No one ever warns you about the personality a bixie cut comes with. It’s not a cut that you just sit back and relax with, it has opinions on what it’s doing and how it’s being portrayed. A few years ago I had a client who was super reserved, and would always wear her hair long and it was flat ironed and overly straightened. One day she came in and it looked like she had been crying and didn’t talk about it. All she said was, “cut it off.” So, I gave her a bixie cut with some choppy layers in the crown and when I turned her to see the mirror, she laughed so hard that she startled the lady next to her. She said it was the first time her hair looked like the version of herself that she had been hiding. That’s what a good bixie cut does. A good bixie cut is the perfect combination of a bob and a pixie and gives you so much to work with. The layers are what does the most work when giving a hairstyle volume and movement, but the real magic is how the cut just falls and frames your face. Depending on your hair and the color, texture, and styling, that is what will really determine how your bixie cut is going to look. That’s why it’s one of my favorite cuts to work on because there’s so much I can do with it.
#1: Warm Caramel Bixie with That Effortless Texture
This style gives off that “I woke up and my hair did this” look, which is super hard to recreate intentionally. The caramel slices in the front really warm up your whole face in a way that a single-process color just won’t. For all the lucky girls with naturally more body to their hair, you will absolutely love how this cut just moves on its own with practically no effort. A trim every six weeks will keep it from losing that shape around the ears and nape.
#2 Layered Bixie with a Soft Wave Running Through It
This hairstyle is exciting and playful! Because it has layers that graduate up and is sitting right above the shoulders, it is nice and light without being stiff. If you have thinner hair, this is a fantastic hairstyle because the layers give the illusion of more hair. Most likely, you will want to keep a curling iron handy for the days that your natural wave is not cooperating, but you should be able to just scrunch it and go!
#3 Soft-Layered Bixie That Hits Right at the Jaw
I love how this falls. As it shifts, it highlights the cheekbones and jawline. The layers here are softer and more blended than the choppier ones, giving it a more polished feel. If you have thick hair, this will be your best friend. The weight removal through the interior means you won’t get a triangular puff. Also, such a fun cut to wear a bit messy too!
#4 Bold Highlights on a Textured Bixie
The highlights look great! They are on the layers offering fantastic contrast with every movement of the hair. The layers offer versatility as well! This style will look great on you in pretty much every situation and will always look stunning in photos. This is the ideal cut! It will look great if you are dressed up for a fancy event and it will also look great if you are just out running errands on a Saturday.
#5 Auburn Bixie with Layered Curls
That auburn is not a faded box dye copper, it is deep and warm which really helps the curly layers stand out. The jaw length is doing something really flattering here, it focuses the attention to the center of the face. If you’re thinking about going red for the first time, a bixie is actually a really good cut to debut it at because you’re committing to less length, which means less maintenance on the color overall.
#6 Shaggy Bixie with Just a Hint of Highlight
The shag influence is what makes this cut unique. There is greater disconnection between the layers compared to a traditional bixie, which makes it read a bit more rock and roll, and a bit less polished (in the best way). The highlights are a little more spaced out, so while they won’t achieve low maintenance hair color, they will catch light and give you some colors. For finer hair, a mid-lengths texturizing spray will assist in achieving that piece-y separation.
#7 Rich Auburn Bixie with Tousled Layers
We love the messy aesthetic on this one! It may seem as if she just shook her head and walked outside, but lots of thought was put into the design in the layers and the volume on the sides and at the apex. With warm skin tones, this auburn color is beautiful. What I like most is the little undercut at the nape; it lightens the bottom so the top layers can move freely without getting weighed down or flat.
#8 Balayage Bixie with Natural Wave
The balayage integrates with the base color perfectly and has no harsh lines. This looks awesome on a bob because every inch of color shows. The hair has movement and not a fake one. The hair’s natural waves mean you will get this with essentially no effort. The crown lift supports the whole shape.
#9 Jawline-Length Bixie with Soft Highlights
This haircut is right at the jaw which I like! I also like how the proportions are spot on. The highlights are nice and close to the face which brightens everything up without looking like a full highlight job. Some cuts look like they take thirty minutes to style, when really they take five. Keeping up with your trims is the biggest thing here. As soon as this length begins to grow past the jaw, it quickly loses that clean shape!
#10 Playful Tousled Bixie Just Above the Jaw
The texturized ends of this hair have a slight kick out rather than hiding under which I find gives a young and playful characteristic to the style without it being too childish. If you have been thinking about color, even if you just do a few light face-framing highlights, this haircut will help because it gives the eye something to follow with the layers.
#11 Warm-Toned Bixie with Face-Framing Pieces
The pieces framing your face are awesome! They really stand out. And the warm highlights are such a nice blend into the base color. For some extra volume, try some light mousse on damp hair before diffusing so it creates fullness without the crunch. I know most days are low effort and this cut’s natural flow is really forgiving for that.
#12 Curly Bixie with Lots of Bounce
This style really highlights the beauty of the curls. Each individual curl has the ability to bounce on its own instead of clumping and that is a lot harder to accomplish than people think. This is a great length for rounder face shapes as it provides elongation without adding width especially on the sides. For those whose curls tend to drop throughout the day, apply a light hold product to wet hair to keep them in shape for longer.
