A Beach Babe Bob Has That Relaxed Look You Can’t Fake

While waiting in line at a hardware store, I saw a woman who had a bob haircut that had probably not seen the beach in six months. She was wearing a puffer coat and her hair looked like she had just come off a dock on the Mediterranean. What people seem to misunderstand with this haircut style is that the beach part of the name refers to the hair surviving the cut and still retaining its shape, texture, and movement. A bob that looks good when styled but not good when left… is not a bob.

The key to this haircut style is the inner layers and effects of weight distribution. There should be just enough hair in the wave so that it doesn’t become a single heavy mass. I find that the bobs that people get in their own lives and keep coming back for, tend to be longer than what they asked for by about half an inch. This is because the extra length creates more wave space without it becoming bouncy.

Collections in this space hold the same characteristic, offering the impression that they have already been lived in for several days, and that is precisely the point.

Before and after long to short wavy beach bob transformation

#1: The Big Chop Beach Bob

This is the best before and after because you can see how much texture was hidden when the hair was longer. The long version looks so weighed down and a little tired. The bob version of the same hair has so much volume and movement, and there’s a wave pattern that was always there but couldn’t show because of the weight. The cut is chin length with lived-in texture and the slight ends highlights look like they’ve been in the longer hair. This is the transformation that makes clients cry in the chair.

Wavy bob with wispy curtain bangs and blonde highlights

#2 The Wispy Bangs Beach Wave

The bangs really make this one, and they’re done just right: thin, wispy, subtly parted in the center and long enough to blend into the face-framing pieces instead of sitting as a separate element. With a beach bob, bangs can be tricky since humidity and salt water will do who-knows-what to them, but this length and weight mean they’ll just push to the side and blend in instead of curling up into something you didn’t want. The blonde highlights through the wave brighten it up without washing out the warmth of the base color.

Chin-length wavy copper red bob with natural-looking texture

#3 The Copper Penny Wave

This is a true copper color that sits nicely between red and strawberry blonde, so I saved it for last since it is the most unusual color in the group. Copper tones emphasize every wave in the hair naturally, and are especially pronounced with light and shadow contrast. The effect is very evident in this example. The style is quite basic; chin length bob with loose waves. The color however, makes it look custom and not very generic. To maintain the brightness, this color depositing conditioner is a game changer between salon appointments.

Chin-length wavy bob with bangs and warm balayage ends

#4 The Cobblestone Curl

The balayage on the lower half gives a sunset effect and looks great with the soft curtain bangs that frame the face and do not distract from the wave. This is a cut that will grow out nicely, with bangs merging with the face-framing layers and the bob transforming into a lob over the course of a few months. The built-in longevity shows this stylist thinks beyond the chair.

Wavy chin-length bob with dark to blonde ombré transition

#5 The Twilight Ombré

The color gradient is more sudden than your average balayage, and the ombré effect actually works well for the beach bob. The dark roots and mid-lengths anchor the look, while the light ends illuminate and attract attention to the waves. It’s more striking than the rest of the roundup, and the right person will appreciate the all-over blonde richness it lacks. The color stops at the mid-lengths which contrast the light ends perfectly, and the center part evens the whole look out. The waves are soft and wide, the kind that naturally air dry when you twist your hair into two sections.

Short brunette wavy bob with warm highlights on rooftop

#6 The Rooftop City Wave

A bob with a beachy wave is a good style especially with smaller sized people. It has crown and temple volume focus rather than on the ends, so it gives an overall uplift and energetic look without adding bulk at the jaws. The warm highlighted pieces are sparingly and strategically placed to the front. The architecture does most of the cutting work, and the color is secondary. I always find these more interesting to look at.

Short wavy bob with ash blonde color and dark shadow root

#7 The Ash Blonde Shadow Root

The cool ashy shade here is set apart from the warmer blondes in this collection, plus the shadow root is deep enough that this can go three months between color appointments without it looking too neglected. The wave has a slight crinkle to it instead of a smooth S-pattern which adds to the raw unpolished look and feel of the texture. This is a bob that could easily fit in a corporate environment and at a Saturday farmers market, which is a harder range to get than it sounds.

