3 Super Chic Short Hairstyles to Consider for Your Next Cut

Men may not always “get it,” but in our opinion, there’s something to be said about a woman who can pull off short hairstyles.

She’s typically sexy, edgy and most importantly, confident and comfortable in her own skin. C’mon, what’s not to love about that?

We asked two seasoned stylists to dish the deets on some shorter ‘dos that’ll make you want to chop off your hair like, right now!

#1 – An Asymmetrical Cut

If you’re feeling daring and desperate for a change, Avi Elkayam, creator of Runway Tools and stylist at Patrice Vinci Salon in Boston, MA, suggests going for an asymmetrical cut a la Miley Cyrus. Short on the sides and longer on top, this style even looks rad with just one shaved side, he notes. “It gives you tons of flexibility as well; you can wear it blown out on top, with tons of volume or swept over to the side or forward for a sleek, sophisticated look.” Try dying your locks a bold hue, like vibrant red or bleach blonde, to really make it pop.

Works best on: Women with strong features, such as high cheekbones, full lips or full eyebrows. If you think your hair might be too thin, ask your stylist to add a few extensions on top to help create fullness, he suggests. You can also buy a couple of clip-ins and play around with bright color sans the commitment of having to dye your own strands.

Maintenance: The key to keeping up this style is regular haircuts, at least every four weeks, says Avi.

#2 –  A Short, Textured Bob

After recently wrapping up the final season of “Gossip Girl,” Leighton Meester decided to ditch her long curls in exchange for a short, textured bob—so cute, and such a welcome change for someone whose had the same hairdo for years, says celebrity stylist Julia Papworth. Not to mention, this ‘do dries in no time flat and is super simple to style.

Works best on: According to Papworth, women with thin to medium hair texture.

Style It At Home: To add volume, apply Leonor Greyl’s Mousse Au Lotus Volumatrice to damp hair. “Blow dry with a round brush, then using a one-inch barrel curling iron, wrap random pieces around it to create natural waves,” advises Julia. Finish off with Oribe’s Apres Beach Spray, and you’re all done!

#3 –  A Chin Length Bob With Side Swept Bangs

When Portia De Rossi took the plunge and chopped off her signature long blonde locks back in June, we were all a bit shocked. However, says Julia, this beautiful bob with side swept bangs has really freshened up her look. And we couldn’t agree more!

Works best on: “Women with medium to thick hair, since this is such a blunt cut.”

Style It At Home: Run Oribe’s Smooth Style Serum through damp hair to help diminish frizz. Then roughly blow dry your hair, using your fingers to help build volume and create movement,” recommends Julia. “On your fringe, be sure to use a flat brush to blow dry so your bangs lay the way you want them to. Finally, run Oribe’s Fiber Groom Elastic Texture Paste through your stands to give it that piecey look.”
