Lavender Precision

Q&A with style creator, Cassie Blomquist
Hairstylist @ The Colour Bar Salon in Sacramento, CA

How would you describe this look?

This look is a current asymmetrical bob. The hair density is absolutely perfect for this cut.

The color combined perfectly to showcase a funky side of an otherwise professional haircut.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is for anyone who is not just a “wash and go” kind of person. It is important to set aside at least 10 minutes a day to take the time to style.

To maximize color preservation, I suggest washing hair no more than twice a week.

This style was done using Davines volumizing mouse and Davines texture spray.

No matter what, the hair will always need to be prepped using Davines Melu heat shield to protect the hair from heat (blow dryer/flat iron).

I would suggest this look for anyone wishing to add a little edge to their style.

I truly believe any face shape can have an asymmetric haircut as long as the cut is made to shape the client’s body and profile. This client has a particularly long neck which allows for her haircut to not appear as short as it would on someone with a shorter neck. All things to be considered by the stylist.

The key is to find a stylist that does custom haircuts to fit the frame and face. I encourage clients to always research their stylist and ask questions.

Marvelous Shine

Q&A with style creator, Kel Fin
Hairstylist @ The Upper Hand Salon in Houston, TX

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as rich and romantic. I honestly love the brilliance of the warmth in her hair that makes each wave in her hair pop.

Any advice for someone considering it?

To achieve this hairstyle I would recommend a 2-inch curling wand. I used KMS 2 in 1 Therma Shape on each section to give heat protection and a light memory hold.

This style is good for any hair type and the length should be shoulder length or longer. The end result was light, bouncing waves with lots of shine and reflection. Also, it’s very easy hairstyle to achieve even for low maintenance (aka me) people! It should only add 5-10 minutes to the daily routine!

Platinum Pink

Q&A with style creator, Chayla Goyette
Stylist @ Miya Salon & Spa in Denver, CO

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a beautiful peachy rose color. My favorite thing about this look is all the different dimension and depth that it created in her hair.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a lot of maintenance since pastels fade quickly. It’s important to understand that not everyone can achieve this color within their 1st or even 2nd visit. If they’re patient enough, then the final result will look great!

Always consult with a professional before booking an appointment and NEVER try this at home. My last piece of advice would be that if you follow the home guidelines I’ve given during the appointment based on hair type and needs, you can achieve longevity with this color.

Neutral Dimension

Neutral Dimension hairstyleInstagram @jalynbulls_hair

Q&A with style creator, Jalyn Bulls
Hairstylist @ Ulta Beauty in Northville, MI

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this as exactly what the client asked for. She wanted hair color that was neutral and dark but still had dimension without being blonde.

My favorite thing about it is that it’s so subtle, but is such a difference from a solid, one-toned brunette. My clients and I are loving this big beachy wave style and living in Michigan, it’s the closest thing we have to warm weather!

Any advice for someone considering it?

For anyone trying to achieve this color, ask your stylist for a very subtle brunette ombré. This is the perfect color for someone low maintenance that doesn’t do a lot of color or can’t always make it to the salon. If your hair is a lighter brown, ask for a drop root of a darker shade. If your hair is dark and you’re willing to lighten it, ask for your ends to be toned to only one to three shades lighter than your base.

If you are a colorist, I used Redken Cover Fusion (3/4 oz 4NN + 1/4 oz 5Ngb + 1oz 20 vol) on her new growth and put Redken Shades EQ (1 oz 7nb + 1/2 oz 6n + 1/2 oz 8v + 2 oz processing solution) on her pre-lightened ends.

For her haircut, I cut it to about collarbone-length, did a round layer, face-framed her hair, then lightly texturized with my texturizing shears for more volume. This particular client has very fine hair and a rounder face, so this cut and style is very flattering and makes her hair look very full.

Before blow drying, I used Redken One United and Redken Guts at her roots, then Bumble and bumble Hairdressers Invisible Oil on her mids to ends. Once dry, I used a 1 1/2-inch Babyliss Curling Iron and did as tight of curls as I could, sprayed them with Bumble and bumble Dryspun, then brushed through the curls with my fingers to get this fun wave. We finished the look with Dry Bar The Sheriff Medium Hold Hairspray.

Bombshell Dimension

Q&A with style creator, Kim Bondurant
Hairstylist @ Salon 221 in San Clemente, CA

How would you describe this look?

My favorite thing about this look is the dimension and different variations of tones.

Any advice for someone considering it?

My advice to someone wanting to achieve this look is to have a little patience. All hair is different, and if you already have color on your hair, it may take a few sessions to get it to the lightness that you want. I would say this is the middle stage before her next session to go even blonder.

