This may be my favorite style for prom hair this season! The volume and the twist paired with a soft messiness is just all together fabulous!

Faux Hawk Hairstyle with Twist Back View Faux Hawk Hairstyle with Twist

    How to:

    1. Creating extreme volume starts with the products! A volumizing spray though the root area down the entire middle section is a must, as well as a volumizing mousse through the ends to also support this style.
    2. Create a Mohawk section down the center of head. Section by small section, begin backcombing hair from root to mid shaft.
    3. Smooth sides straight back, misting with hairspray while brushing back.
    4. Start the twist at the base of the neck. Loosely begin twisting and adding hair as you move up the head towards the forehead.
    5. Once you reach the front of the head, twist ends into the interior of the twist and secure with bobby pins.
    6. Going back to where you started, begin adding bobby pins (alternating with hair pins) to hold the twist in place.
    7. Finish hair with a good once over of hairspray and your favorite shine spray, too!

    Recommended Products:

For this extreme volume, I recommend using Kevin Murphy’s Anti-Gravity Spray. It’s weightless and has a great hold that will be needed to support this amazing style.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Oval, heart and diamond face shapes carry this all-off-your-face style well, and hair that is medium in length and texture will be needed to achieve this funky twist!

    Tip:

This is another style that you will want to practice before prom day. A great idea is to get together with a friend and practice your styles together. You may be able to help each other both look fabulous at prom!

  • Braided Simplicity

Sometimes the most simple of styles can really have the most impact. If you have a busy dress that needs a simple and elegant style, consider this braided ‘do!

    Long Braided Prom Hair Ideas

    How to:

    1. Begin with straight, sleek hair. You may need to flat iron it first. Remember to use a heat protecting spray and set your flat iron at the lowest setting for your hair type.
    2. Take a section from your fringe area and separate it into three. Begin braiding for three to four inches. Once you reach this spot, add a section from in front of your ear along your hairline to each outside section. Remember to keep these new sections smooth.
    3. Continue on with your three strand braid for another three to four inches, then add another section from each side into the braid.
    4. Continue this pattern until reaching the ends of your hair and secure with an elastic. This is a great spot to add a hair jewelry item or clip to add some sparkle to your braid.

    Recommended products:

To keep hair nice and smooth, I recommend using a smoothing cream before and after blow drying hair. Just a dot will make a huge difference in the shine and smoothness of your hair. My favorite is Pravana’s NEVO Model Behavior Smoothing Cream.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Any face shape can wear this long beautiful braid, and hair that is shoulder length or longer would be ideal for creating this look.

    Tip:

To dress this braid up a bit, you can create soft flowing waves as a base before braiding hair, or grab a tiny strand of pearls and incorporate it into the braid for even more interest.

  • Curly Collection

Beautiful curls paired with an imperfect braid create such a masterpiece of formal hair! This look will complement almost every dress and style this prom season.

Long Braid with Curls Long Braid with Curls Back View

    How to:

    1. Create beautiful bouncy curls by first applying a medium hold gel or mousse to damp hair. Blow dry completely with a round brush.
    2. Create three sections, each side and back. Begin curling hair using a curling wand at the base of neck. Make sure to let each curl cool completely before touching them.
    3. Once your entire head is curled, starting on one side, begin a French braid. This braid should not be super smooth and perfect. Letting the “bumps” and curls fall out a bit is what makes it so beautiful.
    4. Continue to braid through the length of your hair, securing ends with an elastic.
    5. Now the fun part! Go back over the braid and pull curls individually about a half inch out of the braid. Starting at the beginning, all the way to the ends. Mist braid with beach texturizing spray and scrunch hands over.
    6. Smooth fringe area into place and mist with hairspray. Secure with bobby pin if needed.

    Recommended Products:

Using the beach texturizer spray after you have created this braid will give more definition and separation to this look. My choice is the Kevin Murphy Hair Resort Spray.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Diamond, heart and oval face shapes wear this beautiful look well, and hair that is long and has a natural wave or curl to it aids in maintaining its shape all night!

    Tips:

This is a great style that can be taken to the next level by using hair extensions. Clip-in extensions that match your hair color can be placed in the hair prior to starting to braid and deconstruct the braid. Just make sure to check the color twice. You don’t want to notice later that it doesn’t match in pictures!

These prom hair ideas open up an abundance of beautiful braids, buns, straight and curly looks. No matter what your dress or personal style, with a little practice you can have the best prom hair this year that surely will be a hit on the dance floor!