Textured chin-length blonde bob with dark roots and waves

#8 The Denim Shirt Blonde

It’s a bit messy, unassuming, and definitely nonchalant, though that is almost always a sign some thought went into it. The roots are intentionally kept quite deep with around an inch and a half of uncolored hair before the blonde haze takes over, and the ends look quite tapered and texturized. This hair would look exactly the same after swimming, napping, or a windy drive with the windows down, and frankly that versatility is the entire test of whether a beach bob succeeds or fails.

Chin-length tousled brunette bob with caramel highlights

#9 The Date Night Undone

It’s the asymmetry that’s most interesting here; the dominant left side is reaching forward while the right side is pulled u200cback. It’s all so relaxed and lived-in, rather than posed. The caramel highlights are threaded through in pieces that are slight and uneven so that they capture the light in different ways with movement of the hair. Her shape is overall disheveled in that way which i think takes more skill than the more clean-cut bob styles. The only thing I would recommend is a u200ctexturizing sprayU200c on dry hair.

Shoulder-length wavy bob with dark roots and copper ends

#10 The Copper-Lit Lob

The warm copper tones at the ends are almost auburn and create a lovely gradient with the dark roots. It has a lot of dimension but it’s not busy. This is on the longer side of bob length, almost a lob, and extra length gives the wave a wider arc that looks more relaxed. Medium to thick hair types would get the most out of this shape. Finer hair would lose the volume through the mid length that makes the silhouette work.

Dark wavy bob with bangs and natural texture at chin length

#11 The Mountain Porch Wave

Completely dark hair with no highlights, a full curtain bang, and a wave that looks truly natural instead of heat styled. If this is genuinely natural curly or wavy hair that’s been cut well and left un styled, it is one of the most sincere looks in this whole round up. The length is plenty enough to pull into a small ponytail when needed, which is more than most people think when deciding on a bob. The bangs are a tiny bit longer at the sides, which softens any width in the face without being too obvious.

Short tousled brunette bob with caramel accents and bangs

#12 The Brunette Brick Lane

The defining feature of this cut is its piece-iness. Each section has an individually placed look, which is a sign of good texturizing with a razor or point-cutting shears (as opposed to thinning shears, which would cause a fuzzy look rather than an intentional one). The way the caramel accents are positioned is so subtle that depending on the lighting, they would likely be interpreted as natural variation in the brunette base. I like the slightly undone fringe here; it’s just long enough to get pushed to the side without any pins.

Chin-length wavy shag bob with bangs and subtle highlights

#13 The Mountain Lodge Shag Bob

This collection has a shag influence, and while other variations include longer layers, this one has shorter layers at the crown which create a rounded, more lifted look, and longer layers at the nape of the neck. The bangs are less even and more choppy than the previous look, which adds to the overall casual, retro look. I think this is the kind of cut where the stylist can really imprint their style or stamp on the look. Of the options here, the shaping is most important on this cut over the color or styling.

Chin-length wavy brunette bob with caramel balayage tips

#14 The Caramel-Tipped Café Wave

This bob appears to have been tailored so that one side can be tucked behind the ear while leaning forward at a desk and that is a compliment. The mid-length layering is designed to ensure that softer waves break rather than being overly voluminous around the crown. The caramel balayage hits right where the waves are, making it look like the sun serendipitously caught those pieces. There is definitely an unintentional side-swept bang vibe to this and the length is at that sweet spot where it hits the top of the collarbone without actually touching.

Dark brunette chin-length bob with tousled windswept layers

#15 The Vineyard Tousle

This collection’s darkest bob, and no highlights is a choice I appreciate. It’s all about the cut itself. The back layers are cut slightly shorter for more lift while front pieces are cut longer and fall forward framing the jaw. Dark hair makes texture show as shape instead of color. The slightly windswept style can show off every single layer of the cut. This bob looks perfect with a wrap dress and bare feet, which is probably the whole idea.

Short platinum blonde bob with soft bend and side part

#16 The Platinum Bend

Going platinum with a beach bob could look overdone, but an example of how to show restraint with this style. The wave is super subtle, more of a small bend, and the platinum is kept cool without going into silvery tones. This color is a result of true purple shampoo commitment and regular toner touches. However, the cut is about as low effort as you can get. The side part and the swing of the hair on one side adds a bit of quiet glamour that doesn’t need the beach to justify it.

