance, and some texturising at the nape is required to keep it from getting too bulky.

#17 Rounded Chin-Length with Micro Fringe
I love the tucked design on this piece! While it may look simple, there is actually a great amount of skill required to create an inward curve like this. The slide cut ends create the soft tuck, and the inner stacked graduation at the nape gives fullness at the back of the head to support the shape. The micro fringe is low maintenance and adds interest without taking too much from your morning routine, plus it provides a nice touch. The root shadow and babylights give great dimension without being loud. Daily shaping is required to maintain the clean look of the tuck and fringe so this isn’t a wash-and-go type of style.

#18 Rounded Bob with an Asymmetrical Detail
I almost missed this, but then I noticed the left side perimeter that is a little longer. It’s a small detail, but small details make cuts look modern, and can soften the cheeks area, while an even line would not. The micro fringe is very wispy and it covers the forehead without too much weight, and the low contrast blonde and grey roots blend so you don’t have to see your colorist every four weeks. Just know this will need a round brush blowout for the curved edge to keep it looking good, so if you want something that air dries nicely then this probably isn’t it.

#19 Voluminous Short Bob with Natural Fullness
The rounded appearance of the haircut is due to the reverse graduation at the nape. The internal stacking adds some volume to the area where most women in their sixties start to feel things deflate, and I like that it looks full without needing a lot of product. The face-framing layers suit her and the overall effect is just effortless. Almost like she woke up and her hair made the effort. In reality, this look comes from a large round brush blow dry along with a root smudge or lowlight to blend any regrowth and control flyaways.

#20 Pastel Peach with Feathered Bangs
Pastel peach is lovely and refreshing on someone over sixty and here, it works because the rounded shape and feathered bangs keep it soft and not too costume-y. Also, the internal graduation conceals slight thinning at the crown which is pragmatically beneficial and hides what looks like a purely playful choice. I should be truthful, this colour fades quickly and regular toner touch-ups and lots of conditioning will be necessary to keep your hair healthy under all that lightening.

#21 Maroon Root-Shadow with Micro-Layers
THIS COLOR HAS GREAT DEPTH AND RICH MAROON LOOKS AMAZING IN THIS PICTURE, BUT EVEN BETTER IN PERSON. THE ROOT SHADOW KEEPS IT GROUNDED AND ENSURES IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A SINGLE FLAT SHADE. ALL THE MICRO LAYERS AND INTERNAL GRADUATION CREATE A CROWN LIKE SHAPE WITH DEPTH AND LIFT. THE SOFT MICRO BANG IS A GREAT TOUCH THAT FLATTERS THE LOOK. IF YOU LIKE COLORS IN THE RED FAMILY, JUST BE AWARE THEY REQUIRE THE MOST MAINTENANCE. A COLOR GLAZE BETWEEN APPOINTMENTS ALSO HELPS TO KEEP IT VIBRANT.

#22 Copper with a Subtle Inward Turn
Thank you for your feedback on the latest Bubble Bob! The Reverse Graduation and Micro Layers work great together to provide the crown a nice lift while the ends assimilate and the collection frames the jaw beautifully. This haircut will give you a put-together look, no matter if you’re running errands or going to a dinner. The copper is warm and not too overwhelming, and the shape will stay good once you’re round brush skilled. A blowout is ideal for the inward roll so this is perfect for someone who likes heat styling. Don’t forget to use color care shampoo to keep the copper looking fresh between appointments.

#23 Rose-Gold Graduated Bob with a Side Sweep
Rose gold is one of those colors that looks better in theory than in practice, however, when it comes to this color, it looks more natural and not as forced. I love the graduated design with perimeter micro-beveling. It’s very cleanly designed and offers a nice touch of lift at the crown. It looks great and helps camouflage thinning at the temples, which a lot of women tend to ask me about and many aren’t aware that there is a structural solution for this. The color does brighten the skin which is a bonus! Realistically, this will require a daily round-brush blowout and frequent glossing to maintain the brassiness, so those are things to consider for your lifestyle.

