One of my favorite questions to ask before doing a pixie cut is, “How do you feel about your ears?” It sounds light hearted but it’s a real consideration that most people don’t think about before getting a drastic haircut. The best clientele operating under this assumption are the ones who end up loving the short hair the most. The ones who really embrace the change.
My favorite example is an older woman, probably in her sixties. I remember her coming into the salon after blow-drying a layered bob every single morning for twenty years. We decided to make it a big change and go for a cropped pixie. She started crying. But it was a happy cry. Auburn looks good on a few people, and i think it’s fair to say that it can wash out quickly. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to use a color-deposit gloss in between appointments. This cut is also really easy to maintain, wash and go type cut. I’ll probably leave it about an inch or two on top with a tapered nape and a soft fringe that sits just above the brows. I’m a fan of how the tone at the crown creates the illusion of a lot more volume. If you like earrings this haircut will show them off really well. It doesn’t hide much around the forehead and neck, so you’ll either need to be comfortable with that or this isn’t the right haircut for you.
#4 Chestnut Pixie with Natural Volume at the Crown
I try to lessen my influence on a style as much as possible and let the hair do its thing, and this is a great example. The cowlick at the crown is doing most of the work, and volume like this is something people try to achieve with a round brush and a twenty minute blow dry. They’ll never get this kind of volume. The catch is that coppers are one of the most high-maintenance color families, so you will need toning to control the brass. Also, those super pretty micro lights are fabulous at the part, they add dimension without being too obvi.

While this style may look effortless, there is a lot of care and technique that has gone into its execution. The crown cowlick is a built-in volumizer, and happy hair cutting that sculpts the shape of the hair movement. For that clean transition, I would use a tight clipper taper at the nape and feather point texturizing on top. The warm copper makes the complexion look nice; however, this tone fades quickly, so you’ll need demi-gloss refreshes every few weeks. It looks good with no styling, dries quickly, and air dries particularly well. It looks good on oval to heart shaped faces.

I really like these micro bangs, and they’re definitely not an easy thing to do! The rounded shape, ear to ear, gives it a little bit of a mod quality, which I really like on women who have a strong presence and really embody the look. The trick with this style is that the fringe needs some precise tooth cutting to soften the edge; otherwise, it can read quite harsh and not quite intentional. We’ve got a crown cowlick here which you want to be working with through some graded layers, and some slight nape graduation rather than fighting it, because trying to fight a cowlick on hair this short is just not going to go your way. With fine to medium hair, once this is cut right and the shape is established, this look is minimal fuss.
#9 Peachy Strawberry-Blonde Pixie with Feathered Lift
That color really works. It is warm enough to still brighten the skin without going into I-try-too-hard territory. On a mature complexion, peachy strawberry-blonde is one of those combinations that just works.
