As part of my school program, I have to do a few clients every week. A few weeks ago, I was looking through some old photos from when I first started. I found pictures from the first time I got to do a bixie cut on a client. I was so surprised seeing the trends that come back into style every few years. I was inspired to think even more about how versatile the bixie haircut actually is. The cut is right in the middle of a bob and a pixie. Clients get the thrill of going short while still having the comfort of knowing their stylist will probably only see them once every few months, so they won’t have to deal with the hassle of styling their hair a million different ways. I love recommending this cut to my clients who are looking to make a more dramatic change but are too nervous to get a full pixie.

If you’re on the fence about getting bangs, this is the style for you! It’s SO low commitment ⏤ just a round brush and a blow dry of the bangs and you’re good to go!
#4 That Reddish Brown Bixie That’s Been Living in My Head Rent Free
Let’s appreciate this COLOR. Capturing light even better than in photos this reddish brown shade is simply gorgeous. The cut is also doing all the right things with those layers and giving fullness where you want it, but the color is just the highlight. If you want to go warmer but you’re apprehensive about a crazy red, this is the shade. Some mousse to style the texture and that’s really all you need.
#5: Layered Bixie with That Sun-Kissed Root Contrast
This look reminds me of darker roots fading into lighter ends. So much depth without effort once you walk out of the salon. Her natural waves help a lot too since those layers create an effortless look. Let’s be honest though, this look is going to require a lot of maintenance as the layers grow out. I get that once it’s longer it can lose that intentional vibe really quickly, but when it’s fresh it’s stunning.
#6: A Bixie That Somehow Looks Polished AND Effortless

The volume at the top is achieved without adding too much bulk at the bottom, and careful looseness is a sign of confidence. I know this style isn’t for everyone and that’s what makes it so amazing! If you feel even slightly drawn to this picture, it’s safe to say you’re definitely one of my people. The pastel pink and bright yellow is literally so fun, and the choppy layers definitely add a pretty punk touch! Having fashion colors like this will be a **part-time job** to maintain. You’ll need to use color-defending products, cool water for rinsing, and touch-ups more often than you’d like. But, if you love a bold look and you tend to get bored with your hair, you’re going to love this look. You’ll enjoy it every single time you see it in the mirror!
#9: Short Tousled Bixie with All the Volume
You don’t have to give up length for shorter hair! This cut shows how balanced length can be achieved! The layers on top mean you get structure and elevation without having to straighten the hair. I suggest this type of cut most because it works for low maintenance and high maintenance looks. You can just run errands in it and maybe go out for dinner and it’ll be great. You can even dress it up and make it more sophisticated. Just add some volumizing powder to the roots and you’ve achieved the playful look!

I love the vibes of this look; it looks like your life is totally put together! The highlights are placed soooo perfectly! And that cut is so sleek and finishes so well! For straight hair, styling should be easy because blow drying it is all you’ll have to do. If you keep up with trims, this will definitely be a high-low maintenance cut!

I love the soft fringe and think it’s super flattering. It also complements nearly all face shapes. I love the slight wave in the texture of the hair. It looks natural and lived-in, and I think that’s really cool. The entire haircut looks effortless. You know that moment when someone turns their head and their hair swooshes? That’s what this haircut achieves. You do have to style it a little bit to achieve the faux bedhead. This hairstyle also looks better with an undone look, which is a win in my books.
#13: Lavender Bixie That’s Making Me Want to Change My Own Hair
I want to get lavender hair looking at this picture, which is a HUGE impulse that I know I shouldn’t act on. The placement of color at the roots for contrast, then blended soft and light is very skillful. The cut is modern overall and the back is a little shorter which gives it some edge without being too drastic. There’s not a lie in saying lavender hair is high maintenance and fades FAST. You’ll want to become best friends with some purple shampoo and will need touch ups every few weeks. But while it’s fresh, the maintenance is absolutely worth it! The lavender is a great choice.

The warm blonde highlights look great because they catch the light beautifully and make the whole cut look more dimensional than it would look with a single process. The gentle waves make it look like a beach. I like how the layering around the ears gives an adorable silhouette. Most don’t consider this, but you walk away from people too! The waves might need a little wave spray and a curling wand, but it’s nothing complicated.