Chin-length textured blonde bob with natural wave pattern

#17 The Riverside Undone Blonde

I find the rough finish of the texture appealing. The ends are cut to the edge and look a little uneven, making the blonde look less precious. With this sort of cut on medium textured hair, the look improves as it gets a little oily. So it’s one of the rare styles that actually looks better after a few days of not washing your hair. The color is a solid creamy blonde instead of a highlighted dirty blonde, which is a nice touch.

Short wavy blonde bob with dark roots and soft waves

#18 The Mountain Pool Shimmer

At first glance, this looks longer than it actually is. I love how it sits at the jawline with a nice little tuck behind the ear. The warm blonde is free of brassiness, and the choice to keep the darker natural root adds to the overall look of the grow-out. The weight balance is what pushes this cut over the top. Having thicker hair in the back with the sides just skimming below the ear molds that slight forward movement and makes this look like it is all in motion even if it isn’t.

Chin-length wavy brunette bob with warm golden highlights

#19 The Olive Wrap Balayage

A smart design choice has been made with the highlights: the brightest pieces land exactly on the wave crests so the color amplifies the texture instead of just sitting on top of it. This really shows how thoughtful a colorist is when she considers the natural bending of the hair. This should be the goal when describing the difference between painted and grown-out balayage. The overall shape is classic and jaw-length with a center part allowing both sides to fall evenly.

Short wavy bob with dark roots and golden blonde balayage

#20 The Country Road Bob

The bob is very short, golden, and easy to maintain. The edges of the bob may look blunt, but the inside has been razor-textured, which gives the bob that separated, piece-y look without thinning the ends. This is the perfect bob for anyone who wants to wash, scrunch in some sea salt spray, and literally not think about the hair until it is time to wash the hair again.

Wavy chin-length bob with dark roots and sandy blonde ends

#21 The Poolside Blonde

The dark roots mixed with sandy blonde will only get better as the grow-out gets longer, which is pretty rare! These kinds of colors typically require more maintenance. The wavy texture is very natural with some waves being tighter than others, while others are looser. This looks like it’s been created by some braids in damp hair overnight (don’t forget to do a bun as well), or by letting it dry with a twist. There’s a small unevenness which creates the effect of being slightly less finished while still maintaining the overall look of being intentionally undone. Overall it’s a perfect length that gets the hair completely off the shoulders so it won’t get caught under bags and tops!

Short textured bob with blonde highlights and side part

#22 The Garden Party Crop

Unlike other beach bobs, this one is a bit better because it is shorter. It finishes right at the jaw, and with the side part it creates a swept across forehead look that is deliberate rather than accidental. The thing that stands out the most is the blonde highlights that are concentrated on just one side, where the hair falls forward, and catches the light. The cut is very confident considering the length, and suits thick, naturally wavy hair best.

Shoulder-length wavy dark brown bob with subtle highlights

#23 The Middle-Part Midi Wave

The variation that’s just a bit longer sits right at the shoulders, while the center part gives it a clean symmetry that keeps the waves from looking too chaotic. The highlights are very fine and only concentrated around the face on the pieces that fall forward, which is a good idea for anyone who wants dimension without doing full foils. Because of this length, you can stretch your appointments to eight or nine weeks without the shape falling off.

Short curly bob with dark roots and warm caramel highlights

#24 The Curly Girl’s Actual Beach Bob

I really enjoy this piece because it is the only one here with a curl pattern as a focus. Most tend to impose a wave onto straight hair. This piece also features a shape that is wider than it is long, which works perfectly with curls that spring up. The person who made this also got the balance right so the perimeter is a little longer on the sides to account for the shrinkage on the crown. The dark roots melting into warm caramel through the curls give it some depth without that streaky artificial look that people tend to get when highlights are placed in natural curls. All this likely needs is a good curl defining cream and some scrunching when it’s damp.

Wavy chin-length brown bob with soft side-swept bangs

#25 The Warm-Lit Shoulder Brush

This cut is soft because the ends are point cut, meaning each wave tapers instead of finishing bluntly. On finer, straighter hair that has a little natural wave, this type of inner texturizing helps the hair to not fall flat by the afternoon. The brown is a rich, solid color without any highlights, which is so nice to see in a beach bob round up where everyone seems to go for balayage!
