Last week a customer asked me if blunt bobs were too young for her and I couldn’t help but laugh because I found the question baffling. In fact, blunt bobs are one of those cuts that look better on women over 40 than on those in their 20s. I think this has to do with the way a clean and bold cut complements a more defined face and exudes a kind of confidence that a younger face may lack. On a younger face a bob can look a bit too soft.
I find it interesting how people view so many different styles in what is essentially one haircut. A blunt bob with bangs, a blunt bob without bangs, a blunt bob that is angled, a blunt bob that is asymmetrical, a blunt bob that is texturized, a blunt bob that is straight, a blunt bob that is silver, a blunt bob that is copper, a blunt bob that is lavender… Although they may look similar from the outside it can be a very different experience from the inside to wear each of those. Some of them I can put on almost anyone who sits in my chair, while others are much more targeted and selective, and I will share my thoughts on what fits that description as we go. For me, there is something about a blunt cut that makes my choice of color more important than most other styles, because the clean lines will show a poor tone.
#1: Silver Blunt Bob with Just Enough Layer to Keep It Interesting
This style is all about the shape and structure. The layers are just enough to shift the shape when she moves. The line is seamless and the weight is all on that blunt edge. It sits just above the shoulders, which is perfect because it leaves enough length to tuck behind the ears or push back and not be in the way. If your hair is fine to medium, you’ll feel like the cut is doing the work. The silver has a soft, healthy sheen which is more important than the colour because it shows the hair is well conditioned. Blunt cuts need to be maintained more than other cuts so you’ll be looking at trims every five to six weeks to keep that clean bottom edge. Once a blunt cut grows out unevenly, it becomes really obvious.
#2 Textured Blunt Bob That Actually Works on Fine Hair
People ask me about how to add some body to thin hair without chopping it, and I love answering this question with this technique! The texture we see here doesn’t come from having a lot of layers, rather, it comes from the way the ends are cut. So even though the hair is blunt at the bottom, the hair is not stagnant, it actually moves. The light blonde is very fresh and brightens up the face. It’s worth it! If you go this light you will definitely want to keep a good purple shampoo on hand to keep the brass at bay. I do this on oval and heart shaped faces best, but I’ve adapted versions of it for rounder faces as well, just with a bit less length taken off. That’s pretty rare to just wash and air dry.

The silver is really nice and glossy, which leads me to think either the gloss is just really good, or the hair is healthy underneath, or maybe both. My favorite part about this version is how the layers are kept inside the shape. I see movement, but I don’t see the architecture, which gives it an extra touch of class that other bob cuts don’t have. Ideal hair for this is fine to medium. If you have thick coarse hair and want to achieve this look, I will be very honest and say it’s going to require more daily effort than you are probably willing to give. The cut definitely shows that its elegance comes from simplicity, so the upkeep is really just about keeping the ends sharp and the color toned.
#4 Textured Silver Bob with Wispy Side-Swept Bangs
The bangs are the best part. Without the bangs, it would just be a decent bob, but the bangs completely change your whole look. They are just the right thickness to sit above the forehead, so they can blind you, but they do soften some of the sharp features and bring the attention more to the eyes. Overall, chin length is really flattering on most people, and for wider jaws like mine, I do recommend going a bit longer. This is the most basic style, so I recommend this one if you want something simple. Hair is straight, the line is straight and the layers are so slight that they mostly just stop it from looking like a helmet. It works. The silver tone here is a cool silver which is beautiful against light or pink skin, however, it may wash out darker skin tones, which is something to consider before going for it. It’s medium length, fine hair with little effort. The good thing about this style is that it looks like you just got back from the salon and in reality you really haven’t done much to it. The downside is that the color and cut needs a lot of maintenance because every little bit of growth is very obvious on a cut like this.
#6 Silver Blunt Bob with Textured Ends
The reason this looks different than the polished versions is the ends. There is a softness at the ends that removes the bluntness of the line, but still retains control throughout the shape. It sits just below the chin, my preferred length for heart and oval shapes because it focuses below the cheekbone and does not add width. The silver is nice and even and contrasts well with the light skin. If you’re torn between a sharp blunt bob and one with lots of movement, I would say this is the safe option. It’s forgiving enough to grow out a little without looking neglected, which buys you some time between appointments.
#7 Soft Blonde Blunt Cut with Face-Framing Layers
I appreciate your quiet feedback. I see there is a blunt cut on the ends, but it is not too harsh, and the face-framing front layers look soft and unintentional to a good degree. That is how layering should look. The way the mid-length hair has been cut gives you a lot of options whether you wear it down, half up, completely back, or even behind the ears; it all looks great. The color on the ends is soft and warm; not brassy, so you can tell the colorist knew what they were doing. It looks nice with fine to medium hair, but if you want to be able to just wash and go then I’d probably recommend something else.

