25 Timeless 70s Style Shags for Women Over 60

There’s something about a shag that makes people think they need to be twenty-two and living in a van to pull it off, which is honestly one of the more ridiculous ideas floating around out there. I’ve been giving women shags for years, women in their forties, fifties, sixties and beyond, and some of the best ones I’ve ever done were on clients who walked in thinking they were “too old” for it. The 70s shag wasn’t built for one age group or one hair type, it was built around movement and texture and that sort of undone quality that actually gets better as hair changes over time.

What I love about this cut, and what I think people forget, is that the original shags from the 70s were never meant to look perfect. They were supposed to look like you just rolled out of somewhere interesting. I had a client a few years ago, she was maybe sixty-three, and she brought in a photo of herself from 1974 with this incredible shag she used to wear. She wanted it back but was nervous it would look like she was trying too hard. We did it, adjusted the layers for where her hair is now, and she literally teared up in the chair. That’s the thing about this cut… it has a memory to it, but it also works completely fresh for someone who’s never tried it. The bones of a shag are just good, and the way stylists are adapting it now means there’s a version for pretty much everyone.

#1: Voluminous Layered Hairstyle with Soft Waves

This voluminous layered hairstyle features soft, face-framing waves that add movement and dimension. The length is mid to long, making it versatile for various styling options. Ideal for medium to thick hair types, the layers enhance body and texture, perfect for oval or heart-shaped faces. To maintain its bounce, use a light mousse for styling and finish with a texturizing spray. This look is distinctive due to its retro charm and modern flair, making it a timeless choice for any occasion.

Elegant Long Layered Shag with Soft Waves

#2 Long Layered Shag with Soft Waves

I really like this one because it doesn’t try too hard, it’s just long and soft with these waves that kind of fall where they want to. The layers are doing most of the work here, giving the hair shape without making it look overly styled or stiff. If your hair is on the finer side this is a nice option because the movement makes everything look like there’s more of it. You will probably need to put in a little effort in the morning, a quick pass with a large barrel curling iron or even just scrunching with some mousse while it air dries, but it’s not high maintenance by any means. There’s an elegance to it that I think works across a wide range of ages.

Chic Layered Silver Shag Cut

#3 Layered Silver Shag

If you’re going silver, and I mean really leaning into it, a cut like this makes all the difference. The layers here are soft enough that they don’t chop the silver into harsh sections, they just give it somewhere to go. I see a lot of women let their silver grow out but keep a one-length cut and it can end up looking a little flat… this is the opposite of that. The face-framing pieces are key, they bring everything forward in a way that’s really flattering. You’ll want to come in for trims fairly regularly though, maybe every six weeks or so, because once those layers grow out too much the whole shape starts to disappear.

Textured Silver Pixie Cut with Soft Layers

#4 Silver Pixie with Soft Textured Layers

This is one of those cuts I could do all day. Short, silver, textured, and it just works. The layers are really gentle which keeps it from looking too choppy or severe, and there’s enough movement in there that it doesn’t read as a “grandma cut,” which I know some of my clients worry about. If your hair is fine this is going to give you so much more fullness than you’d expect from something this short. You do need to keep up with trims, probably every four to five weeks, but the daily styling is practically nothing… you towel dry, maybe run a little texturizing paste through it, and you’re out the door.

Soft Textured Bob with Wispy Bangs

#5 Textured Bob with Wispy Bangs

The wispy bangs are what make this one for me. They’re not heavy or blunt, they’re just barely there, and they soften everything around the forehead and eyes in the nicest way. The bob itself has this gentle texture to it that keeps it from looking too structured… it’s shoulder length so it’s easy to work with and you’ve got options for how you wear it day to day. I think this is a really smart cut for someone who wants to feel a little fresher without doing anything drastic. The waves will need some encouragement if your hair is naturally straight, but nothing a quick scrunch with some sea salt spray can’t handle.

