Bangs should not distract from your natural hair texture. Instead, bangs should enhance your hairstyle, and compliment your growing out process while keeping the frequent trims to a minimum. All of this is possible if you choose the right bangs.
Bangs are a relationship. To work, bangs need effort from both sides. I recall one of my patients who started coming to me every two weeks. I had to ask other clients to wait because of a long, straight bangs influence from a certain celebrity. After a long time trying to control this, I said, “Let’s allow your hair to take control for once.” We transitioned her to longer center-part bangs for a more subtle curtain bang, and she cried because for the first time her bangs looked incredible without being styled. Easy bangs should look effortless – and that means they should look like you.
Many people underestimate how important the angle of the cut is; it changes depending on whether your hair is fine, thick, or medium. For example, the same wispy bangs that look effortless on medium-density hair can end up looking sad and stringy on fine hair if the layers are not positioned correctly. Also, your wet styling is going to dictate your look the most, and if you blow dry your hair with a vent brush instead of a round one, you will get movement in the hair without that ‘helmet’ look, which makes people regret getting bangs. So, look for styles that match how you actually like to wear your hair.

#1: Soft Waves with That Barely-There Fringe
I really enjoy this cut because it is so low maintenance. I love how it looks even right after I leave the salon! The bangs blend in and grow out with the waves and you won’t have to go in for trims. The mid-length layers provide a nice soft fullness. You get a lot of nice volume with pretty much no work at all. This is a good cut for you if you have naturally wavy and medium thick hair because it will look good every day. You just have to put in a little texturizing spray while it’s damp, give it a scrunch and let it dry.

#2: That Undone Beach Texture with a Soft Fringe
I describe your look as deceptively simple. And perhaps intentionally so, as evidenced in all the detail, texture and layering gone into it. The cut features intentional placement of uneven soft, fringy bangs and highlights, so it will never look like a mistake as it grows out. Overall, these elements provide a sunny disposition and the overall effect should have all the sun-kissed warmth of a California beach. If your hair tends to be fine, the waves will create the volume and fullness you are missing. You may need to add a bit of salt spray to achieve the right degree of mess between washes.

#3: Bouncy Curls with a Soft Bang That Actually Works
Most stylist that do curly bangs know what they are doing. The bangs in this one are a little longer than expected which accounts for the shrinkage when the curls spring up. They lie nicely against the forehead without the awkward triangle shape from cutting curly bangs dry. This look is great because shoulder length allows for full bounce and curls without being weighed down. On a humid day this is going to look even better. A good curl cream is a must for this look to stay defined and nice.

#4: Textured Pixie with Just a Whisper of Fringe
I look for a stylist who is detail-oriented for each part of the cut, and this cut is going to need it because I love how this stylist kept a slightly piecey texture in my fringe. This also helps in achieving a good cut without too much fuss on the top. If you like to wear necklaces, this cut will give you the chance to do so while also showing off your collarbone, back tattoos, and back. Once a pixie cut starts to grow out, the charm really starts to fade so you will have to come in for trims regularly. Other than that, you will have really low-maintenance hair for the time being!

#5: That Shaggy Micro Bang Look
Micro bangs can either make you look incredibly stylish and like you belong on a fashion magazine cover or make you look like you cut your hair yourself with a paper shredder. The difference lies in the amount of texture cut into the rest of the hair. This cut nails it because the shaggy layers support bangs so they can look intentional and a little rock and roll instead of just short. The movement created in the hair helps soften the graphic look created by the bangs. If you have fine to medium hair, this layering will give you volume that you will need to get the body that you wouldn’t otherwise have. Keep in mind that with bangs like this, you can’t push them off to the side on a bad hair day, but when they work, they really work.

#6: Curly Layers with Curtain Bangs That Fall Just Right
When clients are anxious about getting bangs because their hair is curly, this is what I show them. Notice how the curtain bangs integrate with the curly face framing layers? They aren’t disconnected from the rest of the hair. The cut layered cut creates movement all around, and the bangs just become part of the shape. It’s a wash-and-go situation with this style and medium to thick curly hair. You just scrunch your product in while it’s soaking wet, and diffuse for a few minutes if you’re impatient, then walk out the door. You may need a volumizing mousse at the roots if your hair is finer. The curl pattern does most of the work for you.

#7: Rich Layered Lengths with Bangs That Frame Everything
I admire the warm and rich hue of the color. The light that hits each layer gives the hair a nice dimensional look. Lots of movement here, which I love! The framing bangs are weighted enough to not go wispy and flat, which I wish more stylists would do for bangs for medium to thick hair. The ends have a slight wave which keeps the whole look from being overly done. This is the kind of haircut that can go from a Tuesday morning meeting to dinner without any changes. I would say the bangs will need a trim in about three weeks to stay this clean, but the rest of the cut is able to go quite a long time between appointments.

#8: Cropped and Textured with a Fringe That Has Personality
I appreciate the thought that goes into a well done crop. Considering the intricate nature of my request, I’m looking forward to telling my stylist how to do it, layer by layer, angle by angle. The fringe on this keeps it a little playful and not too blunt and the softer look will keep the crop from too harsh. Less serious. I love how the volume through the crown is done with great layering cut into the style, so you don’t have to rely on products to get volume. The added time will be little more than running your fingers through it and heading out, so simple. This shape will work beautifully for you. I’ll be honest though, you’ll probably be in my chair more than you’d like to for maintenance because short cuts lose their shape so fast.