I loved styling this client’s hair with beachy waves. First, I spray the hair with Davines Texture Spray for hold. I then curl the hair leaving about two inches of the ends out. After curling, I finish with Davines Strong Hold Hairspray and run my fingers through it. This gives the hair a more effortless and natural look. It is one of my favorites!

Natural & Effortless

Q&A with style creator, Yelena Chaulk
Stylist @ The Lab a Salon in San Diego, CA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as natural and effortless. The color was achieved by an open-air balayage technique and since the highlights don’t go straight to the scalp, it’s very low maintenance.

My favorite thing about this look is that it gives brightness around the face and on the ends without the upkeep of traditional highlights. It works great for someone that wants a natural, sunkissed look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Some advice I would give to a client considering this look is to try it!. It works great for someone who is low maintenance and wants to add some dimension to their hair. This is a good length for fine to medium hair. If your hair is very curly or thick, you can still rock this cut, I would leave it a few inches longer to make sure it doesn’t mushroom out around the shoulders.

This length will also easily go up in a pony for someone with an active lifestyle. You can’t see it in the picture, but there are really fine, face-framing highlights painted on for when she pulls it back.

The style was achieved with a 1 1/4′-inch curling iron, Bumble and bumble Repair lotion, and Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil. We finished with Oribe Dry Texturing Spray for volume.

Bright Caramel Waves

Bright Caramel Waves hairstyleInstagram @bouchyhair

Q&A with style creator, Lauren Boucher
Hairstylist @ The Lift Salon in Easthampton, MA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a bright caramel and I absolutely love the dimension of all the different tones within it. It is great for someone who would like to try balayage since it is so soft and sunkissed, but also has just enough pop to add that brightness we all love!

Any advice for someone considering it?

There are a couple things I always like to go over with clients who are considering a look like this. Product is KEY for sure! With this being more of a neutral caramel rather than a super coppery caramel, a toning shampoo is always a must (preferably more of a blue-based toning shampoo).

Styling also plays a big role since balayage can look SO different whether the hair is straight or wavy. I always like to let my clients know that although many of the pictures they bring in are wavy/curled and you can see a lot of dimension, when the hair is straight it will almost always have more of a solid effect.

Styled either way, however, this look is gorgeous and perfect for those looking to spice up their color without a ton of maintenance.

Faux Natural Blonde

Q&A with style creator, Krystina Beck
Hairstylist @ Strands Aveda Salon in San Diego, CA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as faux natural blonde. By using babylights between the balayaged sections, it creates a soft melting of color.

My favorite part is how you can achieve a high impact blonde while diffusing the colors to provide clients with longevity and lower maintenance.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is definitely for people who have busy schedules and can commit to appointments every four to eight weeks. As long as you maintain the client’s natural base color, their return time could be four to six months, depending on how fast their hair grows.

Home care is very important. Between color services I always recommend weekly or bi-weekly conditioning treatments, as well as using a heat protectant when styling. If you don’t use good shampoo and conditioner and wash your hair daily, you may have to come in sooner for a toner. I suggest clients wash their hair as little as possible and use dry shampoo to help keep their hair fresh and absorb excess oils.

Light Copper with Golden Blonde

Light Copper with Golden Blonde hairstyleInstagram @pilvip.hair

Q&A with style creator, Pilvi Pekkola
Hairdresser @ Salon Violet in Hameenlinna, Finland

How would you describe this look?

This is a light copper hair color with a few thin golden blonde highlights on medium length hair. Copper and gold tones are all blended together so the result is warm and bright at the same time.

My favorite thing about this hairstyle is how shiny and healthy it makes the hair look. Most customers want ashy and cold tones, but I am glad that hair trends offer warmer hair colors this season.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The most important thing to consider before coloring your hair copper is your skin tone. If you have warm tones in your natural hair or freckles, this color may be perfect for you. If your skin tone is reddish or pale, this color may not flatter you in the best possible way.

Copper hair also requires effort in your hair products. I recommend using a toning conditioner for every wash to prevent the color from fading. If you want to achieve a sleek and shiny finish, you need to use heat styling products before straightening in order to protect your hair and color.

Bold Yet Natural

Bold Yet Natural hairstyleInstagram @curl_iq

Q&A with style creator, Jenna Gillespie
Owner @ Luminosity Salon in Akron, OH

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as bold yet soft and natural. The painted highlights around the face are naturally placed, but make a huge impact in contrast with the darker base color and painted lows. Even though these are natural tones and placements, it definitely catches one’s eye.

