| Split ends are something almost everyone deals with, especially people who have naturally dry hair and scalp. Split ends form when the hair cuticles wear down and the inside layers fray and split creating that feathered look you see. You can't really treat split ends, but you can cover them up temporarily with a good conditioning and the right serum. Once you wash your hair the split ends will show up again, so this isn't your best option. To really treat split ends is to create a prevention regimen that will help you avoid them from occurring. But first let's go over some things that causes split ends so you know what to avoid.
Things that can cause split ends
Don't vigorously brush your hair everyday. If you do comb your hair be sure to use a wide-tooth comb that has very soft tips. Be sure not to brush wet hair, just comb it.
Don't over condition and over wash. By doing this you're preventing your body from releasing natural oils that help keep moisture in your hair. Moisture is the key to preventing split ends!
Try to avoid using heat based products such as blow dryers, flat irons, perms, etc.. This will just dry out your hair and irritate the cuticles. Or just cut back on the use of these types of products. If possible use ionic based products.
Avoid sharp and elastic hair accessories that will cause your hair to tangle. Most often split ends occur from old or cheap hair accessories. Be sure to use smooth hair clips and wear covered elastic bands. Check your accessories once a month for any material damage.
Avoid alcohol based products.
Some steps you can take to promote healthy hair
Try using a leave-in conditioner just on the tips with a product like Hamadi Shea pomade.
To keep your hair healthy and to prevent split ends you should deep condition your hair once a month. A good method to doing this is to put the conditioner in your hair and place a plastic cap over your head with all your hair inside. Then place a hot damp towel on top of the plastic cap and leave on there for 10 minutes. Afterward, rinse hair with extremely cold water.
Look for hair products that have UV protection in their ingredients. Sun damage is another cause of split ends.
Most importantly get your hair trimmed regularly every 6 to 8 weeks. Even though you may be trying to grow your hair out it's extremely important to trip your hair. This is the only way you can get rid of split ends. I recommend hat you trim about ¼ inch and about 1 inch above your split ends.
Buy yourself a nice set of satin sheets and pillow cases. Satin will help prevent your hair from tangling while you sleep.
Lastly, a healthy diet is also a part of preventing split ends. Stay away from low-fat diets and be sure to drink a lot of water.
