One of my favorite haircuts over the last few years was for a woman over fifty years old. I remember it clearly because she came in almost ready to talk herself out of getting the haircut. She had super long hair that reached her back, which she had been growing for years. She said “I don’t want to look like I gave up” which makes my job a little harder because, to me, a chin length bob is not giving up. It takes confidence to make that decision and a commitment to change. When I spun her around to face the mirror, she was quiet for a bit, then said, “oh, there I am.” That is the power of a good bob. It doesn’t make you younger, but it does make you look like yourself again.
I want you to appreciate the details of this cut. I’m guessing the shine in her chestnut color is a mix of a gloss treatment and the color itself, and I really appreciate the warmth of the caramel highlights woven into the face-framing pieces.

These layers provide a lot of vertical height at the top. They also avoid taking removing lateral length, which is one of the hardest things to do in a chin length bob. The bob is even slightly rounded at the corners. This will soften what could otherwise be a very graphic cut. Expect to maintain bangs this sharp every three to four weeks. Most people also ignore the fact that bangs are high maintenance and can require a lot of warmth. Highlights in bangs/ fringes can definitely add warmth. However, if you don’t keep up with your bangs in a reasonable 3-4 week timeframe, you will inevitably find yourself pinning the bangs back and it will become a question of why you ever decided to get bangs in the first place.

Usually, this is the kind of bob I go with for clients since it works for a lot of different people. The layers are soft and texturized, the length is right at the chin, and it just falls into place after a blow dry. What I like about this one in particular is the uneven waves; some are more smooth and some are more bent. It looks more lived in and less overdone. You’ll want to keep up with trims every 6 weeks because once those ends start to split, the texture goes from looking intentional to just messy.

It’s doing the heavy lifting in terms of asymmetry and it would be super easy to switch your part and make it look a lot more symmetrical if you wanted a different vibe on other days.

If you have been considering growing out your silver hair or getting a cut that celebrates your silvers, take a look at this one. The layers and texture give the silver a lot of dimension as different strands reflect the light differently. The chin length cut adds a nice touch and avoids the common concern of the hair looking a mess, a concern I absolutely understand. The silvers mix light and dark, which is what gives depth. If your natural grays are coming in a patchy pattern, your colorist will be able to get you an even silver look with some toning sessions.

We receive haircuts where a client will stroll in 3 weeks later and say, “I don’t know what you did, but my hair has never looked this good between appointments.” In this case, I think it has to do with the layers. I would say the one thing to keep an eye out for is crown frizz; a little smoothing serum patted onto the upper layers takes care of that beautifully.

This polished style is versatile enough to work in a boardroom or at a farmers market. This style is perfect for straight hair and is ideal for a wash and wear finish. I would recommend using a flat iron to get a shiny polished look to the front. And just so we’re clear, if you want volume, then I would not recommend this style. It’s flat and smooth, and that’s the goal with this look.

The end layering on this looks so light it’s as if the stylist went in and point cut some texture into the last inch, which results in the curls falling in various ways. Instead of all of them curling under in the same way, they spread out and go in different directions, which looks incredibly natural and effortless. This is a great cut for people who have been straightening their hair for years and are ready to give the fight up, as the shape really supports whatever your hair wants to do.

I love how the curls are not crunchy like wet curls that have loads of gel and other hold products. The chin-length cut draws the eye to the jawline and really flatters the cheekbones. It really is worth spending the time to get the shape exactly how you want with this curl pattern as the curls are really soft and bouncy, chin length is perfect as it also frames the face. The curls here are working with the haircut, which is great to see. The shape was intended to come with the natural curl pattern, which is the only way I think you could do this style. It is a low maintenance style for sure, but you will have to manage the length as curly hair will lose all the lovely bounce once it grows past the ideal length and the weight will pull the curls out.

The silver waves are beautiful! I must say my favorite part of silver hair is watching the light reflect off of it. The movement makes the hair look alive. The framing layers are quite soft and I think they really contribute to the overall softness you add to your look. The hair would feel way more blunt without those layers. Keeping the silver looking fresh may require a bit of work. You might consider using purple shampoo to avoid brassy tones, but other than that it is a low maintenance color!
#49 Bangs and Texture, a Combination I Rarely Say No To
I love cutting soft bangs on textured bobs. There is real artistry that goes into making a style look effortless, such as deciding how long to cut the bangs, how much texture to add to the ends, and where to position the longest and shortest layers. All these elements combined give the impression the client was born with incredible hair! The bangs plus the wavy texture give a model off duty vibe with everything soft around the forehead and eye area.
For thicker hair, I would suggest some interior weight removal so the ends don’t appear bulky. Aside from that, this style is very flattering on most people.
#50 Silver Bob That Doesn’t Need a Single Apology
Women often feel the need to justify their decision to go silver, as if they have to prove they’re still trying. This cut helps with that, as it is an effort, and is a beautiful, modern, sharp, and intentional choice. The layers help the hair to not look limp, and the styling helps the color to shine, especially since that silver is OUTSTANDING. If your hair is fine and straight naturally, this is one of the low maintenance cuts, since all you need is a blow dry and maybe some volumizing mousse at the roots.

Can we appreciate this color? It is stunning. The shade is warm coppery auburn, which looks like sunlight in autumn, and brings this entire haircut to life in a way that a neutral brown just wouldn’t. It is also great that the face framing layers are softening the jaw on the cut without being too obvious. Overall, the shape of the cut is polished and says I have a great stylist, which is the goal. This color does fade quicker than others so you will want a color depositing shampoo between salon visits to keep it looking fresh, but honestly nothing is more beautiful than this when it is fresh.
#52 Classic Bangs, Classic Bob, Nothing Trendy and That’s the Point
This is the bob I would do for someone asking to keep it very ’employed professional’ but still a bit more unique and not going to get dated in 6 months. The soft bangs are sitting right where they should, just brushing the brow and have enough texture to them so they don’t look heavy/old. The body of the hair is left alone so it has that effortless I literally just rolled out of bed look when in reality the cut is really precise. I’m not going to pretend that bangs don’t take regular trims to keep them looking this good, but if you’re willing to come in every few weeks for a bang trim, then the rest of this cut will take care of itself.
