The Short of It: 5 Updos for Cropped Hair

When it comes to hair tutorials, the Internet is practically swimming in how-to’s for long haired mavens. And while we all love a long and flowing head o’ hair, there’s something to be said for the sassy short haired ladies who rock a cropped ‘do with some serious BAM factor!

Today, we’re switching gears and paying attention to the shorties out there. See, we haven’t forgotten about you! Whether you’re contemplating updos for a late summer wedding, fall homecoming, a night with the gals — or just because — these updos for short hair should sate you.

1. Easy Poofy Bun for Short Hair

Christie of Ma Nouvelle Mode — who has just-above-the-shoulder length hair — provided this “easy poofy bun” hair tutorial for the Somewhat Simple blog. She calls it her “fail safe method for a full top knot for short or thin hair” and says you can either rock it sleek and chic or messy and carefree. There’s also a video tutorial on the blog in addition to the picture tutorial, so check it out.

2. Double Braided Updo

Hairstylist Theodore Leaf shows you how to recreate the most fabulous double braid hairstyle in this video tutorial. He says the updo was inspired by a look he saw on the red carpet. To recreate this hairstyle for short hair, create two French braids on either side of your part.

Next, you’ll twist and pin the rest of your hair at the nape of your neck. This gives the illusion of more length. Check out the short YouTube video for a more detailed walk through.

3. Short Hairstyle Twisted Updo

This twisted updo is so, so sweet. It’ll work well for those last days of summer and even transition nicely into autumn. Amanda of the Indie Jane Photography blog says day two or day three hair works best for this one.

You’ll start by creating some messy curls, then twist the front pieces to the back. Amanda added a headband before doing the twist, but you can create this look with or without the accessory.

4. Victory Roll and Waves

You certainly don’t need an electric pink head of hair to pull off this funky updo for short hair, but how can you not love the vibrancy of this mane? Anyway, the look was featured at Modcloth’s blog on Graphic Designer Bree and features a rockin’ victory roll, some waves and even a flower.

You can forego the flower if you want (or replace it with some gilded leaves for fall?). You’ll need a rat-tail teasing comb, hair clip, 1-inch curling iron, bobby pins and hairspray.

5. Romantic Updo for Short Hair

Looking for something soft and romantic? This hair tutorial for short hair by Kin Community is a great place to start. You’ll begin by curling your hair with a wand or curling iron. Once your curls are set, gather small pieces of hair and pin them in the back.

To really create that feminine vibe, curl some face framing pieces and set with a light hold hairspray.
