The midi bob is a style that keeps returning because it works with almost anyone. A bob that has just the right amount of structure and length is such a rare find, however, that’s not the case with a lob. Lobs can make it look like you’re just trying to grow your hair out. Many clients tend to stay at this length for years to come. A lot of them do want to look sophisticated and intentional, without the hassle of styling their hair every morning.
The cut is really interesting when you see how it works, especially how it can be even more flattering based on how thick your hair is. Last year I had a client with really coarse hair and she wanted the same midi bob as her friend who had really fine hair. I knew it was going to work out well because even though they had the same idea, they would look really different. I did a lot of internal weight on hers so the perimeter was left heavier so it wouldn’t pouf out. She’s definitely one of my favorite clients and she loved her version of the cut so much more than her friend’s. That’s my favorite part about this length, how customizable and adjustive it is and all the variations of the cut which makes it even more unique.
#1: Layered Midi Bob with a Little Highlight Work
If you want a cut that is different but not too crazy, this is the one I’d recommend. The layers give the finer hair more body than a single-length cut would, and the highlights frame the face and brighten it without looking like a ton of effort was put in. The hair goes just above the shoulders, which is a length that tends to behave nicely without too much hassle. If your hair is on the thinner side, you’ll probably want to use volumizing mousse at the roots every few days to give it some lift. Layers can go flat really easily if you skip styling. The slight wave you see in the photo is intentional. If you want this to just be a flat version of the look, that’s not going to happen. It’ll look completely different if you just do a quick pass with a large barrel iron on a few pieces.
#2: Soft Layered Midi Bob with Natural Warmth
If you have medium to thick hair, this one is good if you want movement without too much layering which can seem dated. The highlights look sun-kissed and bright around the eyes and cheekbones in a flattering way. There’s a tiny asymmetric in the length most won’t notice but it keeps the look from being too put together. This is a haircut that holds shape well between appointments but if you want it looking polished, you’d want to come in for a reshaping every 10 to 12 weeks.
#3: Glossy Black Straight Midi Bob
This style fits you well if you have dark hair and want it to look luxurious. The layers are just enough to avoid the helmet look, while the deep black color improves the look to super healthy. I would suggest this for people who have fine hair and wish to create the appearance of thicker hair as the ends are cut straight across to create nice weight at the bottom. It is best if you get regular trims every 6-8 weeks to keep the ends nice and sharp because a clean cut like this, leaves no room to hide any damage. Overall, it is actually very simple day to day. Just apply a shine serum and you can head out the door.
#4: Caramel-Toned Waves on a Precision Bob
I really enjoy the coloring here. The caramel combined with the medium brown base is phenomenal, and the blend is wonderful. It takes a lot of skill and understanding to know when to stop blending. The cut is very clean and has the perfect amount of texture at the ends to prevent it from looking too blunt. This type of cut can be challenging to find as it looks great straight and wavy. Just keep in mind that if you like to space your appointments, the ends will begin to look a bit messy in about eight weeks.
#5: Ash Blonde Midi Bob with Warm Highlights
This color might be a bit of a commitment. It’ll look ah-mazing once toned, but in 3-4 weeks depending on your washing habits/how your water interacts with it, it will definitely become more brassy. You’ll need to do purple shampoo washes in addition to some gloss toning between your salon appointments. The cut is really nice for fine/medium hair because the layering creates an illusion of more thickness and the length is very flattering for oval/heart shape faces. Just be prepared for color maintenance because it is a lot!
#6: Charcoal Wavy Midi Bob
I work faster on this one since the cut is pretty standard, it’s the color that gets the most work done. That charcoal color has a richness to it that darker brunettes sometimes miss when they go true black, it reads as more dimensional and a little less stark. The waves are loose and undone which keeps it from feeling too serious. If you’re naturally dark-haired this is low effort on the color side, but if you’re posting out to get here, you’ll need to do regular conditioning treatments to keep it from drying out and losing that shine.
#7: Mocha Midi Bob for Everyday
The midi bob is the perfect cut for someone who is short on time as it is practical in length. The mocha colour is rich and warm and a low maintenance colour. It suits most face shapes and is best for medum to thick hair where the natural volume is at the ends. It may not be the most exciting cut in the lineup but it’s nice not to have to think about it.
#8: Walnut Bob with Caramel Ribbons
These caramel highlights are so subtly done that they just warm up the overall look without creating any contrast. The cut with highlights will create the illusion of fullness with the line created by the blunt ends and the color variation that trick the eyes to think there’s more dimension than there actually is. The downside to this is that this sleek finish will also show humidity and frizz so if you live in a more damp area, you may have to use a smoothing serum more often than you’d want to.
#9: Brunette Midi Bob with Inward-Swept Layers
The swooping layers on this one do something really nice along the jawline, they soften it without adding bulk around the face, which is really tough to achieve. This is best on medium density hair where the layers have enough weight to hold that gentle inward curve at the ends. If your hair is really fine the ends might just hang instead of sweeping, and if it’s really thick the curve can puff out to something less intentional. A good cut to grow out gracefully, which matters more than most people think about when they’re choosing a style.
#10: Espresso Midi Bob with Hidden Undercut
Out of everything on this list, this one seems the most interesting to me. Since the outermost layer covers the undercut, it gives a clean midi bob silhouette from the front. And when you want to show it off, you can tuck one side behind your ear! It has a practical side, too. For thick hair, it removes bulk from the hair so the cut sits nicer and feels lighter on your head. The most important part is the upkeep. The shaved section grows out really quickly and starts looking messy after 4 weeks, so you’ll have to come in a lot or learn to do it yourself with a trimmer at home.
#11: Dark Chestnut Midi Bob with Loose Waves
This hairstyle is simple and fast to do. The dark chestnut color is good here because it enhances the waviness. Light colors can sometimes flatten the waves, whereas darker colors increase the visibility of the waves. For this style, medium to thick hair is ideal since there is more natural volume, and the waves will look more free as opposed to controlled. You will only need some mousse to be scrunched in the hair while it’s damp, followed by diffuse or air drying. If by the end of the day your waves have fallen, just touch up the front pieces with a curling iron, and they will be good to go again.
#12: Golden Brown Caramel Tousled Midi Bob
There is a warmth with this color that gives an outdoorsy vibe to the person wearing the top. I think the hair that is tousled gives off the perfect ‘lived in’ look, and the subtle asymmetrical hem gives a little bit more modern to the look. This style looks the best on hair that is medium to thick. The way the hair is layered will keep it light and movable, but will not give that look to limp. If the hair is too fine or is super straight, a lot of effort is going to be needed every morning to achieve that look. Actually, I would probably suggest a hairstyle that is more aligned with the natural direction of the hair.

