This summer, it’s all about being adventurous, from pretty pastel pink and teal streaks through platinum blonde hair, to darker blue hues against brunette locks, notes Clairol Color Director Marie Robinson. “On the flip side, we’re also seeing women gravitate towards more ‘corporate appropriate’ shades, such as beautiful rose gold blondes and warm shades of buttery brunette, which are easily achieved at home and provide intense color,” she says.
So how do you know what type of hue will look hottest on you? When it comes to more vibrant, stand-out colors, like pastels, Marie points out that these work best against base hair color shades that will truly make them pop, such as platinum or light-to-medium blonde hair. “If you’re going for fun, cotton candy colored hues or bold teals, keep the color to the ends of your hair so they’re easy to trim off, as darker shades can stain,” she says.
As far as rose gold blonde shades go, these work best on women who have naturally light hair and are looking for a subtle boost of color. “Rose gold complements all skin tones, especially women with fair skin and light eyes. Dark blondes or brunettes, on the other hand, will look great with a beautiful, buttery brunette shade, as the subtle burst of color effortlessly transforms brown shades with intense warm hues and copper tones.”

For those hoping to make a more drastic color change, such as going two or more shades from their current hair color, Marie recommends visiting a salon for the best results. If you’re looking for a commitment-free way of embracing standout color, like the pastel streak trend, try colorful clip-in extensions or hair chalk, she says. “Clip-ins are great if you’re having trouble deciding on a particular shade or if you just want to have the flexibility to switch up your hair color depending on your mood.”
Warm It Up
If you’re seeking a more subtle, but punchy transformation at home, like warming up a brunette hue or trying a rose gold blonde, Marie suggests Clariol Nice ‘n Easy Color Blend Foam in Medium Golden Blonde or Medium Golden Brown, respectively. “The foam formula is easy to apply, mess-free and delivers dimensional color with a gorgeous blend of tones and highlights.” However, keep the following in mind, she notes:
• Be sure to pick the right tone! Knowing if you’re warm, cool or neutral will ensure a flawless look head-to-toe.
• Before you color, apply Vaseline to your hairline to avoid getting extra color on your skin.
• Always check the box to see if your hair should be dry or damp before coloring.