Layered Beachy Shag with Face-Framing Bangs

#6 Beachy Layered Shag with Face-Framing Bangs

This is that cut where you look like you just came back from somewhere warm and interesting, which honestly is a pretty great vibe at any age. The bangs are doing a lot here, framing the cheekbones and keeping the eye drawn up, and the layers throughout are loose and relaxed enough that the whole thing has this natural movement to it. I will say this one takes a little bit of product commitment… you want a good mousse or sea salt spray worked through damp hair before you let it dry, otherwise it can go a little limp. But when it’s styled right it has this effortless quality that’s really hard to get with other cuts.

Stylish Copper Layered Shag with Soft Waves

#7 Copper Layered Shag with Soft Waves

Oh, this copper. I could talk about this color for a while. There’s something about a warm copper on a layered shag that just glows, it catches the light in a way that cooler tones don’t, and it gives the whole cut this richness and depth that makes the layers really pop. The cut itself hits just below the shoulders which is a nice versatile length, and the waves are soft enough that they don’t overpower anything. Now I will be honest with you, copper is one of those colors that fades faster than you’d like, so you’re looking at more frequent color appointments or at the very least a good color-depositing shampoo to stretch things out. But the payoff is gorgeous.

Soft Layered Shag with Gentle Bangs

#8 Soft Shag with Gentle Bangs

This is a quiet one, not flashy, not trying to be anything other than what it is, and I kind of love it for that. The bangs are gentle and they sit nicely across the forehead without overwhelming anything, and the layers give fine hair just enough lift that it doesn’t fall flat against the head. If you’ve got subtle highlights or you’re thinking about adding some, a cut like this is a great canvas for that because the layers catch the color variation and make it look really natural. It’s the kind of cut where people say you look great but can’t quite put their finger on why.

Textured Golden Shag with Feathered Bangs

#9 Golden Shag with Feathered Bangs

The feathered bangs here are giving me real 70s energy in the best possible way, they sweep to the side and blend into the layers so seamlessly that there’s no hard line where the bangs stop and the rest of the hair starts. The warm golden tone is doing a lot for the complexion too, it brings this warmth and brightness to the face that cooler blondes just don’t do. If your hair runs on the straight side naturally you might need to spend a few minutes with a round brush to get that volume and bend through the layers, but the structure of the cut does most of the heavy lifting for you.

Softly Layered Blunt Bob with Subtle Highlights

#10 Layered Blunt Bob with Subtle Highlights

I think of this as the “I have my life together” cut, and I mean that as a real compliment. It’s clean and polished without being boring, and the subtle highlights keep it from reading as too severe or one-dimensional. The blunt line at the bottom gives it structure while the soft layering on top adds just enough texture that it doesn’t look like a helmet. This is the kind of cut that transitions beautifully from running errands to dinner out without you having to touch it. You’ll want regular trims to keep that bottom edge sharp though, because once it starts growing out unevenly it loses what makes it special.

Textured Soft Bob with Subtle Layers

#11 Soft Bob with Subtle Layers

This is a nice transitional cut for someone who maybe isn’t ready for a full shag but wants to move away from something more blunt or one-length. It grazes the collarbone which is such a flattering length on most people, and the layers are subtle enough that they add movement without changing the overall shape too dramatically. I’ve done versions of this on clients who were nervous about going shorter and they always end up loving how much lighter and fresher it feels. It works with your hair’s natural texture too, whether that’s straight or wavy, you don’t have to fight it.

Textured Rich Brown Shag with Soft Layers

#12 Rich Brown Shag with Soft Layers

That rich brown with just a hint of warmth running through it is really beautiful, and the shag cut gives it so much life. The layers are soft and they move when you move which is exactly what you want… hair that looks alive rather than sitting there doing nothing. If your hair has even a little natural wave to it this cut is going to work with that instead of against it, which makes the whole styling process so much easier. A little lightweight styling cream scrunched through damp hair and you’re basically done. The color adds depth too, those subtle highlights keep it from looking flat or heavy.

