Black to Wild Cherry Ombre

How would you describe this look?

This look is a red to black ombre but with some balayage tendencies in the way that we blended out up top. Honestly, this is one of the favorite things I’ve ever done. I love big chops (which this was), the contrast of red and black and above all – I love me some flat iron curls!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Keep in mind that this will be fairly high maintenance. Black contrasts highly with any regrowth that is not also black, so you will need to go and get your roots retouched periodically as well as possibly the red if it fades, which vibrant colors have a tendency to do.

A color-safe shampoo is a must. Listen to your stylist’s recommendations and then take them. Professional shampoos do cost more but will help maintain that very vibrant color that you’ve just spent so much time and money on.

Also, take your stylist’s recommendation on where the red starts. Some face shapes look best with it starting more at temples, some at cheeks, others at the chin. Understand that what is going to make you look good might not look exactly the same on someone else. This client had a fairly round face shape, so I blended high but if you have a heart shape, it would look better with the red starting at the chin.

Again, listen to your stylist and actually discuss with them what is going to be the best placement and shade. This also is a color that you will get compliments for, so if you’re not afraid of people telling you how great you look all the time, this is definitely right up your alley!

How would you describe this look?

This look is fun and funky with a cool violet base color and pops of vibrant red highlights! I love the contrast between the colors in this style.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This red and black hair color can be worn on all types of hair. Generally, it works best on someone who likes loud and bright colors! Vibrant tones such as this one last longer on clients who don’t wash their hair every day. As with any red hair color, I always advise that my clients use color safe products when washing and styling!

How would you describe this look?

This balayage was so much fun to create. It is full of dimension with hints of red and violet giving us this perfect plum color that is perfect for the fall! She can style is straight or curly and it will look fabulous either way.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Although it looks amazing and will definitely make you stand out in a crowd, it is a lot of maintenance. These red and black hair colors do tend to fade more quickly than natural colors, so be prepared to visit the salon every 4-6 weeks to keep it looking fresh.

Using a professional shampoo for color-treated hair along with a heat protectant before any heat styling will help the longevity of your color. Almost anyone who is ready for these commitments and has the confidence can 100% rock this look!

How would you describe this look?

This look is a stacked A-line bob. The color I did was a chocolate brown with auburn highlights. This is a great look for brunettes wanting to add some depth and dimension to their color, especially for the fall season.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is great on an angular shaped face. It really accentuates the jawline and cheekbones. This particular client has very thick, silky straight hair, but with a good root booster and a round brush, this is achievable for fine hair also. The best advice I can give is finding an excellent stylist who will consult with you and find out what styles/colors will bring out your best features.

How would you describe this look?

This is a red balayage. The base color is my client’s natural hair color. We gave her highlights with a balayage technique, so it looks natural and the growing out stages are not severe. The haircut is a long bob below the shoulders with layers at the bottom.

I love that the color is flattering on many skin types, and because it’s a balayage, it will look good as it grows in. My clients don’t have to worry as much to keep it updated. I love this haircut because it’s short enough to be playful but long enough to tie up in a ponytail. I like giving my clients looks that are versatile.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Someone who is considering this look needs to realize that red is one of the hardest colors to keep fresh-looking in the hair. It fades the fastest, so if you are considering it, you have to be willing to go in and get it refreshed every 6 to 8 weeks. This re-toning service is about an hour long. Also, if you tend to have red undertones in your skin, I would not recommend going red.

How would you describe this look?

This look is an edgy dimensional look. The best part about it is the density of the highlights. We did a high-density foil to make sure the overall look was 50% red.

Any advice for someone considering it?

To a client considering this look, I’d say if you have dark hair and are looking to change things up without committing to going lighter all over, this is a fun option for you! To mimic the style, I would only recommend this cut/style to someone that is comfortable with using hot tools to curl the hair. I also recommend using a styling foam and a sugar/salt texture spray.

How would you describe this look?

This is a multi-tonal angled bob with a dutch braid. I love adding braids to styles, as they add texture and are the perfect way to show off the colors in the hair.

Any advice for someone considering it?

You need to be willing to invest in the right home care products to keep the color bright and vibrant. Red and violet tones are not low maintenance. They are prone to fading faster than other colors.

I would recommend using a color-safe shampoo with a color depositing conditioner. I also recommend washing every second day at most and using cool water. It really does make a difference. Hot water is very hard on the color!

Hairstylist / Colorist @ Gallery of Hair in Chicago, IL

How would you describe this look?

It’s an ombré alternative. The best part about it was that I didn’t have to bleach anything. The client came in with the hair already bleached by a previous stylist. It was not a pretty blonde nor was it blended. What I love most about these looks is creating seamless lines, especially when it comes to natural vs fashion colors.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If your hair isn’t already bleached, keep in mind you will have to be lifted pretty light for the colors to hold on to. Also, maintenance is a priority. From the stylists’ perspective, we spend so much time giving you the look you want, and from the clients perspective, you sit with us for a few hours trying to obtain a certain look and then you go home and use cheap products that eat away all the color. Hair colors do not discriminate. This look can be done on anyone who wants to have a little more pop color but if you’re one to wash your hair every day and not care and just want it so bad because it looks cool, then lets talk about a different look that will make you feel and look good and suit your lifestyle a little better.

How would you describe this look?

This is a warm, dimensional copper! We kept her natural base for low maintenance but she wanted something fun for the fall! This is also a balayage.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This tone isn’t good for all skin tones, so that is a factor that should be discussed during a consultation. Red/copper tones tend to fade faster, so usually, clients will need to return for toner appointments to keep the copper fresh! They will need to invest in products that are safe for colored hair! Red and black hair color needs a good balance of treatment.
