Steal the Show With 1920’s Taylor Swift VMA Hair

While we’ll leave the topic of Taylor Swift’s behavior to all those celebrity gossip glossies and tabloid sites, we will gush about how gorgeous she looked at the 2013 MTV VMAs. The country singer starlet showed up on the red carpet looking mighty pretty in her plunging gown and bright red pucker, but it was her soft sea of retro curls that stole the show.

“I love it because it’s classy on her and gives off a soft, vintage ’20s look,” says Josue Perez, celebrity hairstylist at Serge Normant. He’s worked his magic on many A-list celebs with enviable coiffures, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz, just to name a few.

With the help of Perez, we’re going to break down Taylor Swift’s VMA hair so that you — yes, you! — can recreate this look at home.

How to Get Taylor’s ’20s VMA Hair:

Step 1: Section Off Hair

“Divide the hair into six vertical sections in the front of the head. Perez says to “picture a crown, just using the front portion of the hair.” Then, using a 1-1/4 inch curling iron, such as Rowenta Curl Active, curl each section individually. “As you curl, spray each section with hairspray and brush through,” he instructs. “Let it set and cool down for a few minutes.”

Step 2: Comb It

“Grab a wide tooth comb and brush out the curl a little bit. Then customize how far to the side you want your part to be.” says Perez. Try this Cricket Conditioning Oil Comb, which smooths and separates hair without removing any body or curl. It’s also infused with various oils to tame and nourish your locks.

Step 3: Pin It

On either side of your head, carefully pin sections of your hair back with bobby pins. As you pin, create those classic vintage waves by allowing some of the hair to curl forward. You may need to finesse your curls, but be patient and use hairspray to help you out.

Step 4: Create a Faux Bob

“For the back, wave the hair using a smaller styler, such as the Rowenta Versa Style, to create very loose waves,” advises Perez. “Pin up to the nape of your neck using bobby pins to create a faux bob look like Taylor’s.”

Step 4: Make It Last

To make this gorgeous ’20s hairstyle last throughout the evening, Perez recommends using a healthy dose of flexible hold hairspray (try Neuma’s neuControl Medium hairspray) and enough bobby pins to secure your hair. Make sure the bobby pins you use match the color of your hair.