I mean this in the best way possible: your highlights look real! Many highlights look super fake, however, yours are more natural-looking. The highlights appear to have natural color variation and movement, which makes the entire haircut look more high-end. The face-framing layers are also lovely and soft in a way that’s balanced and not too extra. For my friends with fine hair, I suggest a bit of volumizing mousse while it’s damp, otherwise hair tends to fall flat with a cut like this. But that’s an easy fix.

The best thing about the cut is the balayage technique; you won’t have to stress about roots in a few weeks! Also, the color makes the layers look rich and gives them depth. The soft layers really help avoid that ‘helmet’ look, which is my biggest concern with shorter cuts and this one really meets the standard. It still has polished personality to it. Regular trims will keep the shape and prevent the cut from looking unintentional.

You’re right, that burgundy color is beautiful combined with the feathered layers! The color changes as the hair moves, which is such a nice touch. I also love it. With the worry of looking stringy, feathered layers bring some life to finer hair. For this hairstyle, the bangs are a final touch. Get ready for this hairstyle because it’s going to get a LOT of compliments!
#18: Feathered Layer Bixie for the “I Don’t Try Too Hard” Look
This hairstyle has a beautiful and lightweight look due to the feathery layered cut. While floaty isn’t an actual hairstyle term it captures the essence perfectly. Everything about this hair cut feels light and effortless. The blow dry, the form and the whole appearance is wonderful. The face framing layers are particularly flattering. The lengths of the hair preserve the look of having lots of hair, but also shows that a bold choice was made with this haircut. One thing to keep in mind is that layered feathery haircuts are a little more work, so plan to book trims every 5-6 weeks. Otherwise it’ll go from that good, intentional, mega textured look to a not so great, I need a haircut look very quickly.
#19: Pink-Tipped Bixie with Dark Root Contrast
I absolutely love the dark to pink color transition; it’s beautiful! This is even more true on a bixie cut because the color choice and cut are both very bold and they compliment each other so well. In addition to the color shift, the layered angled textured pieces add a lot because you can see the dark and pink tones all together when the pieces are layered and overlap. I especially love this for someone who wants to do something fun and experimental with color without having to do a full bleach. Dark healthy roots will pair really nice with the bright pink color. Just a heads up that the pink will fade, and you’ll end up with a cute peachy color instead. To keep it looking fun and bright, you will need a color depositing conditioner to keep it bright in between appointments.
#20: Asymmetrical Bixie with Natural Wave Action
I enjoy asymmetrical cuts, and this one does the trick without being too far to the side, which prompts the viewer to think that it’s misaligned. The angle creates a shapely look, and it leaves the hair long enough in one section to be very flattering. The length in the front gives me life and the waves created by the natural hairstyle don’t frustrate me as I typically have to preserve my clients from damage caused by hot hair styling tools and techniques. The deep brunette color enhances the hair cut by creating a greater visibility of texture while also masking the color variation. With second day hair, some product will be needed to add definition to the waves, but it will give you a carefree look. It will also be super easy to style right after a shower.
#21: Highlighted Bixie with Soft Natural Movement
I really like the highlights because they go WITH the natural wave pattern instead of against it. Each time the hair turns, there is a little flash of lighter color which makes it beautiful and wavy. The layers are meant to provide more movement to the hair like with the good cutting is working WITH it instead of against it. If you have thicker hair, this cut might need reshaping a lot more due to the hair building up in places due to the added volume. On the other hand, if you have fine to medium hair, this cut will be easy to live with.