This style has an inward curve around the face and will elongate your neck and draw attention to the cheekbones. This style is flattering on everyone. The chestnut color looks good on most people; starting from a base color that is reasonably close to the chestnut shade, the maintenance is pretty low. Regarding layering, coming in every eight weeks or so will keep the graduated effect clean because if you wait longer, the hair will grow to a single length, and you could lose the best feature of the cut.

This is an awesome hairstyle for people with fine to medium hair. This is perfect bang hairstyle for someone who may not want to go for a full fringe. In this style, the bangs are blended into the rest of the cut, which is also a great choice because caramel tones suit lighter skin better. While the extra layers give a bit of volume, they aren’t so heavy that they make the style too busy. The honest truth is that fringe like this takes a bit of work in the morning. This is out of the box, and I get that this is probably not something I would offer many of my clients, but I appreciate it. The dramatic contrast from the base color and dip dyeing the neon green is a cool technique, and that chop at the jawline helps it look purposeful and not messy. This looks great on heart and oval-shaped faces because the strong line along the jaw really balances out the whole shape of the face. As for vivid colors, they fade very quickly and usually look patchy, meaning you will be stuck with mint green for a long time and a lot of salon appointments to keep it looking good. If you don’t like going to the salon regularly, this is not the cut for you. But if you enjoy hair maintenance and color upkeep, then go for it.
#18: Deep Chocolate Midi Bob with Soft Framing
The rich brown color is elegant and the flavor doesn’t plunge too single with a single depth, and the slight change in the tone does give it some depth, something that is often missed in single process brunettes. The subtle layering around the face also gives a lift to finer hair types and gives the greater fullness illusion that is greater than what is actually there. This length, which is just at the collarbone, is one of those universally forgiving lengths that is good for most people. If you’re going darker from a lighter color, expect to have a few appointments to build the depth gradually rather than going all in at once, it is a more naturally looking result.