Softly Layered Blonde Shag with Feathered Ends

#13 Blonde Layered Shag with Feathered Ends

The feathered ends on this one are what give it that lightness, they taper off so the hair doesn’t just stop at one line, it kind of dissolves at the bottom which keeps the whole thing looking soft and easy. The highlighted blonde is pretty and bright, though I’ll be upfront… maintaining a blonde this light takes commitment, we’re talking toning appointments and purple shampoo and trying not to go too long between touch-ups or it starts to pull brassy. But if you’re willing to put in the upkeep the result is really lovely, especially with these layers giving it all that texture and movement.

Textured Auburn Shag with Subtle Layers

#14 Auburn Textured Shag with Subtle Layers

Auburn is one of those colors I always get a little excited about because it’s warm without being loud, and on a shag like this it just works. The layers are subtle, they’re not chopping the hair up into obvious sections, they’re just giving it enough shape that it moves nicely and doesn’t hang there. This is a good low-effort cut once you’ve got it… wash and go territory for a lot of hair types, especially if you’ve got any natural texture to work with. The warmth of the color brightens the face too which is something I always think about when we’re choosing tones.

Textured Soft Shag with Luminous Highlights

#15 Textured Shag with Luminous Highlights

The highlights here are doing something really nice, they’re placed so they catch the light and give the hair this sort of glow that looks natural rather than streaky. Combined with the soft shag layers it creates a lot of dimension without looking overdone. The length is versatile, just below the shoulders, so you can wear it down or pull it back if you need to. I’d say this one leans better toward finer hair because the layers are designed to create fullness, and if your hair is already thick the layering might need to be adjusted so it doesn’t get too big. But on the right person this is just… really pretty.

Soft Layered Shag with Subtle Face-Frame

#16 Layered Shag with Subtle Face-Framing

The face-framing on this one is so well done, it’s not heavy or obvious, just these pieces that fall around the cheekbones and draw everything in. It gives the whole cut a polished feel even though it’s technically a shag which is supposed to be the opposite of polished, and I think that contrast is what makes it interesting. Shoulder length is always going to be easy to work with, and you could do a light balayage on something like this to really enhance the layers and add some sun-kissed warmth. Fine hair will love this because the layers give it body, and it’s forgiving enough that you don’t have to style it perfectly every single day.

Softly Layered Shag with Face-Frame Highlights

#17 Layered Shag with Face-Framing Highlights

The highlights placed right around the face are smart because they brighten you up where it matters most, around the eyes and cheekbones, without having to go all over with color. The shag itself is medium length with a gentle wave that gives it a lot of movement and that easy, lived-in quality that’s hard to manufacture if the cut isn’t right. This works really well for fine to medium hair because the layers create the illusion that there’s more going on than there actually is. If your hair is on the thicker side you might need a bit more product and blowout time to keep it from getting poofy, but for most people this is a really wearable, flattering cut.

Chic Textured Pixie Cut with Subtle Layers

#18 Textured Pixie with Subtle Layers

Going this short can feel like a leap but when it’s done well, and this is done well, it’s so freeing. The length sits just above the jawline and those subtle layers give it texture without making it look messy. The warm highlights woven through add dimension and keep it from looking flat, which is something that can happen with short cuts if you’re not careful about the color. I think the key with a pixie like this is finding a stylist who understands how to cut for your specific hair texture because the margin for error is smaller when there’s less hair to work with. Trims every four weeks or so will keep it looking intentional.

Modern Layered Shag with Soft Bangs

#19 Modern Layered Shag with Soft Bangs

This is a really modern take on the shag and the bangs are what sell it for me, they’re soft and wispy and they hit right at the eyebrows which opens the whole face up. The layers throughout are doing a great job of creating volume in the right places, especially through the crown, and the natural-looking highlights give it this texture that catches light beautifully. Mid-length cuts like this are so versatile, you can go sleek one day and tousled the next and it works both ways. If your hair is fine this is going to be one of those cuts that makes you feel like you have twice as much hair as you actually do.

