They say bigger isn’t always better, but when it comes to this hairstyle, we’re going to have to disagree. The more volume, the more texture, the more va-va-voom that you can muster up, the better this super romantic ponytail is going to look. It’s equal parts inspired by the runway and equal parts inspired from decades gone by. And the best part is that it’s super duper fun to recreate (everyone loves a little teasing action, no?) and takes 20 minutes tops.
What You’ll Need:
- Curling wand
- Two hair elastics
- Bobby pins
- Hairspray (optional)
- Hair serum/oil (optional)
The Airy, Romantic Ponytail:
Step One: Be a Tease
Start backcombing your hair at the top of your head and on the sides. This is going to create a little extra volume once you pull your hair into a half ponytail. Speaking of which, after you’ve sufficiently teased your hair, use your fingers to gently sweep slightly more than half of your hair back into a half pony. Smooth things out as you go, but don’t pull or press too much or you’ll lose too much of the volume you’ve created.
Step Two: Wrap it Up
Wrap a piece of hair from underneath your secured half pony around the elastic. This conceals the elastic and just looks better.
Step Three: Curl, Girl
Using the smallest barrel curling wand you own, start curling small sections of your hair. Continue until everything is curled. After you’ve curled, grab that comb and start teasing your hair again. Don’t worry — things will get a little crazy looking. The closer you feel to the ’80s, the better.
Step Four: Pony Up
Finally, after you’ve finished teasing, pull your hair into a low ponytail and secure with another clear elastic. Wrap a piece of hair around the elastic to conceal it like you did in step two. If you want, you can use a serum or oil to slightly smooth out the frizz you’ve created. Don’t go overboard, though, we want that super voluminous, soft and airy look. I’m using Davine’s OI OIL, which smells amazing. You can also use a touch of hairspray on top to secure any flyaways.