#24 Warm Copper Rounded Bob with Feathered Side Bangs
The unique aspect of the cut is the bangs. They are light and soft enough to frame the face. The graduation from short to long at the nape with point cutting helps to provide lift which is essential for the shorter styles on fine to medium texture hair. The copper gloss is youthful but not in an obvious way. For when you show this image to your stylist, I would recommend asking for a stacked crown, soft layers around the face, and a root shadow that’s not very obvious. Be aware that copper gloss fades faster than most colors.

#25 Auburn with Face-Framing Feathered Bangs
The cut incorporates stacked back layering with micro-bangs. The bangs add some softness while the layers create a lift that effortless to shape. The root shadow with copper lowlights brings depth to the hair which is much more natural than a single process color. The bubble bob is a classic and reliable haircut. Just so you know, a round brush blowout is included.

#26 Side-Swept Fringe with a Stacked Nape
This would be my recommendation for a hassle-free and polished daily hairstyle. A side-swept fringe looks good on most people. The stacked nape adds volume at the back and is crucial for this shape. The angle of the weight-line is just about ideal for cheekbone framing. It’s a classic look for a reason! It works best with straight or wavy hair, and you’ll be looking at some daily blow-drying with a round brush, but once you master the technique, root touch-ups won’t take you long at all!

#27 Layered Bob with Waves That Move
The waves here are loose in a good way, almost like she just got out of the shower and scrunched her hair but perhaps that is actually what happened. Regardless, we can see the layers are cut for the texture to come alive. The length that hits just a little above the shoulder gives enough weight to behave without sacrificing the shape. Some of you with really fine hair may need a volumizing mousse to achieve this level of body. The highlights placed well add dimension without looking stripy, so kudos to the colorist.

#28 Modern Textured Bob with a Natural Grey Blend
I like how the grey blends with the overall shape of the cut, rather than it looking like the cut is being done to the hair. The slight layering is just enough to add some interest, and chin length is more practical since it’s long enough to tuck behind your ears on days you don’t feel like doing much. For bubble bob standards, this is pretty low maintenance. You’ll need regular trims to keep the layers defined, but you also won’t be spending a lot of time in between appointments worrying about it.

#29 Curly Bob with Silver Threading Through
These layers make the most of the heavy lifting done by the natural curls, and this is how a curly cut is supposed to work. The silver highlights sprinkled throughout the curls increase the texture by reflecting light at different angles, and the face-framing layers enhance the look without creating an obvious frame. This sits just above the shoulders, perfect for springy curly hair. A curl cream will give you the definition without the crunch.

#30 Feathered Curly Bob with Bounce
The curls are free to bounce and look super fluffy and voluminous, and the best part is that it looks like a ton of styling effort went into this look, but in reality it was super simple! I enjoy how the pattern remains visible while the curls are forming. You can see the bob shape through the curls. The ends reach that just right point above the shoulders, which is where curly hair tends to get the highest volume. If you want to avoid the layers blending in and losing some definition, regular maintenance will do the trick.

#31 Curly Bob with Soft Bangs and a Lot of Life
Bangs and curly hair always evoke a unique and playful vibe, which is what this style is all about. The grey tones throughout the hair display stunning texture and show that the client has accepted their natural color. The volume here is impressive given the fine hair, although this is partly a product of the hair’s curl pattern. Bangs are meant to be a bit fun and messy, though so be ready to put in some extra work to keep those curls from being too wild! A little curl gel applied to bangs while they’re damp will be your best friend for keeping them in check.

#32 Rounded Bob with a Soft Fringe
I can see that with this cut, the bangs draw the attention to her eyes and away from the forehead and jaw, which is what a good fringe should do. The rounded shape works well for versatile lengths, whether you’re dressed up or dressed down. The natural texture gets elevation with the soft layers, but isn’t overly layered. It’s clean and classic, and elegance, without the need for constant styling. It will always look fresh after regular trims, and is forgiving in between trims.