#13 Honey-Highlighted Bixie with Lots of Movement
When the honey highlights are added, the movement of the layers pops. When your hair shifts, you get a little peek of color. It feels really California, very sun-kissed, even if you haven’t been to the beach in ages. This suits best hair that has some density to it already, as the layers need enough weight to fall in the right places. The styling here looks intentionally messy, which is always the best way to wear a bixie in my view.
#14 Asymmetrical Bixie with Soft Volume at the Crown
Which side of your hair would you like to have cut longer? The hair that falls longer gives off a cool diagonal line across your face. The subtle highlights are perfect and help add dimension without battling the shape of the cut. A root lifting spray might be good for you if you have finer hair because it will help maintain volume and avoid going flat by the afternoon. The cut does a lot of work for you.
#15 Layered Bixie with Movement Through the Crown
Excellent and comfortable texture will let you feel the softness and delicacy and will give lightness and elegance to the entire hairstyle. The highlights are subtle and blended beautifully so you will get a color that says ‘I just left the salon’ and ‘I just turned grey’ and ‘I just got my haircut’ and my hair grows in a healthy way. This haircut is excellent for anyone who wants a cut that needs no styling.
#16 Wavy Bixie with Relaxed Polish
Cutting hair with a bixie cut is a skill, and the waves on the bixie cut are *chef’s kiss* amazing. This type of cut has that polished but not trying quality that is versatile for both brunch and a work meeting. The layers look blended so there are no harsh lines. There are just soft movements from the roots all the way to the tips. If your waves are flat, a sea salt spray is what you need. This will give you enough grip and texture without weighing your hair down or having that sticky feeling like there is too much product in your hair.
#17 Airy Bixie with Dimensional Highlights
The combination of color and design brings almost an illusion of everything together as one. The highlights give each layer its own moment. There also seems to be a slight ease which creates the illusion of the hair barely touching her head. A minimal use of product is ideal as the cut has so much built in texture and its not ideal to weigh it down. A light cream through the ends will do.

Side-swept bangs are a great way to alter a haircut’s shape. They soften the appearance of the forehead and cheekbones while the rest of the haircut provides a sharper definition around the jawline. The base color is rich, bordering on a dark espresso brown in some lights. The layers are perfectly placed to catch the light and create the illusion of fullness. If bangs make you nervous, side-swept bangs are a great option because they create the look of bangs without the full commitment.

I think the face framing layers are perfectly placed! Landing right on the cheekbone is the most flattering spot for shorter layers, so I think the overall shape looks super effortless, like she just towel dried her hair and left. If you don’t want to spend time on your hair in the mornings, this is the type of layering to go for because it gives a lot of shape with no effort at all.
#20 Curled Bixie with Warm Color Contrast
This color has beautiful warm tones that really highlight the curls, making the twists and turns in your hair more visible. If your hair is straight, you can still create this look by using a small barrel curling wand. Take about ten minutes to wrap random sections of your hair in different directions, and then shake it out. The cut is easy-going, and it looks great even when the curls fall.
#21 Elegant Jawline Bixie with Depth
This accessory hugs the jawline in a sculptural way! The sharpness and clean shape along with the highlights gives dimensional contrast so it won’t read as flat. It’s modern which I love and it’s perfect for someone who doesn’t want to look overly styled. The texture through the ends is crucial, if those ends were blunt and not point cut the entire shift aesthetic would shift.
#22 Caramel-Kissed Bixie with Character
The playfulness in this cut is great. My favorite part is how the ends flip, separate, and don’t stick together. It also creates movement when the light caramel highlights reflect off the warm tones throughout your hair. If you’re transitioning from longer hair, this cut is a great option because it will give you that sense of length and versatility. To keep this shape from looking too messy, you’ll want to schedule a trim every 5-6 weeks.
#23 Choppy Bixie in Deep Brunette
At times highlights aren’t needed. This deep brunette color is rich and glossy as is, and the choppy layers provide all the visual interest without adding a single color. The volume at the crown is built completely from the cut, which shows me that the person who did this really knew what they were doing with their layering. If you enjoy this style that is sleek but not flat, a smoothing serum will give that extra shine and keep fly aways in check.
#24 Caramel-Highlighted Bixie with a Soft Frame
The framing looks phenomenal. The longer pieces around the face soften it up and provide nice balance to the short layers in the back and crown. Also, the caramel highlights are perfectly placed. I’ll be honest, it is a color commitment. As it grows out, you will have to keep those face framing pieces updated due to them looking muddy and dirty if you don’t keep up with the maintenance. But I do think when it is all freshly done, it will be worth it to pay again.
#25 Chocolate Bixie with Playful Bangs and Lift
These bangs look amazing! They are soft and layered which helps them blend into the rest of the cut instead of making them look separate from the whole look. You want this for bangs on a bixie. The chocolate base with only a hint of lighter highlights peeking through the top creates a nice depth without being overly obvious. For this kind of lift at the crown, you usually have to dry that section upwards with a round brush. Once you learn the technique, it only takes about three minutes, and the lift will last all day!
