In the years leading up to 2026, hairstyle trends will continue evolving towards increased acceptance of gender-neutral styles. This includes the ability to mix and match elements of traditional feminine and masculine hairstyles and weave them together into a fresh, innovative look. Perhaps the most successful example of this is androgynous hair. As a hairstyle, it takes elements from both masculine and feminine styles to create a striking, polished, and ultimately versatile look. This post will look into androgynous hairstyles and 15 inspiring examples to motivate you in 2023. These styles will completely transform your look, or are a great way to add a few trendy touches instead of a full makeover.
Let’s talk about androgynous hair cuts. Honestly, some of my favorites have been ones that have been totally unplanned. For example, I had a client come in one time to get a bob. After chatting with her, she walked out with a tapered undercut, which was a surprise to her, and bold highlights. This is the magic of letting go of traditional styles and thinking creatively about your hair.
Bristol is undergoing some brilliant transformations around the New Year and I am excited to see them. I love seeing people abandon the traditional concepts of men’s haircuts and women’s haircuts. It’s a really outdated way of thinking.
I like that more people are choosing hairstyles that they like rather than just going for the trends. I’ve chosen a few androgynous hair cuts that illustrate the points I like so you can see them and decide for yourself if you want to change your hair.

#1: That Silver Layered Pixie That Makes You Look Like You Run Something
I am obsessed with natural silver and this is giving me everything! If you have thick hair, and have been battling it your whole life, this is the cut that works WITH you instead of against you. The shorter layers on top will give your hair volume without poof! The sides are tapered so tight that you won’t have to think about them for weeks. And the color!? That is for someone who said ‘I’m done dying,’ and it still looks amazing. The only thing I will say is you will have to style those top layers in the morning, but that only takes two minutes max of blow drying with a round brush.

#2: The Textured Pixie That Makes Everyone Ask Who Cut Your Hair
I’ve been trying to perfect my technique for this hairstyle and I love how real it makes the hair look like it took ages, but it really takes only about 4 minutes. The texturising paste also adds to the effect. The tapered nape and temple will keep everything looking fresh and clean, and the top is left with some choppy texturing which allows the hair to just flow. I think this style is best suited for hair that is fine to medium, as the texture from the different layers creates the illusion of more volume than there is. Also, after getting this style, I would recommend that the regular trims be done every 4-5 weeks, as it loses its shape quite quickly; the tapered sections grow out and it gets quite a lot nern. but when it’s all fresh, it looks really good.

#3: Messy Silver Blonde Shag, AKA the “I Woke Up Like This” Cut
This is what I envisioned when you sent me the photo and said you wanted it messy but like GOOD messy. The layers give so much texture and body and the nape detail is accentuating the jaw beautifully, especially if you have an oval or heart face shape. Now let’s talk silver blonde – I’m obsessed but the upkeep is real because this color tends to get brassy. So be ready for a good purple shampoo and to book toner appointments every few weeks. If that sounds like a commitment you’d be willing to make, then I’m here for this because it’s an unreal look!

#4: The Pompadour Undercut That Has No Business Being This Good
My chair is a big one (and the only one) in our small shop, so it’s normal that people who sit in rock-shop chairs don’t think too deeply about what goes on on their head, but a pompadour seems so obvious that every time I see a new face, I feel euphoric as most otherwise would ignore such an obvious option, which I think is a crying shame. The overall look, should cast an unbalanced edgy-elegant vibe, with all due respect, as it would combine an undercut with a soft, clean, massive, and voluminous pompadour. This is frankly one of the most elegant styles. This is your style as this will definitely give you a framed look around your face if you are fine hair and have always wished for more volume. The only drawback is that getting the look is going to cost you a few more minutes in the morning, as it involves a volumizing mousse and a blow dryer to have it looking that way. Getting it to look right requires a bit of practice, but once you get it down, it is literally second nature. So, don’t get discouraged if it takes a few tries.

#5: The Dark Chestnut Pixie You Didn’t Know You Needed
In my opinion, dark chestnut is a highly unappreciated shade when paired with a tousled pixie hairstyle. The color adds richness to the look without making it seem like it is an overdone to the hairstyle. The shorter sides allow for finer hair to create some texture and thickness on top, which is a plus. Most hairstyles have a ton of styling, but this is one of the few wash and go hairstyles. I know it sounds cliche, but I actually mean it. Expect frequent hair cuts to keep this style looking fresh. I think this hairstyle saves you a ton of time in the mornings, and it’s a big time saving factor.

#6: Platinum Blonde Feathered Crop, For When You’re Ready to GO There
We understand how frustrating it can be to hold platinum in. At least you can GO platinum. This style gives you the confidence to do it. The sides are short, with a cropped cut, while the top is styled to give volume, so it will not scream “buzzcut growing out.” This is awesome for fine hair because that type of feathering looks like you have a lot of hair. Honestly, you can’t platinum and not be committed to the maintenance. Get ready for salon visits every 4 to 6 weeks. It better be a good bond repair treatment, or your hair will let you know it’s not happy with you. Obviously, it’s definitely worth the maintenance.