Light Blonde Layered Shag with Soft Bangs

#20 Light Blonde Layered Shag with Soft Bangs

The airiness of this cut is what gets me, it’s light and it moves and the blonde keeps the whole thing feeling fresh and youthful. The bangs are soft and they blend into the layers around the face so naturally that the whole cut feels like one cohesive thing rather than a bunch of separate decisions. Now, light blonde like this is going to need attention… you’re looking at purple shampoo regularly and touch-ups to keep it from going yellow, that’s just the reality. But if you love being blonde and you don’t mind the upkeep, the combination of this color with this cut is really something.

Chic Textured Bob with Soft Bangs

#21 Textured Bob with Soft Bangs

This is one of those cuts that looks simple but there’s actually a lot of thought in it, the way the bangs sit, the subtle layering that gives it movement without making it look choppy, the length that hits just above the shoulders so it’s practical but still has presence. For fine or straight hair this is going to be especially flattering because the texture built into the cut gives it life that the hair might not have on its own. I’d probably suggest a volumizing spray at the roots before blow drying to really get the most out of the shape. It’s a clean, pulled-together look that doesn’t take a lot of time which is honestly what most of my clients are looking for.

Softly Layered Golden Shag with Light Waves

#22 Golden Layered Shag with Light Waves

There’s a warmth to this whole look that I find really appealing, the golden tones blending together with those light waves and the layering all working in the same direction to create something that just feels… soft. Not in a boring way but in a way that makes you look approachable and relaxed. The layers are light enough that they don’t overwhelm finer hair but substantial enough that they give the cut actual shape. If you’ve got naturally straight hair you’ll want to work some wave in there, either with a curling wand or by braiding it damp and letting it dry, because that’s where the magic of this cut really shows up.

Radiant Copper Layered Shag with Face-Framing Bangs

#23 Copper Layered Shag with Face-Framing Bangs

I genuinely light up a little when someone asks me for copper because it’s just such a great color on the right person, and paired with a shag like this it’s fantastic. The bangs frame the face and the layers give it all this movement that makes the copper catch the light from every angle. Mid-length is smart here because it keeps the color from looking too heavy or overwhelming, there’s enough hair to show it off but not so much that it becomes the only thing you see. If you have a rounder face shape you might want to talk to your stylist about adjusting the bang length and angle so they elongate rather than widen, but the bones of this cut are really strong.

Textured Short Silver Shag with Soft Layers

#24 Short Silver Shag with Soft Layers

Short silver shags are one of my favorite things to cut because they just look so alive, there’s all this texture and movement happening and the silver gives it an almost luminous quality that longer cuts don’t always achieve. The layers here are soft enough that it still looks feminine and not too edgy, which I know matters to some of my clients. It’s genuinely low maintenance as far as styling goes, maybe a minute or two in the morning, though you will need to come in for trims more often than you would with a longer style. If you’re already silver and you’ve been thinking about going shorter, this is a really good option to bring to your next appointment.

Elegant Layered Shag with Soft Face-Framing Bangs

#25 Layered Shag with Soft Face-Framing Bangs

Everything about this cut is soft, the bangs, the layers, the way it falls just below the shoulders with this effortless quality that looks like you didn’t try at all even though the cut is actually very deliberate. The blended highlights are doing great work here too, they add brightness around the face without creating obvious lines or chunks of color. Fine hair really benefits from a cut like this because it builds in volume and movement that you’d otherwise have to create with products and tools every morning. I will say the layers do need regular attention to keep them defined, once they grow out too far the shape gets lost and it can start to look a little shapeless.

Chic Layered Shag with Soft Face-Framing Highlights

#26 Layered Shag with Soft Face-Framing Highlights

This is a solid, reliable, really flattering cut and sometimes that’s exactly what you want… not something trendy that you’ll regret in six months but something that genuinely works with your face and your hair and your life. The shoulder-length layers add volume where most women want it, through the mid-lengths and at the crown, and the face-framing highlights are placed right where they’ll do the most good. It’s versatile enough that you can style it differently depending on the day, and the texture built into the cut means it looks good even when you haven’t put much effort in. For fine to medium hair this is one of those cuts I recommend a lot because it just consistently looks great.