#9: Long and Polished with Blunt Bangs That Mean Business
Long straight hair with blunt bangs is always a classy and bold look. It’s a hairstyle that just says confidence. The long soft layers lose the competition with the bangs, which is a great choice! With bangs that strong, the rest of the hair should definitely be kept simple. Speaking of hair, how amazing is that natural shine? If your hair is lacking that shine, a gloss treatment every few weeks can help with that. Bangs can be high-maintenance, but blunt bangs are extremely high-maintenance. Just a couple millimeters of growth is enough for blunt bangs to sit differently, so if you want a look like this you’ll have to prepare for frequent trims!

#10: Flowing Layers with Blunt Bangs and Beautiful Shine
The different lengths of this haircut come from layers starting around the chin and flowing down, creating a nice frame for any face shape, be it round, angular, or anywhere in between. The bangs are blunt but also not too heavy. If that makes sense. The edges are soft enough for a not so rigid look, and with thick straight hair like this, they will stay in place for easy upkeep. This haircut completely captures the idea of ‘less is more’. You really don’t need to do much to give it a put together look, which is exactly what most of my clients are after when they ask for something maintenance and effortless.

#11: A Gentle Layered Cut with Bangs That Don’t Try Too Hard
What I like about this hairstyle is how light and airy the bangs are. While many people prefer stronger looking bangs and more extreme cuts, I think those can make the whole style look really harsh. I like these bangs because they make the style look softer and more refined. The length being right above the shoulders is super versatile because if you want to tie your hair back in a ponytail, you can do that, and if you just want to have your hair down, that looks intentional too. The layers are subtle which means you won’t lose thickness, you’ll just gain a little movement to the ends. If you’re worried about bangs making your hair look thin, this is the style that I’d recommend. The fringe is a really easy, wispy look to pull off, and it works well with only a small amount of hair going into it.

#12: Layered and Dark with Wispy Bangs
With dark hair like this, the layers really stand out because the movement and texture can be seen easily. The wispy bangs that sit just above the eyes are really great at making the wearer look younger, which can be tough to achieve. The hair is thick and healthy, and this particular cut takes advantage of that by allowing the weight to sit at the ends and layers creating shape in the middle. This is the best way to stop thick hair from looking like a huge curtain of hair. The bangs will get heavy pretty quickly on thick hair, so you’ll want to ensure you get those trimmed a bit more frequently than the rest. Overall, the cut is low maintenance between appointments.

#13: Soft Black Layers with a Wispy Fringe
The rich black color of this haircut adds depth to the style. You can see how the different layers and bangs move as light shifts. The bangs are the right amount of transparent so they don’t cover the layers; they are like a light filter over the forehead. This cut is ideal for medium to thick hair. If the hair is thinner, the layers will not give it enough movement and it will feel bulky and flat on the shoulders The haircut will give the impression that you put more effort into styling it than you really did. The fringe is versatile enough to give you the option to sweep your bangs to the side if you prefer and this cut also gives you the trim that has a nice balance.

#14: Long Glossy Layers with a Soft Fringe
You can tell someone has a routine when their hair is that shiny. The soft bangs will blend in with the longer layers so when they grow out you will have face framing layers instead of looking grown out and that is a huge plus if you end up neglecting your bangs for 6 weeks. The flowing long layers give that polished look with out any styling or choppy look that comes with layers too short.

#15: A Clean Bob with Straight-Across Bangs
A timeless bob with a full fringe is one of the most underrated styles, and this one is ideal. Proportionally, it’s perfect. The length is above the shoulders, the bangs sit just right, and the subtle layering at the ends prevents the style from feeling too blunt and boxy. This cut gives the illusion of more hair on finer to medium hair because of the clean lines that layered cuts sacrifice. The flaring bangs draw a lot of attention to the eyes. You will need to keep up with the shape though. With a bob like this, it can start looking shaggy faster than longer styles. Bangs also need regular cuts to keep them looking crisp.

#16: Long and Sleek with Side-Swept Bangs
Some people want a bang style look but don’t want to go the full route, and I often recommend the side swept bangs option. The side-swept bangs look absolutely gorgeous face framing bangs. They completely alter your look, but in a soft and subtle way, and you don’t have to worry about the awkward phase when growing them out because they blend so well with your layers. For this look, I recommend sleek and shiny hair to get that polished look that isn’t too fussy. It works best on straight medium density hair that has a good smoothing shampoo to help style itself. The best part about this look is that so many people will wonder what your secret is and it will just come down to having a great cut.

#17: Curly Bob with a Wispy Bang That Gets It Right
When getting a bob on curly hair, you have to consider how the hair will fall and dry. This was clearly done by someone who knows what they are doing because the curls frame the face nicely. The bangs are perfect because they are not too heavy to the point where they become too puffy. For hair that is medium to thick and curly, this length is ideal because it is short enough to feel fresh and long enough for the curls to have room to do their thing. I would recommend keeping an anti-frizz serum handy because you will likely be in a scrunch and go situation that will look better the less you touch it.