I LOVE the look of lavender on silver and white hair. When it is done well, it looks almost accidental; like a light reflection. This is a perfect example of this. The color is muted so it feels easy to wear, but it is interesting enough to engage people. The cut is short and blunt, and with clean lines like this on fine, low-density hair, it creates an illusion of more volume. This is also a perfect choice for anyone thin hair. But the tradeoff with any fashion colors, even more muted, is that it fades. So you are going to want to pick up a color depositing conditioner to help extend your time between salon visits.
#10 Silver Blunt Bob with Soft Full Bangs
A blunt bob and full bangs can be a great style or a total disaster and most of the time it depends on your hair texture. For example, straight and fine hair is best because the bangs sit flat and will frame the eyes and cheeks, completing the look. The length is also a plus because it gives more styling options than a blunt bob would. I suggest a light serum that is shiny worked in through the hair in the middle and the ends because the ends will need it to get that reflective look and if you want a polished clean look on this style, your hair is going to need to be in good condition and well-moisturized. If your ends are dry and splitting make sure to and get a trim before you get this haircut.

You may have seen many variations of the silver blunt bob by now, and you may think they all look the same, but they don’t, and this is a perfect example of how small changes can create a different outcome. This specific version also has a different weight distribution and the subtle layers are meant to create movement in the mid lengths so it has a nice flowing quality that a lot of the other versions don’t have. The cut is very flattering on oval and heart shaped faces and the silver is toned beautifully, cool but not icy. If you are maintaining silver at home, you must tone it regularly. This color is one of those colors that looks amazing when it’s freshly done, but when it needs to be redone it looks terrible, there is very little middle ground.

The hair style I like the most is the asymmetrical bob. The way it is cut is able to change the shape of a face which a bob cut could never do. The way the front is cut longer provides a diagonal look which helps people with wider jaws or larger frontal foreheads. The cut also has texture which makes it a little more free and less robotically styled to counterbalance the concept of the asymmetry. It is best if the hair is medium density as they want enough hair to hold the style but not too much so it isn’t bulky on the shorter parts. This hair style will need to be trimmed more than a normal bob because it is based around the length and as hair grows out people will be able to see the shape and it will end up looking more like a bob than a asymmetrical bob.

This bob is nice and clean and pretty straightforward and blunt, which is sometimes what you want. No bangs, no wild layering, just a pretty blunt cut with a bit of texture at the ends so it doesn’t look dead. I never say this with every style, but this cut suits a lot of different shapes and sizes as well. The length makes it easy to manage day to day, and the silver is super healthy and shiny as well. I like this style on women who want to do something different but not too wild, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. A good blunt bob is like a good white shirt, it’s classic. Regular trims will be necessary to keep that line nice and sharp.
#14 Warm Copper Blunt Bob with Straight-Across Bangs
I would like to discuss it some more before a decision is made. The design is beautiful but very specific. The copper may be warm, vibrant, and gives a glow, but it is very risky for some skin tones. Also, the bangs will need to be color matched with the client as this could go wrong very quickly. I also love the bangs as they add to the modern feel of the cut. The bob really works on fine and medium hair as it makes the bangs sit nicely, and the bob itself holds its shape. For thick and coarse hair however, the bangs will require a lot of maintenance to keep them lying flat, and the blunt cut at the bottom will puff out a lot. If your hair can cooperate with this, it’ll be very striking, if not, we need to look at alternatives.

These bangs feel a little softer and are a little more feathered compared to the cuts where the bangs are fuller. This makes them seem more approachable and a little more forgiving. I also think they are a little more forgiving because they blend into the sides as opposed to sitting separate, which creates a softer transition around the face. In five years, you won’t look back at photos and cringe because this cut will never date itself. This is fine, straight, and medium density hair which is ideal. It sits and behaves well with minimal encouragement. Not much more needs to be said about it because not much should be said. It is pretty and it is a good choice. It will keep being a good choice if you keep up with your trims.
#17 Blunt Bob with Soft Lavender Tones
This example doesn’t require too much work, and neither does lavender. The color tone is much cooler and suggests more when it comes to blending. The base color looks modern and not overly costume-like. The color is channeled into the chin length cut, making it sleek and unfussy. The design is best suited for fine to medium hair because of the blunt line which holds shape without a lot of hair to support it. Very warm skin and cool toned colors can look disconnected, and that is something to think about before going in that direction. The color will fade and looks good as it does, which is not the case for every shade.