The cut angle is modern, not to dramatic and that’s what makes a difference. It makes the cut look directional as opposed to hair just hanging. It works well with medium to thick hair, but you will want to come in often for shaping since the angle grows out and it loses its point of distinction rather quickly.

The effect of deep plum as a hair color is eye catching due to it’s unique ability to capture light that typical dark colors do not. The truth is that you will have to do a lot more maintenance if you want to keep both the color and style of your hair pin straight. The color will wash out to an unattractive brown if you do not keep up straight hair maintenance, and your natural hair will likely need to be super straight in order to achieve this look so you will need to use a flat iron, plus heat protectant, if you want to look like this. Overall the style and color is nice, but the appeal isn’t worth the upkeep, particularly for medium to thick hair because you will end up having to use the straightener every day.
#21: Caramel Midi Bob with Wispy Bangs
When considering a wavy midi bob, this one is the most unique. The gentle fringe is a great addition that makes the front view softer, utilising the eyes, and positioning them as the focal point of the style – especially great for heart shapes. The caramel hue is perfectly balanced in warmth without being overly gold. Layered waves can add that extra body to finer hair that tends to fall limp. Shag straight hair is definitely not low maintenance, so this hair do will require some effort everyday. For hair that is straight or fine, that effort will be in the form of some heated waves, and a few products to set the style. For those that are blessed with some wave or bend, this is the true low maintenance style, and will look even better with time and less effort.

If your hair tends to fall limp, this may feel a bit lifeless on you, but for those with natural body, this will be a breeze to manage.

What stands out the most with this look is the combination of colors. The base is a rich auburn with burgundy highlights. This looks so warm and vibrant while also not looking overdone. The downside is, like most color work, you’ll need to book regular toning appointments to maintain that vibrancy and use color-safe products. If you’re willing to invest in it, this will be a stunning look!

This one has a cinnamon tone which adds warmth that flatters a range of skin tones and means color refreshes will be far less frequent which is a lovely change from high-maintenance options. The curtain fringe does a lot of lifting here by framing the eyes and adding a lot of personality the whole cut. When the hair is this dense and straight, the cut looks polished and full which gives the impression of minimal effort. The fringe is one area where you can’t get too lazy though, because it does require a quick blow dry, or a little pass with a mini iron every morning as slept on bangs look far from intentional.
#26: Black Midi Bob with Clean Lines
a great option that is blunt and collarbone length is straight thick hair, because it gives the most density and look solid in photos as well as move as one piece, and the deep black color will give the most shine. The blunt cut is clean, detailed and no layers or hidden or details to mask. The deep black color adds shine, and just because it is simple doesn’t men there is no maintenance. In order to keep the clean ends, the cut does require a trim every six weeks , and hair that isn’t straight will require some styling, as it will not look as good if the hair is wavy or curly. Especially when maintained, this cut is one of the more sophisticated styles.

I don’t have a lot to say about this, because all I can say is it’s a nice simple midi bob with good texturing at the ends. It sits at a good in-between length and will work on straight to slightly wavy hair, and the texturing is enough to give it personality so it doesn’t look like you just went to a cheap chain salon and got a haircut. It will require a tiny bit of styling cream at the ends to look nice, but honestly it’s thirty seconds so it won’t be a production.

This is certainly the best type of balayage technique. It looks the most natural with a beautifully blended transition from dark roots to light ends. It is more sun-kissed as opposed to having a more bold stripy look. I can see this working best for finer to medium textured hair as enough movement is created by the layers so that the cut won’t fall flat. It also adds the effect of making hair look fuller than it actually is. The length is quite forgiving as it will hit around the shoulders which makes it a versatile length for styling. Balayage is going to need to be refreshed about every 2-3 months since the tones can start looking brassy instead of warm. At this time layers will also need a trim to keep the shape from going too shapeless.

Midi bobs are ideal if you fancy more subtle choices instead of bold and out there options.
