The extra large sections allow for less tension on the scalp since so much hair must be smoothed into one braid. This doesn’t allow the style to last longer than a few weeks, but it makes a statement. Tying down with a silk scarf at night is critical to keep the roots smooth and neat.

These box braids are referred to as “loose” simply because they aren’t chunky in thickness. Removing chunkiness makes the braids feel much lighter. They can easily pull into a ponytail or bun. Although these aren’t very thick, at-home upkeep is needed. Tying down at night and avoiding moisture is still critical for the roots. Use tea tree oil on your parts as needed for itch.

However, Shivonne advises against this style if you’re looking for longevity. “Large knotless usually last about 3 weeks with proper care.” For those with thin or fine hair, Shivonne cautions, “This may be a little heavy for thinner hair types.”
Preparing Your Hair for Braiding
Getting ready for your braiding session is crucial. “Large knotless take between 2 to 2.5 hours,” says Shivonne, depending on a few factors like your hair’s volume and the desired length of your braids. To prep, start with clean, conditioned, and detangled hair. “Use a wide tooth comb and work from tips to roots.” Before blow drying with minimal heat, apply a heat protecting spray to avoid damage.
