How would you describe this look?

This purple ombre hair color is fun modern. My client is a teacher and normally prefers a more natural look but is now on maternity leave and wanted to have some fun. I love playing with funky colors on a dark base to make the rich color pop! If placement is on point, you can sport this look straight or curled but I love when texture really shows off the contrast.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If this style is something you would like to try, keep in mind that fun colors can be a little more maintenance. Choose a color that will fade out nicely if you don’t want to be visiting the salon too frequently. But also as the color fades it can give you a great excuse to try a new different color!

I love this length of hair because you can do anything and everything with it! Your hair won’t take too long to style and can also be worn in a bun or ponytail when you need your hair out of your face.

How would you describe this look?

This look is a long layered cut with purple ombré hair color. I styled this using a one-inch curling iron because I love the way the waves in her hair show off that pop of purple on her ends.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Know how vivid hair colors like the purple on the ends are very temporary. We chose to do just her ends purple so it was easier for her to touch up with colored conditioner (she uses the Brand Overtone) in between her color appointments.

She also works in a hospital so she needed something she was able to hide in a bun during work. We left her natural color at the base of her hair so when her hair is tied back in a bun, the purple is somewhat hidden. Whenever I have professional women who want fun colors in their hair I suggest this method so they can do just that.

Blue and Purple

How would you describe this look?

This look is a dark aqua blue to a magenta color melt. I love these colors together because while they are on the darker side they are also still very pigmented. This look will last a long time.

Any advice for someone considering it?

First, you have to consider the type of career you may have because unfortunately, not every workspace allows this type of individuality. Also, you have to be willing to upkeep the proper way so the color will last as long as possible, such as washing with cold water and using color safe products. Like anything else we do for ourselves, hair comes with a commitment.

Purple and Blue Ombre

How would you describe this look?

When I did this hair, I thought berrylicious! It reminds me of delicious blueberries and blackcurrants with their rich colors and sweet taste. The cut elevates the color with long layers that are flattering to most face shapes and are super versatile. When worn curly (as seen here), the layers give curls a yummy softness, and when worn straight, the style is cool and edgy.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I used a vegetable dye to achieve this bright color which can fade quickly if not treated with good quality products at home. Look for products that not only protect color but also nourish your hair. My clients use KMS Moist Repair Shampoo and Conditioner coupled with Goldwell Dualsenses Color Extra Rich 60s Treatment. The color is vibrant, fun, and sure to turn heads, so if you prefer to be a wallflower, this style might not be for you.

How would you describe this look?

This look is a “Dusty Purple Ombré.” The prettiest thing about this particular look is the vibrancy of the purple color. It’s very flattering on various skin tones.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Keep in mind the upkeep. You must keep washing at a minimum, use color-safe shampoo, turn down the temperature on your tools, and reschedule a color refresh with your stylist!

Purple is the perfect color to try if you’re looking to spice up your color in a way that it will fade out to a beautiful blonde if you let it go. Although, it will not last long if not following the instructions above.

Also, keep in mind it may take a few appointments before you achieve this purple ombre hair color. This particular client was in my chair for around 5 hours. We had to first create the ombré and then apply the purple color.

This purple ombre hair color will work on all hair types and textures but it may take time to get there depending on what color you start out as. (The blonder, the better)

It also the perfect way to spice up an old ombré or balayage highlights!

Deep Purple

Q&A with style creator, Kaili Miles
Owner / Stylist @ Wild&Free Hair Studio in Paso Robles, CA

How would you describe this look?

This a purple ombré done by balayage plank application as the first step, and the second step is a color-melt using pulp riot purple color velvet and lilac, mixing custom colors through zone 2 and 3.

The hair to me seems to come alive with these piercing vivid hair color styles. It makes all the time for appointments in vivid coloring worth every minute!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Consider the total appointment costs. Take note that the longevity of color is minimal, lasting 2-3 weeks with little cold hair washing.

I recommend a color shampoo and conditioner with color pigment and color-save like Celeb Luxury Gem Lites Colorwash that’s available in an array of colors!

Red and Purple Hair Color

Q&A with style creator, Melissa Hartlove
Hairstylist @ Elsewhere Salon in Wilmington, NC

How would you describe this look?

This is an ombré with a copper-based red at the root to the mid shaft that transitions to purple towards the middle to end of the hair shaft. This client’s hair is cut to a long bob at zero elevation with texture added by slid cutting in the crown area.

It’s cured using a two-inch wand, wrapping each section around the wand one and a half times. The waterfall braid shows how fun and dimensional the color is.

The coolest part of this style is the translations of colors and the movement of the hair! It’s also good for clients who want a fun color but don’t want to lighten their hair too much, as you only need to lighten your to a level 7 to achieve this bright purple.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Be patient with the lightening process and listen to your stylist. Also, the purple used in this color is a direct dye and is not permanent, so if you shampoo your hair every day it will fade fast (I would recommend using a color-safe shampoo and a dry shampoo to stretch out your shampooing days). On the other hand, being as the color isn’t permanent it opens a world of possibilities for other colors!

Platinum Blonde to Purple Coloring

How would you describe this look?

I love how versatile this purple ombre hair color can be transformed. This client is a military wife and mom who just isn’t ready to give up her sassy style because of motherhood or her husband’s formal events. We keep her blonde bright while adding a shadow root to keep her regrowth looking more natural.

The purple ombré with the lavender blend creates depth within her hair while giving it a fun twist which can sometimes not be the case for vivid hair. She can easily style it into a classic chignon or bun for formal events, while still showing her personality.

Any advice for someone considering it?

For anyone considering any vivid color, just know, that they fade. Like a lot! Every time you wash your hair you will literally see the color go down the drain. So, for people that wash their hair every day, or more than twice a week that is something to keep in mind. With that, vivid colors can also take a lot of time and patience to remove. So when deciding on a bright and fun color, just know that it will be a commitment to your hair. But usually well worth it!

Q&A with style creator, Tina Ong
Hairstylist / Colorist / Owner @ Ave 65 Salon in San Gabriel Valley, CA

How would you describe this look?

I love the fun color element for this purple ombre hair color. The purple hair color combination blended very well. The long layers added a lovely volume. With styling, you get a glam look. Without styling, you get an edgy feel due to the purple.

Any advice for someone considering it?

First and foremost, before considering any fun colors, make sure your employer allows it. I have clients who requested the color only to have it return to their natural color due to the restriction at their work environment.

The coloring and processing part takes a great amount of time and it would be all for nothing if you could not go out with the color on a daily basis. After obtaining this color, I highly recommend that you stay away from swimming (indoor, esp with bleach or outdoor facilities/areas) or avoid washing your hair for the next couple of days. To extend the color, using dry shampoo in between wash is best. To help keep hair healthy, use a leave-in hair treatment every two weeks. Maintaining colored hair requires a lot of attention and dedication. However, the color is worth it!
