How would you describe this look?

My favorite thing about this look is that it’s seamless. It gives dimension with the previous color that she came in with. She wanted a softer look, so the angle in the graduation isn’t as extreme but more rounded.

We worked with the longest length she already had in front, so creating the angle in the back like that gave it an illusion that it was more of an A-line than it really was.

My favorite thing about this inverted bob cut is that she had a great hairline at her neck/nape area. We got to work with a more wispy vibe, and it hugs the neckline, creating a more of a feminine look in the back.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Round brush the back and touch up with a flat iron in the front. I only work with TIGI products, and I used Small Talk by Bed Head in her hair. When you apply heat to this product, it swells the cuticle creating a thicker feel and it smooths frizz as well.

I also used Head Rush by Bed Head that is a very lightweight shine spray. I did this because it would give a fuller look smooth the frizz and put back the shine that sometimes highlighting or a chemical process can take out.

She has a great face shape for this cut. The layers and bangs in the front are going to show off more roundness, so when picking this cut, keep that in mind. This is an on-the-go quick style. Also, wearing it with a natural texture *applying sea salt spray* would also give it a cute look.

How would you describe this look?

It’s a fashion-forward, chic asymmetrical bob with disconnection. My favorite part about this look is that it makes a bold statement while still retaining a classy feminine flair.

Just having the courage to wear something short is a statement in itself, but coupled with asymmetric geometry along with a cropped down disconnected area in one side, it just screams confidence.

What you see on the outside is a perfect reflection of what’s on the inside.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Suitability! Now I’m not just talking on an aesthetic level. As a stylist, my biggest motto is to never compromise suitability for the sake of creativity.

Whatever we wear has to complement our features just like any article of clothing, especially if you’re going to crop out an area like the disconnected side of this look.

Anytime you go short like this, you will be exposing features that could be a good thing or a bad thing. That’s the aesthetic side of it.

It also has a great deal to do with persona. You have to have the personality and confidence to wear it. Liking something doesn’t mean that one will be comfortable wearing it. It could be the most perfect haircut in the world but if one doesn’t feel comfortable wearing it, it will never be the best haircut for them. This is a look that has to match a certain confidence level.

Jaw Length Graduation

This is great for easing up your nape but still flaunting some lengthier locks towards the face. Truly works wonders for face shapes with sharper edges.

How would you describe this look?

This look is one of my favorite because of the color, the cut, and the whole finish. The bob cut is a very personalized cut, so you have to be very specific with the layering and texturizing part for the cut to look complete. Then, the color comes in and makes the whole look pop.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I always take a look at the pictures that my clients bring and custom make it for them based on their face type, hair type, and lifestyle. Also, it depends on how much time they spend styling it. I gather all this info and try to simplify for the client, so they would not be overwhelmed about all this information and still achieve the look that they’re going for.

Choppy Bob

Delicate strands stand out with some nice uneven layers on this choppy bob. Have a messy, shaggy hairstyle while keeping it all organized.

How would you describe this look?

This style is a textured graduated bob. We wanted to give the boring mom bob a twist, so we wanted a shattered finish that gives the style more versatility and a more modern feel to it. She has an all-over color. With a bob, it can make it quite block looking, so that’s another reason why we wanted to really texturize it – to break it up.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This haircut is really easy to style, as the graduation at the back makes the hair go under. Because the rest of the style is shattered, it doesn’t have to be perfect like a normal-precision cut bob. You could blast this style with the hairdryer and apply a small amount of wax, and you’re ready to leave the house.

My client is a working mom who doesn’t have too much time in the morning. This style works on all hair types, and because there is length around the face, it adds softness which works for most face shapes.

Graduated Wavy Hair

The more layers, the fuller the waves will get. That’s the secret to a healthy, bouncy, fun-looking bob!

How would you describe this look?

This is one of my easy to-go bob where the client doesn’t have to spend hours on styling it. Clients looking for a change and concerned about the length can choose this kind of haircut.

I have created this look keeping in my mind the length which gives good volume and shape. My favorite thing about this look is it’s not very short but edgy and suits every face shape.

For styling, I used volumizing spray on the roots and softly paddle dried her hair. Then, I used my large size tong and did a soft out curl.

Any advice for someone considering it?

There is no specific face shape but hair type (wavy) required for this look. I did this on a client who wanted lots of volume because she had fine hair, and when it comes to styling people with fine hair, you can use a volumizing spray or mousse on the roots, use tongs to create the movement, and finish with a brushable hair spray.

Chin Length Bob

Graduated chin-length bobs keep getting trendier and trendier! Ending at the chin would round up the face and highlight the chin.

Q&A with style creator, Dave Arter

How would you describe this look?

I describe this cut as a razor graduated bob (which is probably my favorite cut of all time). For this photo, I styled it with a more classic look. But with a little bit of a texture spray or clay, this cut would look disheveled, young, and fun with structure.

I did color her hair by using paper-thin slices with lightener to create a very blended look that will grow out tastefully.

I styled her hair by round brushing first, then finishing off with the flat iron following the shape set by the round brush.

Any advice for someone considering it?

For a client wanting a bob like this, I would suggest that they are comfortable with their neck being exposed. This cut is very flattering and can elongate the neck and bring attention to the jaw. If those are qualities on your self that you don’t want to attract attention to, this might not be the cut for you. But if you love those features, rock on.

To style this cut, on towel-dried hair, I used a little bit of a volumizing spray at the root area (Dallas by R and Co) and a little bit of leave-in conditioner on the kids and ends (High Dive by R and Co). With a medium-sized round brush, I set in my shape, and then once dry, I refine my blow dry with the flat iron (high heat). I finished this look with (dry texturizing spray by Oribe) for the lift at the crown.

The ideal hair type for this look would be wavy to straight, but this bob looks great on all types and textures of hair! They always say that the ideal face shape is oval, but I really believe that when we are cutting or coloring hair, we (the hairstylists) are trying to create a look that suits the vision of how you the client see yourself. So throw out the idea of ideal face shape – if you feel good about yourself and comfortable wearing a bob, do it!

This hairstyle is great for all lifestyles – if you’re professional or sporty. My favorite way to see this cut being worn is one side tucked or even both. I think it’s very classy, sexy, confident, fun, and all the other superlatives you can think of!
