5 Questions You Should Always Ask Your Hair Stylist

Whether you’ve recently moved or are just moving on, going to a new hair stylist can be nerve-wracking. Make sure you don’t wind up with a haircut you hate by asking YOUR stylist all the right questions. Here are five questions celebrity hair stylist Sura Radcliffe of Byu-Ti Salon in Santa Monica (which is opening a new location in Brentwood later this month, FYI) recommends.

Question #1: What does an inch look like to you?

Your idea of an inch may look completely different than your stylist’s. To clear up any confusion before your appointment begins, have him or her measure out the length on your hair. If you don’t like what you see, let your stylist know so the proper adjustments can be made. Otherwise, you may walk out the door with much shorter or longer hair than you originally bargained for, says Sura.

Question #2: Is there anything you see about my haircut that you would do differently?

This question will help you understand if you and your stylist are speaking the same language, explains Sura. It can also be useful if you’re having trouble articulating what it is that you haven’t liked about your haircuts in the past.

Question #3: If so, why? If not, why?

Ask your hair stylist to elaborate on the previous question to get a better feel for whether or not he or she really “gets” your needs based on hair texture, lifestyle and budget, says Sura. It’s important to be on the same page, otherwise, mistakes can occur.

Question #4: What are some of my options for at-home conditioning treatments?

“Your stylist should have some remedies for dry, dull hair at home AND in the salon,” says Sura. If they only offer you treatments at the salon, then you know they’re being sort of sneaky (which isn’t a good sign, BTW).

Question #5:  How often will I need to come in to maintain this look?

“If your stylist says every 6 weeks, but you’re more of a 10 weeker, then it may not be the right cut for you,” notes Sura. Work with your stylist to find something similar that you love and that will also fit into your budget and lifestyle.