I love this versatile cut. No matter the occasion, whether it be a job, weekend, or something in between, this cut is perfect. You can wear it in a lot of different ways. On days when you don’t want to style your hair and just let it go, it will look great. On days when you style your hair, it will also look great. The feathered layers, which elegantly hit the jawline, help frame and draw attention to your face in a flattering way. I love how sleek and modern this cut is and it looks like you don’t have to do much to your hair to make it look great. It creates the illusion that your amazing hair is just natural. One thing to watch for is how precise the shape of the cut is. As it grows out, it’s going to lose that shape pretty quickly.
#23: Sharp-Edged Bixie for My “Less is More” Girls
The unique border graphics give it a refined and elegant look. It doesn’t always have to be messy and clean styles with sharp lines can be the most striking in the space. Subtle layering is a great way to incorporate movement without losing the flowy look you may be wanting with the distinct borders. This is going to work great for you with straight hair and I’ll actually recommend going for the fullness and not trying to create any waves. A smoothing serum at the ends will give a perfectly polished touch.
#24: Voluminous Textured Bixie with Those Perfect Sweeping Bangs
These side bangs are amazing! They bring a fun and flirty touch to the haircut, something I really enjoy. The combination of varying lengths gives the hair a lot of volume and the texture is spot on. Front bangs add the touch of messiness needed to be ideal, and they look amazing. This haircut still has a safe feel, but has a totally different vibe than longer cuts. This bixie is a great style to show someone who hasn’t had hair this short before. This cut will look amazing with everyday styling, but will also look great on days when you don’t feel like doing much, and that’s a real sign of a good haircut!
#25: Tousled Bixie with a Lived-In Vibe
What stands out the most with this style is how lived-in it looks. It doesn’t look like she just stepped out of the salon, but rather that she’s been wearing this hairstyle for weeks, and yet still looks fantastic. This tells me she has a solid foundation for this style. The fine, wispy strands give a softness that keeps the style girly and the volume at the crown is nice and balanced so it doesn’t look top-heavy. If you want a hairstyle that looks effortlessly stylish, then this is the best contender. It will look even better with a bit of texture, in that “I didn’t try” way.
#26: Blonde Layered Bixie with Beautiful Dimension
This blonde blending is stunning! The various shades of blonde woven into the strands offer a lot of visual interest and depth to the cut. The length is great just above the nape, and the added layers ensured that it’s not flat and boring. I really like this on my blonde clients who do not want to go shorter because the color changes prevent it from looking like a solid block of hair. The blonde contrasts are still allowed to show through. This cut will definitely need to be kept up, but the maintenance will be worth it because there is already color variation.
#27: Tapered Back Bixie with Volume Where It Matters
The blend in the back that turns into a longer top is a really nice feature because it gives a polished, short look from the back while having enough length on top to style in a variety of ways. The long fun layers add volume to the top and crown and then all the layers taper to avoid bulk at the nape, which is nice. This shape is one of my favorites and I recommend it a lot because it goes well with any outfit, even a t-shirt. A little dry texture spray on the top layers and you’re good to go.

Everything has a super light, airy feeling to it. The layers flow into the nape beautifully. The barely-there lavender that shifts the whole vibe of the thing? It really adds to it! It’s the sort of shade that makes people say, “Did you do something different?” rather than “Oh you dyed your hair.” That sort of subtlety is the best. The lightweight texture works perfectly for fine hair too. It creates that layered volume without the need for that density, which is typically the reliance issue. I say this with every pastel or fashion color, but the only thing I would say is the color will need to be refreshed more than a natural color. But for how nice it looks, it’s totally worth it!
#29: Curly Textured Bixie, AKA the Most Fun Cut on This List
How under appreciated are bixies on curly and wavy hair? This cut really shows how amazing texture and shorter lengths work together. You get so much natural volume and movement. The jawline hitting curls are so good, and this whole look just has a vibe that makes you SMILE. No cap though, curly bixies need a stylist who knows their curls. If someone cuts your hair who doesn’t focus on texture, you are gonna have a bad time. A curl defining mousse is gonna be your bff for those bouncy, separated curls!
#30: Curly Bixie with Warm Highlights That Just GLOW
This is a great final shot! Look at how soft and defined the curls are. The warm highlights woven through the curls give a beautiful glowing effect. With this cut and color, you can tell how the stylist considered how color moves differently on straight and curly hair. The mid length will give the curls more to work with and not be weighed down as much. The refresh on your curl definition every wash day will be a trade off. But with results like this, it is totally worth it.