#33 Textured Bob with Warmth and Movement
The warm chestnut color does so much of the work for this look. It brings added richness and depth for what could be a standard textured bob. When you add soft bangs and a bit of volume throughout the style, you get a look that feels polished without being too stiff. The length grazing the shoulders also adds to the overall lightness of the look. This cut is ideal for fine to medium hair because the layers offer the illusion of more hair than there actually is. A bit of root volumizing spray will keep the shape of the style all day.

#34 Silvery Bubble Bob That Frames the Jawline
Using the length to graze the jawline is an effective choice as it draws attention to the bone structure instead of hiding it. The rounded shape with the face-framing bangs gives fine hair volume where it usually falls limp. The silver shade has a shine that makes it look intentional and polished instead of just dull. The rounded shape is what gives this cut its uniqueness, so you’ll need to put in a fair amount of effort to keep styling it that way because it won’t just settle into that shape on its own.

#35 Stacked Bob with an Inward Curl at the Ends
This haircut’s unique trait is the very subtle inward curl. An outward curl would just make this a basic bob. The inward curl conveys purpose and adds movement to the style. The bangs are soft and fairly easy to grow out, plus the movement from the layers is ideal. She won’t have to deal with too little hair too many layers and the over-layered look. The overall density is also quite good. Some regular styling will be required to maintain the inward curl, so velcro rollers or a quick pass with your iron could be part of your daily routine.

#36 Silver Bob That Lets the Shape Do the Talking
This silver bubble bob stands out for how little it tries. The chin-skimming length is elongating, and the barely there layers add just the right amount of movement to prevent it looking like a wig. The silver hue is embraced rather than fought against or disguised. The texture of the hair works perfectly fine with medium density hair because the shape adds volume without the need for dense hair. Compared to a lot what we have seen, this is surprisingly low maintenance. You will want to book regular cuts to keep the line clean, but it’s not as heavy as other styles.

#37 Rounded Bob with a Warm Chestnut Glow
The rounded style snags light perfectly as it frames the face and brings out the warmth in the chestnut tones. The soft bangs are just the right weight for fine hair. They’re not too heavy to overwhelm, but they’re present enough to make a difference. This is the kind of style that looks killer in pictures, but is still fab IRL on a Tuesday arvo when you totally forgot to do your hair. Bangs do require a bit more upkeep than the rest of the cut, so keep that in mind when you book your next trim.

#38 Textured Bubble Bob with Curls and Movement
The curls are contributing to a lot with the rounded formations, softening what could have been an angular silhouette, and adding a volume that finer to medium hair usually does not provide on its own. The soft bangs integrate with the overall texture cohesively, as opposed to feeling like two separate choices made on one head. If you’re considering a shorter shape and have a naturally curly or wavy texture, this is a good reference for your stylist. Just remember that to keep curly bangs looking like this and avoid them doing their own thing, some daily effort will be necessary.

#39 Classic Rounded Bob with a Full, Smooth Silhouette
I think the bubble bob is executed extremely well in this case. It is a style that really can be what most people envision. The shape is very smooth and rounded. The bangs are soft, well blended, and the perfect amount of effort was used to make them look like they took no longer than 3/4 of a hour. For fine straight hair, this kind of internal grad is what provides thickness without the bulk. It does grow out and look less full, and yes, it does require maintenance to keep that shape.

#40 Silver Bob with Soft Layers and Shine
The glimmer is the first thing that grabs my attention, and that typically suggests a quality, restorative service. With the right maintenance, silver hair never appears dull and lifeless—and here, it’s gleaming. The long, silky layers are gorgeous and provide so much movement while still preserving the overall thickness. The length is above the shoulders, which allows a lot of versatility in styling. It’s sophisticated and lovely, and certainly doesn’t need to scream for attention.

#41 Soft Textured Bob with Bangs That Draw You In
These bangs really bring focus and highlight the look of the eyes. It’s perfect when looking for a style that is flattering, without being too bold. The soft layers give volume in all the right spots, and the shoulder length keeps it feeling fresh and not frumpy. This cut works best with straight or wavy hair, and the only maintenance is trimming the bangs every few weeks.