My favorite thing about this look is that it catches the eye but is low maintenance! Natural looks are my favorite. They can be bold and high contrast, but as long as they are placed in naturally, it grows out softly.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If you are considering this look, see a stylist that uses one of the many bond builders that are available today. All of my colors receive Redken’s ph bonder to keep the hair healthy, shiny and manageable. Healthy hair is beautiful hair!

Colors like this are great for guests who want beautiful color but low maintenance. It grows out naturally when placed in softly. I love Balayage looks on all hair, but I think it looks its best on longer heads of hair that smooth out nicely with a curling iron. The hair shows off the depth of color so perfectly with a slight bend or wave.

This style was created using Redken Glow Dry Oil to blow dry, and Rusk Thermal Shine Spray to curl with a 1 1/4-inch curling iron.

High Contrast Shadow Root

High Contrast Shadow Root hairstyleInstagram @maggiecarroll_

Q&A with style creator, Maggie Carroll
Stylist & Make-up Artist @ Willow Salon in Mt Pleasant, SC

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look was actually born from correcting a previous color that had turned brassy at the root and was not really very maintainable once the client’s hair began to grow out. This is a high contrast shadow root with very ashy, platinum ends.

My client’s hair color is naturally as dark as the shadow that we did, so although it is high contrast, it will actually be a very soft growout and can be maintained as desired.

Her haircut was also a correction. We stuck with a medium length bob with some nice textured layers and soft perimeter to show off the color and help her hair to grow into a longer style.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

This look 100% requires the use of a toning shampoo. Because her ends are so light and her natural color is so dark, the blonde will naturally tend to yellow. The use of a purple or purple/blue shampoo will help to correct the hair’s yellowing and keep the ends looking fresh and bright.

I recommended that my client purchase Oribe Bright Blonde shampoo and conditioner and use it two to three times weekly. Also, because this was a color correction and we pushed her ends to this bright level of platinum blonde, we used Olaplex in her color formula and she purchased Olaplex No. 3 treatment to use on her mid-shafts to ends once a week as a deep conditioning treatment.

The health of the hair is the most important part of keeping a high contrast color looking its best.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This looks is honestly not accomplishable for everyone. My client has been blonding her hair for a long time, so we had a lot of pre-existing brightness to work with. Luckily her hair is very strong and durable and was able to handle the process.

Utilizing a shadowed root is a great way to get the best of both worlds very bright ends with a mix of the natural color through the root. For this reason, the color has a very soft growout, makinf it perfect for the client that can’t get into the salon every six weeks. As long as they are doing their homework and willing to invest in the necessary products to keep the hair on tone and healthy, the busy mom or business woman can get 10-12 weeks of growout from this look.

The concept of the color can be applied in many different tones and consistencies, so although this particular color is more edgy and funky, any woman would look amazing with their own customized version.

Lob with Soft Balayage

Q&A with style creator, Jekaterina Fedosejeva
Cosmetologist / Beautician / Stylist @ J.Joseph Salon in Land O’ Lakes, FL

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a mid-length lob with a sunkissed soft balayage and natural looking curls.

My favorite thing about it is that it is very low maintenance and easy to recreate at home.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To recreate this look, I recommend using Pureology Color Fanatic 21 Benefit, Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry, Redken Full Frame 07, Redken Iron Shape 11, Redken Diamond Oil, Redken Powder Grip 03 and Redken Fashion Works 12.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Mid-length hair has a sense of ease and flexibility, which is probably why so many women have it. This look works with any texture and density, as well as any face shape.

This is a very universal hairstyle that works for everyone from the stay-at-home-mom to the business woman who doesn’t have much time to spend on their hair every day.

Vintage Glam

Vintage Glam hairstyleInstagram @sarahzstylz

Q&A with style creator, Sarah Cabral
Stylist / Independent Booth Renter @ Mg Salon in Medway, MA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as vintage glam. Inspired by the 1920s finger wave era, I feel this look totally captures Hollywood glam and timeless sophistication.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

First I prepped the hair with Goldwell Magic Finish hairspray and Redken Move Ability 05 lightweight defining cream. I then did a curling iron set using the Bioionic Curl Expert 1-inch iron. This set resembles a roller set using hot rollers. Each section is clipped in with metal clips and then left in until cooled.

After cooling, I gently brushed out the curls to achieve this vintage wave. To finish off the look, I created a defined finger wave on the side and secured it with a diamond hair clip.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This style is great for any special occasion. You can dress it down by leaving out the hair piece or dress it up with your favorite hair bling. Anyone with medium to long hair can rock this style!