#7: The Chocolate Swoop That Has ALL the Drama
The swoop style haircut is both fun and versatile. The longer front pieces with the asymmetrical haircut will totally shape the style of the cut. The sides look nice and structured while the top section draws attention. With this haircut, the contrast is nice enough to create a second look while not being too “loud”. It is a low maintenance cut because all you have to do in the morning is run some sticky cream through it and it is done. Growing out this style will look a lot different because the sides will lose their definition. In order to maintain that sharp look, you will need to maintain the cut every 3 to 4 weeks.

#8: The Tousled Layered Bob That’s Cooler Than It Has Any Right to Be
Choppy layer bobs are one of my favorite styles. Mirror head shake and smile? Never gets old. Voicing a layer style that gives off great bed head vibes. I designed the layers to move and flow effortlessly. Brunette with highlights is always a great choice to create depth and dimension without overly highlighted hair. Exceptional choice. I will say though, we may need to alter layers for rounder faced clients, as this version of the style does best with rounder features. I guess that’s why you go to a professional!

#9: Soft Rose Gold Fringe, AKA the Color I Wish Everyone Would Try at Least Once
I appreciate the aesthetics of the design on the rose gold color. That shade on a cropped cut with a full soft forward falling fringe evokes an artsy aesthetic. I appreciate that the fringe assists as coverage for anyone self conscious about a wider forehead or wanting to balance the look of a rounder face. The rose gold color won’t be ideal as rose gold tends to fade badly, so expect to book color appointments often. If you have fine hair, this cut is going to give you exactly what you need. The tapered back keeps everything looking polished and the cut creates volume without the bulk, which is exactly what you want.

#10: Deep Purple Undercut for When You Want to Be a Little Mysterious
The hint of deep purple on dark hair looks stunning and shimmers beautifully when light hits it. I love it! The look is complete with the asymmetrical undercut, where most of the volume is on top, leaving the sides buzzed for a clean and polished look. The surprise of the purple hair is a great addition, and it is a great low-maintenance style since the undercut will do most of the work. To keep the purple from fading to a brownish muddy color, you’ll have to do some toner touch-ups or use color-depositing shampoo to stretch it out between appointments. You can definitely play with the length to have some versatility and length.

#11: The Tapered Pixie That Works Way Harder Than It Looks
When I do cuts like this one, I say to myself, “you will make a lot of people happy” because I know how many different styles they can do with this. This is a very structured cut with a personalized top that makes the client look very put together and will make them look good even if they just rolled out of bed. It is best to have a lot of fine hair because the dense texture won’t weigh the hair down. This style does require a bit more upkeep than the other options, but the payoff is huge. With this shortcut, your morning routine, will just consist of a few minutes.

#12: Windswept Ivory Blonde Bob with Those Dark Roots We Love
Let’s start allowing darker roots showing through blonde hair. Look at how much contrast there is between the creamy blonde of the bob, and the natural brown roots. It creates so much more dimension in the overall look, and helps to save time in the salon. Plus, no need to make a mad dash to the salon every three weeks to chase an undercut. The windswept look gives an ‘I just came from outside and look fabulous’ vibe. It frames your face and brings more attention to your eyes. This hairstyle does need some round brusing to make it look a certain way, and some blow drying, but the time required is minimal. In fact, For a polished look, under 10 minutes is more than enough.

#13 Sleek Brunette Pixie with All That Gorgeous Texture
Brunette pixie haircuts really shine when you let the color do the work. Darker shades accentuate the texture and details more. Allowing individual layers from this cut to be visible creates the illusion of increased volume in the hair. You only need to add a bit of pomade and the rest of the work is done. The only maintenance this style needs is to be regularly trimmed to keep the hair looking polished and sharp. Hair that is softens over time changes the whole look. If you’d like to look put together without spending a great deal of time on your hair, this is the cut for you.

#14 Caramel Streaked Side-Swept Pixie, a.k.a. My Current Obsession
This month, I have suggested this particular style to four of my clients. It features side-swept movements which create a very effortlessly sophisticated look. The caramel highlights add warmth and dimension to the style and really bring it to life. There’s a sneaky little undercut at the back which keeps the back nice and clean. No one wants to worry about what the back of their head looks like. This haircut is best for fine to medium hair as it takes very little effort to style due to the layers created by the cut.

#15 Silver Frost Buzz Cut for People Who Are Done Overthinking Their Hair
What is the best part of this look? It’s for the person walking in saying, “I want to stop thinking about my hair and start loving it.” I can most likely relate to that the most. Buzz cut and naturally graying hair – so cool. Salt and pepper is a pattern to cover up. Perspective shift is everything. Oval or heart-shaped bone structures will suit the length and buzz cut really well. You are going to be free from color appointments since you are working with, not against, your natural tones. You will need to keep it buzzed to crispen it up, but that is probably a 10-minute job. The morning routine will be simplified to just splashing water, maybe a bit of scalp moisturizer, and you’re good to go.