#18: Long Layers with a Blunt Bang That Keeps Things Interesting
Getting a bang with long layers is a classic combination that works really well, and that is what is going on here. A blunt fringe gives a less dramatic modern look, and the long polished layers really move together in a way that looks expensive. This is a good style for medium straight hair that is pretty low maintenance because the layers will hold their shape for a long time, and it would be stunning to add some soft highlights to those layers.

#19: A Blunt Bob with Fringe That Has Attitude
I always look forward to doing a blunt bob. Each section of the cut requires immense precision, and the end result is so rewarding. With this particular bob, the blunt bangs are really strong and not wispy which makes a huge difference. And with the solid bold dark color, it adds so much more dimension that a lighter color would not. For the hair type of fine to medium, the blunt cut actually makes the hair appear more voluminous, as opposed to making the hair look thinner or texturized by removing some of the density. Because of the nature of a blunt bob, you will need to come in for trims quite often. Once a blunt bob starts growing it loses that clean look and intentionality.

#20: Long Flowing Layers with a Fringe That Feels Effortless
I believe the fringe is most ideal (not perfect because it isn’t stunning obviously), it’s not dropping in a straight line like a ruler would make it, it falls with a softness that makes it seem like it was meant for this face (which is the goal of a bang). The long layers are flowing really nicely and this type of layering seems ideal on thin straight hair of an average thickness because it will create enough texture so the hair doesn’t just sit against the head like a flat lifeless object. I will say bangs on finer hair may become oily looking more quickly than the rest of the hair because those bangs are right up against the forehead. I tell all my clients to keep dry shampoo on them just for their bangs and it really makes an amazing difference.

#21: Dark Blue Waves with a Fringe That Makes the Color Pop
This deep blue is gorgeous! It may appear almost black in lower lighting, but in bright light it will reflect blue and catch people’s eyes! I love this wavy texture because you’ll be able to see the blue from more angles. The diffuse light will refect off the different surfaces. The bangs also help to keep it from being too goth or too costumey. The great thing about going darker is that with dark hair the regrowth is much less noticeable than with lighter fashion colors. Just a heads up, dark blue and purple colors are known to fade quickly with hot water, so make sure to use color safe hair products!

#22: Long Layers with a Micro Bang for the Brave
Micro bangs and long hair is such a fun combo and an interesting style because of how long hair and short bangs play off each other. It changes how someone’s face is seen and creates a good type of visual tension. With a textured cut through that ends, it creates the movement so micro bangs don’t feel overly extreme. If the hair is a little wavy naturally, this type of layering is so great for air drying, but I will admit, micro bangs is one of those hair cuts where growing out is super annoying because they go through so many awkward stages before they finally blend in so only get them if you’re sure!

#23: A Warm Copper Bob with Bangs That Soften Everything
There’s a lot to love about this look, starting with the warm copper color. It flatters the skin tone and adds warmth to the overall look, taking down the starkness of the blunt bob. A cooler tone just wouldn’t do. This bob is polished and nicely structured with enough weight at the ends to swing beautifully. With fine hair, the blunt cut preserves all the thickness rather than sacrificing it to unnecessary layers at this length. The bangs are subtle and more face-framing than full fringe which makes them so easy to live with and grow out beautifully if you decide to!

#24: Dark Layered Cut with Wispy Bangs That Move
The different layers help achieve a certain goal. They help create movement to what would be a thick, straight hairstyle with no life to it. The soft bangs help to finish the hairstyle by softening the appearance of the face. For thick hair, bangs should be kept on the wispier side rather than letting them get too thick. This is because for thick hair, bangs that are too heavy tend to separate in the middle, resulting in more of a curtain look than a fringe. Shoulder length is practical and flattering, and the whole hairstyle is very nice and mature, without being boring.

#25: Textured Layers with Blunt Bangs and Warm Highlights
The soft highlights in this hairstyle give off a California vibe by adding a chill, casual, and effortless look to her hair. The highlights capture light and create an illusion of depth and dimension to her hair without looking overly highlighted. The subtle highlights also make the blunt bangs look softer and warmer, especially compared to if they were dyed a single color. The rest of her hair looks loose, natural, and relaxed as if it was braided and then slept on, and the just woke up with a large barrel wand. The bangs take the most maintenance as they are the only pieces that require any effort, the rest of the hair is super easy and grows out well.

#26: Long Textured Layers with Curtain Bangs and Natural Movement
I find that curtain bangs are the most in-demand style, and thankfully, it’s the one I enjoy the most too! When done right, curtain bangs can be incredibly versatile and customizable. They ease the transition as they grow out and ‘blend’ into the face-framing layers and longer hair. That’s the beauty of curtain bangs! The textured layers create a lived in look with soft waves and volume throughout the hair that looks especially good on medium to thick hair. You won’t even need to use a lot of product or heat style to get the look just right. If you have fine, straight hair, getting that look might be a little trickier. You’ll want to have some natural wave or texture to really develop the look!