#42 Classic Rounded Bob in Rich Chestnut
This cut features a rich chestnut brown that flat and monotoned browns will lack. The blunt bang is bold, and paired with the round shape that sits above the shoulders creates a look with presence. This shape is best with fine to medium density hair as the smooth texture of the hair allows the bob to hold its line all day. The perimeter and bangs will be neatly defined, which is crucial with a blunt cut as rough and uneven ends are glaring. For this look to stay fresh, regular trims are needed.

#43 Sleek Blunt Bob with a Confident Fringe
Confidence comes from sporting a blunt-cut bob paired with full bangs. The bob is polished and chin-length which gives a clean and effortless look, even if it requires maintenance. A look like this takes a good flat iron and a steady hand. Bob haircuts are a meticulous style, so any bend or wave will show up immediately. The bangs serve a playful purpose to lessen the severity of the bangs. It strikes the ideal balance for women wanting a contemporary shape without going overly severe.

#44 Layered Bubble Bob with Soft Curls
My layered bob is appealing because of the soft/end curls which add warmth and ease to the styler. It gives the appearance of having been done with a very light touch and gives the kind of relaxed look that a lot of my clients request. The shoulder grazing length, and wispier ends also provide a lot of movement and soften the look, which is always very flattering to more maturing hair. This bob style is best for fine to medium hair as the layers will provide enough movement to look full without heavy density.

#45 Soft Textured Bob with Volume and Ease
I like how playful this cut is, it has the right amount of body to look like you put some effort into it but not enough to look overdone. Chin length gives it a good bounce and the subtle layers that frame the face are perfectly executed without being too obvious. This cut is ideal for fine to medium hair because the rounded shape offers volume from structure rather than depending on the thickness of the hair. Using a light hold product or some mousse will help maintain the shape.

#46 Curly Bob with Wispy Bangs and Natural Texture
I like how the soft bangs here don’t clash with the curls, they just seem to mesh. With chin length wavy hair, this length is ideal as it provides just enough weight to the curls to reduce frizz yet spring. The shape is so soft and appealing. It’s like she knows how to hair and has come to peace with it. The maintenance is more about control and definition of the curls than any structural determination.

#47 Silver Bubble Bob with Youthful Bounce
What makes the bob silver bob feel youthful (and not in a trying to look younger way) is the volume. The blunt cut at the chin is super flattering and the subtle layering at the back gives a soft silhouette that looks lovely from every angle. When it comes to styling, all that is needed is some lightweight mousse to add some texture. The shape is what makes silver hair easier to maintain, and if you are embracing the grey, then it is just about the shape. I should mention though that maintaining the silver colour does take some upkeep.

#48 Softly Textured Bob with Wispy Face-Framing
I think the wispy bits are extremely flattering and give this haircut a special feel compared to your average chin length bob. They break the line and soften the jaw, while also drawing attention to the eyes. Most of my clients want the delicate waves, and the texture that this style provides is just enough. To keep the waves looking their best, use some sea salt spray or a quick pass with a curling wand to ensure that the waves last.

#49 Curly Bubble Bob with Natural Bounce and Dimension
This bob looks different with curls than with straight hair because straight hair looks one-dimensional. Curls will give this cut way more bounce than just a basic blowout. Hair hitting just below the chin nicely frames the face, and the layers create movement that works with the curls instead of against them. The cut’s design is softened with the side part because it creates a little asymmetry in the shape. If your hair’s texture resembles this style, the daily upkeep will be effortless. Especially if you keep curls , and .

#50 Blunt Bob with a Soft Fringe That Flatters
This bob haircut is precise, and it is the fringe that gives it some character. The intentional oblique chin length is detail oriented and polished, and the fringe breaks up the harshness. The client’s fine to medium hair offers ideal density here without feeling weighed down, and the blunt cut being low maintenance means your only commitment is regular trims. This length and fringe placement is optimal for oval and heart face shapes.
